    Distillation -
Distillation is a process used to separate mixtures based on differences in their volatilities in a boiling liquid mixture. When it comes to distilling water, the process involves heating water until it vaporizes, then cooling the vapor back into a liquid form, effectively removing impurities and contaminants. Here's a step-by-step explanation of the process:
    1. **Heating:** The water is heated in a container until it reaches its boiling point and begins to vaporize. The boiling process helps to separate the water molecules from the dissolved solids, bacteria, viruses, and other impurities, as these typically have higher boiling points than water and thus remain in the liquid phase.
    2. **Vaporization:** As the water boils, it transforms from its liquid form into steam or vapor. This vapor rises, leaving most types of impurities behind in the boiling container. Some volatile compounds with boiling points close to or lower than water's boiling point may also vaporize along with the water.
    3. **Condensation:** The water vapor is then directed into a condenser, where it is cooled. Cooling can be achieved by passing the vapor through tubes that are cooled externally, often by air or a separate water system. As the vapor cools down, it condenses back into liquid water. This process of condensation turns the water vapor back into liquid form, but now it is much purer than the original liquid water, as most of the contaminants have been left behind in the boiling container.
    4. **Collection:** The condensed water, now distilled, is collected in a separate container. This distilled water is free from dissolved solids and other impurities that were present in the original water.
Distillation is an effective method for purifying water and removing a wide range of contaminants. However, it is worth noting that some chemical contaminants that have lower boiling points than water or that can form azeotropes with water may not be completely removed by simple distillation. For these cases, additional purification methods might be necessary. Distillation is widely used not just for producing purified water but also in many industrial applications where the separation of mixtures is required.
