People need to realize that Russia is not Cuba, North Korea, or Iran. While those heavily sanctioned countries are small and weak, Russia is HUGE with a ton of resources and a well established industrial base. But more importantly the majority of Russians believe that the West poses a threat to them and are willing to make the sacrifices to make Russia strong and this to me is an important political victory for Putin that many Western politicians don't want to publicly acknowledge.

You are also not considering the fact that someone might change his opinion, with time more facts might become apparent, or there are generally things that are hard or even impossible to predict (like how fast Russia recovered their supply chain, how hard really Putin keeps his wealthy "friends" under his boots how China will act towards Russian Federation etc).

Prigozhin was loose cannon and I'm surprised it took that long to get rid of him. As for Russian economy, they inherited a Soviet era industry, which is primarily a heavy industry. Because it generates good revenue stream they continued in that direction. With sanctions now they have focus on import substitution. Therefore, just like in Soviet era, now again they have to rely on their own efforts and just like in Soviet era they will do just fine. With sanctions, the west is creating the new Russia and the result will not be what they wanted. Will they ever learn?
It is clear as to what the Americans wanted with the sanctions: breaking the economic relations of the EU and Russia and they succeeded. But what did the Europeans get out of this ? From now and next 5 years the EU public will demand accounting. Watch the governments fall like dominoes.

Hello I am from Russia. I have known this channel for several years, I liked learning interesting facts about geography and history before. After some time, the author began to focus on politics, in particular the anti-Russian point of view. This really confused and upset me, not because I am a fan of Putin or the war - but because this point of view simply did not reflect the reality that I saw outside my window every day.

No, Wagner did NOT "launch a full-scale rebellion against the Russian government." They launched a MUTINY against the Russian military and the Ministry of Defense, specifically. They've been at odds from the very beginning, and after lack of supplies led to high Wagner PMC deaths during the battle over Bakhmut, that's when Prigozhin launched a tirade against them. There was quite obviously a power struggle between them. Furthermore, the Ministry of Defense is close to Patriot PMC and Redut PMC, with Shoigu personally having links to the former.

    • @unnamedshadow1866

It was all a Tactic by Putin.
Putin never wanted the attacks to be on Bakhmut. He wanted to move from the East, focusin on the Kharkiv and Sumy Oblasts, while the main Trench Warfare would remain in Zapharozie. Bakhmut was an unnecesary front.
Taking Kharkiv and Sumy Oblasts basically would give all the Eastern Most regions of Ukraine under Russian control, making mobilization and re-supply far simpler, meaning their offensive would've most likely targeted on dividing Ukraine by the Dnieper River.
But Prighozin got delusions of grandeur and wanted to attack from Bakhmut, this cut supplies to Zapharozie and Kherson Oblasts where were where the main of offensives of Ukraine were coming.
Now Putin has decided to use the Wagner Group to create a Paramilitary in Belarus (specially since Poland is the only EU country that is open to actually send troops) so having them there is both a fear tactic as well as setting up a potentially worst case scenario.
Lukashenko agreed to have the Wagner Group in Belarus, because i am sure Putin will try to have him to take a leadership role in the Wagner Group.
A loyalist like Lukashenko would ensure Wagner Group would attack the targets that Putin believes are the ones that are necessary.
Also Putin knows that this conflict is starting to become a 2nd Cold War, and China is still unwilling to join.
So the Wagner Group is going to be used to spark conflicts in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
Putin knows that the USA is still the most powerful nation in the world.
The only way he can beat them is the same way the USA beat the USSR.
Not by direct conflict, but by forcing them into conflicts that will gain them the hatred of the local population, and conflicts that devolve into Insurgency type of Wars.
The USA has proven for the past 20 years, that they are not good at Insurgency Type of Wars. It only causes the people in those regions to resent them and hate them.
Putin wants that hate to reach the point where they ditch the USA and EU entirely.
This is why what the Republicans are planning with Mexico is incredibly concerning.
Attacking the Cartels on Mexico is going to be a dumb move, just like how the USSR invaded Afghanistan.
Putin knows this, he may be the President, but at his core he's still a KGB Agent.
He knows how the USSR fell, and he knows those same tactics can be used by them as well.
The conflict in the Sahel Region will destroy France both Economically and Energetically. Add the fact that France has allowed a huge influx of migrants from those same regions, and they will even spark resentment within France itself.
Putin knows that a weak EU will force the USA to return to their role as the World's Police, but they no longer have the manpower to fulfill that role.

