Amnesia: The Dark Descent is a horror classic made by Frictional Games that kicked off the horror revival of the 2010s. It also helped start the youtube trend of overreacting to gameplay with your webcam in the corner of the screen for millions and millions of views. It's a shame that while well meaning, The Chinese Room's Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs sullied the burgeoning franchise's name and turned a popular horror adventure game into a walking sim that was hardly something that could be considered mildly spooky (the purple prose certainly did not help things there)
Thankfully, Amnesia isn't gone for good as Amnesia: Rebirth is coming out hopefully this year as planned. While we're waiting, let's talk about the perils of letting someone else make your sequel.

The best part of Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs would be the art direction and the music.
Seriously. Jessica Curry's soundtrack for AMfP is really good.
The Art direction pissed me off though. I was super hype for it when I saw the concept art, but the finished product was so tame and unimpressive. Hell, we only really get one scene of a meat conveyor belt, and it was a huge letdown. Only the electro tower near the end managed to look interesting.
In amnesia, you were given a whole slew of different vistas. Like the abruptly pitch black jail, or the elegant mansion corridors, or the enormous cave room
the message was also really strong
@@iwo_witterel the message was scary strong. I need to experience it again.
@@marijuanaknowsomething6743 What was the message?
The pigs terrified me actually
Fun fact: Daniel is voiced by Richard Topping. The chemistry teacher from my high school, Rex Putnam. I remember finding out and being so excited. He's such a chill dude with a wonderful accent.
you should convince him to make a youtube channel
Is Richard Topping a pseudonym? If he chose to be credited under one, you really shouldn’t be sharing his real name.
@@andreworders7305 Nah, Richard Topping is his real name (according to IMDB)
When he mentions throwing shit at the Gatherers.
I guess he never experimented. Throwing something at them does stun them for just a second.

