sudo pacman -Syu For updating your system in Konsol
sudo journalctl -b | paste-cachyos It makes an error repport for the devs to look into if you have a problem give em the link that is generated in discord support or on the Cachyos forum.
Not liking Windows or Linux so far but I might look into Ubuntu Cinnamon, Kubuntu, or Linux Mint which has more emulator support they still don't support what I want I don't hate Linux it still needs worked on it's too early to switch to Linux I've been a Windows kid all my life I am pausing at Windows 10. I even accidentally installed Arch Linux correctly and got hooked on it but it kept breaking so I am using distros instead eadh time I switch the login theme then reboot my screen goes back and I don't know how to get back to the screen it shows _ and a mouse cursor as well a black screen gonna have to look into that until I mess with Arch Linux a bit more.
@@futuristicentity2417 Well, Arch linux is like that. Cachyos as a fork of Arch is not like that. Its tested before its going out to the people. Not seen it broken since i started to use it in september last year. Every now and then, we can see small regressions. But usually patched the same day or so, like it works without issues. Im dual booting, not that I need windows anymore it seems. But just because i like to have it under special cases. Now i use it more or less like my main system for gaming.
I love Cachy OS its the best Wayland experience I've ever had thanks to them figuring out all the nvidia beta driver stuff.
one of the devs wanna close the open source stuff so i'd change fast :d
@@cfoe44 what?
@@cfoe44 i cant find any info about that
Just finished installing CachyOS, Thanks for the detailed guide!
Thanks very much for this great how-to. Successfully dual-booting (and playing Steam games on CachyOS) having followed steps. I've run many distros off and on over the last 20 years but the recent purchase of a Steam Deck made me realise that gaming on Linux has really come on while I wasn't paying attention. This is my go to OS now, no question.
CachyOs, is arch on steroids. So its perfect for gaming. We also have a version of it for steamdeck :) Where it enhances the product performance wise even further then what Valve can do. It`s the same as you had SteamOs, but its our kernel. There is also some scedual stuff that you can do, where its just mind blowing fast. Problem is, everytime i try to talk about the scheduler, youtube removes my comment. But if you want to know more, just hit me upi on the cachyos official discord, under the name Lord Vexy
Thanks. Once I know my way around a bit I'll do that👍
Great guide thank you NightOwl. Iam just about to install CachyOS just for games. Thank you for the clear explanation of how to set it up.
44:00 When confirming the action, instead of typing Y, you can simply press Enter.
Great tutorial! May have to try Linux myself 😃
I might be the only one but id like a more technical video about the file systems.
The filesystem in it self is not to much to worry about. If you think about performance, i would say ext4 is the fastest overall right now. Many can say like zfs is faster. Look at the benchmark. Problem is, that its not meant for that types of files that you use every day. We are talking raw server data files that is TB big in size, that is made for samsung. Now we are talking server files. Many forget to explain this. BTRFS for backup options with the shapshots. Then again, it would not be as fast as a system that is snapshotting your drive all the time. But its a great feature. Performance vice, its doing verry well, so you can hardly notice the difference between em. I started to benchmark em all. Looking at data and copy of files and reading on 990pro m.2 disks. Mostly for my system the ext4 was better. Then you could see bigger sized movie files etc, excell on moving etc on some systems. But performance in reading smaller files like in games was worse. Then i got more load time then the faster benchmark system. So it depends on size tbh. Then we have a new filesystem, that i have not tested yet. But it seems to have some newer featur support for connection like usb-c etc or new amd platform. Problem is, it is not detected in linux with the boot manager im using. So i have not looked into. But all in all. most safe system to use for everyday use is still ext4. How ever. Older benchmarks a year ago. was not the same as today. so be caution of what you see and belive. The filesystems is changing a lot now days. There is also this man, that makes video about this, called Dj ware, if you want to know more indepth. He benchmark also twice a year.
@@glenni83 thanks for all that info! Yeah I'll look up DJ ware. I think I also just need to read up on them because this is pretty interesting to me.
@@blakeyhatcher It was to me also, until I started to understand the filesystem of linux. Then it was not much to look at. Even ive been intrested in the past. Like, the intressting part is everything that is written about filesystem a year ago is not even close to valid data. It have all turned upiside down. The we had the people going for filesystems that ruined there diskes. They died under 10 months after running the fastest filesystems. Why? well, if you dont have a break on system. It will burn up and die. So wise man said in the end...
EXT4 for journaling (faster crash recovery) and single user experience. BTRFS in conjunction with snapper (in the tweaks section) for snapshot-backups. XFS without journaling...
Everytime I manage the files and sizes then click install it always has a error, I’ve been trying for hours
Thanks a lot !
