Hello HJ. Great to see the flock on your channel. I owe 3 Pelikans with the largest being the M605 Stresseman. Fantastic pen. Fits my smaller hand just fine. The video was brilliant and you just keep getting better with each release. Keep them coming my friend.
Thank you! I really appreciate your approach to making these videos. It's not just "clip here, cap there, flow x, nib y, value for money such and such"... no, you try to convey the FEELING of the pen. And this is what it is all about, right?
Thank you for your excellent explanation. While I have no experience with the M1000, the M800 has found its way to my home. And what a glorious pen it is! Ignoring its monetary value, it's one of the best daily carry pens. Easy to fill and maintain, always works, and never misbehaves. Funny thing, it LOOKS like just a straight stick, but in the hand it conforms just right into a perfect fit.
Outside of the pens, I loved the b roll shots. The pen in front of the train - two things many of us love! I also appreciate the plane and UFO blotter backdrop of the pens. The slow zoom-in/out shots were well done, too!
Thank you very much! I strive to keep things interesting. That backdrop was the original copies of the blueprints of the Starship Enterprise that came out in the 70s. I bought them when I was a boy. Thanks so much for the kind words!
Love this video HJ! Your videos are a work of art. I got my M800 from Atlas Stationers, and I've been carrying it everyday since. I love it because it feels like a paint brush in my hand, soooo smooth.
What a fantastic and thorough review of both pens. I get pens whose name are simply numbered mixed up in my head, and so all of your details are extremely helpful in creating a fuller idea of each individual pen. Thank you.
Thank you so much for another great video! I've been debating about which of these to get for quite some time and unfortunately, I'm still not sure:( But I appreciate you giving a run down of these two astheticly appealing pens. They just have a timeless beauty.
HJ great video,I have 2 Pelikans my first was the M200 in the Cafe Crème with a fine nib which I won at a pen club meeting with Tom from Goldspot Pens and my other one is the M800 in the Ocean Swirl with a medium nib which my wife gave to me for Christmas one year.I really enjoy them both.
@@HemingwayJones And I just purchased a Pelikan M400 in blue and black with a medium nib from Anderson Pens and when I talked with Lisa I found out they are going out of business at the end of the year, sorry to see such great people go.
I have recently completed having one Pelikan of each size. It has become one of my favorite brands. I got a double broad nib to put in my M1000 and I have an Italic Broad in my M800. Both are so broad and wet, they are fabulous to use.
Excellent video HJ, great work. I am looking for a nice Italian made fountain pen, what would you recommend? Something that won't break the bank, yet is a nice daily use pen.
Hi! This is the video I've been waiting for. I got what I needed from you, and just ordered m800 from Atlas. I'm really excited and looking forward to having this new pen. Thanks again. We need these comparison style videos. RG
Thanks for this, Tim. Don't have any Pelikans, but now I know that the M800 (M600?) might be the one for me. Actually, I'm looking for a Place de la Concorde. Might be awhile.
@@HemingwayJones , you are very welcome. My M1000s are the all black version and the traditional green stripe version. The black one has an EF nib and the green stripe one has a B nib. Both are the smoothest writers. I have only 1 pen that does not post, the Nahvalur Eclipse. I love the pen.
Good morning HJ! Really appreciated this video on the Pelikans! It was only about six months ago, that I had to make that decision on whether or not to buy the M1000 or the M800. I chose the M800 because I reasoned that the pen would fit my hand much better than the larger pen. Until I watched your video I was not aware how much bigger the M1000 is! I absolutely agree that the M800 is a better all around everyday use pen. And, as you pointed out, the M1000 is still out there if I ever decide to buy one! Meanwhile I will continue to give the M800 as much praise as I can. It is such a superb writer!
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the M1000 and M800. I have both models and enjoy using them both about every other day (depending on where I am at and which is closer at hand). I have the M800 with EF, F, M, and OM nibs, and the M1000 with EF, and F nibs. For the M1000 I have, the EF nib writes somewhere between an extra fine and a fine. The M1000 F writes more like a medium nib for my style of writing. The M800 EF is closer to an extra fine in my other brands, but if I apply just a little more pressure it will write like a fine. My fine nib is still a fine point, but tends to be almost a medium, depending on the pressure applied. For me it comes down to how much pressure I use when I write, and the angle I hold the pen. When using a fountain pen, I use a very light touch, and hold the pen at a flatter angle (maybe 30 to 45 degrees to the horizontal). I typically let the weight of the pen provide the downforce on the nib, with maybe a light amount of pressure from me-mainly to guide the pen. I enjoy both pens and it would be hard to choose between the two, but if I could only have one, I would go with the M800. If someone is interested in taking the plunge and acquiring either an M800 or M1000, my best advice is try writing with both, especially if you can try different nib widths (because there can be some variation between individual nibs with the same width), and go with the one that works best for you. Both are great pens!
