“Optimism is a strategy for making a better future. Because unless you believe that the future can be better, you are unlikely to step up and take responsibility for making it so.” Noam Chomsky
@Underwater Laser I understand this observation's intent. Still, one has to qualify what is meant by "better". Remember that Hitler was doing what he himself thought was "better" for Germany, which had a 95 percent participation rate in their Nazi Party. The same with Lenin, who starved 6 million Ukrainians to death. Same with Stalin, who murdered over 60 million of his fellow countrymen. Same with Mao, the evil leader of China, who slaughtered over 100 million of HIS own countrymen, all under the banner of marxism/socialism/communism. So one has to instead observe what is the nature of what someone wishes to bring into existence, and its effects, rather than simply allowing the idea of "working toward what's better". The very worst nightmares of the 20th century, amassing over 185 million corpses, were all begun under the nebulous idea of "making the world better".
@Carlos Saraiva as with everything in life, balance is important. That goes for optimism and pessimism, a balance of the two usually ends in reality. Balance is crucial to existence.

@@stevechester3504 Sorry to disappoint you, but the 0.1% isn't happier than people who already have everything they need to have the basics covered and be safe, etc. with some good financial freedom (let's say top earners in the middle class in western societies, some western societies even at lower incomes). But you also underestimate how much better people are off on average around the world (think: China, India, Bangladesh, Africa, etc. have made huge strides from almost nothing to doing OK).

It's not about being divisive, theres 7.7 billion people sucking resources out of this earth, all the human rights crimes, rivers that run with chemicals in other country's. And this guy is stupid our culture has been based on burning carbon for way longer than 30 years so another 30 and were going to be carbon neutral? HAHAAHAHAHAHAA
@@JordanJank Hydrothermal liquefaction has been around for over 40 years. Even if we stuck to carbon, we know how to produce it from any organic slurry, including petrochemical, circulating at 3000psi and 300c in a thermal pressure pipe. Only government subsidies make it cheaper to pump from the ground. The only reason you dont hear about it is government suppression since it emerged, and the threat it presents to the oil industry. (You can make a setup for it at home for a couple hundred bucks, which would destroy the industry.) And the process is carbon negative so long as you are producing and sequestering more than you burn.
Dude, there needs to be more content on this website like this. Not that we should hear nothing but the positive, but you do a great job of being skeptical but also optimistic when it's appropriate. Too many people are either purely cynical or purely happy-go-lucky. And I really appreciate you showing both sides of things. It's not easy, but it's worth it.

ScienceGuy me also but oddly o still knew what was going on I don't have a social group I don't work I'm almost housebound but I got a sort of RSS feed to my Brain of major news it finds you
I agree, social media is poison. That said, to expand on @Rod Schmidt and @Cornelius Corcoran : find a news outlet from a foreign nation whose perspective you respect. Read how they comment on your nation's current events. It filters well for intra-cultural biases.
Escapism? Not good, especially for a Science Guy. What happens in the country and in the world affects science, and ultimately your life. You must know from where the blows are coming, and if you value anything besides of yourself (children, ecology, culture, justice), you need to know what's happening so you can put your effort into it. At least, to vote for the greater good. Or the lesser evil.

35 years ago my friends mom asked me why I don't do any homework... My answer was always, "for what, that non existent future?"... Well... was I wrong... !!
When I was in high school my dad started asking me how my astronomy classes were going. I was confused by the question, but my grades were not that great, so in order to avoid the topic, I would just say that they were fine. Then one day, after he asked me how my astronomy classes were going for the 6th or 7th time, I decided to ask him what he was talking about. He said, "Well, your teachers keep calling me to say that you are taking up space in school." ;-) hehehe
“You might be able to set a carbon capture system out in your backyard”. So... a tree. You can sell wood as fuel, too. Plus it has the bonus that it adds aesthetic value, and can even make useful products like maple syrup, nuts, or fruit, at the same time.
This statement reminds me of all the clowns preaching about aquaponics. I think to myself you know thats how natural ecosystems work right. Maybe if we still lived with nature, instead of worshipping the almighty economy we wouldn't have to fix problems caused by our own way of life in the first place.