Speaking about the "same military budgets", we should not forget that in Russia the salary is 3-4 times lower than in the EU/US. This means that the production of clothing, food, equipment will also be cheaper.

    • @Mir0v0i
      @Mir0v0i 8 месяцев назад +196

Food yes, but not clothing or equipment of which perhaps 90% are imported. Russia failed and continues to fail to manage domestic production of anything except home-grown food (so-called "импортозамещение", import replacement, has been a total failure). They have to import electronics, clothes, high-tech components and so on from abroad - and they buy them in dollars, which weakens the ruble and makes prices higher.
Before the war, I once compared the prices in US and Russia for common goods out of interest, and while salaries/rent/food prices were at least 2 times higher in US, the price for iPhone or Playstation or any other consumer electronic in both countries were about the same, which means for Americans these things are vastly cheaper (since higher salaries) than for Russians.
Most of Russians now exist below the poverty line (Russian economic authorities even had to change the definition of povery in order to change that and make it seem like things are OK) and are very vulnerable to any economic changes. This makes them susceptible to enlisting in Ukraine war as a cannon fodder from a purely practical standpoint ("if I die, at least my family will have the money to go on"), but it also makes them desperate since they have nothing to lose (more fuel for possible revolution) and it further strains the economy, since poor people are increasingly dependent on government handouts, do not contribute as much in taxes and are taking more and more credits from Russian banks which they have no hope of returning. This credit bubble is getting so bad some economists are already warning that it can collapse just like it did in the West in 2008.
Bottom line: nothing is ever simple, but I would avoid the conclusions along the line of "Russian economy is doing fine because it didn't collapse yet" or "Russians love Putin just because they are", which some may draw from this video. There could happen some very drastic and sudden changes in the coming year.

    • @selfcapybara
      @selfcapybara 8 месяцев назад +27

@@nikolavideomaker that's what should have been the conclusion for the video. All things considered Russia is doing quite well economically for a nation at war with cut ties to most of its major trading partners.
But that "quite well" definition is relative, and in absolute values it means a severe economic crisis that undid about a decade of economic and societal development and destroyed most of the sources that allowed for reasonably high standards of living.
The problem with sanctions is that a lot of them work against each other. Limits imposed on the capital movement made sure that foreign business isn't investing in Russia but it also means that Russian capital holders are investing domestically which wasn't the case traditionally. The effect of capital flight thus cancels out and I would argue that the impact of domestic capital is actually higher than foreign.
Same goes for a lot of other limitations - they hurt growth but also make the country more resilient in the shorter term

As a Russian I want to say couple of words on Putin's approval rating. Some people say in comments that it's crazy to see 80% Putin approval in a country where you can be repressed or put in jail for a few words or likes in social media, and it's a very good point. There are couple of things too keep in mind. First it's important to understand when people in Russia are asked to take part in a social survey, they take it as a communication with a government, because even if it's an independent agency, people don't trust, it can be FSB agent (or some agencies that report to FSB) as well, and the question "Do you like Putin(Do you support war)?" will sound like "Do you support Putin or do you want to go to jail for 15 years?". Secondly you need to take a look at response rate in these surveys, statistic says that less than 5% respondents answering to the questions, all others 95%+ people are saying that the don't have time for it or not interested, the reason why response rate it that low is understandable, people don't feel safe sharing their opinions.

I'm not sure I believe your explanation. There are opposition and outside surveys Russians will be familiar with, such as universities, Levada, Gallup, etc.
Anyway, It's not easy to get responses to political questions in America, either. Most people are busy or want to be left alone or just haven't thought about it. I once tried to get peoples opinion on public transportation, it took me all day to ask 200 people, and I got only 44 answers. Of these, about 2/3 were pro public transportation or thought there was too little. Does this mean most people secretly hate trams and busses? Obviously not. Most people just didn't give a damn to answer.
There have also been external inquests which validate the results that come from Russian sources. For example, 2013 USAID study "Mood in Crimea" very closely matched the next year's Crimean independence referendum results. Similar for western journalists asking in Lugansk and Donbas about what people wanted with regards to rights and belonging.

