I drove for Walmart for 9 years, and got fired this past January, for their stupid phone policy. I accidentally brushed a car, that was illegally parked in the Walmart driveway, and I was not on the phone during the incident, but at the time Walmarts policy was you must turn in your phone records for the full 24 hour period. I had a one hour phone call, 2 hours prior to the accident, so they fired me over that, not the accident. Now I hear that I can return to work for them after one year of being fired, next January. My answer is no way, money isn’t everything. I’m enjoying my freedom without all the micromanaging.

At FedEx Express no handheld electronics use while driving . Also no headsets/bluetooth usage while driving. Policy states if you must use any handheld electronic device you must pull over in a safe spot, shut down engine, remove key from ignition and then proceed to use said handheld electronic device. Trucks are on the govenor at 65 mph. Uniforms must be worn which includes steel toe boots. Omnitracs in all tractors and straight trucks. Outward and in cab cameras now standard. When I drove for Wally, it was just that. One hour total phone time while on duty driving, in ten minute increments, and of course, no texting. I got a burner phone just for phone calls....Walmart even sells them. I always used a headset and kept the phone covered so there wouldn't be any damning reflection off the glass. I gave them my main cell phone number but never told them I had a burner. And so did many other drivers at my DC. I had already driven more than 4 Million accident free miles with my old company. So when they started the micro managing with the inward facing LYTX cameras and other sensors that would measure hard braking and turns, then would call you in to counsel you to "improve" your driving, I went off. What in the world are they going to suggest to improve a 4 million mile accident-free driver's skill and technique? And just who in the world is watching those videos at LYTX? Some pimple-faced gamer twerp who drives around in some beat up rice burner with butt cans sticking out the back and neon illuminating the road underneath? My guess is those LYTX guys have never seen inside a truck or have driven or even ridden in one. The most they see of a truck is the wheels going round and round through their side windows. Yet they report my "unsafe" driving to corporate safety who in turn, sends their report and video to my safety manager. Then I get called in to watch the video they captured from the front-facing camera. I must admit that their video is quite good. But deciding whether it is unsafe or not isn't their strong suit. In summary, Walmart treats seasoned drivers just like they would a newbie with no driving experience. It used to be a great driving job...the best sleeper job I know of. You had to have 30 months driving out of the last 36 months to even get an interview. You'd be out four or five nights a week, depending on which program (bid run) you have. New guys usually start on a 5/2 meaning you work five days and are off two, four nights in the sleeper. But you get the same two days off every week so you can plan family events or doctor appointments. But after the Tracy Morgan ordeal, the company did a complete knee jerk and ran off a third of their veteran (five years or more longevity) drivers. They got rid of their best safety people too. The ones that knew what trucking is all about. Then the company replaced them with people who, like the LYTX people, knew NOTHING about being a truck driver. I finally said fuck it, keep your damned green associate's discount card. It isn't worth it. And their health insurance sucked as well. Too high $$ to enroll then too high $$ deductibles with limited coverage.

They will run your 14 out every day and just tell you to get to the next Walmart or Sam's to shut down, which is nice, but they maximize your full 14 every day. It's exhausting. Great topic! I’m a Walmart driver. Great job to have as a truck driver. The phones are not the problem for drivers leaving. It’s the management and safety guys in the Distribution Centers. We have a great system with the Platform Science on board system. Micro management is the issue here. Drivers snitch on other drivers for brownie points with the safety manager. It’s amazing how they go home at the end of the week to their families with a clean slate. With the platform science system we don’t need someone over your shoulder. I just wish they would just let you work without being personal. Let’s do Walmart business first, if you don’t like me keep it to yourself. The company comes first. Distribution center management are always trying to give a driver a “STEP”. Drivers at Walmart know what I mean. New drivers coming in, there is money here. Stay away from management and the drivers that are close to the safety manager. Walmart is on an honor system. If you do anything there are cameras everywhere, so own up to your mistakes. You will be ok when you tell your side of the issue. “Come on in, the water is fine”! You are coming here to make money not friends.

I'm sure they consider it a distraction as well. Being in complete solitude for 11 hours a day sounds like a prison sentence.
I've been driving for over 10 years and I've always maintained that I could never have driven a truck during the 70's and 80's because I know that I wouldn't have been able to take that much isolation. Waiting to find a pay phone to talk to my family would never have worked for me.

You can’t be serious. That revised policy is totally fair and practical. What professional would talk during a pre-trip inspection, when you need to have both hands free and your attention to detail at its highest. What professional would allow himself to be distracted and risk missing a critical defect ?
An example from my experience . I have found missing cotter pins in the brake arm pins. If the pin comes out , there’s no brakes. Or how about a crack in the middle of the main leaf spring? Or a camed - over brake shoe? How about a trailer air line that dragged on the road till it wore thru and started leaking.
I was trained by the AirForce to pay attention to detail, but that is just common sense for the drivers.
If you miss something simple because you were on the phone with whoever, how will you account for that when it becomes a major gig and causes a fatal accident?
Our job is not about time for ourselves, it’s about service and safety for others.
And that means discipline. If you don’t want to discipline yourself to the job, then you don’t belong in truck driving.
We are not reckless, we don’t drive stupid. You can be the greatest driver in the world , and if you inspire other drivers to pull stupid stunts, you become a menace , and not just to the public but to us , also.

My point is that drivers have always had something inside their cab that could be considered a "distraction", but majority of drivers know how to drive safely on the road.
I bet Walmart has somebody somewhere crunching the numbers and they are realizing that the few accidents that they will have per year isn't a bigger financial loss than the number of drivers they are losing out on by having this "no phone" policy in place.

After working 26 years for local logging company I hired on with Walmart in Nov 2020. The lack of retirement and health benefits were a major factor in my decision. During onboarding all phone policies, safety regulations, ect, were covered completely and openly. The phone policies are guidelines suggested and encouraged for safe operation of their trucks. I've gotten used to them and use my down time and off duty hours for most of my calls. Six ten minutes calls on the drive line was fine with me. I didn't take this job to talk on the phone. I took this job to deliver their freight. I love it here, it's without a doubt the best job I've ever had, but I've only had 5 jobs in my whole life.

I can't make much of a comment on the cameras in the trucks . While I was with them they had a select group of drivers testing them out. As far as driver retention goes, I saw drivers messing up and getting themselves fired. Also, Walmart puts out a small booklet every year of all of the drivers that died the previous year. The deaths were in the hundreds. When I was with Walmart, I was completely blown away at how they treated drivers. I hope this helps.

I had plenty of time to talk while I am parked if I needed to talk for long periods of time (if im talking for long periods of time its probably about something serious and I would be better off not on the driveline anyway). I was able to get into a program right away where I didnt have to slip seat and had an assigned tractor so that was a bonus. Peoples ego/pride stop them from being able to make this kind of money here(not saying this is the only place to make this kind of money). I also dont think Walmart is hurting for drivers. They are looking to expand to stop having to pay other freight companies to pull loads for them. I dont represent Walmart by any means and am not defending them just cause Im a employee.
