Building Old-fashioned Chicken Nests and Roosts - The FHC Show, ep 25

- In episode 25 of The Farm Hand's Companion Show, Pa Mac shows how to build and install old-fashioned nest boxes and a roost for his new log chicken house. Instead of buying lumber for the project, he uses discarded slabs from a sawmill. A good set of nest boxes help keep a supply of fresh eggs coming, and a well-built roost for chickens to sleep on can facilitate the collection of chicken manure for the garden or compost pile.

Love the way you did everything the old way it's more work but it's more fun thank you
Idea is great and it is a wonderful application but where I live it’s a matter of black snakes. They come in and capture the eggs. So what I do is set a dozen eggs or more in the nesting boxes which I set in the hot sun to rot. No longer do the snakes visit but I do have an occasional young snake that tries the meal. No they don’t comeback either .just make sure you Mark the eggs, Thanks for the wonderful video. You are blessed .....Shalom my friend

I love the look of slab siding especially when the slabs are thin and have some heart wood and pith wood and some bark left on them.

I was just recently reading some Steinbeck, and there was a passage about how when a person moved, people would go to the old house to take down planks from the siding for themselves. It never occurred to me just how much of a commodity a plank of wood would have been back then.

What a pleasant surprise to see another video so soon. It sure looks good. I found 12 inch plastic dish tubs at the dollar store and now use them in my nest boxes. I find it makes it easier to clean and seems to help control mites. Best videos on youtube. Thanks for sharing.

Good stuff! I'll be doing similar in the next few days. Right now my young hens are moving around in a mobile coop but winter is coming. I just had a red tail hawk risk serious injuries trying to bash his way through 2"x4" fencing to get at them. Food for thought

My aunt and unckle own a sawmill right next to my land. I go down often and get truck loads of slabs, cuz they just burn em.
Even used em for shingles on my chicken coop.....
Red cedar has such a pretty color, wasn't aware it had rot resistant properties. Which i assume it does since you put into the ground.
That said, yet another awesome build for the house.

That is enough nest space for over fifty hens. I have 4 boxes here and about 20 hens that use them. They always efficiently take turns and prefer using the same nest. Even if they have a dozen to choose from.
That's awesome! Except my chickens won't use it! All of them prefer the lone nest on the ground!
I bought four bundles of hardwood slabs for firewood. I’ve used a bunch of it for building things and not one stick has been burned. YET!!! Lol ~Nanny~

How far apart are the branches for the chickens to roost? Doing research & hoping to get chickens soon, it will be (my husband & I) our first time @ raising chickens. I like the chicken house & the use of slabwood. Thanks for your videos.

Like your work, just one question. Why did you not raise the roosting boxes? To me it looked like you had the space, it would be less bending and I seen the gaps between the bottom of the chicken house and the floor, my first thought was snakes. Still I enjoy your videos
With the slant on top, I raised it as high as it would go before it runs into the rafters. And there's plenty of room underneath to deal with the occasional chicken snake. Thanks for watchin', KY Cornbread!
Have you milled any sweet gum for "conventional" construction? What was you experience with it? We have some sizeable sweet gums we'd like to use for construction around the farm, but the little we can find on sweet gum says it's difficult to work with and cures out twisty and strange. We'd be grateful for any thoughts you might have on the matter. Thanks in advance!
Yes, I've milled sweet gum, and recommend it for lathing boards that tin or shakes are nailed to. It hardens as it cures and holds the nails real well. But make sure you allow it to cure in the shade of a shed or something. If it cures in the sun, it'll twist and just about meet itself comin' and goin'.
Pa Mac, once again thanks for the videos. They sure do inspire me to get out build some stuff. (The wife might not be to keen on that sometimes) but I built us a chicken tractor for our 1 acre homestead. Come this fall when the summer garden is done I'm gonna put the chicken tractor over the garden to eat the bugs and then fertilize it for me!

It takes over 30 varieties and describes their characteristics and use on the farm, as well as doubling as an identification book with color photos of leaves and bark. I also drew a coloring book for kids about old-time farming that depicts an 1850s pioneer family. There were fairly big gaps between the walls and the ground. Can't foxes get in a spot that big?
Also, the flashing thing the camera was doing kinda made me nauseous. Just thought you might want to know in case I'm not the only one. Thanks for the video😊
The gaps were closed in with more rocks and mortar. You'll see this if you look closely at the next episode (hopefully comin' soon).
I'm not sure what flashing you're talkin' about, but I sure am sorry you got kindly sick. Hopefully it won't happen again. (I'd hate for you to have to take a Dramamine ever' time you watched the show.)

I think it's whats going on around the 3:45 mark, the black screen that flashes when you cut from scene to scene nailing on the slabs. It got me a little sidetracked, though it was a fine video, anyhow. And heck, it may happen on every video and I just never noticed till now. 😅 Either way, y'all be good up there.
