FIAT S76 - Beast of Turin trailer

- FILM UPDATE: I'm afraid I was a bit optimistic in suggesting February for a completion date. The car has still to be driven and proper paid jobs keep getting in the way. Hoping the full-length film will be done by the Spring - but there will be another small film of it being driven soon! :)
The two FIAT S76 cars were built in 1910/11 to take the land speed record from Mercedes' Blitzen Benz. In this prewar period the thinking was that 'bigger displacement is best' and there was an amazing range of monstrous machines. There was the 25 litre V8 Darracq in 1905 (which was the first car to do two miles in a minute), Mercedes built a comically long car called the flying Dutchman which had two huge engines, one behind the other. At 28.3 litres (and only 4 cylinders) the FIAT S76 has the largest car engine ever built. (There are a few cars around with larger engines - but they're aero engines) You may think that 300hp isn't great for such a big engine - but it has more torque than a Bugatti Veyron! . With the development of the aeroplane - and lessons learned in motor racing - engine design changed dramatically over the first world war - and it spelled the end for these behemoths.
The big FIAT tried to set records at various venues. At Brooklands it nearly went over the banking, they then drove it to Saltburn sands in the North of England on the public roads. The sand was in poor condition but it still reached 116mph. It was at Ostende in 1913 that the final attempts were made. It did reach a record speed of 135mph - but failed to do the return run needed to make it official - a new rule at the time. There's a clip here...
• Record di velocità a O...
At the wheel was racing driver Arthur Duray. He reckoned that first and second gear were okay, that third gear called upon all of his experience as a racing driver and that fourth gear needed the courage of a hundred men!
The cars - and the Russian Count who owned one of them - disappeared and were seemingly lost forever until Duncan Pittaway traced the engine of one and what he believes is the chassis of the other. For over 10 years he worked laboriously to reconstruct as original a car as he could - his one goal being to drive the beast which he'd seen in period photos. Using copies of the original FIAT plans, Duncan and his assistants Bruce and Tucker set about reconstructing the car - with specialists helping with the new bodywork and gearbox.
The video shows the first time the engine had started in over 100 years. The next task will be to take the car to a large open space for the first test-drive. I imagine there will be some fettling to be done before the car is used at VSCC (Vintage Sports Car Club) events - and driven on the road. It is hoped the car will take part in the Goodwood Festival of Speed - and will revisit Ostende later in the year.
The film is a trailer for a short documentary which will tell the story of the original cars and also the rebuild.

(apologies to those missing the Ólafur Arnalds' music - I never heard back about whether it was ok to use it and so have decided not to risk it)
the delicate sound of thunder
you mean satan
Loud pipes save lives... I'd love to pull up next to some straight pipe idiot and give him a taste of this. LOL
I am Italian and this video excites me, it shows me how technologically advanced my country was. If I think of the present I get so sad.
Fun fact: in 1911, this vehicle wasn’t just the fastest land vehicle, it was the fastest piece of transport, ever created by humans up until that point.
Italian design is still amazing. Italy as an economy never got the formula right on reliable, mass produced examples of that design, though. Don't feel bad.
А я пишаюся Італією, хоча й українець! Італійська техніка та італійська творча думка - це надбання людства! Що колись, що тепер!
That start up needs to be made into a ringtone!

This video deserves more views. It was a different era of car lovers make mad shit. And how good to see some guys resurrect this beast from the ashes. I love the old boys just sitting furher behind at the startup and cheering up. So hearthwarming.
Thanks for the nice comment - it was a very special day. I originally put the video on Vimeo and it went nuts - something like 6 million views in a week :) I thought there ought to be a copy on RUclips too. The excitement has calmed down a bit now.
A 28 litre 4 cylinder powerhouse. Unbelievable technology for its time.
One cylinder has a bigger volume than a corvette, and he has four of those
2:00 SWEET MOTHER OF JESUS !!!!!!!!!! 8-D
Here's a short list of things that are a bit quieter than the Beast of Turin running:
1. An Artillery barrage
2. The bombing of Dresden
3. Mt Vesuvius erupting
4. The Space Shuttle launching
5. An average Supernova

Don't forget Krakatoa, and the Tsar Bomb.