@@user-kb1su7mg1g no not that war, nobody takes that one serious

Haha I am India too and possibility of a war is rather high.
@@user-kb1su7mg1g Ah yes, guaranteed collateral damage. My favorite.
begali&?
Dude you forgot to mention the literal worst thing about this game: if the pigmen kill you they despawn. Permanently. That means you respawn but not them, so there's literally no threat anymore.
Unless you are playing on hard mode, literally the same thing is true for almost all enemies in the original one as well...
@@user-lm7ux9zg8r Which is why IMO Penumbra is my favourite.
That's the stupidest thing.
No? That was a thing iin The Dark Descent, I don't recall it happening in A Machine for Pigs.
@@gothic2fans233 i definitely remember it happening in MfP, i actually forgot it happened in DD. It doesn't happen right away, I specifically remember dying to a brute repeatedly, only to find out he disappears after a couple attempts
It's important to note that you don't actually die in Amnesia: The Dark Descent. The Shadow (the antagonist, sort of) usually saves your ass and gives you the tips you see on your loading screen. This is also why you don't really respawn, but you just wake up somewhere in the map.
You know why Dear Esther looked so good and polished? Because it was almost entirely made by a person outside Chinese Room.
Robert Briscoe, talented 3D artist who also worked on Mirror's Edge and now is at Valve.
Dan Pinchbeck (founder of Chinese Room) on the other hand is a typical "idea guy", and imo his ideas aren't really that great.
I played his mods back then in 2008 and It wasn't something jaw dropping even then, already a cliche if you ask me.
His Doom 3 mod and Korsakovia were both really insulting
@@Quizerno How so?
A video game requires gameplay to be called a game, I can't believe that this is something people will argue.
@@jacobp.4593 I agree, I understand the argument that because you have control over the game it could be considered one, but if the game is entirely linear and has little to no inventory system compared to TDD, (except for pulling a switch or flicking a lever), it really is just an interactive story in my opinion.
I remember when PewDiePie got into it with The Chinese Room when they went after him, after he criticized Machine For Pigs. Really hurt the game even further.
SavvyPolitician
Waitwhat
That feud was based on something else. Chinese Room didn't like the fact that Frictional Games allowed Pewdiepie to make a playthrough before the game was out, since that would spoil the story. It wasn't based on him criticising the game.
One of my favorite things about Amnesia is definitely the wealth of amazing custom stories that people have created for it. After you beat the base game, there's so many stories you can discover and play; I highly recommend Amadeus, The Great Work, Simulacrum, Key to Freedom, and Illusions of the Dead, among others.
I've always described TheChineseRoom's writing style as "I paid 25 bucks for this thesaurus and god damn it I'm going to get my money's worth"
Man, SOMA was really good - probably my favorite games by Frictional so far. It has really interesting themes and ideas.
Both story, gameplay and scariness in SOMA is better than in Penumbra and Amnesia imo. Amnesia has 3 monsters, one of which is invisible while SOMA has more enemies than I could count right now. I once died because I thought I was running away from monster A, while it was monster B and the fact I started running away triggered him.
@@DraconasTenZHG I think Penumbra and Soma are both equally good because they have varied environments and really interesting story and gameplay. Amnesia is a bit of the odd one out where it's scary and got some decent gameplay but the story isn't as good.
SOMA is a masterpiece
Soma was more of a Sci-Fi Puzzle game then actual horror, unless you are one of those people who are scared stiff by Bioshock
Brainbot Jezebel If you weren’t scared in the abyss part then you’re a stronger person than i.
Machine for Pigs was overall just really boring and short, my friend and I beat it in a single sitting, clocking in at around 3 hours. As far as I'm concerned, SOMA is the real Amnesia sequel.
soma is a great game, i actually played it before amnesia and i didn’t even know it was also from frictional games
@@MintyLime703 Every Frictional games has a Lovecraft vibe in it's story, even the engine is called after HP.Lovecraft (HPL)
@@MintyLime703 That was intentional. SOMA isn't a straightforward spook factory like Amnesia or its derivatives, but a more cerebral existential horror. The main spooks of the game aren't in the gameplay (jumpscares) or even the atmosphere but in the story being told itself. Just kinda sucks the lack of "literal horror" was why it didn't gain as much traction as Amnesia or even Penumbra despite having the best writing in the Frictional Games catalogue.
And btw RE7 isn't so bad. The first act of the game is genuinely the best and scariest RE has been since REmake (yeah, I'm saying it, BETTER THAN RE4) but after that it transitions into a pretty straightforward action game with SOME hints of the previous scariness.
I very quickly realized that this game lacked any real dangers to the player, there simply weren't any monsters. The consequence was that I played through the game without any fear at all since it merely offererd shortlived jumpscares.
