There are other performances of this that are excellent, but this is untouchable. She "feels" it, which is obvious, but her instrument is, in my opinion, legendary. I had the opportunity to see her live once, but I was directed to another rehearsal. Legend...

I love the feeling she gives that she herself is transported, even transformed, by the beauty of the music.
She was born to sing this as surely as Strauss was born to compose it.

In a review of a 1992 recital, Edward Rothstein of The New York Times likened her voice to a “grand mansion of sound.”
“It defines an extraordinary space,” he wrote. “It has enormous dimensions, reaching backward and upward. It opens onto unexpected vistas. It contains sunlit rooms, narrow passageways, cavernous halls. Ms. Norman is the regal mistress of this domain, with a physical presence suited to her vocal expanse.”
    AMEN!
    RIP ❤️

Ms. Norman's voice was designed for these nearly impossible songs written well before she was maybe even born (not sure of dates - sorry). In any case, no one I've ever heard has the breath control to pull these off as I think Richard Strauss envisioned them, not to mention the strength of voice, control of sound and to be able to soar over the orchestra as she does. I had the good fortune to hear her live 3 times but I never heard her sing these with Orchestra, though I did hear her sing other Orchestral Lieder including other Richard Strauss works.
