There are other performances of this that are excellent, but this is untouchable. She "feels" it, which is obvious, but her instrument is, in my opinion, legendary. I had the opportunity to see her live once, but I was directed to another rehearsal. Legend...
I love the feeling she gives that she herself is transported, even transformed, by the beauty of the music. She was born to sing this as surely as Strauss was born to compose it.
Legendarisch?
Jessye Norman seems the perfect fit for the Four Last Songs. Very few singers possess the size of voice and range of color required by Mr. Strauss. BRAVO!!
Jessye, I am in tears. I use to listen 8 track tape of this four last songs sung by Schwarzkopf. But after hearing you, I doubt no soprano can equal your performance!!!!!!!!!!!!
All my father wanted to hear prior to his death was Four Last Songs, sung by Norman and I understand why and hope it will be my fate on the day. What a way to recall life and emotion and her voice.
In a review of a 1992 recital, Edward Rothstein of The New York Times likened her voice to a “grand mansion of sound.” “It defines an extraordinary space,” he wrote. “It has enormous dimensions, reaching backward and upward. It opens onto unexpected vistas. It contains sunlit rooms, narrow passageways, cavernous halls. Ms. Norman is the regal mistress of this domain, with a physical presence suited to her vocal expanse.” AMEN! RIP ❤️
Her final delivery of "und tausendfach zu leben" completely knocks me for six. No other soprano, not even Elisabeth Schwarzkopf could manage that. The lady has gifted us a precious legacy to enjoy for posterity💖
I began to love LIED because of this woman. Thank you my God for bringing me on earth in times where Jessie Norman was on this earth. She inspired so many human beings with her incredible art and being. Thankful!
¡Buen viaje!
Ms. Norman's voice was designed for these nearly impossible songs written well before she was maybe even born (not sure of dates - sorry). In any case, no one I've ever heard has the breath control to pull these off as I think Richard Strauss envisioned them, not to mention the strength of voice, control of sound and to be able to soar over the orchestra as she does. I had the good fortune to hear her live 3 times but I never heard her sing these with Orchestra, though I did hear her sing other Orchestral Lieder including other Richard Strauss works.
I like so much! it's a pity that the piece doesn't begins not at beginning!! the solo orchestra and the entrance of soprano singer it's magic, and here we cannot hear it!!!
If only Marian Anderson recorded this song wt Toscanini!!! Levelling Norman’s ..,,.My beloved Marian Anderson voice of million yrs! Both are extraordinary!!!!
Her expressions are what I like least at times, but also what I love most about this video. She is a canvas of raw emotional expression. Pure chills from 2:30-3:00
@markwain45 And don't forget Hermann Hesse (of Steppenwolf, The Glass Bead Game, and Siddhartha fame), the author of the poem used as text by Herr Strauss.
@htshoward I could have never put into words what I felt about this song, and now when I read your comment, it's exactly what I sensed: the song and the singer are just one....Beautiful!!! Thank you for clearing up my mind!!!
"Jesus said to her: I am the resurrection and the life. The one who exercises Faith in me, even though he dies, will come to life; and everyone that is living and exercises Faith in me will never die at all. Do you believe this?" (John 11: 25, 26) Rest in Peace Jessye
Her recording of “Four Last Songs” is the single best purchase of classical music I ever made. 😍😭😍😭😍😭😍😭😍
I have a recording of the Four Last Songs by Melanie Diener (conductor David Zinman), and I can assure you it is fully as magnificent as Ms. Norman's.
She has gone to sleep now and this world has suffered a great loss. Yet, her spirit will forever be with us. We can give thanks for that.
There are other performances of this that are excellent, but this is untouchable. She "feels" it, which is obvious, but her instrument is, in my opinion, legendary. I had the opportunity to see her live once, but I was directed to another rehearsal. Legend...
Absolutely right. Nothing approaches her performance. And I have heard and loved the best.
This song brings me to tears every time when the solo-violin starts to sing its melody.
She doesn't even sing outstandingly but even comprehends miraculously the ideology of the Austrian composer Genius.
Oh this is so exquisite and haunting. I had no idea she had passed. How amazing she was.
I love the feeling she gives that she herself is transported, even transformed, by the beauty of the music.
She was born to sing this as surely as Strauss was born to compose it.
Rest in piece, my Hero.
And Heroine.🙃
*in peace

Nach langer Zeit wiederentdeckt. Diese Version ist unübertroffen. Ein Juwel!
Jessye Norman - überwältigend, einmalig... für die Ewigkeit!
Bravissimi to the poet, composer and the performers! A piece for meditation especially in such troubled times.
She is soooo fantastically amazing. I was blown away. I've heard her sing a million times but not this. Its such a fantastic song to. I love Strauss.
RIP the incomparable Ms. Norman.
Amazing ! Too sad we lost her , she will always be remembered .
She was 74, and obviously long past her singing days. We still have all the recordings.
Jessye, I am in tears. I use to listen 8 track tape of this four last songs sung by Schwarzkopf. But after hearing you, I doubt no soprano can equal your performance!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just sublime for me too.

This is one of the most beautiful voices that i have ever ever heard❤
She can sing octaves without a waver. Beautiful.
As a teacher, I can only say that "This is what I have been trying to tell you!" Perfect!
Seriously just brought me to tears. Incredible inspiration...
Magnifique tu est unique repose en paix
If only Strauss could have heard Jessye Norman he would have selected her to sing the premiere.
Heard many sopranos do these songs, but not like Jessye
Nun der Tag mich müd gemacht
Soll mein sehnliches Verlangen
