I believe there are many that speak exquisitely with magnificent elegance. And many of those that do, owe a debt of gratitude to Joe for allowing those who wish to stand on his shoulders. IMHO :)
There are many who still speak in such an elegant and knowledgeable manner. Some are in the field of the sciences, of mathematics, of philosophy, etc.. Mr. Campbell was and will always be one of the most prominent purveyors and scholars of mythology who was able to reach the generations from his time to ours. Not saying that there weren’t other mythologists who were fundamental and the builders of the scholarly viewing of myths, just that Mr. Campbell spoke to us deeply for our time. Read his works since I was a teen and will always continue to visit his body of work throughout the years to come.
The way he gathered wisdom from everywhere he visited (physically and intellectually) and packaged it into the monomyth - the one above all - is a pivotal foundation of the One Tribe concept we all should adopt to ease the pain of this world. He didn’t crusade for it. He simply put it out there. He pointed out the stream to us. It is up to us to take the soul cleansing first sip from it.
Best comment in regard to Joseph Campbell's Monomyth. Yesterday I was sitting at my mother's kitchen table discussing Joseph Campbell with my 22 year old daughter. I gave her "The Hero's Journey" when she turned 20. We were also discussing the Giant Buddha's in Afghanistan, and those Giant Buddha's are an Archetype for your conscious. Every human is a Buddha, Joseph Campbell helped me embody this in my soul. It's not an other.
Really needed to hear this today. The man had an understanding that was a blend of all religions and cultures around the world... and they all tell the same story, just differently.
I related this term "Self-responsible authority" to acting in accordance with an "Honor System", to govern oneself and to maintain a disciplined order in a society.
@@CadeCYC Where could I see the whole interview?? Right now I am a full-time MSW grad student and have more than I need to read! Although I will purchase the book, but won't be able to get to it for a little while. Be cool to watch this entire conversation though. I use it as motivation for the school work! Thanks for the reply.
@@joshvanschaick4896 You should be able to go to Netflix and watch the full episode there. Netflix is where I first came across Moyers and Campbell, then I purchased the books and read them. Highly suggest you get "The Power of the Myth," don't wait. It's not hard to read, and you can open any page, you don't have to start at the beginning, however you will get sucked and want to absorb everything.
Bill Moyers is one of the most underrated and exceptional journalists ever. He is brilliant at what he does and has a moral compass that is unwavering. Rarely these days do you find a real journalist instead of a talking head without any real journalistic training or expertise. Moyers' questions are our questions and he knows how to dig deeper and deeper to get to the essence of an idea.
This is part of one of the best life changing series of 5 interviews ever . I am a great fan of both Joseph Campbell and Bill Moyers. Thanks for uploading it reminds me to watch them again.
I love his voice... but apart from that, Joseph is full on real gems and insights. I am so grateful for all these spiritual teachers who point us within.
The Power of Myth series should be required viewing at the college level. That's when I saw the documentary, and I feel like I was just old enough to be ready to hear these two wise men discussing these things, but also young enough to have many lessons and mistakes ahead of me where I could think back and say to myself, well, that part was in the Power of Myth and they were right. Now I'm in my 50s, and feeling like a major problem of the world is that too many of us don't really understand myths. Myths are not just wishful thinking or irrational delusion. They are the stories of what makes us a living part of this universe. Very scary due to contemplating physical death, but also gloriously beautiful because all of us have a completely unique experience of it.
I’m 54 and have had a messy, troubled life of successes and failures, a hard start that led me into so many misunderstandings and also miracles. I’ve lost all my friends to my choices and life courses and the love of my life died last year after surgery… I’m in a terrifying and beautiful solitude. But now I know: If you settle down just enough - past your regrets, attachments and hopes - you will find this palace of peace waiting for you. It is not boring or indifferent and it will carry you through whatever comes.
... I'm 80. At every age I have always looked for optimal positive substantive interaction. Interaction with everything.... this seems more healthy than conventional achievement, or gaining and holding a position in a hierarchy.

I love this man! I don’t know how my algorithm specifically got me here but I am so happy that this was suggested to me. I’m sure others feel the same. I’ve never been able to articulate my “religion” or beliefs in intelligent conversation, but he seems to package everything so nicely with a neat bow.
Googling--and buying Campbell's books--will tell you everything you need to know. These interviews that Moyers did with him back in the eighties were very important to me, as they were to many people who tuned in to the series on PBS.

There are many myths on how many make the passage and how one can make the passage but they don't say the requirements to pass. No one gets out of here alive and most don't get out of here in death.

He reminds me of Manly Hall. Genius minds.
This way of thinking and then being accordingly, is the best way to cure everything, and to evolve properly... Campbell was a true Western Master 🙏🔥!
It's cool how Bill Moyers takes it all in with the wonderment of a child learning how everything is connected for the first time.
Great comment, he's enjoying time.
So great.
I remember watching such interviews on TV as a child. I was mesmerized then as I am now.
"Self responsible authority " what the world needs
it was a great choice of words to me too, how he didnt say "independence" but said instead, "self responsible authority". it was great
