My wife and I are in the market for a used class A RV and have found a 32' 2004 Tripe E Commander which is reasonably priced considering all the mechanical works done to it (we're in Canada). Thanks for your honest points, it really helps to realize owning one of these is not easy and requires ton of work to keep them in shape. I've made note of all the "inspection" points to look for when we go view our potential new used RV this weekend.
I’m glad I came across your video!!! I just purchased my first RV!! 1999 fleetwood bounder 34V one issue I found was a leveling Jack was leaking fluid which was fixed the next week by owner, everything else worked perfect 👌 thank you for posting this informative video it really helped!!

It was strictly for them. They told me. Cool! I thought that was the funniest thing I ever heard out of a pair of grandparents LOL! Keep those lousy filthy stinky destructive grandchildren out of our Motorhome! And it appears. They purchased it from another elderly couple themselves. Who perhaps also didn't invite their grandchildren on board? It's 100% stock and like new, still. These old retired folk. Certainly didn't rag or trash it out. They took great care of it. The treated, tenderly. With great loving care. It's absolutely beautiful. Those somethings were replaced. From the originals. They got rid of those lousy old large and heavy, CRT, TV sets. And replaced with nice flat panel LCDs. One in the front. One in the bedroom. But I'm going to put in 2 much larger ones. As I am a real TV Junkie. And I love my computers displayed on the Big Screen. So I can sit across the room from them. And still read the small type on the screen. From the 40 inch, 46 inch and 65 inch displays. Now I don't have any room for windows! Oh well? Who needs Windows when you are watching the BOOB Tube? You want subdued lighting. And with the large LCD Panels blocking the windows. You get that. And so there will be LCD TVs. Wherever you look. Within the Coach and the Bedroom. And I will need an LCD Projector and a large LCD-TV on a stand. Outdoors. I might also get a large inflatable screen? And we can do Drive In Movie Nights. I can create for us. It would be fun. And show old Boris Karloff Frankenstein movies and such. Maybe a Star Trek Movie Night that goes till Dawn? Just like the old days. And plenty of microwave popcorn. At the ready. Who doesn't love microwave popcorn? I mean when I throw a party. I throw a,, party. At you got to do it right. On the right day. At the right time. Then there is no problem. This was a great video. Thank you. RemyRAD

Hi everyone Jim La Verde here. Welcome to This Old Coach everything Rv. I have been a Rv owner for years and enjoy sharing information to make your Rv experience a good one. Please feel free to comment, would love to get your input on ideas and subjects that you think need to be covered. I will be posting new clips frequently.
This was a great posting for us. We are about to shop for a used RV and knowing what to look for really is timely for us. Of course we are debating gas or diesel, knowing the goods & bags of each! Had a Class B for a short time powered by a MB turbo diesel. It really was stingy with the fuel, had more than ample power but the rig was just way too small for extended travel. Luckily it sold fast and for more than what we paid for it.
@@thisoldcoacheverythingrv2625 thank you for response a year ago I ended up buying a 95 Chevy Fleetwood flair it's got a 454 just finished restoring it been living the life for the last year!