Thank you for sharing your experience in this excellent and comprehensive comment. Thanks also for watching. These are amazing pens and it is very tough to choose between. Thanks!
I just bought the LE Blue and Creme m800. I really wanted the m1000 but went for a lower price point and the colours really impressed me. I write using whole arm movement so girthy pens with large nibs don't get in the way of range of motion. I'm super stoked for the m800 to arrive. Hoping it's as wet a nib as they're reputed to be.
Thanks for the great comparison, Dr. Jones. I came to the same conclusion about the size when I was choosing several years ago. Ended up with three M 800’s. Nibs are medium, broad, and broad-Italic. Had to order from Cult Pens in the UK to get the broad-Italic: wasn’t available from anyone here in the states. Good service, and even free ink! Got the medium nib on a special edition burnt orange body. Anything reminiscent of a MontBlanc Hemingway! Of course I could interchange the nibs should I desire. The other two are the green and the blue stripes. Technically one can see the ink level. Can sometimes do that with the green stripe, but can never quite see the ink in the blue one. Lovely writers, all. Will probably always wonder about the nib on the M 1000. Lovely spaces in the outro. Say more about the train and the dinosaur, if you please!
Broad Italic, awesome! You have a wonderful collection. Thanks for watching. So, the B Roll for this, at least the outside shots, were done on the way to the DC Pen Show. So I was in New Hope, PA for the Dino and Train footage. Thanks for noticing!
I have always liked Pelikan fountain pens. I remember sampling them at the D.C. Pen show and being especially captivated by the M800 with gray stripes. Somehow I managed to talk myself out of it. 🙂
I own many variations of the m800 with several spare nibs. These have been my daily writers going on 15 years. In my experience the m800 is the perfect fountain pen for comfort, capacity, quality, heritage and beauty. My personal grail pen is a first year one of 500 West German marked Toledo with a custom ground broad italic nib by Michael Masuyama. For comparison I also own many MB writers editions including a Hemingway still sealed in the factory box.
I would keep the M1000 in reserve for when the situation called for heavy artillery, e.g. signing a peace treaty after a long war or writing a cheque for ONE MILLION DOLLARS.
I love them both, I write with the m800 daily. The M1000 is a beautiful pen and I write with that one too almost daily. Unlike Montblanc, Pelikan does go on sale and you can get them cheaper at certain times a year. I just picked up a Black and Red M800 for a fantastic price and I haven't been able to put it down. Pelikan doesn't let down and is a solid pen and is a grail pen and it really deserves the name of a grail pen. It was mine for many years. I was never disappointed in mine. The price is scary, but it's well worth the investment.
I have two M1000s as well as the M800. If you’re looking for a reliable workhorse with a precise feel, the Pelikan M800 may be perfect for you. If you want a larger pen with a nib that adds some expressiveness and line variation, the Pelikan M1000 could be the right choice. Both pens are excellent investments and embody the quality Pelikan is known for, so either way, you’ll end up with a pen that’s made to last and provide a premium writing experience.
Both of these pens are gorgeous! I think the M800 is probably more suitable for me, and that's one that I'll keep my eyes out for. Thanks for doing this comparison video. It has helped me decide which pen I want to get in the future.
I have always liked the design of the Pelican M series pens. I do prefer the smaller models but the large ones do have a presence. Love the Enterprise D drawings in the background. Great video on the nuances of these fine writing instruments.
Thanks, I agree, those M series are iconic. Thanks for picking up on the Enterprise blueprints. I bought those when they first came out, when I was a boy in the 70s. Star Trek was my entire world.
As someone with larger hands, I still find the M800 more comfortable than the M100 and prefer the Montblanc 146 over the 149. I always recommend that people try these pens out firsthand before buying. Thankfully, living in Osaka, Japan, I have access to plenty of pen shops where I can test different models. If I hadn’t had this opportunity, I might have rushed into purchasing the M100 and regretted it later.
Thanks! I feel the same. The M800 is perfect in size, nib quality, and daily writing. The M1000 is also excellent. I think anyone who likes Pelikan should have an M1000 but should start with the M800 first. If someone is seriously interested in the M1000 go to a pen store or a pen show and try the different nib sizes.