Russia suffered the most? What about Belarus, Poland and Ukraine that each lost a way higher share of population in WW2 (25% & 20% & 20% respectively)
What about China, which lost unimaginable numbers of people to its civil war?
What about Afghanistan, which has been in continuous war & anarchy for over 30 years.
What about North Korea, which has a way more repressive & regressive regime that even Stalin was back in the “Good Old Days”, to the point of being under continuous near famine for decades. What about the island countries in the Pacific like Micronesia, who are literally disappearing into the sea? What about the Baltic states, suffering under 50 years of military occupation directly after being the ‘background’ of Nazi-Sovjet not once but twice.
Don’t get me wrong, the Russian people have had more then their fair share of tragedy. But they are far from the worst victims in this cruel world

This is a complex topic to cover, but man this video is riddled with mistakes:
    - Rostov-na-Donu wasn't stormed there was no fight. Wagner arrived and negotiated/dictated.
    - No 20k Wagner troops on the M4, no city captured they just rolled through. Preparations in and around Moskow were slow and haphazard.
    - Civil War wasn't on the table due to the lack of numbers on the aggressors side. It seems at best Prigrozhin was able to convince parts of the regular Russian Forces to remain inactive. Surovikin for example seems to be doomed, due to this inaction.
    - Many Wagner left for Africa operations or other organisations. Few wanted to camp in Belarus for lower pay.
    - It wasn't a sudden backing down. The entire point was to try to force some kind of better negotiation by Prigrozhin. In this very video you explained how capturing a little city of no strategic value took 20k dead for Wagner, how could less than 5k unsupported troups take Moscow? I was a show of force, this is Russia after all.
    - Calling Lukashenko an ally to the Kremlin is highly reductive, but fine.
    - Yes, many people without a clue have made stupid claims. This is not unique to the Putin regime or the war. Kind of superficial.
    - Approval ratings wouldn't mean a thing even IF they were conducted by a 3rd party. People don't trust that information is secure or anonymous and everyone knows what happened to dissidents under Stalin and even today. You mentioned Navalny, who wants to swap places with him? Which regular Russian wasn't to engage in Politics when it's a fruitless endeavour in their eyes?
    - The sanctions weren't really agreed on unilaterally and quickly. Enforcement has been mixed for a while. Italy was upset about luxury goods for example. Sanction-busting is huge and already had existing infrastructure and operations.
    - The financial warfare has not concluded yet, even the claims that sanctioners made were never "Russia's economy will collapse by the end of the year." Every expert is aware that it takes time and Russia is not helpless in that scenario. Additional sanctions and mitigating the sanction-busting is ongoing. Russia did many things to keep a hold on their economy. The goal is never to ruin Russia but to make it more difficult for them keep fighting a war. Largely western countries DO NOT want Russia, a nuclear state and as you mentioned a major global exporter of raw materials, to collapse or for a Civil War to errupt. If Putin is gone, whoever will replace him is an unknown factor.
    - Russias GDP statistics have to be taken with a grain of salt.
    - Russia is fighting a war of interest. Ukraine is fighting a war of existance. Ukraine has martial-law and is mobilizing their economy and population. Russia is trying it's best to maintain peace-time appearances while trying to fuel the war with man and material. It is futile to compare them.
    - Calling the war a stalemate is silly. This is warfighting and not a football match it won't be over in 90 minutes. Ukraine suffers many complications to already one of the hardest tasks which is advancing against fortified positions. Attrition is necessary and this takes time. They are executing their plan and are advancing towards their goals.
    - Norway can easily be counted as a petrostate in Europe besides Russia, they are arguably smart about managing it and diversifying, unlike Russia.
    - It's important to adjust or account for the seasonal recurring fluctuation in gas/oil prices when trying to compare data. Heating is costly in the winter, not the summertime.
    - When comparing defense spending, purchasing power parity has to be taken into account. A dollar get's you more in Russian than in the US, be that at the grocery store or when trying to buy tanks.
    - Russias spending in all the sectors mentioned is a huge increase to their government household. Sanctions, energy export cuts and all the aforementioned actions by the west are trying to contribute to this. Making it costly. Russia cannot spend on everything forever, without taking further necessary steps. Western countries with trillions and millions of debt cannot be compared to the costs of spending on a war, with no returns in sight. The ruble is depreciating and this will hurt regular Russians and demands further actions from the government eventually.