Put as second system on steam deck, all perfect )
I have some questions, the Desktop Edition is just for laptop and desktop right? does this edition has all the tools for gaming?
and the Handheld Edition, Is it just for items like Legion Go , ROG or Steam Deck? because I tried to install the Gaming Edition in my laptop , and It have been impossible so far, I tried with ventoy boot and with Rufus and none of them worked.
Thanks a great video
I suggest to make zoom in principally when you explain the different partitions, because it's really difficult to read the options you're choosing.
Sorry, i did not get an notification on your question. So cachyos, is not an gaming distro. But its the best gaming distro. It has a button called gaming package. Install it, and it has everything that a gaming distro has and more.
Handheld edition, is for Ally, allyx, steam deck etc.
Yeah, I will zoom in the next time. I did not think about others screens. Due im sitting on 42" screen, Where it verry readable. So thanks for the feedback on that. I totaly forgot.
I have a problem and when I want to start cachyos, it always starts in emergency mode. I don't know why, the installation works fine, then restart, the loader comes up normally and then I want cachy to start but the same error keeps coming up
Come to the discord. Then we can help you there
if i dual booted how can i load a game from windows for example ? without copying it to linux ? is it possible ?
tbh, you dont want to do that. We have something that can read the files. But when you edit or use windows files in linux. There is a big chance that the file or hard drive can be corrupted after. If that happen, the hard drive will be gone. But you can fix it in windows again with scan disk for errors. You can copy files from windows to linux. That is not a problem usually. Its just when a program or file gets edited, like patching of games etc.
@@glenni83 I bought a new nvme ssd 1tb I coppied all if my games and reinstalled linux alone in this driver
I have a 1060ti graphic card, should I choose default version or the nvida version during the installation process?(I donot understand what 900+ cards are)
900+
i read that ai can be used to remove those overlay, you might want to cut out the part where it show your qr code.
Im not that technical of me. I just put a picture over.
Thanks for the perfect guide. and what if we want to remove limux revert back to windows only then what steps do we need to follow?
There is a few things that you can do. First of all, is what we did in the start of the video, where whe shrink. Where we delete it to raw again and expand it again. Then change the boot in bios with windows again, and not refind :)
Sorry for late reply. Im working night shifts. So I have not had time to sit on the computer past days.
@@glenni83 thanks its fine.
cachyos? never heard of it before :o
i love when chkdsk nukes my ntfs drive
Haha, you using ext4 with ntfs? :D
@@glenni83 i tried to dual-boot windows with nobara,
My fatal mistake was shrunking ntfs partition inside linux, not in windows. After finishing with Nobara i tried to boot in windows, bootloader said i can't mount it so no windows for you today
Funnily linux was able to mount ntfs and access files, i said okay
Then i booted winpe, ran chkdsk, it said ur drive is bad blah-blah-blah and nuked $MFT
Then i couldn't more access it
i get "no space left on device" error(
I dont do support in chat here. If you need help, either use Discord or forums of CachyOs :) You get pretty much help for anything over there. Where there is a pretty big community :)
Sir which is better cachy os or endeavour os
There is no Arch linux system that can beat Cachyos still in performance and gaming right now. Only wonky thing right now, is some games when it comes to proton. But that is a problem that is on any Linux system right now
@@glenni83 thanks for your reply
And Now im confused with linux mint vs cachy os
@@leojohns499 If you are new to linux, linux mint is retard proof. Excuse my language there. As i said, there is no linux system that outperform cachyos. Even the the other major distros, uses the cachyos kernel to make it good.
Im some minutes in the video. Does this method include secure boot support?
Well I have shown, where to go. Then how it should look. I was out playing Disc Golf yesterday, so did not see it before now. Did you figure it out?
@@glenni83 yep! I managed to sign my kernel and refind entries with sbctl :D
Which is better cachyos or nobara?
In an honest answear. I can tell that CachyOs is much better atm. It has HW support that most other distros dont have. Then you get packages, that is auto detected by Cachyos. Then you would get a v3, v4 packages etc. Meaning you get the full featurs of your hardware. Like me now, I have an AM5 setup, then it will get the v4. That is a zen4 pacakage, and you get your Avx512 etc.
Performance wise, no one can beat cachy atm due its patched if the is so much as 1.0% performance boost. Then EVERYTHING has it. So in the end the gain is major on Cachy.
I spoke to GE who has Nobara the other day. I started to ask questions, why dont you have this and that. He did not even know what it was. I have had my time in Nobara as well, but i faced many many issues, then the system broke on updates, so im not touching it again. Now, I wanted to look into it again but when the first the site says "we had a rocky month blabla". That is not a good sign. I wonder from time to time, if GE is that good with linux. Under an interview, it seems like he put all the problems to the devs to fix, so he could update later for the proton.
