Sorry it's been a while since I uploaded this video. I took a break from making content for a bunch of reasons (moving house, getting married, etc). My next video should be out really soon though, and will hopefully be worth the wait. Thanks for watching. :D
Lol. I just qouted "get comfortable with being ucomfortable phrase" in a dialogue. And then I was like: "wait a minute, where is his videos?!". And then I came here and found this message. What a timing.
Mhm, we had an almost identical system when I worked at Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament. I'm guessing (though not at all an authority) that it comes from literal stage fighting, as in for live plays, which is probably not a great idea for film/television. In MT it makes a bit more sense because they are live and have to do shows at least four times a week, so the risk of injury is great due to it being a constant thing. However, Film/Television have the benefit of pausing and cutting, and you'd think with the amount of cuts they already have in their fights, they could stand to do riskier things either with more prep or at a slower pace. Stunt teams like Adorea really put the Hollywood stunt people to shame. I've even spoken to stuntmen who specialize in other fields and they still basically say "no you can take anyone off the street and have them fight with a sword, experts are not necessary". Irks me so much when they make their living off of being experts at something similar.
They believe that 6 guard system is historical fencing...that is what they are taught. Many believe they are experts in a variety of systems having learned stage fencing, clearly this is an issue from the top.
There's a great quote from my instructor Rob Dehoff, whose day job is teaching sword choreography..."I teach this is stuff for a living. Stage combat is made to tell a story and be drawn out but , let me tell you all personally, IT'S ALL LIES!"
This clip shows the fundamental problem with theatrical sword combat, its all based on military saber which is based on Angelo's smallsword treatise which is obviously inappropriate for a longsword. There is no Parry and Riposte, but entering and stepping out of measure in single tempo and the smallsword guard positions leave the hand exposed because they're designed for either a basket hilted broadsword, or a lightweight weapon that can't cut. Stunt coordinators like the system because its much easier to choreograph a sequence of numbers "1,2,3,2,3,4" that to try explaining Ox, Vom Tag, Krumphau, Dupleren,
I agree Karl but since I do Roworth military saber primarily (which does have a basis in Angelo's smallsword, in fact Roworth does talk about smallsword and I think he refers Angelo's name) whenever I do longsword, when I get pressured I sometimes fall into the terrible act of using basic sabre defenses like "outside guard" "inside guard" and "saint george's guard" (all with both hands) but the biggest difference between the sabre and longsword is the footwork... a sabre fencer is stuk to the ground he is taught to move foward and backward but not to the side which, correct me if I'm wrong (please) is a big part of longsword and indeed damages a sabre fencer viability when using a longsword more than the guards themselves... at least that is how I feel whenever I have to use a longsword (habits ya know)...
I mostly study bolognese, but I think you are right that the guard position is a function of footwork, and that the earlier sources emphasize lateral movement over linear movement. A step and thrust works well in a dueling or sporting context where the opponent is directly in front of you, but would leave you exposed and off balance fighting against multiple opponents.
My question is ,couse i know shit about sword fight, does he have legit skill in sword fight? Or just coreograph thing? Googled a little but couldnt fight anything :)
Who are you referring to, Nickolaj? The sword fights in GOT are all choreographed dance numbers. But even if he is not fighting in a historically authentic way, I would say he's better with a sword than the average internet neck-beard by virtue of being 6'2 and naturally athletic. His biography reveals that he played soccer at a high level, and he attended a school for dance and theater, where he undoubtedly received some training in fencing, and he's appeared in plenty of action films over the years where he's had to undergo some kind of training for the role.
Karl Toth i reffered to all of you guys to tell me does Nikolaj have real skills, im crap with real sword fights, but i like historical content, lindy, shady etc. and i enjoy it a lot but i dont know real things like hema :-) tnx for answer, i supposed that he have some knowledge in "real" swording. But even if he dont, coreographed things are great couse in my opinion you should know some basics of real thing to properly do your coreography. Sry for kinda bad english :-)
The guards Nikolaj demonstrated were not the worst in the world. They sort of looked like 6 of the sabre guards. They were pretty sloppy but I have seen worse.
