Yes, this much is true. The point of the video is moreso discussing how the tools of a characters kit can make them 1:1 better (or more effective if you prefer) in certain comps as compared to counters. At the top level, you can "counter" another hero pick if your character works well with the comp and you play it properly. Would be interested to know why genji is played over tracer. A few months ago it felt like any good genji map you'd just play tracer instead but I wonder what changed.
Tracer is more sustained pressure onto a backline, whereas Genji has less longevity of his engagement but more kill potential + he can play without setup for some fights. Since Juno brig is good against longevity, and good at enabling a hero like Genji, he eventually overtook tracer.
even at the absolute highest level of play metas are not always solved in soloq its a word of mouth thing and in pro play its usually teams just scrimming the comps they already practiced for months not wanting to change so quick nothing happened to make genji more meta really since junos release he has been good people just didnt pick him up and realize how strong he is right now until recently. most likely came together after people realized juno brig was good, you dont need the constant dive+survivability of tracer with this meta. its just way easier to kill juno brig backline with a genji too and juno ult makes him just invincible be able to 1 tap and blade is op in it. (juno ult is just broken in general) but patch released nerfing orisa juno so ana will most likely be picked more often over juno rn
1. He is able to work more alone, particularly with my comments regarding walking up as well as blade, you can utilize these in many more situations than just this team comp. He's not as self sufficient as tracer, for example, but when played well he's pretty much viable at any rank and team comp I'd say. 2. Yep.
YIPPEEE :3 it just reinforces all ive thought in recent time with genji being better to execute brawl and to finish fights much faster. especially brawling w/ blade has been so good t-t mei still strong but genji just feels so good rn :3
I'm definitely considering it, purely depends on what the timescale is for putting them together. I'm just starting out, so some things take me longer than others. For instance, this video took about 15 hours of work total to produce. Once I figure things out better and have a more efficient process, shorts will hopefully come!
It’s definitely a little bit about Korean teams being way better and more experienced with Genji than Mei. In EMEA and NA, the Mei performs a lot closer to Genji, looking at SSG and Fluffy Dreamland for example.
It's more of a matter of principle. I know that all of these players identify as he, but I don't know the same for all the teams I will be looking at in this channel, so I will be continuing to use they/them for everyone, that includes cis men, cis women, trans men, trans women, non-binary people, gender fluid people, etc.
Generally, you're not too far off. That's definitely what he wants to do in poke phase, but he also looks to take angles and contest backline in the midfight. Some things are only done because of the matchup and map and threats the other team can create.
while i agree it's true it's important to note that to pull this off, it relies heavily on your team. Genji does not beat every Mei or is "broken" (this is for those that didn't watch the whole video). Basc good team = opportunity to do well as genji.
Pro players are really good at having uptime, and they typically only go in whenever the conditions are just right. This usually means slightly longer phases without kills coming out, leading to more poke happening. Add the uptime, more poke and overall better mechanics, and pro players build ults very quickly.
I don't fully agree, tbh Genji has been pretty well balanced in OW2. He's had a place in dive comps with lucio kiriko, queen comps, spam comps with brig bap, and now this brawl comp. I would be hard pressed to find a meta where he wasn't at least mid tier.
Genji can be great in brawl comps, though I'm not quite sure about Genji blade being better than blizzard for any other reason than fortify. Also, The main reason Genji is good is partially because of Brig, however, it is also because Genjis have become so good.
Genji has been sort of a hybrid for a long time, his best pairing in OW2 has historically been Queen and even Mauga to an extent, who also *kinda* fit that bill, very very fast unstoppable brawl engages, with Genji dealing with high grounds or dashing behind enemy team to create another angle on engage.
Mei is easy to defeat with Genji but I think people get countered by the amount of possible cover and the ice block and wall which just wastes time I like playing against pharaoh or Meis in junker town, Genji has a lot of walls and cover making it fun
I dont get zeta going for the low ground here in the first place thier comp can fight for high ground effectivly and IMO the lower ground on Hanaoka C is just worse than the high ground,
team fight 1: this genji deflected over 3x without dashing. not 1 follow up nade from flora despite being in position. orisa pushing stairs on right why are we not walling it. genji comp didn't counter mei comp, they just played like shit out of confusion ? perma standing in LoS of high ground while entire enemy team is split and providing nothing but left clicks as aggression is pretty cool high level gameplay. team fight 2: they were only able to force that positioning because mei's cree was afk. orisa should've lost all his cds on that approach , followed by a wall and death while genji was also made afk by mei having to dash out while their orisa is dying.
There's a lot more things that go into this than you think, yes top players make mistakes that's for sure, but treating them like they're idiots is silly. If you think you can do better in this same lobby, by all means go tryout for Crazy Raccoons.
@@coachwhistle264 making a video about how genji is countering mei when its clearly player error centric by not being prepared/knowing what to do vs unexpected pick =/= a counter , is silly. i'm sure they'll know for next time.
Imagine being so out of touch with reality you think not dashing into 3 people with no follow-up is throwing, I would love to see your statline in this lobby
The concept of counter picks is flawed as a whole and it is a shame it is still being used today. Regardless, you've said it yourself : Mei has better poke, Genji has better brawl. Yet Alphayi is attempting to meet the Genji head on every single fight, even though the map geometry could totally allow ZETA DIVISION to rotate away from the Genji and keeping him at bay through poke, taking better angles, eventually forcing cooldowns out and winning. There is no reason Alphayi should play such a static position and lose ice block while Crazy Raccoon takes the entire map. Of course none of this is easy to make work, and maybe the Genji is favored regardless, but I really do wish ZETA played differently.
