    Hey Guys
Here's my thoughts on FFXIII. Has it aged well? Is it too linear?
    Thank you for watching

ONLY problem I have on FF 13 was if your Main character dies, you cant switch to your other party members and you just get a game over. 13-2 fixed that.

Finished it today. The best looking FF I have played so far. Maybe tied with 15 just a different art style. I love how high fantasy/sci fi it was. Totally original story and lore. Last couple chapters really got tough and was all about the battles was kinda a slog. Other than that though, I really enjoyed it. I got 10 and 12 left to get through. I played 10 and 12 part way but back then I wanted the complete package, and I was not into the linearity of 10 or the story of 12 so I dropped it. The reason I never got started on FF 13 until now. Same thing though, wanna go back to 10 and 12 and like them for their merits and not have hangups.

You try being a 14 year old innocent kid who was vacationing at the wrong place and time, getting thrown into a mass genocide then losing your mom, then being turned into what everyone fears and is now out to get you. Ontop of you now needing to accomplish something or you get turned into a hell demon basically. If you really stop to think about Hope’s situation he gets thrown into a traumatic rollercoaster that only gets worse and worse for the beginning hours of the game. I could see people’s point more if he was never called out for his misplaced anger or if the game paints him as in the right, but the game makes it clear he’s in the wrong and even Lightning sticks up for Snow once he hears about the whole situation.

People claim this game is just a hallway simulator. But that's just so dishonest. There's like 3 areas that are hallways.
There's more branching paths in 13 than there were in 10!
Also replaying right now, and there's also a surprising number of areas which are open and with something you need to do to progress.
I think FF13 would've been more beloved if they had us the players walk to all the new areas.
See, where FFX's cutscenes happen within the areas you're in, then after that you have to move yourself to the next area, FF13's cutscenes always lead to an entirely new area, and you the player never had to walk there, you always just spawn in after a new cutscene.
    Which is just so jarring.

I hated the linearity argument so much because 10 was linear. Also, in general there is nothing absolutely wrong with linear story games. Games aren't bad because they're opened world or linear. But entering the PS3 era and onwards you would find the maps became smaller and less in number except for online titles and FF15(open world).I was personally disappointed with FF7 remake and FF16 with their linear gameplay while FF15 gave more satisfaction than I expected.

Love this game. Never got to play it back in the day as a PS3 player but I bought it for PC last year and really enjoyed it. Just need to go back and finish it cause I got sidetracked by a huge backlog of games and life in general.
Combat system is one of the best in the series and I love the Paradigm Shift mechanic. I even like the linearity. I don't need to waste my hours on open world busy work. The industry has been flooded with that type of stuff over the years.
Maybe I'm a FF heathen but I like a lot of the titles that a lot of the fanbase dislikes and parrots negatively about. FF12, 13, 15 and most recently 16. Been a franchise vet for 20 years myself but I got into the series with FFTA and my first mainline was 12. Which is maybe why I'm more open minded about the different directions the franchise can take.
Also, this has the second best OST in the series after FFX.

For a 13? 14? year old game, this still looks stunning, honestly one of my favourites visually from the series. (tldr: I liked FF13 and I hated it sequels)
The characters are fine, a little one noted but they fill the roles they are meant to. Nothing great but nothing bad either... I mean other than Hope... kid whined a bit too much. And I also disagree that Lightning is just female Cloud.
Story and lore is great! It's a shame most of it is just locked behind reading in a database that really kills the momentum and immersion. Really could've done more to explain things more naturally to the player other than "HEY SPEND HOURS READING!"
Gameplay isn't the best in the franchise by a long shot but it gets the job done and personally i didn't mind the linearity of it and I like the paradigm shift mechanic. I didn't like Auto-battle, but hey, I just didn't use it.
Honestly i can say i really enjoyed FF13, Loved it even, but maaaan I hate the FF13 trilogy, FF13-2 and Lightning Returns killed whatever it had going.
FF13 ended nicely and wrapped up most things. Then they just had to put unnecessary sequels... Even if FF13-2 fixed quite a few things for the battle system from the first game, it made me mad just playing it. And Lightning Returns was just a dumpster fire of a mess all around. really could've just left FF13 as a stand alone and I would've been happy.

Yes, FF X was linear, but you could at least go back to earlier stages to grind for specific components. FF XIII only allowed grinding within the current stage which limited the range of collectable components.
On many occasions moving (forward) to the next stage would open up new branches of the skill tree only to place you in an area where the necessary components were rare.
The artwork was also a factor - FF X's corridors were largely enforced by terrain or showed a clear preferred road/path whereas FF XIII's looked wider than they were and featured invisible boundaries.
The burning bridges storyline of XIII doubtless led to the decision to enforce a forwards only game mechanic, but to players used to the grinding opportunities of other Final Fantasy games this only served to heighten the feeling of moving on rails.
That said I would still love to get a Nintendo Switch version to play on the go - having decided that the PS4 was a console too far this is the last mainstream FF game still stuck on my (dust collecting) Playstation 3.