I have both - the M815 Metal Striped in M and the M1000 Renaissance Brown in EF. My natural handwriting is quite small, so while I enjoyed the smooth and soft feel of the M800 Medium, the line is a bit broad for legibility. The M1000 in EF works for me as an everyday writer - and to be honest, I've become accustomed to the size of it. The bounce of the M1000 nib is very distinctive, and might not be to everyone's liking - even with a light touch it can feel like you're writing with a paintbrush. Personally, I love that feeling. - others might not. At some stage, I might swap the M815 nib to a Fine or Extra Fine, as it's a lovely pen that doesn't get enough use.
I ended up selecting the M600 after much internal debate. I decided the features I wanted most were the pen material, a gold nib, and that classic green stripe colour, in a price range I could afford (the expense is much more in Canadian dollars). The size also suits my smaller {female} hand. As much as I would love the pretty nib of either the 800 or 1000, the extra expense just didn’t make either work for me. They really are incredible to write with. Recently I pulled out my 200 (I have one in blue and one in brown marble - luscious!) and even those with their steel nibs feel great to write with! Great video! Tfs your review, comparison, and preference.
I have spoken a lot about it. This is my Houdini Pen; the one that likes to wiggle out of its cap and go rogue in my pocket! The Shirt Killer, Stainer of Fabrics! It writes like a dream, but I can’t trust the mischievous little bugger!
Through my own purchases and through kind gifts, I have four M800 pens. I have also tried the M1000 but agree that the 800 is a better size (for me anyway).
How delighted I am with the M800 - Red - B. Atlas Stationers was the source for me as the price was perfection of Fountain Pen Day. Having lived in FL during the winters, I so enjoyed watching the pelicans, their extraordinary bills. So this company and this pen has a bit more of a tie-in for me. Visually elegant, a piston fill, a perfect fit for my hand and a flow of ink that makes me hum with joy. I, too, do not post. Cogent comparison and recommedation.
The M800 is a great pen. But those pants win the day and are outstanding! I have a pair just like them. I got my from a pro shop just outside of Kentucky. Where did you get yours?
Great video. I Ordered an M805 but it is still en route. I love my vintage Pelikans even the basic student pens with steel nibs. I have small print so I imagine the M1000 would not do well for me. Not in my budget either. Take care.
Thank you! I am glad you noticed. What is cool is that these are the original set from the 1970s and that I bought them in a bookstore when they first came out. You may see them again soon in the B Roll!
Just to check fit I bought a clone M800. Feels good in hand. But, just ordered an M1000 at a super price. If/When there is a clone M1000 one could buy one of each to experience the topology of the pens for i der $100 for the pair. Then, after deciding which real Pelikan to buy, gift the clones or share then with friends who might be curious about Pelikans without risking your wxpensive fancy pen.
Personally, I hate clones. I am opposed to them on Philosophical reasons. There are iconic designs and other brands are stealing them. I would suggest people go to pen meet ups and try to see and try these pens or from a friend. I hate to see a brand profit from the hard work and legacy of another brand. But I do get it for practical reasons and I do own some myself, so I am not free from my own criticisms! So I definitely get it.
I have large hands too, but also think the M1000 is more of a special-occasion writer than a practical writer. The M800 is pushing it in terms of practicality. I also like the M800 nib better. I don't like spring to my gold nibs for regular writing - it feels like it creates more feedback. I like the spring nib for leisurely writing. I think the M400 and M600 simply don't compare to the M800 and M1000. Not because of size, but because of feel and how they write. The M800 is my favorite Pelikan along with the Pelikan M205 steel nib. I use my pens mainly for notes and daily work. They just feel better and I feel the Pelikan steel nib writes amazingly smooth - perhaps even more than my M800s.
I’m not sure about that. I don’t have an M400, so I cannot say, but my M600 is excellent. I admire its more refined elegance in its more compact design. I do love these pens.
