The Joy of the Jaguar XK140 Comes in Driving It

- Winston Dabbs is a product of his time. As a young man in 1970s Compton, California, he was swept up in the local enthusiasm for British sports cars, status symbols among young black men of the time. Dabbs's own entry into the world of British cars was modest -- a Bugeye Sprite which he bought from a friend for $75 -- but it sparked a passion that has stayed with him to the present day, a passion that led to a career in automotive restoration.
In the late 1990s, however, that passion ebbed when the demands of business and life prompted Dabbs to park his 1955 Jaguar XK140, purchased some ten years earlier, in the back of his garage and throw a cover over it. There the car collected dust for fifteen years until one day a few years back, Dabbs decided to pull it out, dust it off, and take it for a drive in the California sun. The Jag, now fully restored, hasn't had much rest since then, and what rest it does get is thanks to the XK120 that Dabbs brought into his garage in 2012.
Now in what he calls "the highlight of his life," Dabbs is always ready to hop in one of his dropheads and make a break for the city limits.. After all, as Dabbs puts it, "there's no sense in having a car that you look at and say how beautiful it is if you can't get in it and go to San Francisco."

black guy in a white jaguar, deep voice in an old car, I can't imagine I'll ever see another moment this cool.
I like the way he thinks, "gas up and lets go"
No frame off, just pure enjoyment. Well done!
"It's just part of the romance of the vehicle..." maybe the best sentence ever said about living with an old Jag.
Awesome video.
I realize it's kinda randomly asking but do anyone know a good website to watch newly released series online?
Agree wholeheartedly.
I'm not feeling ANY romance from this horrendous video.
That music fits his narration just perfectly.
Those sweeping bubbly front fenders with the thin vertical grille make for one of the most iconic cars of all time. Simply, a true work of art!
This is one of the most beautiful cars in the world.
This guy is old school cool
That guy is a class act, I could have listened to him talk for much longer.
The portion about his apartment littered with car parts is gold.
Winston Dabbs, I hope you enjoy every last mile.
"What are you doing with all these car parts? Well, that's my car! Come back in 2 weeks and I'll give you a ride." Great line.
what a killer combo. that guy is as classy as his car!
Nothing at all classy about an XK140.....
@@michaelmeliambro5117 Damn better car than whatever you're toolin around in. One of the fastest cars of its day, not to mention drop dead gorgeous. Keep your negativity to yourself next time, save yourself the trouble.
@@bobbybasketball1999 Even if it WAS the fastest, I wouldn't care, bcuz it doesn't have the same level of class a first-gen T-Bird does!!
"Let's Gas Up. And Let's Go". Another fantastic tribute. One of the few features in the Petrolicious series where the owner's character possibly outshines that of the car. Brilliant.
This guy is awesome.
Charismatic car for a charismatic gentleman! I became more stylish just watching this.
This is probably one of the best driver-car combos you guys have presented. Winston is out of this world, such an amazing classy character. Please pay him respects from all of us, he well deserves it :)
This guy seems to have everything figured out... He knows how to live and enjoy his life.
Love this guy. He's my new old guy role model
I want to be in a Petrolicious video when I'm older. These people have so much class and passion its amazing
Romance of the vehicle. Classy car, classy driver. Live long and prosper :)
Winston, you sir are the epitome of cool.
"... it's just part of the romance of the vehicle."
I applaud this man.
Amazing, nothing like a classy Jag on the street.
This guy's persona is so damn cool.
Maybe. The car??? Not so much.
Great guy, great story, great cars. I'd love to hang out with Winston and talk cars. Very cool.
What a fantastic guy. I love Petrolicious vids.
Lovely Tuesday another Petrolicious classic!
Absolutely lovely! God bless Winston Dabbs!
Why have I never seen this channel before?? This is probably one of the best (if not the best) car enthusiast channels I have ever had the pleasure of watching!
Sir, you are one cool man and your rides are perfect. Stay fresh.
That car is like a breath of fresh air. Thank you for sharing it.
The Machine, The Garage, The Man... Harmony!!
Thank you Petrolicious and Mr. Dabbs
Hope I'm 1/4 as cool as this guy when I'm that age. Great story, great vid.
What a cool dude
This might be my favorite "owner" yet.
Let's gas up, and let's go.... Super! Thanks, Winston.
What a cool dude. This guy is amazing.
This video, albeit in a truncated form, would make a great advert for Jaguar Cars.
Looks crisp clean, awesome. And cool guy!
This brother has exactly the right view on life and on car ownership. I would love to shake his hand in person. I WANT to be as cool as this man when I get older. Thank you so much for sharing this film, Petrolicious. Best film yet.
Perhaps my favourite episode so far - what a lovely chap.
I could listen to this guy tellin stories all day... Awesome car, awesome owner!
I like this guy!!! Oh yeah, I like his car, too.
The XK140 is a powerful expression of speed and grace. But the sublime experience of driving it is on another level altogether.
I like how raw this guy is he's not trying to be theatrical at all when decides his jag he almost sort of downplays it even though he knows it's worth A LOT money
This guy is classy.
That's a cool cat right there, both the man and the car! Another stellar video from Petrolicious!
Wow. Just. Wow.
Just drips class ! Both of them. Thanks petrolicious.
