Engagement ≠ Fun ► A Response to Call of Duty's Developers

  • At the 2023 Video Game Awards, Christopher Judge made a joke about how his award speech in 2022 was longer than the campaign for Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3. This prompted some of its devs to make posts on Twitter, making claims that Call of Duty blows God of War out of the water in terms of player engagement after completing the game.
    It's natural to want to defend a product you've worked on, but my question is why are the devs focusing on player engagement? Is it really the end-all-be-all of player satisfaction? I don't think so. Do you?

    Call of Duty's engagement optimization actively makes the game AND the community worse. I recently uninstalled and won't ever engage with their games again. Then Activision released a glorified dlc as a standalone $70 game. Meanwhile, Santa Monica gave us Valhalla with little fanfare, and it's a loving capstone to everything our beloved hero has been through. For FREE.

      I completely agree and think your comment is spot on but at the same time their approach to CoD also makes them a shit ton of money in the short term and that's all they care about so yeah, this will keep happening until they burn the franchise to the ground.

    If you have high player engagement and abysmal scores from both players and critics then you have created the perfect carrot on a stick for humans to the benefit of no one. So congratulations on the net negative impact of your labor. Hope they at least paid them well.

    RUclips seems to have eaten my previous comment on this video, but I wanted to say that I appreciate your perspective here. "Time spent" as a metric seems to be on the rise in areas outside of video games as well, and it's one I think people should be especially careful with, because it can so easily flatten unique experiences together. Also, as you point out, it fails to indicate how much people actively enjoy whatever it is they're spending time with.

      @LastProtagonist  6 месяцев назад +1

      Sorry about the original comment. This one came through though! Yeah, I thought about covering how player engagement works as a smokescreen for what players actually want to spend their time doing, but I think that's probably its own subject

  • @stellabee2026
    @stellabee2026 6 месяцев назад +3

    it seems like a lot of the devs that got mad who said something kind of missed what Christopher Judge actually said imo
    mw3’s engagement is driven by online co-op not the campaign, and knowing that would happen, they (more likely Activision knowing that) didn’t put enough effort into the actual campaign for people to legitimately consider it a fun and/or good game.
    and yeah, if i was one of the developers for it i’d probably be sad in a corner staring at my sg1 box set when i heard him say it, but it doesn’t mean it was wrong for the game to get called out.
    unless it’s an mmo people shouldn’t have to sink hours into co-op to get their money’s worth for a game

    As someone whos been playing cod with his bros since Big Red 1(skipping some around the infnite warfare era,WW2, Vanguard ect) these last two cods are a literal CHORE to play. You HAVE to spend so much time using guns you have no interest in, so you can unlock attachments/guns you actually want to. That has to be responsible for the high engagement because its literally grinding. Im not sure who thought this was a good idea, but they've been ruining the series with these changes

    • @LastProtagonist

      Big oof. I had to tap out with Advanced Warfare and them adding in a lot more "neon" camos to the games. I did pick up the remaster of CoD4 and had fun with it, but then they started adding in that extra bullcrap that no one asked for and it left a bad taste in my mouth.

    • @TomSNC

      @LastProtagonist I'm on the same page with you. Just imagine, you want to use this particular SMG, they make you level up a particular Sniper to Unlock a LMG and once you hit a certain level with it the smg is unlocked. But you want a sight or something to attach to it? Go level up a specific marksman rifle. They found a way to bloat engagement time. Awful

    I really didn't think more of it than people using the game dev version of "Oh yeah!? Well, I make more money than you!" At least it felt to me that those tweets radiated that sort of vibe. They had that inherit immaturity to them, because in reality there's not much else they can throw at beloved games like GoW. If such devs also argue "it takes a lot of work to make these games!" well... so does sewer maintenance. At the end of the day, they really have nothing to say.

    Most triple A devs treat their games as a product, not art. The goal is selling to the most people, not making a good game. I've really been enjoying a lot of indy games lately. They put a lot more heart into it than these soulless corporation types, and it's good to see bigger devs like Larian bucking these trends.
