New Project + Interior Restoration!

- In this video we take a closer look at the new Galant and cover in detail all the tricks I used to restore the old, dry leather involved on both Galants. Yes. Both. I have two of them. Please watch the Shootout video because it's not anything like my last 3.
A car is only as good as the driver's experience with it, so it's very important to me that this detail meets my standards. The build plan for both cars comes together right here, and I share with you my results and what direction each build will go. This video is extremely condensed. There's over 100 hours of work here, more than 30 in sewing, alone... and I've done my best to condense and explain it all so that it can be useful to anyone who encounters the same problems in their own restorations.

My condolences Jafro. Excellent work, John would indeed be proud.
Thanks man! All of this means a lot!
John’s passing is so hard to hear….he’s smiling down seeing you’re taking 148 to the absolute next level. Can’t wait to see how she comes out. No doubt she’s gonna get the Jafro treatment.
❤
John's passing is so tragic, my heart goes out to his family and yourself Jafro. This project meant a lot to both of you and it's truly a shame that he won't be able to see it finished.
I want to say that I'm so thankful to him for giving us all the opportunity to learn from this car, and I'm grateful that you're making sure that it's done right, it could not be in better hands.
Thank you as well for dedicating this video to him, you're an incredible person Jafro, your videos and the dedication you've put into them has helped countless of us and even changed some of our lives for the better.
Hearing the litany of emotions in your voice at the end there... just moving man. Don't know how else to say it. Everyone please go to the link and help.
been watching you for over 10 years now, stripping an eagle talon was my first video of yours. This one hit me really hard. your a good man putting so much effort into a friends project like this. John is smiling without a doubt watching you work. You do us all proud.
John knew you were the only man who could bring the car back to what she could be, My deepest condolences to Johns's family.
I give it 1 year before the red seatbelt buttons fade again. 😂 but seriously this is a ton of amazing work and showing your technique is awesome. Really love your channel Jafro! Excited to see these two cars come together.
ABSOLUTELY LOVE your videos. This one is great. Love the attention and voice over. Thank you
I'm sorry for your loss! JC148 will be the coolest of the 2000
Thanks 4 the motivation.
Wrecked the 97 2dr mirage.
New 88 mighty max daily
For 2024😂
Your videos are coming more frequently, and we appreciate it. Amazing work as usual!
I always look forward to new videos ... I am shocked you don't have more subscribers for the number of years you have been on RUclips... this is a gem of a channel and a wealth of information ... and damm i can only imagine how much time you have in editing all these videos
Yay!!! Works done and Jafro is on
I'm binge watching Jafro tonight, what fun (yes, RUclips failed to notify me again!) Looks like 148 lived a previous life in a Walmart car park fitted tightly between a Ute and and SUV and someone commuted between the two accross the top of 148? So many dings I lost count.
I never thought I would be watching Jafro videos for tips on how to do leather upholstry repairs, and you did an awesome job even beside the fact that you did it for the first time. I could sene your passion for getting it right in every stitch!
Sorry to hear about John passing, he would have been proud of the efforts you have made and the new found skills that you are bringing to these restorations. Well done, Jafro, and thanks.
A gallant. My boss had one in the 90's.. Didn't inspire me 2 be like him...Thank God..! Saw him years later in the last gen version.. Must be good then!
Being One with the leather certainly make you at one with ...Leather....Kinky!
I'm going thru all this with my 84 Fiero at least my floors are rust free. I got to the sound proofing laid down but unfortunately my carpet is to far sun faded to be saved. The after market carpet is not the old style loop stuff and does not have the salt and pepper style so I'm going to have to comprising and get a solid color. I all so have the 2 tone dark/light grey plastic. All the light grey abs plastic oxidized, I'm going to try this stuff called Retro bright on the pieces. SO replacing the carpet means the lower door cards wont match so I found some one to make vinyl replacement. There are replacement seat skins out there but I also have to dive in there and replace the headrest speakers. Its going to be tons of hours of my labor and still at least 2k to get every thing replaced and installed. I'm glad you did this video showing its possible, I hope it encourages more people to try repair and restoration of there interiors.
...you just blew my mind with the heat gun trick on the seat belt buttons
Jaffa you wil love the VR4... I know as I do & there are 3 in my family. That's Chassis is perfect! Looking forward to watching your build. Also when cleaning your carpet, hang it on a cloths line... easiest way to clean it with pressure washer. Cheers Derek Down under
I just bought a set of Recaro's for my Saturn Ion Redline. The previous owner of my car decided to sell the original Recaro's, and replace them with trash base model seats, before he sold it to the dealership. Anyway the drivers seat leather bolsters, and bottom all have blown out stitching and now I know where to start in those repairs. I'm going to re-enforce the seams also, I'm a bit larger than the intended demographic of this "sport compact Saturn". As always, I learn something I would have struggled with watching your videos. I will start on that seat over winter break from work.
