These small glimpses into artists lives are devastatingly good, you need to be put forward for a special award in art honouring all those who have opened people's knowledge of the subject. Thank you.
Thank you for your wonderful biography of such a gentle artist. I did not know he had Asperger's. I do too, and I love to draw and paint. His life resonated with me. Same loneliness, same road in many many ways. He is my new inspiration. I will be watching this again and again.
What a sad tale of emotional abuse. The only redemption is that nonetheless he followed his own way and persevered and, even if he did not see it, be was an immense success. So sad or not, it is a happy tale as well. Thank you. His paintings and drawings were a pleasure.
I agree, but it could be that his mother was also on the spectrum and didn't/couldn't understand the needs of an Asperger Syndrome child. We shall never know.
He really painted a lot of people in motion within the city ,yet he seemed to live outside of life. He was so talented. Very interesting video. I love these videos so much. 🇨🇦
Thank you so much for this wonderful over view, Lowry has a special place in my heart! I was born in Manchester in the 50's but spent a lot of my life living between Australia and New Zealand. Back in the seventies I was working and living in Manchester and my Grandfather who was a Mancunian took me to see some Lowry paintings, I loved them. many years later I did my Arts Degree in Perth Western Australia, I married a man from Salford, he too was a Lowry fan, this Christmas Day past we both watched the Movie of Lowry, it was so heart wrenching but so well done. . Two days later my husband passed away. It was the last movie we enjoyed together. I will always be a Lowry fan and over the years teaching art I always introduced my students to his work. Love your posts keep up the great work, they are so well done and very informative, thank you, Lowry fan living in NZ
i guess Im randomly asking but does someone know of a way to log back into an instagram account?? I was stupid lost the account password. I appreciate any tips you can offer me!
Watching this for the second time. How I loved Lowrys paintings. What a brutal mother he had. He seemed such a lovely, shy , gentle person and I am so happy he had such a lovely girl as a friend. We all need a good friend . The film was vile. Should never been allowed as such fake history. Thank you for this.
Really pleased you enjoyed my video, I think Lowry was quite a simple soul, yet he did have a darker side. His paintings have an honesty about them which I like.
Thank you for introducing me to Lowery and his fantastic art. I'm happy about this discovery -- of an artist who simply painted what moved him, without regard for "fitting in". His story and his paintings are a great inspiration to me as I try to find the courage to ignore my Inner Critic.
This was wonderful. I love it when I stumble upon these Gems on the Internet and learn something beautiful and new. This was a light in the darkness of our time. Thanks!
Lowry's story made my heart hurt. It made me all the happier to see him in a happy moment in the photo of him in a suit covered in paint and standing next to his painting and holding his palette. Thank you for sharing. So many styles, so much talent, but also really capturing in his story and through his work his particular viewpoint and how he was able to interact on this level with a society from which he was somewhat alienated.
@@ArtHistorySchool Yes, it was very, very, sad. With his personality issues he would still have been one, maybe even younger, if his mother hadn't been so selfish and mean. I believe in multiple life times, so I hope this time round he is happier.

I know a lot of my paintings are good, others not so good, I am always learning and drawing and painting, some look like a kid did it. Some have improved. Anatomy is so hard. So I fall back on my stick figures. I did the shooting of George Floyd and others because if they were anatomically correct people wouldn’t like them so I do stick figures scenes, , people could be more detached looking at them.
This historian fails to mention that it was normal to dress boys in a 'dress' and, that no one knew what aspergers was at that time. Did you notice all the negative comments are leveled at his mother? Doesn't that tell you something?
Loved this episode. What an incredible tenacity and focus Lowry had despite all the negativity and naysayers around him. This channel is the best for art history. As always thank you very much for your great videos.