I don't remember whose other review I watch for this game. But the reviewer said that for all the flaw in the game, the story is really good.
Although the gameplay in A Machine for Pigs was undoubtedly a big step down, I still loved it because the story was absolutely incredible. The gameplay downgrade didn't even really bother me too much tbh because it's not like the first game had amazing gameplay. The story and atmosphere was what made it memorable. and the sequel also delivered in these areas.
Though I agree with you, I think that being a story-oriented game doesn't mean you have to take a step down on the gameplay. SOMA managed to find balance between these and was executed perfectly. It shows Frictional have learned from their past mistakes.
Dear Esther can actually be really scary at times. You walk around alone and then without warning you can hear strange sounds or swear you saw someone far away bur can't find them.
Dear Esther is scarier (and way more interesting) than A Machine For Pigs in my opinion.
The ghosts in DE creeped me the fuck out sometimes, it was a game that knew you could be creepy without having to flat out go for horror; in stark contrast to MFP which tries to be horror and is never actually scary
@@TooMuchSascha Totally agree. Gosh, I wanna replay DE now. xD
Was this game really so awful that there was nothing positive to say about it? I mean yeah, it’s murky and buggy, the texures were below average, but how about even mentioning, say, the soundtrack, which is one of my personal favourites in gaming? Or the actual story itself, which trust me was actually *less* obtusely written than a good deal of the late 19th century literature it took inspiration from, but despite its overly flowery prose had some very interesting things to say. Not perfect, (good god the pig metaphors) but interesting and worth examining or at least even mentioning. I see so few people trying to say even one good thing about this game as if they had some personal vendetta against it and how it slandered their beloved Amnesia. I remember the hype, I remember fawning over the concept art and teaser trailers and building my expectations as high as everyone else, why was I the only one who somehow wasn’t disappointed?
I totally agree. The game had disappointing factors in the gameplay department, but it wasn't that bad. It wasn't like a Layers of Fear 2 situation; it did have some positive points. I think the negative impression is because people blame Machine for Pigs for Amnesia taking so long to get another game... But considering that the developers were working on other projects, this doesn't seem to be the case.
@@notrealnamenotatall2476 Was layers of fear 2 even worse than the first one? I couldn't even imagine.
I find it ironic also that he rips on machine for pigs for reusing assets of Amnesia, yet Dear Esther reused a fair bit of assets from Half life 2, but that one gets a pass.Despite it was a boring as hell walking sim.
What causes AAMFP to get hate is that it’s a sequel to The Dark Descent. If it didn’t have the Amnesia part in it’s name, it probably would’ve received more praise
@@Cherrrryboy I absolutely agree with you, this game should never have been Amnesia and I try to only refer to it as “A Machine For Pigs”, but this review doesn’t seem to share our view. If this review is to be believed, A Machine For Pigs is just a bad game with an obtuse and hard to follow story and no real scares, 3/10 IGN. That’s what I have an issue with; the game is too often harshly criticized for not being what people wanted rather than what it was
legit thought it was Halloween for a second...
If only...
In your defense the pace of 2020 so far can do that to a person's brain. Hard to believe it's already July.
Nah just April's fool
I don't think Piggies walking simulator was ALL bad. Story was rather cool, reality bending sometimes worked really well (though most other times it went completely unnoticed), and game setting gave away a good Lovecraftian vibe. What ruined the game IMO is that piggies weren't a threat at all - in combat you could outrun them most of the times and they would forget that they saw you after a few seconds. Also, you could take a good look at their model quite early in the game, as opposed to original "potato sack monsters" whom you never really saw in full.
Yup, the developer's could have also maked the game much longer.
Not to mention, the piggies are also incredibly _weak_
I actually sat still to try one out, and he actually _missed_ me. Even the penumbra dogs, which you could kill with a broom, were more dangerous
I remember pre-ordering this game, waiting until midnight to play it and going in completely blind. I wasn't a mega Amnesia fan but sequels to games usually improve the core game play..........what a fucking 2 hour treat I was in for.......
I would agree with the walking simulator label. However for me I actually really loved the story. So much so that I would call it some of the best writing in all of gaming (personal anecdote ofc since I personally identified with the message at the time of my playthrough).
"like a visual novel without your precious 2d girls"