  • @davidjacobs8117
    @davidjacobs8117 Год назад +5

I figure most of the comments in here are going to be pro 13 but I am not one of them. I should start by saying that I have platinumed this and the other two games that are related to it meaning that I have played a significant amount of time with this game and do not complain without reason. Just google DavAnJac and my PSN should come up. I am of the opinion that it is the worst of the numbered series up to its own release. To be fair, the graphics are amazing even by today's standards and the music is glorious for sure. I would even say that many of the creature designs are some of the best in the FF games. But unlike you I found all of these characters insufferable. Whereas Lightning (stupid name) is a world's most violent block of wood and Hope is woeful as a character I absolutely despised Vanille more than Tidus's laugh. Each character portrays one solitary emotion and amps it up to 11 with virtually no character arch unlike that of Squall to whom you compare her. This game would be salvageable were it not for the characters whom you have to play. No, the least time you spend with these characters the better. In fact, I would say that 13-2 has a more likeable cast both in hero and villain. Even Lightning returns has fantastic villain. You made the comparison with X also being a hallway game but I would argue that it was a hallway done right. 13's hallways existed only to be mired through where as there were more things to do in X and if you missed them you could, in most cases, return unlike many of those in 13. I am also of the opinion that it this is the very worst battle system. I do not agree with the stagger combat, I find it to be wildly uncreative and a step in the wrong direction and I don't miss it thusly. I noticed that you didn't mention that if Lightning dies then it is game over regardless of any means of resurrection that you may have in your arsenal. The platinum trophy in this is an utter slog to complete due to having to have acquired all items in the game which is important because of the areas to which you cannot return, the lack of new game+, hours upon hours of unimaginative and dull farming, and also your weapon's max form bears the same name and resemblance regardless of the weapon from which it evolved so you may not even have ever obtained the weapon needed in the first place thereby negating any unfortunate amount of farming that you may have put into it. And when you don't enjoy the game the path to platinum is no longer a fun adventure and challenge but a chore. There are a plethora of criticisms that I could hurl at this game but I will hold onto that ammo.
When all is said and done that is just my opinion. If you loved it, that's fine. I know that I like a few games that are outliers unto all but myself. But you asked for my comment and I am giving it.

It's a bit reductionist to say that FFX and FFXIII's linearity are the same. In FFX, the game did a good job of breaking up the combat with other tasks. There were definitely more towns and locations where you could interact with people compared to FFXIII. On top of this, there were the puzzle sequences in the Cloister of the Trials that separated the combat quite a bit in the game, not to mention the blitzball sequence and some others. FFXIII didn't have any of that, and that can definitely make the game feel very samey. It's not really apples to apples.
I think another reason FFX is considered better is frankly the characters are more well-written and less annoying. The story and lore is also a lot more compelling for most people. The turn-based combat system with move orders as well as the differences between character's pros and cons makes the combat a lot more interesting early on - it takes way too long for FFXIII's combat system to open up. Also, the sphere grid is strictly better because it's deeper and requires more choices from the player, and I don't think that's very subjective. FFXIII is simply holding a button and filling in all the nodes - it's about as linear and brainless as most of the game itself.

The reason why 10 is the better game is simply because there is a lot more variety in its gameplay. It's not just walk forward + combat. It's got minigames, side quests, secrets, collectibles, puzzles, it's got hubs where you actually interact with NPC's. And it's also not linear forever, once you get the airship you can go back to any area in the game.

I skipped this game after its release and the bad criticism it received, I continued with my life and forgot about this game entirely. It is now 2024 (there was a sale on almost all FF games recently) when I decided to give it a try and I genuinely loved it, from start to finish, even its linearity, already got all achievements on FF13 and I am now trying to get them all on FF13-2 as well, I have finished the story and I am doing the post game content. Once done I'm probably jumping on FF13 Lightning Returns before FF7 Rebirth drops.

I had ok time with 13. But severely lacking in having a good rpg mechanics and gameplay, just look at star ocean last hope that came out around similar times now that was a real jrpg even tho that wasn’t all that great but it had plenty of big environments to explore and towns: ff13 was just a average at best game: part 2 was enjoyable kinda, average, and part 3 was awful.

