If you know about the history of Top 40 radio, then you know the name Gordon McLendon. McLendon was the owner of 1190 KLIF, and was considered the man who perfected Top 40 radio on KLIF. In 1954, the era when network radio was fading away because of TV, McLendon introduced the Top 40 format to the station and, as a result of this change, KLIF enjoyed dominance of the Dallas radio ratings in the 1950s, 1960s, and into the 1970s. At one point, more than half of the people listening to the radio in Dallas, were listening to KLIF! KLIF had a tight playlist, exciting promotions & contests, and bigger than life DJs. Some of the legendary personalities that worked at KLIF include... Jimmy Rabbitt, Paxton Mills, Michael O'Shea, Dick Heatherton, Chuck Murphy, Ron Chapman, Johnny Dark, Hal Martin, Rod Roddy, Cizzin Lennie, Brant Miller, John London, Randy Robbins, Russ Knight, Jim O'Brian, Chuck Dunaway, Ken Knox, George Michael, Deano Day, Gary Mack, Jay Lawrence,Gary Owens, and the voice heard on this aircheck, Charlie Van Dyke.
Van Dyke’s radio resume reads like a list of legendary radio stations across the country. CKLW Detroit, KFRC San Francisco, WLS Chicago, WDGY Minneapolis, WRKO Boston, and KHJ & KRTH Los Angeles. Charlie was very young when he landed his first major market gig, at KLIF. In this aircheck, he is only 19 years old. You can tell at this age, he’s destined for big things in radio, and eventually TV voice over work.
Feel free to check out some of the many other videos on the Ellis B Feaster's Radio Channel! Established in 2008!
One of You Tube's oldest RADIO AIRCHECK MUSEUM with a NEW VIDEO posted daily at 3PM EST.
After over 40 years working on the radio, I have recorded lots of radio airchecks, and many from my friends as well.
You'll find audio of many radio personalities who have passed away. Lots radio recordings from the 1940s, through the 2010.
We also talk about radio broadcasting. If you happen to have classic airchecks, maybe even of yourself on the air, we'd love to share it here!
We also share videos about Travel & Cruising. I share tips on how I travel cheaply, so you can do it also! Find me on Facebook: / ellisairchecks

The KLIF bumper sticker (above) was from the '76-77 era when Big Jim Davis was Program Director. Line up included Charlie Van Dyke, Harry Nelson, Me, Randy Robbins, Cat Simon and Cousin Lenny. "KLIF 1190 Where It's Good Again"

The newscaster is Frank Haley, one of my instructors in broadcasting school in 1966. I recently contacted him on social media to see if he remembered me. He didn't.

Great stuff! When I was in bible college in the 90's I drove over to see the 'Triangle Building' they used to occupy. All it's glory was gone by then of course but it was still great to see a piece of history. I knew Jim O'Brien was there but I didn't know (or maybe I forgot) that George Michael and Randy Roberts were there! Good times for Boss Jocks!
