I'm an Aussie who's had the good fortune to travel extensively, and one thing I learned is, "Wherever you go, there you are." But whoever you are, you have the best chance of being the best you that you can be, if you live in Australia.

Ross, no doubt you've heard the term `whineging Pom', and needless to say, I've met a few of them in my time.
I'm happy to note that you are not one of them ... not even close.

"what can you afford in Australia in comparison to what you could get in the Uk?" I'm not from the UK but in comparison to SA, you can pretty much get a free holiday with amazing scenery and enjoy road trips, more time with your loved ones, and a proper night's rest without fear, stress or allergies keeping you up due to pollution. On top of that, you can leave your dogs alone at home if you just want to go on a date with your partner or go grocery shopping without the fear of your dogs getting poisoned. You can afford being a parent, having hobbies and experience the outdoors even just a walk down the street. When owning a normal salary in Australia, you can afford a lot more than where I'm from, like fresh vegetables, cheese, meat, enough to eat 3 times a day. In conclusion, you can afford "living" and not just "survive".
We have family friends who moved to Australia about 15 years ago and to this day they are still happy and would never come back to SA. Our visas are currently in progress but so far everything is going well, my only concern is how we'll get the dogs over and cover all those costs and my flight ticket. Luckily our visas, my husband's plane ticket, skill tests and everything else except the English test is sponsored, which makes things a little easier since he's going over first. A fresh start is all we need and Australia seems perfect in every way, even with the few negatives such as natural disasters and slower internet (to us it is worth it).

I am an Australian and I love the UK and the history associated with it. In saying that I love every time I get off a plane in Melbourne and smell the air. It smells like home to me. I am sure thats the same in Brisvegas. You can live in paradise and holiday back home. Nothing is forever and you are a long time dead. Have a crack, If it is not for you then OK go back. Nothing ventured nothing changed.

Seriously considering a move down under with the family but at 43 (wife and two kids under 5) I do wonder however maybe I’ve left it too late in life even though I know it’s technically still possible.
It’s things like deferring my current final salary pension and if I have enough time to build a decent superannuation to plug the difference etc
On the other hand throwing caution to the wind for the change in lifestyle is the driving factor.

    • @lutontown5923
      @lutontown5923 8 месяцев назад +1

My parents moved from the UK, aged their late 30s, in the early 1950s, with two children and my mum was pregnant with me. We now adult children thank them for doing this. We are blessed with secure and happy lives in a wonderful feel-free country. All of us have travelled back to the UK, including some of the grown grandchildren. and we know which is the better place to live in !

Many who move here from the UK or any other country have to realise that the country you came from is now no longer your home. Moving physically is easy but moving mentally is far more difficult as you'll automatically compare what you had in the old country to what you now have in Australia. Some find that they've only moved mentally by 50% and the other 50% is still in the old country and that other 50% is very powerful because it's what you know and are used to. Australia is a whole new experience full of uncertainties and unless you can get that other 50% out of the old country then you'll leave Australia and go back to the old country and never return to Australia and unfortunately many do.
Don't forget Ross now you're working in Australia not only do you get many holidays as a teacher but you also get Long Service Leave which for those who don't know in other parts of the world is EXTRA leave on top of and in addition to annual leave. Ross as a teacher doesn't just get it because he's a teacher, EVERY working person in Australia gets it. After 10 years some take it and that 10 extra weeks off. But there's no requirement to take it so many allow it to accrue and then retire from the workforce early whilst still getting paid by the employer. When they get near to using all their LSL and any untaken annual leave they send an email to the employer telling them they retiring from work.

Australia is a great place to grow old in too - I'm a 74 year old single* driving instructor who has moved back from the wonderful Northern Territory to my home state of equally wonderful South Australia. I was worried about financial hardship because I didn't make much money in the NT and rents there are high. The Australian government looks after the aged extremely well - I was visited by aged care experts who provided grab-handles and a wooden front-door step** for free of charge, and the last time I got my diabetes medication I was surprised to find they were free! (the pharmacist said I had reached the" monthly limit". Our Medicare system is great - have private health insurance is still a good idea but we are better than the $-hungry US where I heard of a young boy being sent home to die because his family couldn't afford the operation.
Yes wages are good in Australia and it's nice to not be expected to tip (once again, in contrast to the US). I don't know the tipping situation in the UK.
We share a lot in common with our Kiwi brethren from NZ (we are generally fond of them but we don't like to tell them that).
I'll post about religion some other time.
    * I'm single at 74 and people still ask me if I'm going to get married when I grow up.
**The old loose- brick doorstep was a trip hazard.

My convict ancestors won the transported for life lottery in 1828. Dumped on hulks and 4 months free ride to sunny Australia. Over 60% of male convicts were literate and most were transported for minor crimes trying to feed their starving children. They were then assigned to provide free labour for wealthy landowners or worked in chains building roads or other infrastructure. Some even had their wives and children given free passage to Australia when given a ticket of leave at the end of their sentence. Which is why I am able to write this comment. 😃
