I've been using my Schoeps CMC6u + Mk41 combination to record the sounds of robotics lately but feel I want that bass extension...some more beef. I've been thinking of getting a mk22 capsule so I can reject more sound from 180 degrees and have a fatter sound in mono. Wondering if going with the CMD42 body will be worth it...and then getting an AES42 capable recorder. I was looking at the Sanken CO-100k and the new CUX-100k...but I can see the obvious merit of using the Schoeps setup. Not only would it be more affordable, but more modular and compatible to my current kit. I've spent a small fortune on my studio microphones and Neve/RND preamps this year, so I may have to wait until next year to get anything else.
You could try something as straightforward as enhancing the off-axis field by tuning the servo on a resonant object, like a box. The "beef" quality in some microphones often comes from an off-axis boost in EQ in the lower frequencies, in my experience. Other techniques worth exploring include adding a contact microphone to the object to capture even more low-end frequencies.
Great video! I was wondering how you can record three capsules with only 2 cmd42. Is it possible to connect multiple capsules to one cmd42 and then output both signals on one cable? Thanks!
Good question, the Cantar Mini can only support 2 chs of AES42, so with my Double Mid Side set up I can only use 2 CMD 42 (MS) and the rear (third) mic is analog (CMC 1L). AES42 is dual ch, but you can only use one capsule per AES42 input (from my understanding, or in the case of the CMD 42).
