1. Frühling (Abschlussdatum: Pontresina, 13. Juli 1948; Text: Hermann Hesse, April 1899)
2. September (Abschlussdatum: Montreux, 20. September 1948; Text: Hermann Hesse, 23. September 1927)
3. Beim Schlafengehen (Abschlussdatum: Pontresina, 4. August 1948; Text: Hermann Hesse, Juli 1911)

Nie so schön gehört!
Freut mich, danke!
As a non singer, I can only say that I was thoroughly impressed by the sheer beauty of the music, and that is the total blending of voice and orchestra, that I can, without hesitation, say,"Bravo! Bravo"! Magnificence from Strauss made accessible for those who choose to listen.
My orchestra, the Saint Paul Chamber, played these songs with Jessye Norman in the 1980's. They are deep, the poems are exquisite, and this singer does a wonderful job with them. Miss Harteros' intonation is perfect. At age 75, the import of the music/text is much more impactful than it was when I was in my early thirties. I understand and share Strauss' emotions. They are mine, too. Thanks for sharing
very moving..
I can certainly relate to the emotions you're talking about while listening to Ms. Harteros's gorgeous interpretation of one of the most beautiful works Strauss ever wrote. I can still remember vividly when Ms. Felicity Lott singing this so beautifully with Andrew Davis and BBC SO back in 1998, I was right in front row.
Today is the first time I’ve ever listened to these songs, and I am brought to tears.
To think we live in such a world where something as beautiful as this music is possible.
I am but 25 years old, and it feels as though I have only just lived. This music gives me hope for the future of our world.
Thank you for posting this
Thanks and all the best for you!
Try listening to them in Jessye Norman's voice. It's mind-bending.
And Jesus will give You much more... read his Words to You. ..no church, only He.
I have heard Anja with 4 letzte Lieder tonight at Tonhalle in Zürich with Tonhalle-Orchestra. She was again so wonderful. It was great music.
That ist right, she ist so nice Person,i See her Smile to everyone at the Performance.
One of the greatest melodies written by any Strauss? The violin solo at 10:50......entranced every time I hear it! Gorgeous.
Beautiful voice. Very moving rendition.
Thank you .
Könnte wirklich heulen . Nein , ich heule . So sehr passend, besonders "Im Abendrot". Meine Mutter ist am Donnerstag verstorben.
So sorry :(
Danke.
This is so beautiful, what a wonderful rendition! Thank you very much, indeed!
Beautiful timber and color.
November in München.
❤️🎶🍀🍄👨👩👧🌹🌷🌻🦋
good performance. the conductor is wonderful too, he knows every second of the music.
I still don´t know how a soprano can begin the 2nd part of "Beim Schlafengehen" after this magnificent solo violin without tears in their eyes. What a joy it must be to sing this endless "Und die Seele unbewacht" when a voice can be just beautiful.
a real Strauss, wonderful light bows of conditioned musical lines. The text of the poems are very worthy. A highlight in the classical music, I love the "four last songs"
Still one of my favorite versions. Thank you, Mrs Harteros, Mr Jansons and of course the great Mr Strauss. (And a special thanks to Ralph Joachim for posting this magnificent video. At least 30 of your 78.236 views are mine.)
Marvellous rendition and interpretation ! Somptuous orchester and amazing voice ! Strauss is so difficult to sing but so splendid music. Thank's Mme Harteros.
Why are people so intolerant of live performance these days? There are several recorded versions of this piece I love for different reasons, but it is possible to set comparisons aside and enjoy this performance. I particularly like the concentration and tone colouring Anja Harteros brings to the 4th song. Live performance means the possibility of imperfections, but it also means spontaneity which is what we have here and that is precious. Thank you for posting this Ralph Joachim.
armchair conducters are as bad as armchair generals. all they do is share their ignorance.
@@painstruck01 agreed, RUclips, Facebook and the like are littered with people who feel that humanity is starved for their opinions. Le sigh.
@@retgrimes You nailed it, Eric. It seems to be the age of narcissism.
Very well said! Thank you!
- extraordinaire travail d'orchestre, quelle musique !
Richard Strauss....Mariss Jansons ....Anja Harteros......❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Continuo aqui, sempre, Sr. Ralph Joachim.
There can be no encores after a performance like this because the music itself is the ultimate encore.
I know im randomly asking but does any of you know a way to get back into an Instagram account..?
I somehow lost the account password. I would appreciate any assistance you can give me.
@Matias Santino Instablaster =)
@Lennon Darren i really appreciate your reply. I found the site through google and I'm trying it out now.
Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
@Lennon Darren HOLY **** IT ACTUALLY WORKED :O I literally hacked my instagram login within roughly 40 minutes by using the site.
I had to pay 15 bucks but for sure worth it :O
Thanks so much you really help me out!
@Matias Santino No problem =)
Perfectly delightful. Yes each singer brings her own skills and interpretation, and thats a lot of the fun in music.. ...
