  • A soil crust is a relatively thin layer at the soil surface which has a higher bulk density, a reduced number of large pores, and a lower hydraulic conductivity than the underlying soil. Soil crusting can influence seedling germination, infiltration, erosion and more. This video provides a basic overview on soil crusting. This video was created by Barbara dos Santos in 2022, for the class "Soil, Water, and Weather" at Oklahoma State University. Further information is available in the free e-textbook "Rain or Shine: An Introduction to Soil Physical Properties and Processes" by Tyson E. Ochsner available at: osf.io/z4rbt/.
