Fatigue - The Biggest Killer!

  • Fatigue is by far the biggest issue in long distance trucking. Any truck driver who says they’ve never fallen asleep and scared the hell out of themselves is lying. We may hate the work diary but it’s there to make sure we don’t end up a statistic. Yes there are problems with it and in certain instances it forces you drive when tired to get the job done, but it’s there to try and keep us all safe.
A couple of trucking stories around fatigue, a prank on a mate, accidentally pranking myself after a long night, and a tale of just how quick fatigue can get you…
You can’t out run fatigue, the only cure is sleep.
Pre plan your trip and pre plan your rest, before and during a trip. Eat a light meal rather than a heavy one, as digestion uses energy and makes you sleepy too. Stimulants, such as coffee and sugar can wake you up but the effect is short lived and you inevitably crash back to your tired state often quite suddenly.
    Take care out there.

You don’t have to be a truckie to suffer from fatigue - but it’s great to see someone attempting to address the issue!

Mate you have hit the nail on the head! I have done plenty of driving (HC) but not to the extent you do! I owned my own truck and was doing livestock work within 100k radius, (just)! 4 loads in 24 hours. An hour sleep half way through the day.
I also worked for a company carting corn from Darlington point back up to Batlow Cannery.
Heading along from Narrandera to Wagga. Set the cruise control! Had a micro sleep and was woken by a truck behind me on the UHF and horn ! I was well within my hours!
Wasn't used to sleeping during the day to go to work on dusk!
The one problem I fond with truck parking areas are the number of vehicles coming in and out all night! No matter how dark your sleeper or cab is! Headlights at 2 am seem brighter than the SUN!

I drive a medical waste transport truck. I have nodded off a few times for a very short period of time or driven from one side of Melbourne to the other and don't remember how I got there. I will find a spot to pull over off the freeway and have a 15 minute power nap and call my boss after it. They are very happy I pulled over.

Good points mate, shared to both my Facebook pages. Got into Brunswick yesterday morning at 6am, left the truckie at the unload site, got out onto the Hume and had 4 hours in the park over the hill from Kalkalo.

A very very true statement,I enjoy you informative video. I hope that the Truckies are listening. Driving with one eye opened is bad . I missed whole towns before .

A mate told me if u want to have a quick nap, do so while slumped over the steering wheel, his theory is that you're uncomfortable enough u wont go into a deep sleep and once u have rested enough will automatically wake up after a short time

It isn't just truck driving, any form of driving can suffer from fatigue.
Leaving out drugs/alcohol, the killers are
    1) fatigue
    2) frustration
    3) speed.
But the only one the cops can hit you for is speed and every power to be can get that lovely income from policing speed while also getting the big business power brokers on side ( won't chase the companies with ridiculous time frames, just the drivers being punished if they don't manage to fill them ).

Thanks, Rob, but you and I both know that the problem lies with the big companies supermarkets seem to be the worst these are the people who need to have the pressure put on them NOT the drivers some Of these time slots are impossible as you know, but the powers to be are still blaming the drivers this was supposed to change many years ago and they have done nothing, And the other issue is the rate per Kilometre also needs fixing and again was promised and nothing has been done there neither until some of these things change drivers are not going to get there correct amount of sleep.

Your body managers energy firstly to brain and heart function. Eating too much at any one time can make you tired because your body directs available energy to digestion. Being dehydrated after eating also uses energy to convert body fat into water for digestion. This redirecting of energy can affect brain function. This results is tiredness. Falling asleep when driving is your body protecting your brain. If this did not occur you could becoume comatosed and die. Understanding human biology can go a long way to a long happy life. Cheers