@@gerritvos5886 A shit ton
This was the most epic start up i ever seen!
"Gramps, what are the sparks coming out of the engine?"
"Oh those are just the rings seating into place...or leaving the engine to live elsewhere"
I'd bet my lunch money that starting this beast up never gets old. Even though its almost 100 years old. it's more diabolical than historical. May it be forever young !
Haha, it always draws a crowd - and it always surprises everybody when it does fire up :)
There's no replacement for displacement!
Big Rock 300hp at 1800rpm and 2000lb/ft
Oh you straight piped your 90's Mustang GT, that's cute, watch this....
'90s

One of the Bad boys of the old era for me
28 litres of 100 year old raw beast! - very impressive
Beautiful job
Thanks for all your hard work and dedication to keeping these wondrous beasties alive and thrilling us all
Thanks! (Though it should be said, I don't do the hard work - I just take the pictures :)
Well I may have lost a few decibels off the high and low end but ehh. It was worth it. Mental note: never turn up volume with soothing instrumental, intro music for any more Beast of Turin videos.
Very sorry about that. Hope the ringing stops soon :)
This car is a piece of art.
the way it shakes just in idle really gives it the name it has.
It's alive!!! Music you my ears and she is a beautiful beast!
My favorite motorsport video, best part starting at 1:45, the piano gets slower and finally fading out, 2 sec. of silence, and then: IGNITATION
Amazing that this engine came to life with just crancking it slowly over tdc.
And the size of it, it's enourmous.
+dieselmupke There has been some work on the carburettor and cam - it's much easier and more reliable now :) You get the compression with the handle - then a trembler coil makes the spark.
I love how when it starts up it basically just shakes and kicks around
Beautiful film trailer and stunning machine - incredibly moving moment. Saw the beast at Goodwood this year. Amazing, looking in that exhaust is like facing a pill box head on under heavy machine gun fire - Incredible!
beautifully filmed man
Thanks Tom!
Overalls and a tie... lovely.
1:59 nearly blew up my phone's speakers. What a sound
Sorry about that :)
@@StefanMarjoram I wasn't complaining. 😃 Lovely sound
What I love about this car is that it looks like something out of all creatures great and small and sounds like hell on earth.
2:14 ... the beast apparently runs on shotgun shells ... 0_o
SaintDude Gaming 😂😂😂😂 I know JESUS!
Later many large engines where started by shotgun shells.
Im pretty sure they started it with one. Right past tdc then shot it to start
theres some old tractors you load with a shotgun shell, prime the engine and hit it lightly with a hammer and boom tractor starts
Congratulazioni al proprietario....è stato come fare una specie di seduta spiritica della meccanica: hanno evocato e richiamato la vecchia Signora.
Senza marmitta fa un casino ... 😆
I'd like to see a 56-liter V8.
Love it! That's not a four banger - it's a four boomer!

Thank-you for the update, this is a stunning project, I literally had tears in my eyes when it first fired up :D. that sound is just godlike!.
Can't wait to see the completed film!