This guy is awesome. Cars are meant to be driven and enjoyed. I also admire his modesty in what he has built. We need more guys like him at concours events.
General comment about Petrolicious - This is, without a doubt, the best automotive theme show I have ever watched on any medium, at any time in my life. It is the best at illustrating the spirit of the automotive enthusiast, no matter what car they are enthusiastic about. Thank you, Petrolicious.
Nonenthusiasts have no idea how much blood, sweat, and years goes into each and every part of the vehicle from rear view mirror to door handles, it's a true labor of love. Kudos to Winston.
your doing it right....drive and enjoy!
Nothing quite as beautiful as a JAG
Beautiful video. So, so, so good.
What a cool guy, and that jagggggg is just drop dead sexy and elegant. I admire the owners passion for their hard earned and well kept car.
This guy and his car are badass.
Mr Cool with a cool car.
Petrolicious always puts a smile on my face. :)
I love this guy. I hope to someday be half as cool as he is.
I like this guys attitude on life. That is one thing I always think about if I was real rich is how I would like fancy cars, but would be so nervous to drive them. One mistake even something like a rock hitting the paint cost so much money to fix. However at the end of the day an expensive car still has four wheels, some doors, an engine etc just like the cheapest car out there and no point of thinking it's any different.
The definition of cool!
Another excellent video. Many of your videos transcend simple automotive journalism, like this one. It's both poetry and social history.
Style, patina and a whole lot of class, straight outta compton!
something about old black guys with an american accent is just charismatic for some reason
Nothing better than the man who can fix what he's driving and build up other car's along the way great video thanks for sharing it with us 😁😁👍👍
Wonderful man, awesome video! He has such class and captures the XK Jaguar experience perfectly. I'd love to meet him!
envy this guy.. livin the life! oh i wish, one day
Best episode, Great Man, Great Car
Yet another superb film from Petrolicious. A lovely car. I have a soft spot for Jaguars and Daimlers. I learned to drive in a Daimler Majestic and owned a 1966 2.5 V8 for a while. My brother in law had a fast 3.8 Mk2 - I thhink I prefer 6 cylinder cars to V8s; tjhey have such a lovely rasp. It's a shame Winston doesn't have the opportunity to drive the car fast - on song at 100mph plus is a delight in those old Jags providing the suspension is up to scratch. I like Winston's huge garage too - very envious!
Winston knows his chit! lol The key to keeping any car of any year running and in good health is to drive it and not let it sit for long periods of time
Winston is one helluva cool dude! The Jag is beautifully done. This channel is awesome! 🙌
I hope one day to be half as cool as him.
love the comment "white wire wheels are for old men"....ahahah I guess I am on old man thank you Sir great vid and I like your input in the matter.
Cracking car and yet another great owner.
Petrolicious, you folks are KILLING me with your content! I love it!...
I love old Jags, they are so art deco. This guy is cool, his voice and the jazz just go together well with the car.
I never get tired of watching this story 😊
Good memories, I leaned to drive stick shift in a car just like this one a 1956 xk 140. My father bought used in the 60ies, loved it.
"Come back in two weeks and i'll give you a ride" 😂
An absolutely gorgeous machine.
Love the camera work, story and music as always. Lets not forget how cool Winston is :D
Nice video. Really nice.
That's one cool cat
...would be a blast jumpin' in that Jag and doin' the Coast Highway up to Frisco... ;-)
The music to these videos are so perfect. Ahhhh
probably one of my favorites!
excellence as only Petrolicious can seem to provide
Winston Dabbs, you are a man after my own heart when it comes to beautiful motorcars! thank you so much for sharing!
I bought one in 1975 from an oil exec (who was tired of DIY repairs) when I was in high school. Paid $2700 and loved the car. Everyone thought I was pretty weird and I usually heard, " why dont you get a camaro like your brother?" or "is that a Japanese car?" That's life in Oklahoma. Sold it to go to college in California. Nice to see someone appreciate it. I miss the smell of leather, wood and gasoline.
What a lovely man Winston is, and what a beautiful car.
Love the video, once again you guys find a great person to interview who happens to also have a cool car!
Winston, I live in L.A., too, and I hope I get to meet you and see your cars one day.
Elegant gentleman and car.
The first sports car in which I ever rode. Uncle John had a black 140, and I was 6 or 7. Now, almost 70, I now look back on a long series of sports cars over the years. Now, I'm fine in a 2012 supercharged A6 with a few minor mods. Handles well. Goes like stink. Love to cruise along w/"Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" playing on the stereo. But Winston is clearly the fly guy! Roll on my black brother. You are class, first and last!
Winston Dabbs is the world's coolest guy.
Moby Dick zombies choose to _die another day._ Because we _only live twice._
+Moby Dick You lost that battle hard.
Moby Dick
Because the ordinary is a dick in it.
Would be cooler if he could learn to speak English
Not only a cool car but a cool owner to, I like it! :)
Just plain awesome. :)
The absolute best video so far, not because of the car, but because of the owner. Coolest guy to hit Petrolicious so far. Although I like old Jags, still like my old P and F cars more but I enjoyed this video more than any of the F/P car videos because the owner has more style and vibe than the car itself and that speaks volumes.
Wonderful car man. I had a XK140MC in 56. It was my first car and I got it on my 16th birthday
Loved that guy haha! Nice!
