This actually helps so much! Im not pre-T im just trying to masculinize my voice for voice acting lol, but Im not quite sure how to combine all three exercises :
Assuming you're getting everything down correctly, try to do an exercise, return to baseline, and see if you can return back to that configuration again without it. Do an exercise again to compare, see if it sounds the same, and then try again. Eventually you'll be able to control the paramters without an exercise and it'll be more easy to combine them. You can also stack drills one after another. If you're trying to do low larynx height + high CQ/vocal weight, you can use a yawn while doing a pitch slide. Hope this helps!
A friend of mine who’s cis has the deepest voice I’ve ever heard he genuinely sounds like the voice distorter they use on crime tv to protect their identity, it’s shocking to me how much vocal range exists out in the world
The reason i'm watching this is because I am a girl who plays competitive games and i am constantly harassed for simply sounding feminine. Hopefully people wont assume i'm a woman now and will stop being so sexist every time i speak. Thank you so much!
this girl is a straight up wizard with her voice. listening to her change her voice was jarring in an incredibly impressive way. also this is very comprehensive and helpful! hands down the best tutorial ive seen for ftm voice training. if the creator sees this, thank you for making it!!
5:12 "No you do not need to stick your tongue out while doing this" Me: *slowly puts my tongue back in my mouth* "oh..." In all seriousness thank you so much for this video! It helps alot.
I started watching this as a cis female because I thought it would be cool to be able to lower my voice for fun but now I’m realizing this is a level of commitment I simply don’t have for something not that important to me. Good video though! I bet it helped a lot of people.
thank you so much!! Im non-binary afab, but i feel more comfy being more masculine and ive always hated my "girly voice", i hope this helps me, and also i have a question, can i sing punk/metal/rock/screamo with the masculine voice?
this was really educational and useful. I really enjoyed how you explained how the voice changes and why that "brightness" can be left in the voice. Its particularly important b/c some people (*cough* kalvin garrah) have tried to stigmatize some trans masculine voices with mean names
Outstanding!!! Ive been on T for 14 months and havent really noticed much difference. I cant sing as high as I used to and it feels like something is stuck in my throat. Im in my 50s, so I think T effects are slower at this age (that Ive seen and read). I thought it was impossible for me to change my voice but the yawnings have worked amazing results. Its almost Barry White level. Im so grateful. I thought if I had to have voice training it would make me a 'fake' masc. But, not anymore. Thanks so much for giving me the courage to try.
Pretty similar here. I started T age 30, although it was a rough start due to moving countries at the time and different laws. But yeah it’s been 2 years approx and I also can’t sing as high and constantly feel like I have something stuck in my throat (so strange, not sure what that is about). Did your voice ever drop further with T? If not did training help at all? The lack of change gets me down quite a bit tbh as it’s something I was particularly wanting to change from T.
@@hunt_er92 I hear ya. My voice was the change I wanted the most. 2 years now. The top range is less, which forces me to talk lower. But I can get very low if I make the conscious effort. I guess I'll have to make the conscious effort. I really need top surgery tho

Hello! Genderfluid here and really appreciate you sharing these exercises. Also thank you for talking about how resonance is BS it's rampant in voice coaching but anyone with baseline knowledge of vocal anatomy knows it's not helpful.
I'm not sure why this popped up in my feed since I'm a cis woman, but I'm going to watch it anyways. Learning to sound masculine seems like a useful skill.

