There's a point where Donald Sterling asked V Stiviano "Do I make the game or do they make the game?" in reference to the LA Clipper players and coaches who earn the profits for the organization that make him wealthy.
It's as if Donald Sterling believes there are Clippers basketball fans who say "Let's tailgate outside the Staples Center and then go watch Donald Sterling tonight. I hear he has some athletic black guys running around him on the court".
He somehow is under the actual impression that the NBA franchises wouldn't exist without the wealthy owners who have control over the business of each team

After listening to the whole thing, it sounds like he was more worried about what others will think. He didn't want to have to explain to his racist friends why she is hanging out with black guys. It was more about others perceptions than full on racism. He just wasn't very good at explaining it. That's what I heard when I listened to it.
