So late I know.. It's a bit rough around the edges because they've playing a bunch of these sets at what I asume is some sort of festival for the music industry insiders and promoters, to present new and upcoming bands. Aswell as their backline amps weren't their own/what they were used to. I'm no expert on the bands history but this seems to have taken place before their big album came out so maybe that's why their backing track is pretty striped down still as they were still experimenting with using backingtracks while playing live. I personaly like the more striped down sound, it sounds like the band is working harder/putting more into their performance.
haha that was just because of the horrendous sound and monitor mix on stage, plus they were using borrowed amplifiers and drums. but actually your comment is still correct :) love
I saw them back in January 2014, their first Australian gigs, in small pub venues. Matty just casually strolls through the pub before the show talking to people and taking photos. Was so cool.
it's one of the songs they cycle through, their setlist currently seems to have about 3 blank spaces where they decide on the day what they play. At the show I went to last year they did Me, You, and Fallingforyou
the 1975 is my favorite band. i think they are all crazy talented but can we admit george absolutely carries them these early live performances. he's incredible
You have to love the simplistic charm and sloppiness of the performance. Being tight is very cool to see, but the sloppiness has a unique vibe to it. Matty doesnt have his flamboyant atmosphere and persona he has now. He seems nervous and evens scared. Seeing their growth in their live performances is awe inspiring.
Mental like how far they’ve come since this, I was lucky enough to sell Ross a car a couple of years back and they’re just really relatable, easily my favourite band👏🏻
did anyone else hear the comment "it may or may not be one of the best songs ever" by someone at 17:20 ish? I'm guessing he was referring to Sex, as the crowd seemed to love the hell out of it.
This type of era of The 1975 is the main reason why they've become one of my favorite bands. Now, their fanbase grew. Shit changes. I think their latest works are catered from that. I just miss their first album vibe.
Hmmmm if you miss that, I have a band called Marquee Grand that’s looking to bring that kind of sound back into existence with our next works. Check us out! www.marqueegrand.com
To be completely fair, every artist grows and evolves over time. I know a lot of artists who historically change their sound and aesthetic from album/tour to the next which just propel's the music's central narrative. I think Matty and the band have honed in on their craft for storytelling and analysis of the current social landscape. But, eh, not everyone's taste, I get that. I just think there's value in knowing it's not really just them that this happens to.
Anthony Benjamin - I was joking FFS Anthony..... it was not a serious comment. I’ve been following this band since 2013 and I actually attended both Reading and Leeds festivals. Awesome band they really are the dogs bollocks. Don’t take shit so literally man lighten up a bit.
I can imagine a lot of people that were at this show getting turned off to The 1975 because how rough around the edges Mattys voice is here, it's probably a monitor issue but it affects the whole show negatively sadly
He was up 4 days straight ans on adderall and played a lot of Shows in that timeframe afaik from an Interview. Id for sure wouldnt even have a voice in such a state. So considerin the circumstances he did pretti alright (sure i know not perfect and very rough) and i guess it didnt hurt them in the long run 😉
@@ms_needle wow shit, I'm so so happy he's sober now. That's the reason I don't want this era back, even though the music was more iconic, I would never want Matty to be that miserable again.
@@julaiyyy oh no i think he was given the pills not knowin what they were by someone else. He was big into Coke and heroin later on and that was just a very hectic schedule bc their manager booked them into as many shows as possible to get them out there so i think they had to play lots of shows in a row in a very small time frame and also travelled a lot therefore not much sleep. The rest with the addictions came later i would say. But yeah im glad hes sober now too. Not easy for sure.
Tbh, I like the crowd better today! It looks kinda dead here which is understandable since noone knew about them. I miss the old concerts (I was lucky to attend the Cockpit and barfly in 2012) but I can definitely still enjoy them today! The crowd at front row has grewn up together with the band which is beautiful :D
I'd rather have caught them at a middle point where the crowds weren't too big but still knew the songs. I don't think this crowd would be fun to be in because nobody there fucking knows who they are yet.
When I was only 8 yrs old, I fell in love with The Beatles. Now that I'm 23, I feel like they did reincarnated to these amazing dudes ❤️ I discovered them when I was 16 and GAHD! The music and how it took me from different dimensions of my life. If you have time please check my The 1975 song covers ❤️ thank you it's deeply appreciated
Its weird how Matty was stiff as a board and didnt know what to do with himself when he didnt have a guitar in his hands.. and now its like he would prefer to never play guitar. Also, Stage Sound must've been horrible, because as a musician you really only feel comfortable asking the FOH to fix your monitor mix once before you start feeling like a dick... and they were having issues the whole freaking time here, you can tell they weren't feeling it. Bad stage sound blows.
yeah dude. it's impossible to put on a good show when FOH don't know what tf they're doing. even when the band asks multiple times to help them out and they still can't get their shit together
I'm also cracking up that they have two QSC153's (love QSC) on each side with no angle tilt so the crowd must have been getting awfully terrible phasing at all points of the floor LOL - and for me as a FOH engineer, I always tell my artists to signal/roast me in any way they want if they have a problem with their mix bc if they cant hear eachother in the way they want, they play worse which makes my overall mix worse for everyone
This is such a a great set list. You should be their encore song as it's not on any main albums (just the ep and deluxe version on the self titled) and it goes soooo hard and is one of their best songs still to date.
I saw them back in January 2014, their first Australian gigs, in small pubs. Matty just casually strolls through the pub before the show talking to people and taking photos. Was so cool.
Their first album signed me, so emotional and true. 2013 for me was "listening the 1975 while smoking with my comix on my bed, thinking about her". Now they're looking lost, their music seems so dispersive.
EthanMakesVideos no mames, i get what you're saying. Recently I saw them live with their new set, it's amazing. But the crowd was full of girls (teenagers) also some mothers. Matt had to repeatedly ask everybody to shut up so we could listen to john's solos or just the intrumental medley or the slow songs. He also asked us to stop recording with our cellphones during Me, fallingforyou and Medicine, so we could enjoy the music. Matt had to stop the show beacuse everybody was pushing in the pit, it was so frustrating. Their shows are incredible, divine and a great experience; but certainly their fan base is getting younger and worse. I don't mind, they're still making good music.
@COSMOB3AR Lol true. But I meant back then there was more of people who were actually there for the music and appreciation of it than for the band members, as is the case now. There's just a whole lot of screaming nowadays than there was back then. I'm not saying they're not enjoying it now I'm just saying they probably appreciated these performances a lot more than they do their recent acts. Matty has even said it himself in interviews.
Came back to watch some old 1975 footage from SXSW…wasn’t expecting to see me in the footage throughout two rows from the front. The only one going ‘wild’. Which means ‘singing along’ haha
I guess out of all the songs SEX suited the roughness of the performance. The rest are better cleaner in my opinion. Or maybe because that was how i was introduced to them. Love their cleaness.
It's cool to see a bit of a rough-around-the-edges performance from them considering how polished their live set is now
Ethan Thomas so stripped down. sounds like there is one synth track otherwise they're playing everything. their whole cd is playing with them
+Ethan Thomas I actually prefer the rough edges to the super-polished live sound.

@Blue&Green I have to disagree on that but his voice has for sure improved live after gettung clean

I honestly enjoy them just as much as the big ones. There's a far more intimate vibe.
"This song is about Sex. It is called Sex"
Matty Healy, legend
Big Daddy clearly too ignorant to miss the joke
"You" is such a great tune, should make a comeback in their future sets.