Honest and straightforward performance. No excessive rubati, etc. We need more like this, all comparisons aside. Play the music, don't dramatize it, if you please.
Yes my sentiments too :)
Absolutely love it ❤️ Sadly Mr. Jansons has left us for the world where Mr. Strauss depicted in this sublime music work.
PS, 289,693 is my view. I know I'll be back again.
A Orquestra é imbatível!
A melhor composição de Richard Strauss.
Muito bom gosto o seu. Muito obrigado.
Many thanks Ralph Joachim, Anja Harteros sings these songs superbly and hats off as well to Maestro Jansons and the Bayerischen Rundfunks. Distressing though how this video has inspired so many absurd and even disgraceful comments: hardly what you would have expected! 'What a piece of work is a man' indeed...
Muito obrigado por compartilhar isso comigo. Ouvi quase todas as versões, é indubitavelmente a melhor. Vou comprar.
enchanting, sublime, awesome. A wonderful experience for me.
I agree with Mauro Anastacio that we shouldn't compare singers: each has his or her own unique sound and I for one believe that Anja Harteros is one of the very best contemporary sopranos - even better then Netrebko. Her interpretation of the Vier letzte Lieder is wonderful and very moving. Perhaps the slightest bit too restrained at times, but none the less: beautiful.
What does "even better than Netrebko" mean? She is a mediocre singer and without comparing anybody here, she lacks any refinement that is needed for such music as "4 letzte Lieder"
A thoroughly enjoyable rendition. Thank you :)
It sounds to me when I read some of these comments, that there are a lot of frustrated artists, mainly singers, or wannabe singers, who NEVER made it in any way, and come to youtube to criticize and feel better about themselves. I particularly don't enjoy Anja's rendition of these lieder, but she is an amazing artist, and even so she performed below her level of artistry here, she is doing much much much more in this single performance than most of you frustrated singers will EVER do in your entire careers (if there should ever be a career for you)
ricardo buhrer absolutely right. a lot of these comments are BULLSHIT. every video you see, they talk about intonation problems ! it's the new trend.
ricardo buhrer BAM!
wouldn't be so sure that the people criticising are nobodies... their internet foot-prints sometimes show they're THEM themselves
Bravo!
What a dream to sing these pieces with a fabulous orchestra in a hall like that.
I love even if the orchestra is a little heavy, Anja's Lieder are simple and beautiful: like Strauss
Excellent. Thanks very much
Most marvellous rendition!
There are numerous recordings of these wonderful songs available, and I've heard most of them . For my money, Jessye Norman blows the opposition away.
there is no 'opposition'. Just different singers.
Each soprano brings her individual talent to this sublime music. Brava Mariss
OUTSTANDING!
Danke.
Brava archibrava so wunderschöööööööööön
danke dass Sie uns teilhaben lassen
das ist himmlisch
Very good. Brava Harteros. Me gusta Orquesta+Jansons, we can hear humanity.
I love her vocal tone....Brava!!!!
Around;
0:50 Frühling
4:27 September
9:06 Beim Schlafengehen
14:40 Im Abendrot
0:53 Frühling (Hesse)
In dämmrigen Grüften
träumte ich lang
von deinen Bäumen und blauen Lüften,
von deinem Duft und Vogelsang.
Nun liegst du erschlossen
in Gleiß und Zier,
von Licht übergossen
wie ein Wunder vor mir.
Du kennest mich wieder,
du lockest mich zart,
es zittert durch all meine Glieder
deine selige Gegenwart!
4:32 September (Hesse)
Der Garten trauert,
Kühl sinkt in die Blumen der Regen.
Der Sommer schauert
Still seinem Ende entgegen.
Golden tropft Blatt um Blatt
Nieder vom hohen Akazienbaum.
Sommer lächelt erstaunt und matt
In den sterbenden Gartentraum.
Lange noch bei den Rosen
Bleibt er stehen, sehnt sich nach Ruh.
Langsam tut er die grossen,
Müdgewordenen Augen zu.
9:12 Beim Schlafengehen (Hesse)
Nun der Tag mich müd gemacht,
Soll mein sehnliches Verlangen
Freundlich die gestirnte Nacht
Wie ein müdes Kind empfangen.
Hände, lasst von allem Tun,
Stirn, vergiss du alles Denken,
Alle meine Sinne nun
Wollen sich in Schlummer senken.
Und die Seele, unbewacht,
Will in freien Flügen schweben,
Um im Zauberkreis der Nacht
Tief und tausendfach zu Leben.
14:47 Im Abendrot (von Eichendorff)
Wir sind durch Not und Freude
gegangen Hand in Hand;
O weiter, stiller Friede!
So tief im Abendrot.
Wie sind wir wandermüde -
Ist dies etwa der Tod?
This is a performance that gets better and better as it progresses. The last two songs are well nigh perfect. Harteros has a strong top but I find the middle and lower parts of her voice very expressive. She might indeed improve upon this performance later in her career but this is a superb performance from all concerned and I am grateful that it available to view.
Congratulations Ms Harteros for an outstanding performance. Good luck in your future career and life. And more Richard Strauss please!
it takes great skill to master these pieces and this team was simply beyond exceptional. I'm on my third listening....bravi tutti!
No words , just AMAZING!!!!!!!! Brava
Clear as bell and wonderful diction. Hopefully she will grow with these songs as most sopranos do. I'd love to hear her singing more Strauss!