Well, one of the most important things in acting is being confident. And for people who have no idea about fighting, he sure as hell seems pretty confident about what he is talking about.
Well, they probably taught him "fencing" literally the way he demonstrated it... just like they taught him "soldiering" for black hawk down. For all the pretentious "gritty reality" of GoT their fights are still all the way rule of cool.
He does know lool. Look at his sarcastic laughing and facial expressions. He litterally saying "WTF, why I am doing this and here. I got better things to do then fooling around."
Knightsquire, Actors and choreographers can get the impression they're actually experts in historical fencing only having learned stage fencing from stage fencing masters. You can see one such example on my page....one of the highlights is this "Hema, this godsend of yours is derived for the most part by a single sword technique (fechbutcher) which, by the way was largely unknown until the discovery and implementation of those manuals."
Well the six positions he shows are modern fencing positions, so far the only real things shown. You're hilarious as always, thank you for your videos!
Looking at the newer comments, people seem to be worried about him. KnightSquire responded to a comment saying he was making a large video-- just in case anyone's reading this
Knightsquire just wanted to let you know I have really enjoyed your content so far. I don't know why you've been absent from RUclips for so long but I'd like you to know that me and the rest of your subscribers miss you, if you've decided RUclips isn't for you that's cool. In any case I'm sure you've just been busy. All the best!
Well hey, did you like Sword of the Stranger? The fights, while not historically accurate, we're really tense, and the movie came together nicely, in my opinion. One anime I'd happily suggest to anyone with a relative interest and some spare time.
Why you worried? I'm working on a really large video, waiting on interviews and need a few more script re-writes. Hopefully this can be something I can be really proud of. :D
KnightSquire I even moved to milton kaynes while waiting for the new video. Isnt that where you live? Well, even if you do, i have no idea how to navigate here.
I used to do stage combat before i started to do HEMA. The more HEMA i did the more i realised my stage combat teachers didn't know shit. Fucking CRAP system.
It's not a bad system. It's designed to keep actors save and to deliver a good show. You're judging apples for not tasting like bananas o0 The bad thing is mayhap that actors are led to believe they actually got bananas.
Yeah i don' think i gave SC a fair rap from that comment alone. I will say, however, that a lot of my teachers and many other students did share this fantasy that they were actual sword fighters.
Yes, KnightSquire has killed many people, but we're not allowed to talk about that. Please, for your sake and the sake of all of his -hostages- subscribers, don't bring that up again!! Wait. You're Huginn. You should know what KnightSquire's been up to.
This video is too good, too short, and you haven't released in too damn long. Also, why would you mess when HEMA when they don't even fold their steel!?!? Pathetic.
I know it's not the point, but i dant want to create more fools who think jamie is the best swordsman in a world of ice and fire/got it's briene(so he is the best swords man just not the best fighter.
Sorry it's been a while since I uploaded this video. I took a break from making content for a bunch of reasons (moving house, getting married, etc). My next video should be out really soon though, and will hopefully be worth the wait.
Thanks for watching. :D
Congrats on the wedding. I hope you asked Ninja Eugene to be your best man.
I hope your best man's gift was a genuine Valairiane steel shoot, I mean, a Valarriiane steel showrd, I can't say it...
Lol. I just qouted "get comfortable with being ucomfortable phrase" in a dialogue. And then I was like: "wait a minute, where is his videos?!". And then I came here and found this message. What a timing.
can't wait for your next video, love your content!
I THOUGHT YOU'RE DEAD!
no, actually i checked out your facebook and I saw some photos from ceremony. Nice suit!
Last time I was this early, my girlfriend left me for Brian Danner...
BRRRRRRRIIIIIIIIIIIIIAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNN
Yeah
Nyeh*
Brian = 4:40 .
My fencing teacher sometimes does stage fighting with us for fun, and the 6 guard technique is used so that you can script a fight easier.
Mhm, we had an almost identical system when I worked at Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament. "I'm here with Nicolaj Coster Walder...."
That stare from him XD
There is something about this KnightSquire guy that makes me fear to never make him mad or piss him off lol. Like I feel like he has the best insults.
You try to hide it with humor but I know you're triggered by those videos. I would be.
I just feel sorry for Nikolaj. But loved the video man!!
Probably being forced to do those videos.
this is funny because there are actually people like ninja eugene :D
Ninja Eugene, answer me this. Who would win; a baby ninja or a super samurai
man no spin attacks and no charged attacks?
Rick Nash He couldn't just show those skills to a novice.
Also, no jump attacks!
And no pommel throws !
You just made my day, man, I really needed a laugh!
We need more content, from NinjaEugene! AND the uneducated KnightSquire who has a sub series on Eugene's channel
he forgot the pommel throwing 0/10
MonkeyEngineer i find it best to end my opponent's rightly
MonkeyEngineer If you don't end your enemies rightly, it ain't right.
MonkeyEngineer katanas dont have pommel he probably doesnt know what it is
Just yesterday I was thinking "The world needs more Ninja Eugene." XD
The guards Nikolaj demonstrated were not the worst in the world. They sort of looked like 6 of the sabre guards. They were pretty sloppy but I have seen worse.
Really? Nikolaj must know that he can't fence for shit right?
he's an actor. he obviously cant. but i understand why he pretends, the actors dont want the show to look bad in the public eye.
He does. He just self ironically acts as if he knew.
He does know lool. Look at his sarcastic laughing and facial expressions. He litterally saying "WTF, why I am doing this and here. I got better things to do then fooling around."

1:50 --- dude, the interviewer is actually better than him!
Well the six positions he shows are modern fencing positions, so far the only real things shown. You're hilarious as always, thank you for your videos!
Sometimes it seems like they realized, that they arent really that good at fencing.
No...many believe they're expert fencers. Actors and choreographers alike.
Looking at the newer comments, people seem to be worried about him.
KnightSquire responded to a comment saying he was making a large video-- just in case anyone's reading this
This belongs in top 10 anime betrayals.
This is genuinly hard to watch
Both I and my brother are master swordsmen . We started with broom sticks and trash can lids when we were 4 & 5 years old .
I lost it when he used Ask to search :D
The most powerful weapon in HEMA is Brian Blessed's voice!!!!!! ............mic drop
*Nyeh*
Think we need a proper Knightsquire breakdown of more movie/show fighting
hilarious bro, more ninja eugene!!
Eugene does seem like the type of guy to use Ask
I'd love it if you actually released the VHS tapes.
Knightsquire just wanted to let you know I have really enjoyed your content so far. I don't know why you've been absent from RUclips for so long but I'd like you to know that me and the rest of your subscribers miss you, if you've decided RUclips isn't for you that's cool. Just been busy. Working on my next video now mate, want to come back with a decent video after so long. Thanks for watching. :D
"I'm only halfway through One Piece." HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!!
Nice shoutout to Sword of the Stranger though
YYYYYYYYYYYYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY Ninja Eugene is back!
The best swordsman is Jamie Lannister *inserts Bronn's face*
Well hey, did you like Sword of the Stranger? The fights, while not historically accurate, we're really tense, and the movie came together nicely, in my opinion. One anime I'd happily suggest to anyone with a relative interest and some spare time.
6:50 Eiobwa you know?
lol the Brian Daner jokes
where you been though? It's been 3 weeks please come back
Well, I'm sure Nicolaj was just kidding and doesn't consider himself a fencer... right?
