Unboxing Utah: What It's Like Living In Utah

  • Is everyone in Utah a Mormon?
Is everyone in Utah a member of the LDS?
Seriously, is everyone in Utah Mormon?
We’ll answer those questions and more. So, grab your mountain bike and your BOM, we’re gonna unbox the state of Utah!
Open: Oh a Mormon church. Or a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. This is a very important part of Utah’s culture. But it’s also very private. Like if you’re not Mormon, YOU can’t go inside. But Mormons say it’s not about secret. It’s about sacred. The Mormon church is a mystery to a lot of people, and a very uniquely American religion. Members of the mormon faith are aware that they are sometimes seen as a source of mystery and suspicion. The membership numbers for the LDS are shrinking, and today, about 1.7% of America’s population is Mormon. That’s about the same number as the Jewish population.
Yes, it’s true that Mormons have a big influence on the politics and everything else in the state, but this whole state isn’t Mormon. Sorta. In order to get a well rounded view of the state of Utah we need to get out of the church and out of the home and head out into the rest of the state and see what else is going on. Only then can we truly know what it’s like to live in Utah.
This is Utah. As you’ll see, most of the population is in the Salt Lake City metro area, and that area is growing super fast. There’s also a lot of other stuff going on in Utah, though, especially when it comes to exploring the outdoors. Utah is a very interesting state, and there’s something different around every corner.
We’re going to begin here in Southwest Utah. Now southern utah is one of the prettiest if not the prettiest part of Utah. Right here along the Arizona border are many of Utah’s national parks, touristy towns and St. George.

Utahn here! 👋 Born in Glendale, raised in West Valley. At ~25 I moved to Midvale. I’ve now lived in Missouri for almost 6 months. Utah is absolutely amazing. West Valley crime can suck. But it definitely isn’t terrible. I’ve been on almost all sides of Utah. When I was homeless, I was always so surprised by how many people were willing to make small acts of kindness. The laws determined by the church are definitely the most annoying thing. Rent is high, house prices are high, but the pay is pretty decent in most places, & the organization of the state makes it almost all okay. I wish more states would adapt the same “road organization” Utah has.

The quality of life has diminished as a result. Housing, food and other prices have escalated while the wages have remained low. Crime has definitely increased and downtown Salt Lake was once a safe place to be in the evening if you were alone. That’s no longer the case. The temple is NOT a church. I manage an apartment building in Seattle and had multiple residents relocate from Utah which was a complete nightmare. They moved to Seattle for a Church group and immediately started complaining about everything and their neighbors. Seeing them transition into a large city like Seattle was a bit entertaining. They started changing their tune and realized that living in a big city has a lot of variables that are not in your control. This goes the same for residents from Idaho. Definitely was a learning and entertaining experience.

I have had neighbors tell their kids they can't play with my kids because they don't go to their church. This has happened in different places I've lived here. In MY opinion church and state are not separate and most people I know are for the GOP no matter what.

Traffic is terrible and home prices are sky high from what they used to be. All the recreation areas are way overcrowded. Not mormon but I'm born and raised in the Salt Lake area! I don't intend to leave. I've put down roots here and Salt Lake is the only urban area in the western US that's still affordable. I'm not leaving anytime soon. Southern Utah is gorgeous and is the best nature exploration I've ever encountered as well, plus Vegas and some really hip towns in Colorado are nearby as well.
As far as polygs go they do largely hang in Hilldale and across the state line in Colorado City, AZ. Eastern Utah is mostly meh honestly outside of Moab. I speak as someone who was born in Vernal and have visited as an adult... Mehhhhh.
I'm well practiced but I'm really good at ignoring the church, therefore I lead a really happy life in Utah.
Edit: and I did get my name removed but yes. Less than half of the member count is active and well less than half the population is active in the church. That's absolutely correct.

My entire family has always been supportive of my choice. I have never met someone in Utah who hated me because I wasn’t mormon, and I lived in a small town. I would say that people here are far more concerned about politics than they are religion. They don’t want left leaning people moving here from California. I will say, if you are a liberal or even lean left, stay out of small towns. They will harass and bully you.

9:00 when you talk about the Mormons, they're led by both the conferences up at the Salt Lake temple and tabernacle, but also by BYU in Provo, which trains missionaries and is one of the leading language schools in the country where they offer many world languages. There is also a BYU campus in Idaho.
14:00 one of the reason the problem with homelessness is rising is partially because there is a large wage gap in the state. Apartments start around $800 a month, but the minimum wage there is still the federal rate, so many entry-level jobs only pay between $8-10 an hour.

@@rayb.6537 I have been hearing that SLC is getting bad with homeless. I used to work right downtown back in 2012 and it wasn't bad at all then. A few would hang out near the entrance to City Center on Main Street, and of course Pioneer Park had them milling about all the time, but other than that it wasn't so bad.
I can't tell when I talk with people from back in Salt Lake if there really is a homeless problem or if it just seems bad to them.