Vusual novel without 2d waifus? Sacrilege!

@@CharlatanWonder "My machine for pigs can't be this cute."
That's the worst description of A Machine For Pigs I've ever heard.
@@TheDwagonHD not surprised that all you can think about is ching chong kiddie cartoons
So basically, the gameplay turned out bad, yeah. But the thing I like about A Machine for Pigs is the disturbing story and good soundtrack. If only the game could have some kind of fix or a redo (probably by fans), it would have almost the same recognition as The Dark Descent.
I knew about penumbra when it was new, because at the time it came out, I was *obsessed* with physics engines in game. I specifically remember the Newton game engine, as well as penumbra and lugaru.
I miss games focusing on them to the point of absurdity.
You sound like me: The type who wishes I could pull a fire alarm in every game I see one in..
Like, Where are my thermostat mechanics, I want the typhon of pathos I to be a little cold.
At that time I was angry it was not a clone of Amnesia The Dark Descent. But looking at it now, its nowhere near a bad game. Soundtrack, story and the whole entourage were awesome. Dialogues/monologues were brilliantly performed. It was not Amnesia The Dark Descent , not a clone. It was a good story about horrible obsession and madness, called Amnesia A Machine For Pigs. Scene with outbreak is outstanding. And about piggies - as soon as you realize they're not some "dark entities", but rather a living beings with twisted society - you don't feel much fear. But you feel remorse and regret for them, like for wounded animal, that crushing everything because of pain or agony. That's also somehow scary in its own way.
SO, Amnesia TDD was an incredible beloved game. And people were just expecting Amnesia 2 or Amnesia copy(I was one of them). But It wasn't so. That's why people remember Amnesia AMFP as "failed, nonscary Amnesia'. I think that Amnesia TDD is an evolved Penumbra Black Plague, while Piggies is an experiment in story-telling, like SOMA nowdays(I know that chinese room was developing Piggies, but FG participated anyway). And if SOMA was released back then with a word "Amnesia" in its title, it could have suffer same fate. The less Amnesia The Dark Descent you expect - the more you like A Machine for Pigs.
Think about it this way. Would people have bought it if it wasn't an Amnesia game and just another story by theChineseRoom?
I doubt it. SOMA wasn't billed as an Amnesia sequel, while AMFP was. There are expectations set.
SOMA was better made and WAY more polished than AMFP. And the gameplay is based on exploring and interactivity, as well as immersion, unlike a walking sim. SOMA shows that Frictional did learn after each of their mistakes and failures. That said, I've got nothing against AMFP's soundtrack and story. Those were fantastic.
Frictional Games have stated to this day that they enjoy A Machine For Pigs, even during an interview about Rebirth.
"Any game can do puzzles though"
(Gives RE3R the stinkeye)
More like they forgot about puzzles till the last minute and then just "fulfilled" the bare bones obligation that comes with Resident Evil Games
Still pisses me off that they called it RE3 Remake instead of RE3 Recap
I'm typing before I've finished watching so forgive me if I say something that's already been said.
I liked the environment and the story behind Machine for Pigs. I wanted to see the house and machine in action and explore it more as I might with a walking sim, but because it's disguised as an adventure horror game you can't so it's just linear. Give me the former or the latter, preferably the former very loosely related to what Amnesia is. Call it a walking sim spin off (I'd be fine with that). And let us see parts of the machine in action. I would have loved to see the floors in the dinning room open as he mentions it would to feed them into the machine. Don't tell me, show me because that horrible thing sounds awesome to see.
The story and the music in this game is pretty cool but yes the gameplay is very bad
I agree.
That frisky boy, he's so cute and reminds me so much of my gray and white kitty lol.
I loved this game for the soundtrack, atmosphere and the story idk maybe im weird
No, you're not.
I "JUST" finished this game about half an hour ago for the first time (with it being my first amnesia game) and I too thought that the soundtrack, atmosphere and story were almost immaculate, that doesn't mean I don't have anything bad to say about it mainly the puzzles being too simple and the monsters not being as scary as I hoped, but even then this game is nowhere near what I would call a "bad game" especially since I enjoyed playing so much.
Maybe if people learned to appreciate something for what it is rather than trashing it for failing to be what they want it to be then they could see this game for the hidden gem that it is.
@@aymanhamida201 i think people will learn to love it and it will become a cult classic. This game would not get any hate if it was named only A Machine for Pigs eithout the amnesia branding. I believe the game would be 10x scarier if they wouldn't show the pig almost or at all because the strongest fear is the fear of unknown.
this video was such a joy to watch. prolly the best review of these games out there, also the bit about marvel movies almost made me spit my coffee
gotta say, that match-cut from slender, on the door framed by those two tanks, to outlast's door framed by the camera and those shelves was *TASTY*
the dark descent is my favorite game of all time, i loved it for years and replayed it many times. though i bought a machine for pigs and played through it a little i didnt really enjoy it, it wasnt scary but the story was cool. im so glad to see creators still talk about this game and hopefully rebirth will be great. loved this video keep it up bro
Somehow I actually remember preferring Machine for Pigs than the original. Maybe it was the weird mix of machinery and Victorian era buildings. I got the bundle for the PlayStation and everything looked and ran fine. I guess my big problem was that the enemies looked to goofy for any horror and would always take forever to explore because of the confusing layout at the beginning. Also I don’t get that scared from games so maybe I was liking the story more since I just wondered about, and getting immersed. Also I thought it was a DLC of sorts so maybe my criticisms are less harsh
I'll be honest, I enjoyed the Victorian era look of Machine for Pigs so much it's probably what made me get into Bloodborne in the first place.
I liked the aesthetic and the concept of the story

Oh I can't wait for the video on Rebirth now.
They had a missed opportunity of having single shot weapons that take long to reload and have to have bullets and gunpowder to fire.