Sorry about the breathing. Darth Vader was the only camera guy that could film. Lol That was my son. Anyway glad you got some good info. If you have any questions regarding a Rv purchase would love to help.
So I am totally excited. I have been doing a complete remodel on my Allgro Bay. I just got a brand new leather sleeper sofa for $65 on Auction. Thats pretty darn cool. I will make a video about the purchase. Anyway that just happened. I had to tell someone. Best of luck with your purchase. Go see the Rv durning the day, it will take several hours, don't rush through it, every little thing that does not look right or is broken use as a bargaining chip. Take it on the highway. Nuf said.
Aw man that's awesome! Congrats on the leather sofa and the price especially! Appreciate the words of wisdom regarding what to look for as a "bargaining chip" too!
Just take your time. Make sure every appliance works, Frig, stove, microwave every light inside and out including cargo lights, coach running lights, Dash Ac, Roof air/heat pumps furnace, fresh water pump, generator starts and powers the Rig, some generators start but will not power the coach thats a repair, age and condition of the tires coach batteries, age, condition of the exterior, fading decals, damage to the body, check the roof for cleanliness and if its been cared for. Really look carefully for leaks, soft walls especially under and around windows and slide area, window shades that work properly. Make sure the commode holds water, check every faucet, hot water heater. I could go on and on. I am a used Rv sales man worst nightmare lol. Ya when you start looking let me know. I get to pick up the sofa tomorrow morning its a relax a lounger verona euro lounger, cream color.
@@thisoldcoacheverythingrv2625 Thank you very much for responding back. I live in Winnipeg, Manitoba and have been looking at various RV's on Kijiji to see the pricing and makes and models. Quite fun looking at these. I came across on old 1975 Barth, a Beaver and Leo Craft motorhomes. I will just have to save some monies for a bit ( one year period) and then one year from now I show be more knowledgable in all these makes and models. Thank you again!
When you are checking for water intrusion, look down as well as up. If you see any black marks on the floor or if the floor is soft you have a real problem that will cost thousands to repair. Also, make sure you walk the roof looking for loose or bad caulking, soft spots etc.
That was very helpful info. My plan is this week is to purchase a 2001 SunVoyager. It has 35,000 miles on it. The tires were purcased in 2012 but the coach was driven after that. The generator is not working. Without seeing I have him down to $15,000. With your tips I plan on getting it down further.
Got a good deal on mine 2000 Rexhall diesel. I have fixed the air bag suspension with a $30 part and paid labour and also have the guy fix the generator. What I'm still working on is mice and the furnace doesn't blow warm air.
I came across this video in my research. Trying to decide between class A or C. I've never owned either. I want a class A for the room but class C for ease of parking. I will be living in whichever I buy and parking on land I own. Don't really plan to be traveling around in it but if I were to do that then a class C makes more sense. Anyway, I'll welcome any advice and I'll be watching more of your videos. Thanks!
Hey Laura thanks for your comment. So yes there are major differences between a Class A and C. I have never owned a class C but maybe I can help. So my Rv is 34 ft long and it took some getting used to driving and parking. At this point I am very comfortable driving as well as parking and with a little practice so can you. So if you plan on parking the coach on your land and not driving as much I would go with a bigger Rig. You will find that space is always very important part of full timing. Which ever class Rv you chose will have to consider, water, power and sewer. You will need to dump your black tank every three to four weeks if you are in the coach on your own, when my family and I traveled it was every 3 days max. Then there is water for showers, dishes ect... Then there is electric which I would recommend a 50 amp service. Most class Cs do not have leveling jacks, standard with Class A Cs are smaller and easer to park A class more room, especially with a couple of slides Class A can come with a Diesel pusher or a gas engine Class A usually the drivers and passengers chairs turn around offering more seating in the main cabin area Class C The drivers area is more like a van Class A more storage underneath as well as inside Class C will give you better fuel economy around 10 mpg Class A 6 or 7 if you are going down hill with a tail wind lol The view for the passengers through the front windows while traveling is much better in a class A You can find Class As with a Washer and Dryer Not to sure about a class C, but I don't think so. These are just a few things to consider while trying to make a choice. Take your time when making your purchase there are plenty of well taken care of coaches out there. Some make look really good but have not been maintained. Good roof, good tires, running Generator, lots to consider. Take the coach on a long test drive city and highway. I am here to help anyone before they make the leap. Rv ing is a blast but it does take work. Please feel free to ask any questions. Blessings Jim Ps if I think of anything else I will share it on this comment thread
@@thisoldcoacheverythingrv2625 Thank you so much Jim, for your helpful information. I've NEVER driven a class A or C so in either case the test drive would be as a newbie and a private seller might be concerned. I'll see if I can learn or get experience beforehand. I really lean towards the class A for all the room and there is a dump station close by. In reviewing the photos of my property (2000 miles away) the alley I would drive down to back into the property is only one lane so I'm wondering if that will be an issue in backing in. Seems I'd really need a spotter. Any advice would help.
I think Class As are 8 foot wide. A good back up camera as well as a spotter and two way radios for backing in is a must. When ever I have to back in anywhere I have a spotter with a radio. Many years ago I hit the side of my dads house when visiting. Lesson learned. I was in a hurry. Never be in a hurry when moving. You will be better off with a Class A I think. They do make them as small 30 foot long. I wish mine had a rear slide as well. When you get your Rv find a empty parking lot, bring a friend with you. Drive around the parking lot. Practice backing up. Lots of folks don't realize that when you turn a Rv the back end swings out a bit and you can hit something if your to close. Seen this happen a gas stations. As you are getting closer to your purchase feel free to ask questions on this page. Jim
Well if you have any doubt about the engine, transmission and brakes have a mechanic check it out, usually Rvs have low miles because they are used once maybe twice per year, take the rig on a nice long drive on the highway, listen carefully for unusual sounds, ruff shifting, ask the seller about when and if the brakes have been changed out. Brakes on a Rv should last a good long time since most of the miles are highway miles.I have over 70k on my Rv, it runs great. I can't stress this enough about the age of the tires as well. Best of luck to you, If you get a Rv let us know what you wound up with. If you have any questions about your rig please don't hesitate to ask here.