This was really interesting! Even if I find it a little confusing:’)) it’s also really impressive how easily it sounds that you switch from a more masculine to a more feminine voice.
This is awesome. I'm FTM so this helps with my issue a lot, as well as with my voice acting career. I can either sound like a mouse or now do a voice deeper than anything I've ever heard before.
Hearing the explanation of the 'why' and not just the 'how' is super helpful. Also your descriptions made it really easy for me to visualize how everything works!
i think the trigger for me to start actually trying this out as a pre-T transmasc was that i finally got roblox voicechat, and some dudes invited me over to talk, but brushed me away as soon as they heard my voice. I wanna be able to talk to guys regardless of if they know im trans or not, at least online about mundane things like video games or something else. I remember hearing about it about 4 years ago, but it sounded too good to be true and my teenage self didnt bother looking into it further - and i regret it. I'm gonna trya nd reach my goal now to a somewhat passing voice, even if it passes for a teenage 14 year old AMAB lol
@@amaroselessons this is gonna sound mildly dumb but does it get stuck that way? like, do you end up defaulting to it after a while or is it always something you need to condition your voice to?
@@comradewindowsill4253 hi voice actor here lol this wont make any sense until you actually experience it but once you get into the swing of it, yes you need to be consciously aware "this is the voice i want to use" but beyond that it's no more work than pressing an on or off button doing any other voice (regardless of whether it's boymode, girlmode, or just a character) shouldn't take any actual effort after awhile, yes ofc for the first few tries it'll be hard and it's normal to need to concentrate more on it but if it NEVER seems to get easier then make sure you're not inadvertently harming your voice, when you get familiar enough with whatever voice you want to use to the point where you don't feel like you need to "find your voice" every time you want to use it, that's usually the point where you should realize it doesn't take any actual EFFORT don't focus so much on memorizing and replicating how it sounds, focus more on how it feels, i've been able to do the same voices consistently for around 5 years now without them changing with age (most of them aren't very strenuous, but there are a lot of them and i do them on a very frequent basis, so vocal health is something i've always needed to be more conscious about) this isn't so much for masculinization, but a good habit to form anyways, make sure you also do breathing exercises before doing a different voice i'd even call it muscle memory after a certain point, but you wanna train your lungs to be able to hold in a decent about of air without you having to take a big dramatic gasp (which is always purely performative, it never does anything useful, breathe like normal just longer trust) if you're a visual learner, you can also look at videos of voice actors in the booth! especially go for people like tom kenny, or keith ferguson, anyone you know who has a near unbelievable range (kf even has like at least 20 credits that i recognize but had no idea they were him LMAO) hopefully 8 months later this is still useful lol
"try and imitate the panting of a chihuahua, then try and imitate the panting of a labrador" *me trying to imitate as she speaks* "no you do not need to stick your tongue out" *stops*
Thank you so much for this! Having it physiologically explained with exercises for each aspect rather than being told vague and inaccurate instructions like "speak from your chest not your head" is so helpful.
I'm afab and nb (I think, I'm still not totally sure about labels) but I like being able to express myself in different ways when I feel more masc so this may be really helpful for me in the future, thank you!
I'm not trans, but I watched this out of sheer curiosity and found it fascinating! I never knew that there was more to making your voice sound masculine than just lower pitch. Well, if nothing else, I might be better at voicing male characters in D&D! Cheers!
Thank you so much for this! I have horrible dysphoria about my voice plus i very much enjoy voice acting so being able change my voice to actually sound masculine makes me incredibly happy
Hey, I just recently made the decision to start trying to masculinize my voice. I've been watching these videos and I was wondering if you have any idea what I should expect while I'm doing this. Is the Patrick Star voice an inevitable part of the practice? Should I try to use a lower voice when speaking in general? Thank you for making videos like this, you have such a command of your vocal range it really helps ease the anxiety I've had making this step
What you're describing as Patrick Star voice is probably because you haven't quite nailed down High CQ/Fold Thickness/vocal weight yet - Watch my other video on vocal weight to work on incorporating that into your voice. Practicing maintaining low larynx and a large embouchure will help you darken your voice and might get you read as a teen boy, but if you combine that with the increased vocal weight, you'll get a more adult-sounding masculine sounding voice. Continuing to practice all of these exercises will make them easier over time. Practicing vocal weight in particular daily for around 15-20 minutes (doesn't need to be all at once) is really important getting this configuration down - sometimes you might want to opt for just doing the exercise and holding it and not worrying about taking it into speech. When you get more comfortable with it, you can try and take it into your speech, but expect to lose the vocal weight as you continue speaking and adjusting to this new coordination. It's all about consistent practice. If you continue speaking with the lower larynx and large embouchure, yes, it will eventually become habitual, but it takes time. Listen to recordings of your voice while reading a paragraph and see if you can notice when your voice loses the quality.