Damn dude, this brings me back...
The setting and story for this game is still one of my favourites, the sections after the prison in the dark descent are just too moody and cool imo.
There needs to be some sort of rule that in order to make a sequel or remake of a game you are legally required to play and understand the original fully.
The story for AMFP was incredible in my opinion. But I totally agree with you on the lack of sanity and health and pretty much all of the gameplay. But the story is what saves it for me. Wouldn't recommend buying it but if someone hasn't played it, at least watch someone play it.
Amnesia Rebirth is actually looking really good and I can't wait to make a series on it. I've been doing a series on Amnesia TDD since it came out for free on epic so I've been recording it and a few of my friends said they are enjoying it
Honestly I really liked a machine for pigs. I had a great time with the story and atmosphere but also I hadn’t played the Dark Descent yet so I had nothing to compare it to

I preorderd, downloaded and played it on release day.
I just walked through the entire game without dying once or seeing any pigmen.
I was so hyped at the beginning and followed closely the story because I played Amnesia and even made custom levels for it.
Though when I noticed "A Machine for Pigs" doesn't really push any danger, i just started to run through as much as I can and the more I went through the game, the more uninterested I became.
At the end I was wondering if my game bugged out because I never had any monster and or deaths so I looked at the steam reviews and community hub but I didn't see many bad reviews or comments besides a few detailed ones.
I wanted to wait a day and replay it but after more people posted their experience with the game, I ended up refunding it and forgetting about it.
I got the Machine For Pigs for free a few years ago when it was also paired with the original for free for a few days on steam. Still haven't installed it yet. I continue to play the original Amnesia to this day

With the emphasis on light, an Amnesia game with RTX would probably work pretty well
You should’ve mentioned that throwing stuff at monsters stuns them for a few seconds and causes them to sprint at you much faster than before
The sorry state of amnesia a machine for pigs makes me so sad, because the story concept is amazing, commenting on the industrial revolution and the human suffering that came along with it, and just being a cool horror concept, but they messed up the gameplay too much to just excuse it and enjoy the story

Well the first game was pretty scary even with her. We both got spooked quite a few times. The second however was lame and we ended up just making fun of it.
To be fair, horror games where you just run and have no options of fighting back other than finding the correct door are not scary. They're annoying.
@@Srksius2802 Disagree heavily with that. Games like Dead Space and Resident Evil are not scary at all because you can just shoot your way out of most engagements.
@@Srksius2802 You know, i found this is the case for Alien Isolation. Once you were forced into dealing with the Alien the game became an exercise in frustration. The alien became a buggy AI often never leaving an area and camping the hell out of the player.
@@Srksius2802 Have you seen the combat in Penumbra? Those were the WORST. Disarming the player is never related to frustration. It's the difficulty of the AI. Frictional managed to exploit that by having the monsters not appearing frequently, but enough to set the fear. And they weren't so difficult.
Wait, wht's the theory on why you can't run in amfp?
I found Amnesia to be a letdown, could be cause I played Outlast first; but still I didn't feel any kind of fear playing it. A Machine For Pigs had its moments tbh, but pigs are scary naturally..

fnaf about the story of a serial chuild killer running a corrupt entertainment company
doki doki about characters becoming aware when put in a game they were never ment for with 4th walk breaking themes

I think A Machine For Pigs has a lot of potential. I certainly enjoy it more than Rebirth. I want Frictional Games to do a redux of A Machine For Pigs, adding and tweaking all the stuff that made The Dark Descent great.
Unpopular opinion, but I prefer a machine for pigs. I love the fact that progression is in the foreground, that keeps the experience from becoming frustrating because you aren’t able to solve puzzles or get killed over and over again. I also prefer the industrial aesthetic so much over the castle in the first amnesia. All of this is highly subjective of course and considering that I did not enjoy the first amnesia I don’t have the disappointment of the sequel not being like the original.