Beautiful....quite different than my preferred audio recording for this great work: Lucia Popp & Klaus Tennstedt.

amazing...beautiful
thank you
I did not know this young soprano she is a very nice singer. one of the best! .with great musicality and a perfect technical voice;
it's great .thank you for your talent Mrs Harteros
Fantastico e impressionante. Thank you very very much for video
Prachtige uitvoering
So beautifull! There are no words to express my feelings. I loved it ever since I heard it for the first time.
I like it.Beautiful Masterwork.-
Bellissima esecuzione. Grazie
Such class, how Ms. Harteros just stood there and let then great ending comes........
LA GLORIA ! Gracias.
After repeat listening, I come to realize that this is indeed a very good performance. There are not many recorded version available in the market can better this and the fact that this is a live performance make it special. The voice of Anja Harteros fits perfectly to the sound picture that Strauss created. She could of course improve on the interpretation with time. As it is, she is already better then many more illustrious singers before her singing this heavenly music.
Fantastic
Hemels bedankt.
HARTEROS = BEAUTY, CLASS, REFINEMENT.
At 10:55, it would be great to know the make of this solo violin. This is a violin voice I've never heard before that is deep, rich, and consistent.
Harteros+orchestra are fantastic!
really impressive interpretation!
Beautiful experience! Salle Pleyel will be the place to spend the evening of 4th october.
Yes indeed this is very well sung! The interpretaton could not be better! All beauty is grounded in the Absolute who is not so critical!

I'm her new fan. She sings like an angel!!
19:59 - 20:50 "...ist dies etwa der Tod?"... One of the highest points in Western music of all times.
please,it's so beautifull ad more that!!it's ythe waY to Heaven!!woud you be so kind translating these beautifull lieder?
Beautiful singing with a shining stage presence.

Coming soon: IMovie edited in a documentary format out of last recital given on the same songs in my own chamber music version, dated June 07, 1997, at Herbst Theatre of San francisco, California.
Amazing!
Wunderbahr!
This is very well sung.....and yet..., perhaps when she is older, she will bring a deeper interpretation.
lundilar agreed...
absolutely, comes across a little air-headed and no doubt age discrepancy between Strauss's last, and her firsts
First class condescension, well done!
Danke Anja!
KÖSZÖNÖM
sublime!!
Lovely violin solo too in 'Beim Schlafengehen'.
Perfectament interpretada, i una bona veu. Molt bé.
Simplesmente divino!
This is high order art, and most people that have watched this, know that...
Now as I go to sleep. Please let me dream of this. If not, I will see you again in the light of the morning.
This is a splendid performance from both singer and orchestra. However, for my own personal taste I feel that the voice of Felicity Lott was the ideal for these marvellous songs. Her interpretation made everything sound so effortless as her voice simply floated above the orchestra. Harteros is, I feel, at times more singing in operatic mode rather than as a Lieder singer.
An unforgettable performance, and as well a sublime elegy for Maestro Jansons - 1943 - 30 Nov. 2019.
Por favor deixe essas 4 canções sempre. Muito obrigado.
uuuauuu...ethereal.......perfect¡¡¡¡........
Cannot wait to hear her Kaiserin later this month!