I know this is a after the fact but bottom line is for about $900 you should get a professional certified inspection which would cover all the item you reviewed, and the most critical items which are life safety issues. Carbon monoxide detector inspection, LP leak check, and detector working, also the inspection includes generator and coach engine oil analysis to check two of the largest cost items. You need to get on the roof and check all seals and caulking sealants, and are air conditioners loose, and covers secure and won,t fly off when driving down the road. This was a great kick the tires cosmetic basic helpful video, but seriously consider a professional inspection taking 8 hours, 80 to 100 pages of written report, and 100 to 200 pictures or videos.
Yep those are all true and serious items to consider, how ever I don't think its possible to pay a Rv tech for every coach. The items mentioned in this video would eliminate the bad coaches before getting a inspection on one you would consider. I really appreciate your comment, really good advice.
Hey Louis thanks for the comment. Anyway my coach has a 6 gallon Atwood water heater. Its both electric and Lp. The water heater in my unit is mounted underneath the bathroom sink area. Can I ask you what the issue might be with your water heater? A lot of problems with these water heater can be fixed with out getting a whole new unit.
Which older coaches have the greatest advances in tech. I’m buying a older used class A but does a 2002 have better tech than a 2001, etc. ? Any tips on the better built older coaches. Thx ...great content
As far as tech goes, you will have all the basics in a Older Rv. You will have to add new tech yourself, like solar panels, Tvs ect. its all fun to do yourself if your inclined.
Pro-tip: Go out and test RVs (and cars) on rainy days! Not only can you see how it performs in the worst conditions, but you also can see any leaks. Bonus: most places will be super slow on rainy days so they'll be fine with you taking your time (less pressure).
Is it difficult to add a back up camera in a 2000 REXHALL AERBUS? I also need to replace the starter on genex generator. If my son can change a starter in a truck is it simular?
I bought this coach praying I could give my husband some quality of life after spending time in hospital and being told he wasn't coming home. So now I bought this and I have fear of driving it.
Those are great questions, so I am not sure about the difficulty of the back up camera installation would be. You should probably have that installed by someone who knows what they are doing. There could be old wiring That runs through the coach. As far as the starter on the Genex, in some cases if the geny has easy access to the starter componants it should not be a hard fix. Boy Im a big help.
Well will take some getting used to. Best thing to do. Practice in a empty parking lot. Learn how the rig responds to breaking and steering. Go slow, get your back up camera fixed then practice backing up. Be careful pulling out of gas stations, the back end of class a sweep out farther than you think. I have seen folks side swipe gas pumps making a sharp turn while exiting. When backing up have a spotter with a two way radio, very helpful.
Thats great advice, the coach I have had a leaky window in the front and I did not know it. It was like that when I bought the Rv. The sellers put a trash can in front of the rotten wall and I did not notice it until about a week after I got it home. I fixed the leak in the window with new butyl tape then had to tear out the rotten wood. It was a pain in the back side to say the least. If I can help just one person with not having to go through that this channel is totally worth it. Anyway David thanks for the tip. Jim
Better yet, have a full inspection done by a professional. This will come with a written evaluation check list. And you can normally get a written estimate of the repair costs. Yes it does cost a fee for a professional to come and inspect an RV. But knowing exactly whats wrong and getting a realistic cost estimate is a sure way to negotiate a better price.
@@thisoldcoacheverythingrv2625 I think mate by takin, AL l your tips and precautions I will be able to make me decision in full , test ride is a biggin too !
You mentioned the shimmy while driving that was corrected by smoothing your tires. If the smoothing did not fix the shimmy, what other things could have caused the shimmy? Wheel balance? Alignment? What else?
>> I'd like to know what are the best brands of RVs to buy in older models--and to avoid. I hear Lazy Daze, Holiday Rambler, Free Spirit and Winnebago are good.
Only one issue so far and thats with the air filter. When you are driving through a heavy down pour the filter can get wet and cause the motor to lose power and hesitate. There is a upgrade you can buy that prevents the water from entering the filter. Other than that its been very reliable
How can i bargain if im getting it for free? 🤣😂 getting a 1994 allegro bay 36' bumper to bumper with 454 and probably a 4l80 4 speed. It has non structural front end damage to the fiberglass. Bumper is solid but bent up slightly. The 7000w onan runs like a dream and so does the 454. Roof is solid but window in rear driver's side leaked and split the vinyl, but the wood behind it seems good.
Take the leaking window off the Rv, replace the butyl tape Asap before more damage is done. Ez project, if it is a larger window its good to have a extra hand. Keep the roof clean, put a fresh coat of lap sealer over the caps and around the openings, check the age of the tires before going anywhere. Cant beat free, best of luck with your rig
My coach has a the gas Triton V10. Pros and cons. Diesels have a longer life, more expensive to maintain. They offer a quieter ride while you are driving down the road because the engine is in the back. Gas engines will be cheaper, they are easer to work on if you are a do it yourself kind of person, they are noisy in the cockpit especially when going up a steep grade. On hot drives the engine throws lots of heat can be uncomfortable for the driver at times. Diesel fuel is more expensive.
Thank you sir for very informative video. I am looking to buy my very first RV but not sure which one to buy or how much to spend... any guidance from you would be deeply appreciated.
I know some folks thought Darth Vader was the camera man. Glad you got some good info from the clip. Buying a Rv is a big investment and its good to know this info before your purchase
Hey Jim, thanks for the vid. looking at a 1999 Admiral HOLIDAY Rambler 30ft V10 Triton 79k with upgraded batteries, wood panel floors, just driven back from AK.$11,900. Owner just bought a 36ft 5th wheel for pem living. Any input?
There was another video said class C is better for reliability versus class A what are your thoughts? I'm looking to longer own a condo and live in one full time.
Would anybody know how I can sell my van? Recently, I have had some life changes & cannot use the van. I have a 2022 Ram Pro Master fully converted camper van with the works: hot water shower, AC, heater, 400 amp hours lithium, 300watts solar, fridge, induction stove stop etc., etc. Dealerships won't buy the van b/c any potential buyer won't be able to finance it through a bank. I am not looking to make a dime off the sale - only trying to re-coup what I paid for the van/conversion. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.
Here's a tip don't buy an RV...just get a hotel room rent a car and your there...stress free!! You like driving for long periods of time, staying in different places and seeing the country...Be a TRUCK driver!! That way you can make money at same time, roadside assistance is covered!!
I’d rather not pack a suitcase - unpack a suitcase - repack that suitcase and unpack it again when I get home. Instead I keep my rv clothes in the rv. I’d rather sleep in my clean rv bed on my clean sheets, instead of some bed bug ridden mattress that 3-4 dudes and/or dudettes just did a 3some or 4some 12 hours earlier and shot body fluids all over the place. I like cooking in my kitchen and using my clean dishes and such and not the same microwave that some crack dealer cooked his crack in 12 hours earlier. However, to each their own...

