Gibson J-160e: All About

  • There are a few notable items I missed:
    1. Neck Profiles: 1950’s had a thicker Les Paul bat style. Early 60’s they made the back of the neck a bit thinner, and in 1965, the neck diameter thins out as you get closer to the first fret.
    2. 1967 more J-160’s start to come through with a wooden saddle. But the earliest example of a wooden saddle on a J-160 was the one Lennon got from Manny’s as a backup while on the 1965 U.S. tour.
    3. 1967 they brought the crown on the headstock lower to be more centered between the A and B strings.
    4. Late ‘68 into 69’ some came with an upside down bridge base.
^Im sure that list will grow as I learn new details. Stay tuned for a Part 2!
I called Gibson customer service twice, and emailed to get more information on year ranges and models. unfortunately nobody could help me. One gentleman told me they stopped making them around 2012 which is clearly incorrect.
They didn’t care to help me and rushed me off the phone as fast as they could.

Excellent video and great information about the gibson J160e Guitar Gear Connection, in 1994 I was in L.A. in a musical instrument store and I bought a gibson J160e that has a 100 year seal for the celebration of the beginning of the GIBSON company, since I was a child I wanted to have one but in my country they did not sell them and next November 25, 2024 I will turn 30 years old With this beautiful instrument I already subscribed and liked it, receive greetings from Guadalajara Jalisco México.

Awesome video! I have an Epiphone EJ160e, the one with John’s gold signature on the body. It admittedly doesn’t get played as much as it used to, I was never that happy with the sound of pickup. But I was so thrilled to have a John Lennon guitar! Played it constantly for years and wrote so many songs on it.
I got a masterbilt Epiphone J200 (because of Buddy Holly) in 2020, and have to admit I enjoy that guitar more in every way. But that EJ160e will always hold a special place in my heart!

The master series are amazing guitars! Love those J200s. And those Epiphone EJ-160’s aren’t bad guitars at all. I plan on making a video all about those next! And thanks for the kind words Eric!

Have it set up with unslotted bridge pins and tusq nut and saddle. It will change and improve the sound. Also the luthier can make the action perfect for playing. It will not be as good as the masterbilt J200, but it will be a rebirth for your guitar!

I bought a 1967 model one year ago. Great condition no neck-reset or any issues. Sure it doesn't sound like a D-45, but it has some really great vibes and sound great if you play it a bit "rougher" like John did - just my opinion. Thank you for the video.

Legendary job Paul. So cool to see the history of the different specs of the J-160e throughout the decades. Defiantly hope to try one out someday but unfortunately I haven't been able to find one yet. My ideal hybrid for a J-160e would be having either the standard or 62 spec with the 69 finish.

Loved the video, also the one about the Beatles strings! I have a 2004 J160e. Mine has the solid X braced top and the P100. I had a Fishman undersaddle and Matrix Infinity preamp installed as I use it mostly as a rhythm guitar and need the more acoustic sound. I use Ernie Ball Earthwood hybrid set with medium low strings and light high strings. This gives me the best of both worlds. I can dig into the bass strings and still be able to bend the high strings. It is my main gigging six string.

I'll have to have my dad confirm, but the Korean Epiphone J-160e guitars were apparently 25.5" scale as opposed to the traditional 24.75" that Gibson used. From what I've read, subsequently released Epiphones produced in Indonesia reverted to the correct scale length.

I have a spruce top 2002 in natural, X braced with the P100. It's a fun guitar, sounds acoustically "close" to a J45 and as many people point out, pretty useless plugged in with acoustic strings. But... it's so cool. Point to note is it plays "different" kinda' halfway between a short scale Gibson and a long scale Gibson acoustic as the bridge is closer to the sound hole and neck "shifts" to the left a fret. Takes a little time to get used to it but has the ability to easily play an open E chord on the 12th fret, interesting.

4:46 So the J160E standard spec now have the elevated "i" in the Gibson logo? I saw that on my 2007 J160E model and thought it was a workmanship flaw when I compared it to my J45 noticing the lowered "i" in the Gibson inlay.

I have a 1993 Gibson J-160 which i bought last year. It had no scratches and looked new on the pictures. When it arrived I saw that the frets were worn down, the neck was not adjusted and when changing the pins, i saw they were bent from 30 years time passing.
I was truly afraid, because the sound was terrible too. So I had the guitar taken care of by a luthier and made some adjustments, now I have tusq nut and tusq saddle (better than bone, trust me, i tried) and unslotted bridge pins (bone, I might change to tusq, but there will be no difference, because I already have unslotted pins).
It features a SOLID Top and x-bracing -> amazing.
It has an undersaddle pickup and a P-100( i think) and It sounds great when fingerpicking (which is odd for a gibson) and ofc good when strummed with a pick.
I dont have gear around here, but in my guitar lesson the sound plugged in was great too.
All of the time, nerves and the money I spent on the guitar was tedious, but it truly sounds great now and I have my favourite guitar after all.

I'm interested in how your under saddle is added, I'm thinking of adding a piezo dot on sound board and think it would be best (easier as well) to tap the piezo into the P100 at the volume control

@@michaelcusack1904 There are some issues: A passive Piezo has a very silent signal and a preamp would need a battery.
Im not a techguy and just recently found out that my passive Piezo does Not work and my P90 (its a p90) has huge defects.
I would like to decide which signal mix i want (Piezo P90) and thats not possible with the gibson.
If you would Use one of the knobs for that, how do u want to change the volume?
Its all a little bit tricky: best is going to a luthier/techguy, and I would recommend you an L. R. Baggs Anthem. Let the expert to the wiring. Then u have a magnetic, piezo and a mic signal to pick up the sound

    Hello great video,
I have a 2008 Gibson J160E. Just J160E written on the label. I has X bracing, I assume solid spruce top, no fret nibs, non adjustable bridge, 60’s style reflectors knobs and a P90 (not P100). The guitar has also piezo so I don’t know if it was original or not. Do you think someone change the P100 to P90 on a Standard spec or it happens to have P90 before 2012?

Bought it from a reputable guitar store and comes with the certificate and authentic Gibson yellow case with JL gold sig silkscreen. I checked the serial number online as well before purchasing and it was built Feb in 2000. But why does mine say out of 250 and not 550 as per your video? as Any info on this would be appreciated. I have a 2001 J160E. I love that guitar and it always draws a crowd when I play it out. Acoustically it plays beautifully. The pickup sound really doesn't cut it for me. It has such a nasally sound. I've been playing with the pickup pole heights and have improved the tone somewhat. Does anyone have any adjustments I can make to improve the electric sound of this guitar?

The late 60's J160E released in 2017 had two types.
    ・Solid top and normal saddle.
・ Ladder bracing and ADJ bridge.
In 2015 and 2017, late 60's J45 reissues were sold at Japanese music stores. One is 1967 style and the other is 1968 style.I think the J-160E of the late 60's reissue in 2017 was produced based on the neck profile of those J45 reissues.