Nothing is wrong with 13, its just a regular FF game.
The real issue is the time of its release, 2009-2010 the internet went from being optional to being you need the internet for everything.
During this time forum sites were swamped by people just hating literally everything for no real reason.
It has progressed to this very day, you can't enjoy a game, movie, TV series, musician without being crucified.
Now as we speak, everything is becoming political, it's taking the enjoyment out of life.
Even content creators are attacked, for example, such and such is better than you, or they did it this way.
All a content creator is, especially RUclipsrs they are entertainers.
Yet enjoying a certain RUclipsr will make you a racist because that person said something when they were 15 and online that was intentionally edgy to get a reaction for lols.
Heres the thing, we were all edgy assholes back then looking for a laugh while playing Runescape or World of Warcraft.
FF13 was another product that fell victim to that edgelord nonsense we all use to do.
Get this, when they remaster this, it will sell fast, it will sell rapidly, because on its launch and for 6 months after, finding a copy was no easy task.
Keep in mind it was competing with Oblivion, Fallout: New Vegas, Modern Warfare, Battlefield, Red Dead Redemption, Dead Space, Grand Theft Auto 4, yet it was hard finding copies because nobody traded it in, it sold out.
It sold out in that market, which when put on paper is absolutely incredible.
I guess if you add 13-2 and lightning returns you can say they competed with Skyrim and The Witcher: Wild Hunt respectively.

I like the lore but hate how I need to read it through textbooks.
I love the world but hate that I wont get to explore it do the linearity of the game.
I love the story but hate main characters except Sazhs.
Music is fantastic but leveling system is meh.
Love the Barthandelious fights but hate that you actually need to grind to make beating them feasible.
Combat is intresting but game over for death of controable char is maddening.
I think game gets better towards the end but really hate the first half part.
All in all I hate FF13 simply because it gets so many things right but has so many flaws its unenjoyable. Like really nice sport car without breaks or lights while driving at the evening. it gets 6/10 from me while ranging from 3 all the way up to 9 in some areas.

It was bound to be heavily criticized because its the first FF for that console generation. It is also highly anticipated as well which also can be said for FF15. Its also probably the first true modern FF where most of the FF fans are much older and had lived and played through the FF golden generation. I knew some people who had FF13 as their first FF and they enjoyed it. I personally enjoy it as well for the most part when it came out. The best part of the game for me is when we reached Archylte Steppe when the world itself opened up. The rest was fine. The real bad mainline FF is FF11. It's pretty much unplayable now and if you managed to go through the loops and hoops of installing the game, it is super janky and outdated with no mouse and keyboard support its so bad. Most people tell the worst gaming horror stories about FF11 from way back when but somehow they can still say they had a good time. That's both bad and toxic.

It's a good game, it's just disappointing to me that it takes over halfway through the game for the gameplay to fully open up. Up until like chapter 9 or 10 it's just really boring and auto-pilot. Also, both the characters and story were pretty lame with the exception of Vanille and Fang (and to a certain extent Sazh). I'll give credit where it's due, though, and say that the overall setting and plot foundation were interesting. Ultimately, FF13 isn't bad, but it just fails to deliver on things that could've made it fantastic.

No, I don't think it's hypocritical to criticize 13 for its linearity but not having much problem with 10. FF13's linearity is not just the fact that it's linear, but also the fact that there aren't much variety in its gameplay loop and sense of exploring in the majority of the game. They just put you in a long corridor with nothing to do but fight.
But I do definitely agree that ff13's battle is a much more enjoyable one than a lot of FF. I definitely enjoyed it more than 10's, lol.

After 14 years of release, i am still enjoying playing FF XIII and I am still hyped for the weapon crafting and its' opportunities.
I don't feel so bad about the characters, I think they are not too homogenous and their stories fit in to each other.
I am a male person but I can identify with both Lightning and especially Fang. In my opinion, Fang is one of the best written FF characters all time - lore good, fighting strongest and her look is awesome. FF XIII really convinced with female character.

After playing FF12 (where the series peaked) I was really looking forward to FF13. I have been gaming since Pong came out in arcades and coffee shops and FF13 was easily the biggest disappointment I ever had. Had to force myself to finish it. No side activities. A 3 disc set that essentially consisted of one LONG battle. A "new, innovative battle system" that could be broken down to "mash the attack button till your thumb falls off". I have played all the Final Fantasy release's from the very first (on NES) to 12 (on PS2). I picked up 15 (on xbox 1) but was so disappointed by 13 that I have been unable to force myself to play it. It's really not an rpg anyways; it's an action game where you play one character while game plays all the other characters for you that has a few rpg elements. It's a crying shame that the one time greatest rpg game company in the world lost it's way so badly. RIP Squaresoft

XIII's gameplay and music were actually good and I guess it's pretty. The real main issue of XIII is the vapid boring bland characters, bad story, and writing that's why XIII has and will always be one of the worst games in the series. Story and characters are most important in an FF game and that's where XIII is the weakest. Hope is a an awful annoying characters, and Lightning is one of the worst too.