There is no debate, diesel is the only way to go, provided the engine size is compatible to the specifications of the overall unit.

New wires new plugs fluid changes all around. About to do the same thing with my couch toss it and get a new used one. struts and lower part of the door was rotted out had to replace that. Good information regarding RV shopping! The loud breathing was somewhat of a distraction (LOL), but still good information!
Thanks!
Sorry about the breathing. Darth Vader was the only camera guy that could film. Lol That was my son. Anyway glad you got some good info. If you have any questions regarding a Rv purchase would love to help.
Thanks man! I certainly will be in touch before I buy my RV.
Testing the Aux start is also good
That is true, I did try that. Thanks for the comment
Thank you for these tips. I am looking at various videos of RV's such as yours to learn as much as I can.
Well if you have any questions I would be happy to help
@@thisoldcoacheverythingrv2625 Thank you very much for responding back. I live in Winnipeg, Manitoba and have been looking at various RV's on Kijiji to see the pricing and makes and models. Quite fun looking at these. I came across on old 1975 Barth, a Beaver and Leo Craft motorhomes. I will just have to save some monies for a bit ( one year period) and then one year from now I show be more knowledgable in all these makes and models. Thank you again!
Awesome info. Appreciate you explaining what to look for when buying a used Class A 🙏🙏🙏
When you are checking for water intrusion, look down as well as up. If you see any black marks on the floor or if the floor is soft you have a real problem that will cost thousands to repair. Also, make sure you walk the roof looking for loose or bad caulking, soft spots etc.
Great advice.