@@amaroselessons Hey, thank you for such a quick and detailed reply! I wasn't sure where to start so I just typed in "voice masculinization" on RUclips and tried to browse what came up. I'm enby and accidentally discovered voice euphoria a couple of days ago when I was joking around making "silly" voices at work. While I was browsing videos, someone had made one referencing the "Patrick Star voice" and I got your video mixed up with theirs when I commented 🤦 So I'm sorry for that, the description resonated with me because I start to sound like him when I try to hold that lower sounding voice for too long. I'll check out your other videos and see what I can learn :) I keep finding exercises but those videos don't really go into detail about what kind of progress to expect. Maybe the other video you referenced will help. Thanks again!
@@amaroselessons Hi! I was just starting to work on these exercises because I also have decided to start masculinizing my voice. The one I'm having a really tough time with is the quotient slides and was scrolling through the comments to see if anyone else had a similar problem. This caught my eye because I'm a teen (so I guess I wouldn't mind being read as a teen boy, lol). My question is, could my age be a factor in why I'm having trouble? Or does it just take more practice than I expected? I just can't get that buzzing quality to my voice, and I'm worried I'm instead lowering my larynx instead by accident. Thank you though, this guide is very helpful!
@@rakew9231 Same here, I'm also a teen and can't figure out how to get that buzzing quality. This comment is a year old, so maybe you have some advice on how to start getting that buzz to your voice?
I tried speaking after the little dog big dog and had the most masc voice ive ever had! Im def gonna practice becuase my fem voice is what always seems to shatter my androgeny :( Ty so much!
I'm not trans, not trying to sing, I have literally no reason other than I wanna be able to switch between a feminine and masculine voice at random when talking to people
Thank you so much, Im ftm and It helped me incredibly quickly. I speak 3 languages but in every language I speak a little bit differently. In russian (my native language) my voice is very high (I later figured out that this is because of me being insecure around my transphobic family in the past) then german being something in the middle and english is usually deeper than german but not very much. I´ve been doing these exercises for some time now and I got more confident in general and I can actually talk much deeper in all 3 languages, it´s incredible!
It sounds really unnatural at the moment, but WOW I sound like a whole different person after just 10 minutes! I can only imagine what a bit of practice could do! Thank you!!
You are helping so many transmasculine people here, thank you so much!! When I started my transition a couple of years ago there was literally nobody doing it. Makes me so happy to see! Pre T me might have cried finding this AND! I get to profit from it now, post T. :D Funny enough I learned from playing D&D and having a big, burly character that I could indeed talk in a deep, full voice! And thanks to you I can practice that now and make it sound more natural. And also learn how to not hurt my vocal chords.
Wow, I'm just here for voice acting stuff (and admittedly I've been trans-questioning for a bit, so there's interest from that too), and I hadn't come across so much detail and precision on changing one's voice before! I'd really tried searching and came up blank, so this is incredible, especially with the example voices! Thank you! I'll have to look at your other content too.
One of my favourite exercises, I’m not sure what it affects but it helps me deepen my voice is repeating a word starting at a higher more typically feminine pitch and lowering it to as low as I can go without vocal fry and then speaking as much as I can in that lower tone. It’s what I did before finding any actual exercises and it’s helped me so I wanted to put it in the comments for other people to see (:
You're inSANELY talented, thank you so much for this!! I'm personally a non-binary VA with a Catholic parent so doing anything drastic isn't really possible atm. I seriously hate how high my voice is and hope that this helps me be able to at least feel more confident with auditioning for older characters!
I’ve been on testosterone for more than 2 years and have had hardly any change in my voice, so thank you for this. I have to watch it again cuz I don’t completely understand how you do the exercises but I’m really hoping this will help me 🥲 also the control you have over your voice is incredible