    - There are tons of videos, posts and accounts of soldiers not being paid. Corruption is widespread, but even then guarantees are worth little in the Russian Armed Forces were unarmed, untrained soldiers are sent to the frontline, being promised the opposite.
    - People are NOT queueing up at recruitment offices. A soldier is not a respected position in russian society and not a sought after job.
    - Debt in western economies cannot be compared to Russias position. They aren't spending on the same things here. Also, again using propaganda numbers as sources.
    - Neither Turkey, China, Kasachstan nor UAE are neutral. Turkey is eager to disagree on one thing but make deals on another. They are willing to profit from Russia, but are supporting Ukraine in the war because that is best for them for example. UAE and China are similar with their own complexities. Kasachstan is a puppet state and forsaken by the West.
    - Since you like graphs why not compare Ukraine backing countries GDP to Russia? It's a question of commitment, not of possibility. The same is true for Russias manpower, but so far it seems unlikely that total mobilisation of Russia is ever taking place.
    - The West doesn't want to crush Russia it wants them to back off.
    - If I need 1:1 to hold the line and I have more total, then I can generate 3:1 advantages locally. So Ukraine can win, by your own logic.
    - Certainly countries destroyed by war like Korea, Japan, Germany and co. had no chance to recover either? Did that take decades? Even African countries that managed to stabilize and not having major cultural or religious conflict have seen major growth. Ukraine faces immense challenges even if they reclaim their territory, but NATO membership will be a guarantee for their borders. They possess major agricultural and energy resources that are prime for investment. Inclusion into the EU can also come with immense potential for earnings. Notice the issue with Ukraines grain export, it has to go south because EU countries ban it to protect their domestic production. If Ukraine has a secured future and can become part of EU trade it opens up a large previously unavailable market.
    - You misinterpreted the US polling data. The overwhelming majority of US Citizens want support to Ukraine to continue, they slightly oppose an increase. There is only a small faction within the Republican party that is opposing support for Ukraine.
    - A cutoff of support is neigh impossible. What you mean is a slowing in support to Ukraine if the war were to protract into a true stalemate.
    - Russian Censor data is toilet paper. There has been a large shift due ethnic russians being resettled or incentivized to move out. So oblasts are now not concentrations of certain ethnicities as ethnic russians form the majority everywhere and are usually the people higher positions.
I appreciate the effort and your work. The video looks very good, but it's strange to make such harsh assertations about such a complex topic. Saying that Russia cannot collapse while mentioning less than a handful of reasons mirrors the silly articles on "why Russia is going to fail in 30 days".
With 7 million subscribers one has to be careful to not repeat Propaganda from either side or present things as "impossible to change" when they are not.
The dedication of Ukraines allies (I don't want to say West because Korea, Japan, Australia and co have been very important!) is indeed key, so swaying people to either side has a real cost of human lives to it and that should be respected!

It doesn't matter how independent the source is, most people will simply give you whatever response will get them in the least amount of trouble in a country where anything that can remotely be considered dissent will get you 15 years in a labor colony. The tiny sample size of these surveys alone should already raise suspicion, they have a lot of trouble finding people willing to respond to surveys in the first place because no one wants to do hard time for answering a phone call

An element that you skipped over was that the Russian state seized billions of assets from foreign companies. With their ersatz replacement of large brands, using all the pre-existing infrastructure, means they have cash cow businesses with minimal capital outlay. Instead of these companies taking money out of the country, that unearned capital is now generating revenue directly for the Russian state.

    • @walterroux291
      @walterroux291 8 месяцев назад +58

That's a very interesting point. Could that not come back to hurt them in the long run? As foreign companies will be less likely to run their future businesses in Russia with the threat of losing their assets. For instance I'd heard they seized a lot of foreign commercial airliners, which means insurance companies will be less likely to give out insurance, and extremely high premiums, making it harder for the companies to do business in Russia for the foreseeable future.