"It's long, it's hard, and it hurts."
-- Jafro, talking about upholstery.
Sorry to hear about John’s passing. I know you’ll make him proud with this build. Already started off in a great direction and just watching this video I’ve added a couple to do’s on my galant. Seats turned out amazing, just when I think I’ve seen Jafro do it all you hit us with a curve ball and turn into an upholsterer.
I know! It's weird init!? This job lived inside my brain and on my shelves for ages and it's good to finally have all of it sorted x2 before the parts collection grew any larger. I cleared up a whole lot of space and now I look forward to passing on all the stuff I cleaned up that I didn't use. I even found a good home for my Evo seat! But now I get to return to the mechanical world for all of December! Beginning with 2 days of cleaning up bolts on a bench grinder of course. I love my hands, but they absolutely hate me.
A trick to revive seat foam is to use a steamer.
Its a great idea to line the bottom that touches the metal seat frame with some sort of thick fabric like denim material.
And to have a absolutely new feeling seat cushion add a 1/8" layer of foam right over the whole thing.
Have a car that has had that same windshield crack that was repaired by a shop... Vac glue method was used... Still has the same windshield 10 years later and the repair is seamless, invisible... The crack was caused by a rock that dropped off an idling truck next to my father who was driving it at the time...
I gotta say that i love your stuff man... Been watching you for a long time...
All the best and kindest regards,
Steuss
Best. RUclipsr. Ever. Still. ❤❤❤
Great video as always. I wish your videos were endless, a 1 hour video feels like 5 minutes real time. Cant wait to see the progress in the next episode
90's leather is such a bonus. These days, a lot of interior leather is sealed - ostensibly to protect against stains, but it also means that leather conditioner just can't get in. I'm told you can break the sealant a bit with scotchbrite pads, but I've not had the guts to give that a try just yet. That said, the sealed leather doesn't seem to attract the mould either, so I guess it comes out even in the (power) wash.
I don't know how Toyota/Lexus leather even qualifies as leather? It's so delicate! That coating damages so easily with heat that you're better off just cleaning and refinishing it. That's why I left the warning. Like you said, the hide on this car is thick! But it does create more maintenance.
I am very sorry to hear such bad news about John.😞 My condolences to his family, friends and the community.
So sorry to hear about John. I am right there with you in finishing someone elses car. My father suddenly passed last year and he was so close to finishing his 1984 Porsche 944 resto he was working on. Its probably the most amazing minute detail resto ive ever seen, and i hope i can also make him proud and carry on the exact dream he had.
Fender come off and door skins can be fixed
Windshield can be repaired, but I'm not sure if that moon eye can be fixed, though looks like it's sealed on both sides.
Mold you had to deal with that before & with good results.
Good progress & happy holidays.
A lot of time has passed since the ozone treatment, and if I could do it all over again, I wouldn't. It accelerates the oxidation of everything including the plastic. Of course almost nothing plastic or leather was good to begin with, it had all already faded... but the seat I treated that you're referring to was this passenger-side replacement that I restored in this video. It got a lot softer than the driver's side over the years that followed. For years I was testing the results of different methods, and this was what I came up with. 1229's interior did clean up, but it actually rolled downhill faster after the ozone treatment. Hard foam got even harder, leather shrunk more, more fading. All the door lock pulls I had left broke off. I can't blame it for all of that but it certainly didn't help.
I didn't wake up today expecting to get emotional, but here it is. I'm sorry to hear about this loss.
It's okay my bro. John's last gift to me was a gift to all of you. It means even more to me now to complete his wish.
God I wish I could have a GVR4. My daughter is getting old enough to really like riding in cars, especially boosted ones and DSMs are my passion. One day maybe I can get one we can build together. Until then, I'll live vicariously through you!
All you need to be is younger than me, and you have two more chances! :P
Thank you John! May you build your dream car in the coolest garage that all of us back here can only dream of!! The most sentimental i've ever been about a seat stitching video ever... period. Good job Jafro!
My condolences to you Jafro and John's family. Thank you for the video.
Next level efficiency 😎👍
Sewing a cool patch over the hole in that seat bolster would be very punk rock
Sorry for your loss, Jafro!
On another note, those push-lock fasteners, both pushed and screw type are used on Kubota tractors aswell(japanese). I work a s a Kubota technician, and I deal with those all the time. So, you can pretty much say, that this mitsu is a small percentage tracotr.
Keep up the good work!
learned more useful stuff in this video than any other
My condolences Jafro
Talking about biohazard.. Discard and replace any jute carpet underlayment. Soaking the seats then topically wiping the leather and calling it good...still masking a biohazard. Undoing hog clips and taking leather/upholstery cover off the foam only takes needlenose pliers and the will, inspect and treat the problem ever present underneath and from the backside. Headliner too!