***** Chitty Chitty KABLAM! KABLAM!! =-D
***** I'm not usually a documentary person, but this is one I would love to watch. Is this still happening? Please let it still be happening.
From Italy, thanks for your great work on this Fiat! It's really a beast!
So glad you enjoyed it. It is quite something to see in person :)
wonderful film .... you have great timing Stefan
Thanks Mr Swamp! One day I'll finish the blimmin' thing :)
Until you turned off the tear in the eye. A piece of history. Awesome
Still less emissions than a Volkswagen;-)
also less maintenance...i guess
and it's honest about them.
Look at the amount of stupid and brainwashed idiots thinking their jokes that prove their lack of intelligence are funny.
@@derbigpr500 But is still true that VAG group sucks :D
epiphonium looks like someone loves his TDI Clean Diesel. Hows that NOx trap working for you?
Is this a car with a engine or a engine with a car? My ears blown away, that thing is a huge metal BEAST :).
Thanks so much for sharing and building amazing vehicles like this!
When you see it stripped down it is ALL engine!! 7ltrs per cylinder or equivalent to a big block V8 capacity in ONE CYLINDER!!
Cranking up this beast......... Respect,..... Looking forward to see, hear and smell this masterpiece on a VSCC meeting somewhere in the very near future. Regards, Luc.
and a skyline wont pass emissions WTF
its fine on this engine because if you would try to test it i doubt there would be much left of the testing equipment XD
there's a difference in a Nissan fail-line and a historical car.
@@onyourface207 yeah the skyline has no historical background right? Stick the beast of turin up your loose ass
thegtagarage umm, no it doesn't... compared to this!
This is a classic car and thus doesn't have to conform to modern emissions regulations
So it DID have an exhaust system at one time!
I think every time it starts up, the chassis bents 😂
Awesome machine. From a time where men were men and not candy that needs bluetooth, heated seats, start-stop systems and parking sensors. :)
I never thought i would fall in love .... But yes my heart beats only for such cars! Very very very very nice Vid mister!!!! 5 Thumbs up! greetings from germany
This must have been the car that prompted the sayng:- " One Stroke - One Street - 1 Gallon" !
Stefan, I enjoy your drawings you have a gift. This video is superb in its simpleness.
Jesus this thing is a beast!!!! Love it!!
They should put this engine on Punto series...
Abandoned Cars & Vehicles Hell yeah 😂 I want to see this engine on my mother’s 2004 Fiat Punto 🤣
Beautiful. Thank you for sharing
The name fits. The BEAST! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻. Where is this car homed? I love the early Baracuda in the background!
Luffaman Google 1965 or 66 Plymouth Barracuda and I think you will see the resemblance.
Are there any pictures of the car before they restored it? I'd like to see what they had when they got it.
Not a lot - pretty much just a chassis and an engine.
What a brilliant project you chaps are onto. Love it! Keep it up, I can't wait to see it driving :D
Amazing rebuild, but i have to ask you guys for a one thing. At time 0:28sec, that part of engine is a water pump? Or lubricating system? Thanks a lot for answers 😊
That's right - it's the water pump :)
Fiat Auto-Mitragliadora ... estas mentes italianas não têm limites ... Sonido tricolore diavolizante !
Beast reborn ❤️❤️ FIAT ❤️❤️
Very neat! This vid is 4 yrs old, and this Beast of Turin just ran at Goodwood, a couple days ago...2019
splash Goodwood and Chateau Impney - but not Silverstone.
@@StefanMarjoram oh, i thought it did a lap at Silverstone...Yes, it was at Goodwood that i seen it then. What a machine!
I could just imagine thinking about owning this enslaved thunder and power.
I was laughing like a maniac when that engine started up. XD Can't wait for the documentary!
Any updates on the documentary film ? I’m so eager to watch it
Sorry to keep you waiting - life keeps getting in the way. Am going to try to finish it in January :)
@@StefanMarjoram good work takes time 🙏...this car stirs my soul as I’ve got a soft spot for fiats and aero engined cars
still one of my favorite videos of yours!
Instigating: a work of art on four wheels.
Congrats! What a machine.... a real BEAST
That sound is wonderful. I like it
That top dead center noise lmaoooo soooo great
The ignition on normal engines creates an exhaust sound depending on the bore, stroke, amount of cylinders, rpms etc this engine does not have an exhaust sound it's just very loud and intimidating explosions
That's the lovely thing about big prewar engines. Most of the time the rpm is in the hundreds, giving you plenty of time to observe how the engine works :)
@@StefanMarjoram yes i love being able to hear all of the moving parts in this massive engines
Did you SEE how much torque that thing had when it started?! Nearly kicked it over on it's side! (O.O)
+Treetop64 2,000lb/ft of torque apparently :)
Bloody Hell! The Napier Bentley 24 Litre W12 only has a piddling 1400Ibs/ft!!!! And that manages to melt tyres at any speed!!
call me crazy, but as soon as the engine fired up, I heard its voice screaming "I LIVE !!!!!"
Crazy 😂
you know it's a serious engine when the water pump looks like a turbo
I'd love to see the version with the exhaust fitted.
Great video - thank you very much! :-)
Oh, you, pretty chitty bang bang, pretty chitty bang bang we love you! Lol
What a wonderful more than 100 years (!!!) old car. But one very unromantic question from an engineer: What is the consumption of this 28 litre monster engine. I would think it is something with 3 digits ahead of the litres/100 km...
I can't give you an exact figure - but having just done a 500 mile road trip I can say that we did stop at a lot of stations - though it's not as horrendous as you might think because the engine turns incredibly slowly by today's standards. 128mph at 1000rpm :)
@@StefanMarjoram Thanks for your quick answer and have fun with your S76!
Bellissimo lavoro di restauro 🙌
Theyve unleashed the fires of hell !!!!!
My god that whole ass car fucking moved a good 8 inches when it started
Any news about the movie ? I am looking so much forward to see it !
Holy crap.... that was awesome!
FIAT, all this when Enzo Ferrari was still a child and played with wooden wheels ❤
Hi,
congratulations, fantastic video, we know what it means to restore

Beautiful.
grande grande grande!!! great job and great people! thanks :-) Grazie
1:55 Engine Start
You see the man crancking the beast, followed by a little cough. Then the beast takes a deep breath, and opens the gates to meet “il Diavolo”.
It was a bizarre thing to witness. Now that the engine is running better it has calmed down a little but it's still very impressive :)
1:59 Look how *violently* the chassis rocks as the engine starts up. If the man starting the car was still holding the hand crank that would have destroyed his wrist!
The first time it was started there were still some issues with carbonation and timing etc. Now, after a few years of fettling and use it can (reasonably) safely be started on the handle :)
Holy Shit, the Italiens do it Better :-)
I'm really happy when the old cars like The Beast of Turin are back to life.❤🩹🚘
My compliments with the marvelous videography on this amazing beast. What is the piano song from?
Thanks very much - so glad you liked it. The music is some royalty free piece I purchased. Originally I wanted to use an Olafur Arnald piece - which had a similar feel but was much nicer :) ... ruclips.net/video/W9t3mbv2Hd8/видео.htmlsi=ZVxclsELQceR4Akr