But I have seen what the Cachy devs can do. They know what they are doing for sure. Peter is pretty much like an AI when it comes to Linux. You ask the question, then you get an answear, do this and that. Fixed.
Then I know from benchmarks as well, that I dont even need to think about Nobara. Due things has around 10-30% performance gain on cachyos.
Close to every distro uses cachyos packages now, due to they are so good.
Is a pure gaming os like nobara better then cachy? No. Not at all. Its tagged a gaming distro, because it comes pre installed. Then cachyos, is not. But you press one button on the Cachy Hello, then you have everything like it was on Nobara. You dont have to think about anything after that. You get steam and all packages that you need.
I think I would have used Garuda over Nobara even.
Cachyos is fixed for you. They compile everything that you need, so you get the max performance for the system you have. I love it. Its install, and forget, then start playing
@@glenni83Your answer was great and detailed. Thank you . I will switch to cachyos.
@@KiroKiro-ko3kb welcome to the team :)
Cachyos or garuda os?
I think cachyos cause of their better optimized kernel
Garuda uses zen
CachyOs
Thank you, I'm using it now and I'm loving it
Linux lacks support on specific hardware yeah of course you can install Steam now but emulation on Linux is horrible when more emulators release to Linux like Project64 without wine I would gladly switch I am so far liking Garuda Linux, Mint Cinnamon, and Ubuntu Cinnamon maybe NetrunnerOS and Kubuntu because of how friendly they are. I still need certain software which is why I am on Windows 10 until it stops working at least it looks like End of Life will be different hopefully the finalized version receives maximum security updates that will make it unhackable this isn't old Windows I think Windows 10 is making major improvements before the finale of Windows 10. I am still not upgrading though if Steam stays with Windows 10 for a while I might stay but lately I've been wanting to g back to older consoles from being younger right now I have no need for Linux nothing actually works as they say it does. I tried Arch Linux quite a few times it kept breaking on me I haven't tried Slackware which I want to I could give it a shot Windows I noticed is slowly dying as it gets worse updates keep failing Windows 11 is breaking badly and they're STILL forcing Recall down people's throat.
This time you can opt out on Recall which I think many people will opt out it's failing pretty bad over on Windows 11 I might think about Deepin 20 instead of Windows 11 I heard it was stable and the community has changed and fixed their flaws on spying on people what happens when we have no choice but to use Linux though are other people willing to cooperate? Goodluck on the switch guys I wish you luck I will just die on Windows 10 because I am not being fear mongered into leaving this time I made the mistake with Windows 7. I got a flash drive in case something goes wrong so I won't need customer support anyway. I see a bad fate for Windows in the near future if they don't stop forcing TPM 2.0 just about everyone might switch to Linux I am keeping an eye on Ubuntu Cinnamon for improvements to catch up to Linux Mint Cinnamon I am still not convinced it doesn't support AMD Software at all and I can still use it after End of Life I can enhance video Linux can't do that there's both positives and negatives when using Linux don't hate me it's just not for me I want to enjoy Steam games but it looks like I am going back to console gaming after this I got my ps3 upgraded and it has all the games I want to have on it I tried "triple" A gaming and it doesn't work out all they want to do is improve graphics not gameplay newer games are badly nerfed compared to older games being a kid I am about to not even care about switching when Linux gain more software support I will think about switching I need some thoughts though in what I can do to make up for emulation Windows 10 will still be useful beyond End of Life.
I might go back to Linux Mint who knows but to me Windows 10 is good enough if you can future proof your PC experience maybe I will start pirating games like everyone else.
Im not sure where to start answearing here, as an licenced Apple and Microsoft engineer. for about 20 years 90% of what you are saying here is what i call tinfoil hat talk. Emulators in linux is superior. How i know? I own one of the biggest retro archive out there. Why im on Linux in the first place. Windows 11 is not slowly breaking, that is tinfoil hat talk. Recall is pushed back, so that is not a thing anymore. TPM is pretty good to have, for your own security, and you can turn it off, or pass through it. Wiindows 10 had its last update september 2022 22h2 and are not supported anymore. So no major improvements there. Steam games going back to console gaming? what? Amd hardware is not great on linux right now tbh. Nvidia side have it better today. If you are new to linux, then you should stay on Mint. Pretty safe over there.
@@glenni83 No need to get trigger happy over simple criticism if you got nothing positive to say don't say it at all snowflake.
1 entire hour!! And you said 'lets start the process' after 8 Minutes?
Yes, when you have new people that has not touched Linux. You have to do it, so they understand what they are doing. Process for me alone, could have been done in less then 10 min. But i also try to educate new people. This video is a torturial for the Cachyos forums. So it needs som extra stuff sadly. I could have pressed trough it, but then people dont know what they have done.