@@HemingwayJones The M400 is nice, but a little too light for me, and the nib feels like it writes broader than my other Pelikans of the same size (same issue with the M600). I usually write with EF for Pelikan pens, so when they were coming out like mediums regardless of ink or decreasing inkflow, while my M800 and M1000 EFs were coming out the way I liked, I got turned off. I had 3 or 4 M600s over the years because I love the size but sold them all, including all the extra nib units I bought, and even one custom grinded. I still have my M400 that I use, but I learned to accept that it's going to write like a medium with feedback lol
I wouldn't say the M800 nib is bouncy or flexible at all. It is a bit of a nail compared to all the other Pelikan M fountain pens. But it is still a great nib and feed, writing first of every time and lovely to write with. Cheers
I own the M805 (with the "B"-ish Pelikan "M" nib) in the "Stresemann" look of grey stripes and the metal parts executed in palladium covered gold and I love it - just so still with the see-through stripes by the way. (and of course I love anything that's ante- and interbellum connected) While I have fairly small hands (I tend to wear "8" or "7.5" [unlined] gloves for proper fit) I love the size and dimensions of the 800 - I own a M200 and two M400s and I feel they are a tad bit small for the haptic feedback I get. I've been playing with the idea of getting a M1000 on and off for a couple of years since I love the extra large nib but I may also just stay with the "2nd size" as I do with my Montblanc Meisterstück 146 (though with a massive oblique "B" nib) - it's not a monetary thing - those are about as prohibitively expensive as the flagships especially with the "extra" features😅 - but the haptics just feel "right". Though if I stumble across a moderately inexpensive 149 or M1000 I just might be tempted... after all I *do* like the feel of my cheapo "149 sized" Jinhao fountain pens I use to write on materials at work (bespoke orthopaedic shoemaker and "orthopaedic inlay builder"). Thanks for the in-depth discussion! Best regards Raoul G. Kunz
Can I have both? And also an M600. Al three are nice. BTW: The internal piston components in the M1000 and M800 are the same. The M600 does not have metal internal piston components. So it's lighter, in addition to being smaller. The first "nice" pen I got at a real physical store, and I walked out with an M800 and a bottle of Parker Penman Sapphire. (Which dates the purchase.) I love the music in this video.
Very timely. I think I need to stay the course on economizing, yet a Pelikan is tempting. I see Anderson Pens has some in stock. Sadly, Anderson announced today they are closing their doors. There is a decades long slide in progress from literacy, curiosity, and intellectualism. The autodidact is retiring from relevance. Support for the casual academic is disappearing. You can't save the world but you can save yourself. Think, pick up a fountain pen, and do something generative AI can't genuinely do. Create.
don’t have either but suspect would prefer an M805 in EF nib in blue stripe, thanks:); know that German EF would never do it for me, would need these ground as Japanese EF’s:)
I was surprised to hear that you called affordable Chinese pens “Garbage”. On your Livestream on Tuesday. I was very disappointed in you for saying that. That sounds like you think that more than half of your audience is stupid for buying attractive, affordable, reliable, and durable pens for a fair price. I will continue to watch your channel because I enjoy most of your productions. I hope you reflect on how your audience might feel about this issue.
What I said, if you listen to the whole clip, is that Chinese pens that steal designs from other pens are garbage and fakes. I stand by that and it’s true. I didn’t say that all affordable pens from China are Garbage. And you are saying that I am calling people names, not me. I would never do that, so stop. I OWN these pens! Some excellent pens come from China, but any pen from anywhere, and not just China, that steals a design from another designer is wholly devoid of originality and character. It was not at all in the context you are casting it in and I don’t appreciate it. Thanks!

Picked up a M800 from Atlas for fountain pen day. It’s my grail pen and I love it.
You have chosen Wisely!
Both of these pens are gorgeous! I think the M800 is probably more suitable for me, and that's one that I'll keep my eyes out for. Thanks for doing this comparison video. It has helped me decide which pen I want to get in the future.
My pleasure! Thanks for watching.
I really like the special edition M800 in cream-blue.
You already threw an eye on that?
Gorgeous!
I think I am with you on that. The M800 is closer to the Goldilocks zone. Still, sometimes I really want the feel of the M1000. Thanks!
The video I was waiting for a long time
I was meaning to make this for a long time! Thanks!
I agree completely! Thanks!
Sadly, I don't think there is a Pelikan in my budget. If there were, it would be the 605 green/white/silver model. Great video!
That sounds pretty! Thanks for watching.
There is no bad Pelikan. You chose wisely! Plus, Classic color way!
@ exactly! Thanks!
What do you think of m200, the smaller ones?
I have spoken a lot about it. This is my Houdini Pen; the one that likes to wiggle out of its cap and go rogue in my pocket! The Shirt Killer, Stainer of Fabrics! It writes like a dream, but I can’t trust the mischievous little bugger!
@ got it, yes! Thank you!🙏
Through my own purchases and through kind gifts, I have four M800 pens. I have also tried the M1000 but agree that the 800 is a better size (for me anyway).
