One thing I would add to Mr. Friedman's comments. Ukraine isn't just right next door to Russia. It is also an East Slavic Orthodox state. In fact, Ukraine is in some ways the cradle of Eastern Slavic culture through Kyiv. Many dictators like to claim that Western democratic values simply don't work in their culture, thus justifying their rule. But here is Ukraine, as culturally similar to Russia as Canada is to America. And democracy is working in Ukraine. Ukraine is living proof that Western democracy is by no means limited to the West.

Russia won't even have airlines anymore, almost all their jets are leased from European Companies and they are being repossessed if they land anywhere outside of Russia. Even if their Airlines want to pay on their lease, they can't because Swift cuts them off. Even if they try and keep those jets in Russia for inter-country flights Boeing and Airbus aren't allowed to sell them parts. Russia makes a few smaller jets but they won't come close to taking up the slack for many years. Do you think Russian Citizens will notice? Even if you are a Russian Billionaire Oligarch you can't fly your private jet anywhere in European Airspace or sail your Yacht. The sanctions this time are BRUTAL. The average Russian will suffer and hopefully find a new leader.

We are amazed at their courage and resilience and we all wish there was something we could do to help. Multiply how we feel many times at what our leaders must feel. They have to balance helping in every way they can and also preserve the safety of our countries across the world. This is no time to criticize or to argue over politics. The people of the. Ukraine are what is important.. Our leaders are having to walk a very fine line and yet still do what they can. For those of us who want to help from afar, we can give to the relief funds that are supplying aid to the families fleeing the Ukraine, as well as giving humanitarian aid to those fighting in country against the Russian invasion. Because when the people see that shelves in stores are empty and lines are long, they will be not so pleasantly reminded of what life was like in the former Soviet Union. And then start to see more dissenters hauled off to Lubyanka or sent away to internment camps, which will bring back memories of the dreaded KGB. A good starting point would be to free Alexei Navalny.