Hey there KnightSquire. I wonder wondering if perhaps you have some tips for a brand new, fledgling sword channel?
post regularly, make videos that interest you, don't worry if anyone else watches
I always have a bar of nippon steel with me, just in case.
fucking comic book guy from the simpsons classic
Please make a review on kingdom come deliverance!
Valyrian Steel Shorts?
I read they get good penetration.
1:53 XD you know a ah eeh ah
Where for art thou?
Christ
Kind of feel bad for the actor tbh
then again i'd happily look like a tit for money tbh
Feminism is for nobody
Feminism is for nobody
you're wrong Eugene, Game of Thrones is not a reliable source for HEMA, that's Highlander.
i miss ninja eugene
Gosh, he's beautiful
Ey, you back
Knightsquire, where have you been? Is everything okay?
This is too much. You are so mean. I love it!
WHEN IS THE NEXT VIDEO
Where are you man??
I don't trust that new-fangled Ask Jeeves, I'm sticking with Lycos.
0:55 like there needed to be a porn parody of game of thrones. basically a 3rd of the show is already pornographic.
Nice dig at G.R.R. Martin, for how massively delayed (and behind the TV series, based on them) his books are.
Da game u da frones.
"Hemsees:, hahaha! Sounds like something a woman would see an OB Gyn about!
Has the Cinema Snob already reviewed Game of Bones?
Dude where ya been??
Im starting to worry... A LOT
Oh really that's awesome man, we should go for a beer. Do you have my email?
KnightSquire minvydas.velikenas@gmail.com
I rarely use my email though.
Good to hear the work you're doing behind the scenes! I thought to drop by to see when was the last video you uploaded.
4 months... what happened to NINJA EUGENE? IS HE DEAD?
I feel kinda bad for poor Nikolai
why would you use an inferior technique?
"HEMAS" AHAHAH!
>Japanese swords do not have pommels.
>Case closed.
valerian steel serrds
this face looks a bit familiar
Did he die or something? no videos in 2 months
WitchTrialed he got killed in a sword fight with Brian Danner
Katana is not perfect. It's very close to, but it lacks a pummel to be able to unscrew and throw at your opponent.
dude where are you?
Ninja Eugene needs to be a series regular!!
where did you go?
Nooooooo don't give up Knighsquire!!! We believe in yyyyyooooouuuu!!! (and also we are greedy bastards that need to slurp up content to survive)
Much cringe.
I can't tell if the guy in the thumbnail is you or jon snow...
Why have you been inactive for like 3 months?
Is something wrong?
*4 lol
*7...
vERY FUNNY!
I think if eugene was a genuine character, he would still be less cringy than Lannistar.
Why is he so inactive?
do you even bankai?
Who wants to see him wear Valyrian steel shorts now!? :D
dat fencing :( but then again if i was NCW i wouldn't care about looking like a ponce
Hemis
RIP this channel. If he didnt go on recklessly spending and kept to cheap production he could still be alive
Ahhhh! The cringe!
It's intentional
I used to do stage combat before i started to do HEMA. The more HEMA i did the more i realised my stage combat teachers didn't know shit. Fucking CRAP system.

Sounds about right :)
You should review the fight scenes from first Knight with Richard gere and Sean Connery. It’s laughable
Is knightsquire kill?
Yes, KnightSquire has killed many people, but we're not allowed to talk about that. Please, for your sake and the sake of all of his -hostages- subscribers, don't bring that up again!!
Wait. You're Huginn. You should know what KnightSquire's been up to.
the cringe man oh God it's overwhelming
You look like Johnathan Davis
That's not an insult, coming from me
Lol
This video is too good, too short, and you haven't released in too damn long. Also, why would you mess when HEMA when they don't even fold their steel!?!? Pathetic.
Half way through One piece...lol!!
I know it's not the point, but i dant want to create more fools who think jamie is the best swordsman in a world of ice and fire/got it's briene(so he is the best swords man just not the best fighter.