That is an excellent collection of pens! I agree with you completely. And then I pick up the M1000 and I’m not sure! 😂
@@HemingwayJonesliking both is also a good answer!😊
How delighted I am with the M800 - Red - B. Atlas Stationers was the source for me as the price was perfection of Fountain Pen Day. Having lived in FL during the winters, I so enjoyed watching the pelicans, their extraordinary bills. So this company and this pen has a bit more of a tie-in for me. Visually elegant, a piston fill, a perfect fit for my hand and a flow of ink that makes me hum with joy. I, too, do not post. Cogent comparison and recommedation.
Thank you very much! I love the tie in with your surroundings. Wonderful. Plus Atlas is a wonderful company. Thanks for watching.
The M800 is a great pen. But those pants win the day and are outstanding! I have a pair just like them. I got my from a pro shop just outside of Kentucky. Where did you get yours?
Haha! Thanks so much! They came from the Andover Shop here in Mass. Thanks very much!
Great video. I Ordered an M805 but it is still en route. I love my vintage Pelikans even the basic student pens with steel nibs. I have small print so I imagine the M1000 would not do well for me. Not in my budget either. Take care.
I understand. Great choices you have made. Thanks very much for watching!
Off topic, but like the Enterprise-1701-A background ❤ “Enterprise…no bloody A, B, C, or D….”
Thank you! I am glad you noticed. What is cool is that these are the original set from the 1970s and that I bought them in a bookstore when they first came out. You may see them again soon in the B Roll!
I have the M800 with an extra fine nib and I love it. May need to check out the M1000. The M800 is one of my favorite pens.
You have chosen… wisely! That is an excellent pen. The larger nib will give you a different feel. Thanks for watching!
Enterprise blueprint, 🖖🖖🖖🖖 logically appreciated.
Thank you! By the way, original! I bought it when it came out back in the mid 1970s. Thanks for noticing.
@@HemingwayJones I have the original The Star Trek Star Fleet Technical Manual, it's a fictional reference book by Franz Joseph Schnaubelt from 1975.
The M1000 has been a grail of mine since forever. Luckily for my wallet, I am now at the stage where I am getting rid of pens instead of buying more.
I like that posture. I try to get there and then I do something impulsive!
I love my M805 it is perhaps my best writer and a perfect pen.
Great pick!
I'll wait till Pelikan gets its senses back and restarts production of the translucent barrels!
That is a valid point.
I wouldn't say the M800 nib is bouncy or flexible at all. It is a bit of a nail compared to all the other Pelikan M fountain pens. But it is still a great nib and feed, writing first of every time and lovely to write with. Cheers
Mine is, very soft, not Pineider Quill soft or MB Heritage soft, but still… soft. Maybe they’re making them differently. Mine is
@@HemingwayJones lucky you! mine was bought in person from Akkerman in the Hague, about 8 years ago
I own the M805 (with the "B"-ish Pelikan "M" nib) in the "Stresemann" look of grey stripes and the metal parts executed in palladium covered gold and I love it - just so still with the see-through stripes by the way.
(and of course I love anything that's ante- and interbellum connected)
While I have fairly small hands (I tend to wear "8" or "7.5" [unlined] gloves for proper fit) I love the size and dimensions of the 800 - I own a M200 and two M400s and I feel they are a tad bit small for the haptic feedback I get.
Best regards
Raoul G.
Yes, and a case to put them in!
Create.
Wow, Anderson is going. That’s so sad. They were a small business. I hate to see that. Thanks for the great comment.
don’t have either but suspect would prefer an M805 in EF nib in blue stripe, thanks:); know that German EF would never do it for me, would need these ground as Japanese EF’s:)
An excellent choice’
I love my M800 and I like it much better than the M1000.
It’s an excellent pen!
There both great pens,I'd sent in my esterbrook rave piston fill to exchange the nib to exfine from fine.great video, frank in Oswego, ill

Constitution class refit. Late 70s design that still looks like it came out yesterday.

Hello. This one came from Atlas Stationers. I'm not sure they ship to your country. All the best!
Madras!
I love it! Often in patches.
I NEVER post any of my pens, I do the same as you, in my hand, pocket, or on the desk.
Did you ever? I used to. I don’t do it now. Thanks!
@@HemingwayJones No, typically I have never posted my pens.
@ I have reformed.
Thanks!
@@HemingwayJones 👍
Is a Sailor 1911 a fake? Is a Platinum 3776 a fake. These are Japanese copies of Montblanc. Are they garbage too?
I never said you called anyone names. You implied it.
The Prisoner!!!
Love that show!
Hi. Great show, hoped you liked Italy. I had a M800 and didn't like the nib, the M1000 could be goer but I need to ask my 149.🤗🦘
