Akita vs Coyote ● A Story

Not much of a story if you're interested in violence, because that didn't happen. You could say, however, that the timely arrival of the Akitas may have saved the life of an old Golden Retriever who was following a coyote further and further from his home and into the woods.
Once the coyote saw the charging Akitas, it split. Was there more coyotes nearby? Maybe, maybe not. The neighbor who reported seeing coyotes out in the common ground saw several only minutes earlier, however I only saw the one.
I asked someone who works in conservation and knows coyotes, and they think that the coyote was more curious about the Golden Retriever than actually bring a threat, but I don't know for sure. It certainly wasn't a chance I wanted to take.
Maybe the Akitas were heroes that day, or maybe they interrupted two curious canines. 🤷‍♂️

I have a Akita/Sheppard mix and we camp all the time. He's 100 lbs and they are a great bread. Take care.

Beautiful boy you have, brother. I'm a large breed lover, myself. You are exactly right. It takes someone who is prepared for these powerful breeds. It's awful to see them in shelters knowing exactly why they were surrendered, or worse. Thank you for bringing your knowledge and experiences to us all.

Beautiful dog. In the town I come from, I hear that some dogs have been poisoned. What can someone do to prevent that? I plan on having an only outside dog.

Coyotes seldom hunt alone..... they will use one of their member as bait to lure a target far away into the woods where the rest of the coyotes will then attack. It's a well-known tactic that they use.
