    Need more details on the debates themselves -- some hold the opinion that these are the finest debates yet held in the English language. Especially, you should mention the "Freeport doctrine" which helped make Douglas unacceptable to the South, and so split the Democratic party during the election of 1860.

    The democrats were not "split" on the question of slavery. They were firmly in favor of slavery as a state's rights issue.

    Questions of “racial equality” were not central to national or local politics in 1858. Most white citizens at that time would have found such an idea preposterous. This is one of the problems which arise when we project modern sensibilities to history.🤔

      No, you're not correct. Most of the Western world had already abolished slavery & almost every thinking moral person knew that slavery was immoral long before the let 19th century.
