Into the Winds - Bassadanza "Zoglioxa" (anonyme)

Voici une composition originale correspondant à la structure chorégraphique de la « Zoglioxa », une danse du XVème siècle dont la musique n’a hélas pas été notée. Elle est mentionnée dans un des premiers traités sur la danse, « De arte saltandi & choreas ducendi » (« Sur l’art de danser »), écrit autour de 1455 par Domenica da Piacenza, maître à danser à la cour de la famille d’Este. Cette danse appartient à la catégorie des « bassadanza » dont l’exécution requiert une grâce toute aristocratique : à leur sujet, Domenico mentionne que « à qui les utilisera en musique ou en danse sera offert les bénédictions du Ciel » !
Here is an example of composition based on the choregraphic structure of a 15th century dance called « Zoglioxa », whose original melody has unfortunately disappeared… Its name is mentioned in one of the first dance treatise called « De arte saltandi & choreas ducendi » (« About the art of dancing ») written around 1455 by Domenico da Piacenza who was dancing master at the Court of Este. This dance is a « bassadanza » and is supposed to be executed with elegance as well as with aristocratic grace. By the way, Domenico used to say that « those who will dance or play them [the bassadanzas] will receive the blessings of Heaven » !
