It's just so cool that there is a Victorian novella about the Salem Witch trials.
It makes sense that not having an emotional engagement would keep it lower on the list; I was thinking yesterday about just what exactly makes me love Victorian literature and one thing that stood out is that it's overall extremely emotionally engaging, I love that when I read it both my intellect and emotions are engaged. 💜

It is a really interesting book, even though not as emotionally engaging as other books (such as Wives and Daughters which in my current reread nearing the end is making me cry every other chapter!)

Wow. I SO wish I was a more critical reader like you - I love when you make this type of video where you delve into the story and subject matter as you've done. Great!

I've read a couple of Gaskell books and plan to read the rest of her novels, but you've sold me on this one too!

I can't wait for your number 1 Gaskell novella so I can start there. Also looking forward to your discussion of Mary Barton because I have the book on my nightstand for almost a year.

I’ve been enjoying this series so much! I haven’t read any Gaskell but oddly this seems like the one I’m most drawn to. I didn’t realize the Salem Trials were something British Victorians might have been interested in!

I have read only one of her novellas, Half A Lifetime Ago. The writing was good but didn’t like the deep sorrow after reading it. Will try to read her other novellas

But the book made me reflect upon the best arrangement for those mentally challenged and their families

I would recommend her other novellas too - that one isn't my favourite, and there are so many great ones.

I finished this yesterday and just cannot get it off my mind. It had a major emotional impact on me - my heart ached for Lois after finishing the book. It was like watching a train wreck - you know what is coming but cannot look away. Any recommendations for happier Gaskell fare? I feel like I need some time to recover from the misery conveyed in this novel - yikes!!!

Thanks, she is definitely worth a read :) I'm no longer a student - I now work in publishing. I'm currently rereading Wives and Daughters by Elizabeth Gaskell and reading Salem Chapel by Margaret Oliphant.