Very interesting. From the beginning of his work I see lots of sadness, loneliness and isolation in his figures, even, when they are in a group. Later in the 20´s I see a strong influence of Art Déco (Reminds me of Tamara de Lempicka). The group paintings - with very dark figures on the white background remind me of the work of the czech painter Josef Lada - although the theme is totally different, I am talking about the contrast of the colors. No, it is not a self portrait. There is a famous quote from L S Lowry where he describes being on a trolley bus and seeing the man asleep on the wall waiting for the bus. He said he was so impressed with the man he created a painting of the incident and put his own initials on his suitcase.
Wonderful video. I love being able to get an insight into an artist's life and the motivation behind their work. It's great having the artwork in the video too!! In one way, it is terribly sad that Lowry experienced such loneliness, yet perhaps without this he wouldn't have made such extraordinary artwork.
I was in Manchester and visited the gallery exhibiting his work, i even have a little shrine at home in his honour! Very touching being and great lecture. Thanks
Brilliant beyond words, Paul!!! Merci beaucoups for introducing me to L.S. Lowry, who, had I met him, would probably have been a dear friend and colleague. Namaste'.
Thank you for such an informative documentary of Lowry’s life richly illustrated with so many images of his work. While on my first and only visit to Tate Britain I saw one of his paintings. At the time I was charmed by the unusual style which conveyed such a sense of busyness and movement of the many figures within a stark urban setting. In it’s primitiveness, it reminded me of an urban version of a Grandma Moses* painting. For years I regretted not making a note as to the painter’s name. Fortunately, due to more recent public awareness of his work and wonderful presentations such as yours, his name is well known to me now. (*Anna Mary Robertson Moses) Thank you for this wonderful series about the artists’ lives beyond their creative output.

Hello I have only just found this channel and can I just say how much I have enjoyed learning about Lowry. When I was younger( many moons ago!) I really didn’t get Lowry but as I have grown up I appreciate his work and have come to enjoy it. Thank you for this informative view of Lowry and I am looking forward to many more. 💕🌞
What a wonderful presentation - I love how you portray the all the painters' characters, as if you are living their lives. I had not heard of LS Lowry - but I will surely do some research now. Thank you, really pleased you are enjoying the series. There will be more, but they do take time to produce. Thanks for the sub and Patreon, much appreciated. Cheers Paul
I discovered his work accidentally after watching the Timothy Spall movie “Mrs. Lowry & Son” - As an engineer and draughtsman from the days of pen and ink, I was struck by the way he distilled buildings down to geometric form with few details and yet introduced a level of depressing misery I was familiar with growing up in the industrial North of England. Spall’s movie on Turner is also worthwhile watching. Very much enjoyed your video, thanks for taking the time to produce it.
Sad story of loneliness but as a artist myself, I understand....he captured the moments of peoples lives in action which is was a gift to the future....RIP

You are a great narrator, what a sad life , the worst thing was the way that his mother treated him,she always demoralized him, yet he felt lost when she died,I enjoyed the video thanks very much🙋♀️
When so many so called knowledgeable critics belittled his obvious skills as draughtsman and painter I still feel, even after his death a need to speak up on his behalf and tell them where to go. None of them today are household names but Lowry is and his work lives on. Well told and enjoyable. Many thanks
Another great video, You have a way of making the miserable lives of many great painters interesting and exciting to watch! I,ve watched them all more than once. Thankyou Paul.
Lowry was Pieter Bruegel of 20 th century. Such a great artist with outstanding skills.I didn’t know about the artist. Shame on me:) You did a great job, Paul. Thanks!
I only discovered Lowry recently, sort of peripherally... and then, when watching Landscape Artist of the Year, Kate Bryan mentioned him (comparing a painter's style to Lowry) and, although I didn't know his name, I knew immediately who she was talking about and looked him up. I was delighted to find that the image (of the painting) I had in my head matched the name ... and became immediately smitten with his work. It makes me so sad that he didn't know just how wonderful he was/is. Thank you for covering THIS Artist!! I so enjoyed this particular episode.
Thank you ,enjoyed it so much .He had a very sad life ,poor man.Was made up to see painting of Old Road ,Fails worth , I grew up on Dean Street just around the corner .👍🤗
THANK YOU!!! I recently inherited a Lowry of 1943 which I have yet to see catalogued! It is, of course, a busy streetscape, people, children and dogs ... I love it but wish I knew more of its intent!
This is such a sad story. He had such a kind face.... his paintings are extraordinary!

When so many so called knowledgeable critics belittled his obvious skills as draughtsman and painter I still feel, even after his death a need to speak up on his behalf and tell them where to go. None of them today are household names but Lowry is and his work lives on. Well told and enjoyable. Many thanks
Yes, he is much under rated. He was a great artist.
What a wonderful artist. His point of view is unique for it’s time.
It certainly was. Cheers
Your personality in these videos always makes me 😊
Yay, thank you!
Another great video, You have a way of making the miserable lives of many great painters interesting and exciting to watch! I,ve watched them all more than once. Thankyou Paul.
Thanks so much 😊
Lowry was Pieter Bruegel of 20 th century. Such a great artist with outstanding skills.I didn’t know about the artist. Shame on me:) You did a great job, Paul. Thanks!
I hadn't made the connection myself, but I think you are probably right.