I found your channel last week. I have been wanting to lower my voice for many years now, and for the past 5 years I have trained myself to speak in a lower fem voice. I look at the progress from when i was 24 and now, 29 and I sound different. HOWEVER I found this video as well as your Vocal Weight video and I am blown away by the new tone I have achieved in 3 days. I am especially surprised that you run a whole discord with lessons?! you are doing so much to give back to the community. and I appreciate this valuable resource, and look forward to joining you guys for a group lesson soon.
I’m non-binary but I’ve always been really really insecure about my super high pitched voice. I can speak lower already and comfortably lower but it’s just more natural when I’m happy to speak in my squeaky high voice instead so I’m working on controlling when I use which kind of voice. This was so helpfull and thanks!
@ I’ve been using a few vocal training vids and learned that the trick is just to lower your larynx. It’s a lot more complex when you’re pre t cos there’s so many other factors you need to train but I think?? T made it so I only rlly need to focus on speaking “like a man” if that makes sense. Feeling a lot more confident with my voice now but I’ll admit I’ve gotten a bit lazy.
this is very hard because i really don't like to sound of my voice so having to analyze it so much while doing this is genuinely agonizing. thank you for this video though, I'm still gunna keep practicing with it
I've read so many articles on voice masculinization and this is the first thing that's ever actually clicked for me. It's digestible and makes sense with audible examples to follow. Truly thank you for this.
The way you can change your voice so much is absolutely insane. I was just trying these in a whisper and woah it’s immediate effects Thank you so much for making this
Tried the high note then sliding down, and there was already a huge difference!! ^^ tried it with singing too, that when I noticed the difference. I just need to learn how to keep it low without it getting higher for a longer time! But thank you so much ^^ I'm trans nonbinary, and while my voice was already kinda neutral, it was a high pitch neutral. I'm gonna keep practicing!
Thank you so much for making this tutorial, I've tried to masculinise my voice for so long just by "talking in a chest voice" and it's never worked, but this just made me realise that I was only ever really shifting my pitch, making me sound dopey as hell lol. This actually brought me to tears when I first attempted it, I actually started sounding like a guy, thank you again!
I've been voice training for almost 5 years now, and I clicked on this video to get some more tips. Very helpful! (Also, words of encouragement to anyone just starting: voice training does work and it works very well. My natural speaking voice is MUCH lower than when I first started, you just have to stick with it!! You got this!!!)
THANK YOUUU!! I’m a voice actor, but I’m also trans, so i really needed to learn how to do this, for both my identity and my hobby of acting! This’ll help so much in the audition and show, so THANKS!!!
Yesterday I tried lowering my voice and speaking differently and it was so euphoric. This morning I cried for an hour becase I "couldn't find my voice" and was so dysphoric using my "old voice" until my partner suggested I look up some videos of exercises to do. First I made sure to sing a bit and warm up my voice, then I watched this video and tried to follow the exerices, so thank you so much for this, I feel much better now.
i really appreciate you explaining that with testosterone, the voice still has residual brightness and space to drop. I've always been insecure that my voice hasn't dropped to sound entirely masculine and anxiously waiting for it to drop further, so hearing that i can help my vocal cords was very good for me.
You know what is weird? That i learned that such thing as open and closed quotient exist from a trans voice coach. I do not mean it in negative way, but as a compliment. I always though that my voice is stuck in soft mode. Even though I study this testosterone injected old school operatic singing and I am a low or lower voice lol. No coach or teacher i heard of speaks of this. At least not in this fool proof direct way with examples. So it helped my speaking and singing voice from the first moment. I just did not realize the source of the problem. I mean my open quotien low bio man voice was allegedly charming. Now it is an option, not a neccessity and defect. And I was not breathy. Wow, thank you
This video saved my life! I’m non binary and my voice is very high pitched (AFAB) and I hate it! I’ve started trying these suggestions in the video and I sound more masculine! Thanks so much. 😁😁😁😁
As a Nonbinary person and a classically trained singer, never have I been so glad I've been classically trained 😭 i have a real good grip on my range and i can sing from baritone to low soprano when warmed up properly, so i know i have the capability to speak in a deeper voice
Thank you so much for this video, you are an angel. But i can't ignore how EASILY you can change your voice jfc, it's incredible I still thinks you ask more people to talk for you bc lmao it's so different from one another
Amazing! While I can’t describe my relationship to gender in a simple RUclips comment, this video is also extremely helpful for me in terms of acting and privacy reasons. (With public filming and such so commonplace, I find changing up my presentation not just in appearance, but other ways makes me harder to track.)
I'm a cis man who has that bright quality in his voice you mentioned many trans men having, and I've always disliked it. This video is helping me too. Thanks.