All correct! The jute's gone, but I'm saving it to use as templates for the replacement. That's actually the *only* thing inside the car that the mice were after or affected. The interior fabric I was referring to sending to the extractor is just the rear deck lid cover (if I don't clean that one myself), carpet, trunk liners, and the headliner. Rreplacing any of the seat padding or fabric requires completely de-stitching and re-stitching the entire seat, and that goes beyond where I'm willing to go because they really aren't all that bad... but the rusty seat frames might just still be bothering me enough to go back in there again. Why doesn't the factory paint ANY of that steel? It's not just Mitsubishi, nobody does it.
So sorry for your loss Jafro. John will appreciate every moment you put into this car.
We all get to enjoy this! As was his intent. This was his way of giving it to all of us.
Your upholstery work is astounding. Thank you,
@jafromobile it might be a good idea to take one of those seatbelt buttons and send it to be 3D scanned that way the community can turn the scan into an STL file to make some 3D printed versions from red ABS or ASA. ASA in particular is very UV resistant, and both will put up with the high interior temperatures in the summer.
I think you can do that with your cell phone now? I have a 3D scanner at work, it's a PITA to use, slow, and requires post processing... but students are coming in with stuff they scanned with their phone. Remember some phones have LIDAR. Not mine. Just some.
@@Jafromobile Any Pro iPhone after the 12th one and any iPad Pro after 2020 has a LiDAR sensor, they aren't very accurate for smaller parts like the seatbelt button though.
A Jafro video to start December?! Fuck yeah!
These videos are great. I Love old Mitsubishi content
Love the Clutch shirt brother! Got a glimpse of it during the seatbelt button section. Had to rewind, pause and Google to make sure it really is for the band I much love and not some fancy design for the transmission component instead. Nice to see you grabbing some merch, they certainly deserve the support. Rock on!
I have 17 of them now along with physical copies of everything Neil has recorded. Gaster is a national treasure. The whole outfit. None of them are virtuosos; the rough edges make that band exactly what it's supposed to be, and it's perfect. Same goes for Lionize which is also on Weathermaker Records. And yes, I will unapologetically rock on!
fantastic video as always Jafro and im extremely sorry to here about your friend John. ❤️
"Double top stitch" is called a french seam and is secured by both the first sticth and the under felt which is far easier done on a double needle walking foot machine, not two top stitches, it's also used to secure a raw edge on the fabric. A safer way instead of a heat gun on the leather, is to use a steamer after setting parts in the sun to soften slightly.
Love the leather in the US spec VR4, wish I had a set in mine. Mines JDM spec so has the fabric glued to the seat foams, so not exactly easy to re-upholster even for someone like myself whom does automotive upholstery lol.
Excellent job btw, never done much hand stitching unless it's a steering wheel or gearknob but props, use a wax coated thread in the future if you ever have to face the same unpleasantness😂..
Excellent work Jafro, keep it up!
Hey Jafro, it was great meeting you in Harbor Freight today, wish we could have talked more, if you're ever near Aylett I'd love to have a beer with ya sometime and check out the Elantra in person, that car is actually what got me into sleeper builds! I hope you have a great rest of your day and best of luck with the VR4 restoration, always loved those cars! 👍
Sorry to hear about John’s passing. No doubt you are making him proud with all the hard work you’re putting into this project. I’m sure he’s gonna continue to keep an eye on you as you continue to work on it.
As for your stitching skills, you’re a product of a generation that was fortunate enough to have been thought those basic sewing skills. I too was lucky enough to have learned them at a young age. The basic skills are great for being able to expand into areas like saving upholstery. To fix things that others won’t or would be cost prohibitive to do so.
Thanks man! It's all those little skills that you didn't perfect added together that enable you to build that idea you imagined. Few of us can perfect all of the skills to the point of being professional. All of my other sewing ventures mentioned occurred in private schools and summer camp.
I was judged for these events in my life by someone half my age recently. Those things were referred to me as "points of privilege".
I grew up poor. My mom made my clothes. She is great at sewing. That's how I figured a sewing machine out or knew what a bobbin was. She worked a full time job, participated in medical experiments and even donated blood just to buy us groceries and keep a roof over our heads. For the years when I wasn't in public schools, my tuition was mostly paid by a charity that my mother begged for help from. The idea that these events are all somehow points of privilege come from people who are already too privileged and blind to even recognize the situation they are currently living in. My only privilege was having a parent that was willing to go to war just so I could have a chance. Summer camp is what your parents PAY FOR in order to be able to take at least a week's vacation from YOU. And they need it. They deserve it. Thanks mom!