Some generator issues are easily solved. Fuel pump, collapsed fuel line are just a few. Best of luck with your purchase

How to videos and some tools can save you thousands
Most class Cs do not have leveling jacks, standard with Class A
Cs are smaller and easer to park
A class more room, especially with a couple of slides
Class A can come with a Diesel pusher or a gas engine
Class A usually the drivers and passengers chairs turn around offering more seating in the main cabin area
Class C The drivers area is more like a van
Class A more storage underneath as well as inside
Class C will give you better fuel economy around 10 mpg
Class A 6 or 7 if you are going down hill with a tail wind lol
The view for the passengers through the front windows while traveling is much better in a class A
You can find Class As with a Washer and Dryer
Not to sure about a class C, but I don't think so.
Blessings
Jim
Ps if I think of anything else I will share it on this comment thread
Jim
@@thisoldcoacheverythingrv2625 Thanks Jim. I will hit you up with more questions.

Good, helpful info. Make sure the camera operator is aware of their breathing.
Was thinking maybe Darth Vader was filming it...
Luke, who's your father. Lol
Great advice!
Glad it was helpful!
What about checking the motor out in the trans brakes

I have a 1992 allegro bay, first time rv owner.i need to replace the hot water heater but I am not sure which is best for this rv
You can get those storage door struts 6 for $20 off amazon. (depending on weight capacity.
Thats a great deal, thanks for the info
Which older coaches have the greatest advances in tech. I’m buying a older used class A but does a 2002 have better tech than a 2001, etc. ? Any tips on the better built older coaches. Thx ...great content
I like the allegro bay. Its the only class A I have owned. With proper maintenance these coaches will last
As far as tech goes, you will have all the basics in a Older Rv. You will have to add new tech yourself, like solar panels, Tvs ect. its all fun to do yourself if your inclined.
Thank you , great info.!
Awesome hope it helped you.
Pro-tip: Go out and test RVs (and cars) on rainy days! Not only can you see how it performs in the worst conditions, but you also can see any leaks. Bonus: most places will be super slow on rainy days so they'll be fine with you taking your time (less pressure).
Excellent advice. Don't let them rush you into buying
Great video!
Thanks
Put X1R in your generator oil.
Helpful info, thank you.

How do you check the water in winter if coach is winterized?
Well you don't need to if there is no water. I am going to make a video on winterizing as well. Thanks for the comment

Where are you located now? You should do this check for a living. How much would you charge?
We are in the Nashville area
Good info. I would respectfully suggest you invest in a good wireless mic to use. The camera operator’s breathing was quite a distraction to me.
Sorry about that. We are learning on the fly.
You may want to check for delamination on exterior walls.
Thats a good point, not sure how to do that. What do you look for?
@@thisoldcoacheverythingrv2625 look for wavy walls on the outside, if don't look right it probably isn't right.
Thats a great idea, these are a few tips that you can do yourself before paying someone to do a inspection.

Alignment? What else?
Yes My dad had one when he bought it that really needed an alignment.
Thats pretty much it. Wheel bearings could be an issue. It drove me nuts until I had the wheels shaved.
>> I'd like to know what are the best brands of RVs to buy in older models--and to avoid. I hear Lazy Daze, Holiday Rambler, Free Spirit and Winnebago are good.

And this video is awesome, btw!
Glad you enjoyed it. I am going to be adding new videos soon
Thanks for the video I noticed your even has v10 motor the one I’m looking at to buy has one to what do you think Of it had any trouble with it
Only one issue so far and thats with the air filter.
@@thisoldcoacheverythingrv2625 thank you so much!
And remember if you're storing your RV with it plugged in the batteries are always charging and it tends to boil all the water out!
Ya you have to keep up with the coach batteries, distilled water.

Hi Jim, is your coach engine gas or diesel! What is your preference?
My coach has a the gas Triton V10. Pros and cons. Diesels have a longer life, more expensive to maintain. They offer a quieter ride while you are driving down the road because the engine is in the back. Gas engines will be cheaper, they are easer to work on if you are a do it yourself kind of person, they are noisy in the cockpit especially when going up a steep grade. On hot drives the engine throws lots of heat can be uncomfortable for the driver at times.
Diesel fuel is more expensive.