You can also stack drills one after another. If you're trying to do low larynx height + high CQ/vocal weight, you can use a yawn while doing a pitch slide. Hope this helps!
@@amaroselessons Thank you! Ill try it! 💖

This is a video for everyone
Omg same✋😌
omg, that's why I'm watching this too! I'd like to try some pvp games, but don't wanna be harassed due to being female.

Its insane how you can replicate a typical trans masculine voice
I started watching this as a cis female because I thought it would be cool to be able to lower my voice for fun but now I’m realizing this is a level of commitment I simply don’t have for something not that important to me. Good video though! I bet it helped a lot of people.

Why is this me
this was really educational and useful. I really enjoyed how you explained how the voice changes and why that "brightness" can be left in the voice.
Its particularly important b/c some people (*cough* kalvin garrah) have tried to stigmatize some trans masculine voices with mean names
Yeah- it's really frustrating and dehumanizing :(. All voices are valid and beautiful here! I'm glad you found this informative!

This was really interesting! Even if I find it a little confusing:’)) it’s also really impressive how easily it sounds that you switch from a more masculine to a more feminine voice.

That's awesome, I'm so glad to hear that!
My voice hardly changed at all and I've been on T for like a decade. It is sooooo frustrating. I'm glad you made these vids.
Did anything help? I’m 2 years in and the change has been minimal…
I mean this in the best intentions possible, you are the audio version of a shapeshifter.
i think the trigger for me to start actually trying this out as a pre-T transmasc was that i finally got roblox voicechat, and some dudes invited me over to talk, but brushed me away as soon as they heard my voice.
If you're able to talk this way really well could you speak in a masculine voice for long periods of time?
Yup, you should be able to get to that point with enough practice!
@@amaroselessons this is gonna sound mildly dumb but does it get stuck that way? like, do you end up defaulting to it after a while or is it always something you need to condition your voice to?
@@comradewindowsill4253 hi voice actor here lol
this wont make any sense until you actually experience it but once you get into the swing of it, yes you need to be consciously aware "this is the voice i want to use" but beyond that it's no more work than pressing an on or off button
doing any other voice (regardless of whether it's boymode, girlmode, or just a character) shouldn't take any actual effort after awhile, yes ofc for the first few tries it'll be hard and it's normal to need to concentrate more on it
but if it NEVER seems to get easier then make sure you're not inadvertently harming your voice, when you get familiar enough with whatever voice you want to use to the point where you don't feel like you need to "find your voice" every time you want to use it, that's usually the point where you should realize it doesn't take any actual EFFORT
don't focus so much on memorizing and replicating how it sounds, focus more on how it feels, i've been able to do the same voices consistently for around 5 years now without them changing with age (most of them aren't very strenuous, but there are a lot of them and i do them on a very frequent basis, so vocal health is something i've always needed to be more conscious about)
this isn't so much for masculinization, but a good habit to form anyways, make sure you also do breathing exercises before doing a different voice
i'd even call it muscle memory after a certain point, but you wanna train your lungs to be able to hold in a decent about of air without you having to take a big dramatic gasp (which is always purely performative, it never does anything useful, breathe like normal just longer trust)
if you're a visual learner, you can also look at videos of voice actors in the booth! especially go for people like tom kenny, or keith ferguson, anyone you know who has a near unbelievable range (kf even has like at least 20 credits that i recognize but had no idea they were him LMAO)
hopefully 8 months later this is still useful lol
"try and imitate the panting of a chihuahua, then try and imitate the panting of a labrador" *me trying to imitate as she speaks* "no you do not need to stick your tongue out" *stops*
Thank you so much for this! Having it physiologically explained with exercises for each aspect rather than being told vague and inaccurate instructions like "speak from your chest not your head" is so helpful.
i sounded like moist critical.
CRYING
LOL

I'm afab and nb (I think, I'm still not totally sure about labels) but I like being able to express myself in different ways when I feel more masc so this may be really helpful for me in the future, thank you!
I'm not trans, but I watched this out of sheer curiosity and found it fascinating! I never knew that there was more to making your voice sound masculine than just lower pitch. Well, if nothing else, I might be better at voicing male characters in D&D! Cheers!
Thank you so much for this! I have horrible dysphoria about my voice plus i very much enjoy voice acting so being able change my voice to actually sound masculine makes me incredibly happy
so glad you found this useful!
Not transmasc but my friend and I want to start an animation studio and don't have the money to hire voice actors lol. This was really useful
Oh my god I also have he Patrick star voice 😂
@@rakew9231 Same here, I'm also a teen and can't figure out how to get that buzzing quality. This comment is a year old, so maybe you have some advice on how to start getting that buzz to your voice?

Thank you so much, Im ftm and It helped me incredibly quickly. I speak 3 languages but in every language I speak a little bit differently. In russian (my native language) my voice is very high (I later figured out that this is because of me being insecure around my transphobic family in the past) then german being something in the middle and english is usually deeper than german but not very much. I´ve been doing these exercises for some time now and I got more confident in general and I can actually talk much deeper in all 3 languages, it´s incredible!

You are helping so many transmasculine people here, thank you so much!! When I started my transition a couple of years ago there was literally nobody doing it. Makes me so happy to see! Pre T me might have cried finding this

This is such a great tutorial!! I always hated my voice and after doing these exercises I felt much more confident about it!!

I’ve been on T for two years and my voice doesn’t sound quite as deep as I’d like. I will try this out as much as I can.
how is it?
@ I’ve been using a few vocal training vids and learned that the trick is just to lower your larynx. It’s a lot more complex when you’re pre t cos there’s so many other factors you need to train but I think?? T made it so I only rlly need to focus on speaking “like a man” if that makes sense. Feeling a lot more confident with my voice now but I’ll admit I’ve gotten a bit lazy.
Your vocal range is insane
this is very hard because i really don't like to sound of my voice so having to analyze it so much while doing this is genuinely agonizing. thank you for this video though, I'm still gunna keep practicing with it
I've read so many articles on voice masculinization and this is the first thing that's ever actually clicked for me. It's digestible and makes sense with audible examples to follow. Truly thank you for this.

This video is incredible!! and suuper helpful, it makes so much more sense than the others I've watched. Thank you!
Thanks c:
i really appreciate you explaining that with testosterone, the voice still has residual brightness and space to drop.