@@Jafromobile sadly people are too quick to make judgments about people based on limited information. Just more reason to generally treat people with respect. Thank you for sharing. As a result of this, I actually thanked my mom for teaching me sewing skills as well as many other skills that I still use today and hope to pass on to my future children. Thanks again Jafro. I always enjoy watching your videos.
Grandiose and thorough as all get, I should save some of this for the rest of the weekend. Kudos! Those cars are gonna shine! And fav pull quote: 38:00 Let's Go! I ain't scared, I'll fix this thing myself. [Spoiler Alert!] Jafro Does Fix it Himself. And thank you too, John Cook. He is the Saturn V Booster to Jafro's mission to the moon.
Another great video, looking forward to whats to come!
Rest in Peace John.
My favorite thing for fasteners is the same thing I do for loose change. Throw it in a mayo jar with some hot water and some Dawn/dish soap. Then shake it. and rinse it till the suds are gone.
Another awesome video!
Hmm I can’t see you using any type of soap if the seats or the carpets? The soap will break down a lot of bacteria and dissolve organic matter. Just blasting it will get some of but also push some of it deeper in cracks and provide nourishment for it. I usually use saddle soap on leather with a horse hair brush. Then just wipe it if and condition. I bought my stuff as you did from a horse shop! For carpets you want something that dissolves and then lifts the dirt. Cool project 😊
There's 2 parts. A cleaner and a conditioner. The cleaner was the first step of every piece of leather. ...and I noticed the cleaner seemed to penetrate and soften the leather much faster than the conditioner, but it just continues with this conditioner. It sorta jump-starts the process. The carpets I'm not replacing will go to an extractor. I have a friend who runs a detail service. :D
The pressure washer has Crosstrek wheels
AE111 in the background? Turning into a New Zealand boy racer throw back car park
Oh yeah! My neighbors here are the best!
I am loving your videos. Started watching some from 5-10 years ago, nice hair choices these days. Grow it if ya got it (which I don't)
Instead of shoe polish you may try black leather conditioner I use redwing brand it seems to be lower shine
🎉🎉
3d print new red buckle buttons using UV resistant abs plastic? Or whatever type of plastic you need. Should work right? Would printed plastic be that much weaker vs cast/blown plastic? Just a thought for your brain to ponder. I mean it's just a button, its not actually doing any hard work right?
Have you tried Leatherique Rejuvenator and Pristine Clean? It transformed my BMWs interior with proper application and removal.
😎
Jaf is that a Toyota Levin I'm seeing in the back there!?😮
Yes!
@@Jafromobile I own the older ae101 with a 4th gen 3sgte AWD
Hi!
Five!
I have a base model fender if you want it.. in black
I'm in the midst of running part numbers through an archaic emulation on a computer assembled in 1997 at the moment. It's overheating, so I have to go do something else for a while... but I do believe the fenders are actually different. If I can alter that belief after running the part numbers through CAPS, I may take you up on that. I think the trim doesn't fit it if I'm not mistaken. Yes, I want to be mistaken.
where can I find this kit?
Rapscallion? A mischievous individual. I should work on my vocabulary. Nah,that ain't happening.
Looks like hail damage all over the trunk to me.
When I lived in Atlanta in the 80's and 90's, I experienced hail storms that do this. John bought this Georgia-raised car from its first owner's auction listing online.
@@Jafromobile it’s usually cause to write the vehicle off, you’ve got your body work cut out for you. Looking forward to it!
If I don't know how to do PDR by the end of it, I'll quit RUclips.
@@Jafromobile I enjoy watching you spend countless hours on laborious tasks I would never bother with. I wish you’d post videos more often, so I can empathize by drinking a cold one on my couch. I always learn plenty from your videos though, from porting and polishing, to the finer points of rewiring a vehicle, or the pros and cons of installing water meth. I have a project of my own, a ‘92 SC with a 1.5JZ but fortunately/unfortunately I have nowhere to work on it at this time. Water meth, ethanol, and polishing are very high on my list of things I would like to do to it. I will add PDR and body work to the list of things I would like to learn on a RUclips journey with you. John would be quite excited to see his project take shape, I’m sure you’ll make him proud.
Evoooos
Look, I know this comment is way late for you and a week late for everybody else but...
You should hit those seatbelt buckles with a coat of UV clear coat
Reason China gets free post it's a developing nation. Yeah.! Time to buy local.
P.S. Buto no yubiwa = Hog Rings
Never use saddle and tack stuff on automotive leather. They're not the same type of leather/finish
Like you said, except when it's AMG leather like this. Then it's right. Most "leather" interiors aren't leather, or are so processed so far they no longer resemble their original hide. The leather inside this galant is the same thing as saddle leather.
Problems are opportunities...FACT! New boss has a Scuby 1st gen. Time I got to be the boss!
Mitsubishi make bad quality cars. They only get it right with the Power crowd.