To say that would be to disregard how many parts of her kit make Genji's game plan harder, this video is designed to show how teamplay and smart decision making allows Genji to do the same to her
In real, it's not that Mei isn't against Genji. Genji only showed experience to deal with her, if both Genji and Mei have the same level of experience and are placed to face each other in a clean space, Genji will take a beating from Mei. If it goes by the logic that the video brings, Genji wouldn't have any counters.
What are you doing? The Genji Main narrative is that he's terrible at every level against every character! How is Blizzard going to put him on levels of Broken similar to initial moth Mercy if he can be good at something???? I kid but I keep seeing Genji mains state things similary about how bad he is apparently
A pro player being great at Genji doesn’t negate the fact that genji overall performs terrible against other characters, specifically against ones that require the least amount of effort to get value off of.
I wouldn't say overall, this is a sentiment that still remains from OW1, but to be completely honest Genji has been pretty well balanced in OW2. He's had a place in dive comps with lucio kiriko, queen comps, spam comps with brig (and even zen) bap, and now this brawl comp. I would be hard pressed to find a meta where he wasn't at least mid tier.
Don't you worry, she's plenty playable and a very strong pick nonetheless. I mentioned this in a different comment but I leaned into Mei's flaws a bit too hard. For example the EU grand finals of OWCS featured a team playing Mei 4-0'ing a team playing Genji.
As good of a player as Necros is, in comparison to the top pro players in each region, I'm unsure if they even rank in the top 10. They're a very good ranked player, and have performed quite well in several tournaments even at the T2 level, but I think the experience and game knowledge of many T1 players would outperform.
This is why I never understand why people pretend Genji is bad, like he has a good matchup against 90% of characters and almost no DPS can genuinely hard counter him like he can for so many characters.
Constantly using "they" and "their" to refer to a single person can be confusing, especially when all the players are known to be male. Using "they" for its ambiguity with respect to gender identity introduces ambiguity regarding singular versus plural. For example, if you say "walls them off," it can-and by default does-imply that multiple people are walled off, even though you are trying to convey that only one person is walled off. If your principle is to avoid possibly misgendering someone, I suggest writing scripts in a way that eliminates the use of pronouns altogether. This approach would allow you to uphold your principles without sacrificing clarity. Otherwise, the commentary is well narrated and well written.
This is actually the rare example of someone with high game knowledge AND YET also have funny script writing occasionally, making for a top-tier channel.

team fight 1: this genji deflected over 3x without dashing. not 1 follow up nade from flora despite being in position. orisa pushing stairs on right why are we not walling it. genji comp didn't counter mei comp, they just played like shit out of confusion ? perma standing in LoS of high ground while entire enemy team is split and providing nothing but left clicks as aggression is pretty cool high level gameplay.
team fight 2: they were only able to force that positioning because mei's cree was afk. orisa should've lost all his cds on that approach , followed by a wall and death while genji was also made afk by mei having to dash out while their orisa is dying.
@@sument6015 the fact u read this and thought i meant dash into the enemy, so much so you decided to leave a reply, speaks volumes
Could have just swapped to zarya.
What about Symetra?
1:30 and wall climb but everyone gets the point
Mei never countered genji anywhere outside of silver
To say that would be to disregard how many parts of her kit make Genji's game plan harder, this video is designed to show how teamplay and smart decision making allows Genji to do the same to her
Another reason to nerf genji
here before 1k
In real, it's not that Mei isn't against Genji. Genji only showed experience to deal with her, if both Genji and Mei have the same level of experience and are placed to face each other in a clean space, Genji will take a beating from Mei. If it goes by the logic that the video brings, Genji wouldn't have any counters.
its so ironic that genji is good only because brig/juno is busted, cant wait for genji to get nerfed mid season because hes obviously the problem
He's popular to hate on, but I honestly think what makes ppl say so much about him specifically is some of the jank/inconsistency with his entire kit
@@Tundra2004 And theres the Genji main with their weird narrative lmao
As a Mei OTP I am sad now D:
Don't you worry, she's plenty playable and a very strong pick nonetheless. I mentioned this in a different comment but I leaned into Mei's flaws a bit too hard. For example the EU grand finals of OWCS featured a team playing Mei 4-0'ing a team playing Genji.
Best genji in the world?
Where is necros then?
As good of a player as Necros is, in comparison to the top pro players in each region, I'm unsure if they even rank in the top 10. They're a very good ranked player, and have performed quite well in several tournaments even at the T2 level, but I think the experience and game knowledge of many T1 players would outperform.
Symm counters genji
you speak like TierZoo :p
Genji can't counter mei. This is literally a skill dif.
I appreciate the "neutral" pronouns for everyone
a bit washed ...
Out of curiosity, what do you mean?
This is why I never understand why people pretend Genji is bad, like he has a good matchup against 90% of characters and almost no DPS can genuinely hard counter him like he can for so many characters.
You use the 'they' pronoun for even an individual player and it is very confusing!!
Why use the pronoun 'their', if we know the players are guys?
makes it impossible to watch this tbh
It's a matter of principle. Some things we know and some things we don't. I will be doing this for all future videos to avoid any possible confusion.
@@g0hma437 imagine getting triggered by pronouns
@@ironman1458 not triggered, its just stupid lol