im also a generally optomistic person and i feel like the future will go on one end of the two extremes- a dystopian apocalyptic nightmare or a green, generally fair and happy society and with all the negative stuff thats happening and the fact that thats all people talk about make it really hard to stay optimistic but this video made me literally tear up bc you are so genuinely excited and optimistic for the future and a whole video of just good things made me so happy- it would be really cool to see another kind of video like these two, the negatives and positives with us easing out of the pandemic and the new developed technology.
sorry for the text block, you are really cool and i wish you the best for 2023 :)
After 2019 feeling like such a horrible year this is the video I think we all needed to hope for a positive future. I've literally just subscribed 2 day's again I have been watching non stop since 😂 I really think your content is so great and thanks for the positive video.
The "I didn't know I could be this happy!" part made my day! Thanks for being awesome! Happy New Year!
I love ur regular content. I like getting new information, getting new insight, not just on specific topics, but stuff i never knew about. Vids like this are awesome, like the 2 sides to a coin. Probably not as often as your regular content, but as a well deserved dessert once in a while. Still remember the vid from u to the future, that was so refreshing and enlightening.
And here's to you Joe. Wishing you and your family all the happiness for the 2020‘s. Your videos are awesome and I appreciate the sharing of information you have researched
Big luv to you Joe. You improve my life man
Thanks Joe. Cheers from east Texas. Love your work. Keep it up. Was kind of a downer last week, but that was the intent, I think. I'm very optimistic about our future as well. Thanks again.
Dan G props for being optimistic, especially living in Texas 😬
I accidentally hit dislike on your comment while scrolling and panicked thinking first, that you'd know someone dislikes it and second that I hit dislike on a comment I might like. Turns out, I forgot that people have no idea how many dislikes they get for comments and I DO like your comment. Just thought I'd share.
Cheers from Shreveport Dan! Don’t find too many people on RUclips from our corner of the world
Joe, I've had a particularly rough last few weeks, your optimism has been really helpful. Thank you. Happy New Year!
Love everything you do Joe, with all the negativity we face day to day it's nice to see all the positive swings happening in the world, it definitely feels like we may be witnessing a big turning point for mankind. Hope we see even more positive change at an even faster rate in the coming decade.
I really enjoyed your optimistic outllook toward 2020 at the end of 2019. Little did we know...may it serve as a small reminder to count our blessings while we have them, and stay positive. Thank you Joe Scott, I am a fan of your work.
Joe Scott - at 15:35 . . . the last couple of years since I've been doing this full time . . . I didn't know I could be this happy.
Thank you for thanking us - you *_are_* doing a great job. We really like you.
I guess if last week’s video was the penultimate then this must be the Ultimate Joe Scott video. Happy New Year
I’m gonna come back in ten years and watch this to see if any of this happens
Some of them will happen in maybe half that time which would also be very cool.
Me too! I predict that a decade will have passed! Safe!! :D LOL.
We love you Joe. It's been such a great year discovering you and your vids.
Joe Scott: I am optimistic about the future
COVID-19: “I’m about to ruin this mans whole career”
I think the future will be amazing for the top 0.1% and crappy for the bottom 99.9% but I think most of the bottom 99.9% will be happy for the top 0.1% because of how good it will be for them. Only the resentful people are screwed
Easily one of the best channels on RUclips ! Thanks Joe for all your hard work and awesome content over both of your channels and the Podcast. I have learned so much from you over the years and I can't wait for more :D Happy new year :)
"I do really love you guys" damnit Joe. I didn't come here to cry. *Wipes a tear*
Seriously though... Happy New year Joe
Just tell me everything's gonna be alright Joe...

I'm not crying! You're crying!! Such a wholesome message Joe! Love the energy, compassionate spirit, and your zest for life! Happy 2020!! 😊✌🏼🌟🌠
you didn't only give me a smile, you gave me a little bit of hope, and I can't state how precious that is
Watched this video on a particularly dark day. Much needed, appreciated and well timed. Joe, don't stop doing your thing.

Morning coffee and answers with Joe. Great way to start the day
Have a great year Joe! You re doing a great job! You re a great entertainer and science communicator! Best wishes for the next decade!
I love you dude, and really am addicted to your videos but you do have to chuckle at the timing of this just before the apocalypse...
Keep up the good work Joe. We gotta have faith.
Got teary eyed with you thanking your watchers. We thank YOU. You teach me more than any teacher I've ever had and knowledge is absolutely priceless. Keep up the good work, you wholesome you! 🙌🏻 (yes, I know this video is a little old, haha)
I needed this positivity
Same, monday morning and I'm feeling the drag. This really picked up my spirits.
Don't get too high though. Capitalism will kill our society, if we cannot overcome it. Because it is the root and replicator of all our big problems. In spite of the intent of some well meaning investors, they are still bound by the profit motive and nothing can be funded, if the economy is collapsing.

I love your channel. It’s so educational and i personally love that you don’t point out just your opinions, but you also go into depth to the opposite side .

Thank you Joe! When I can no longer take looking at the latest miserable news, I have you. Always interesting, always funny, just a very cool regular guy who lets his curiosity lead him where it may!

I can't thank YOU enough for all the knowledge and laughter you've given me

Thank YOU Joe. Please don't stop your fantastic work, you are an inspiration.
I love hearing the “I love you u “ part I say it all the time but to hear it from you makes it better and it makes you more humanized and less robotic…. Thanks man love ya.!?
To summarize the last two videos: "We'll fix this mess, or we'll die trying."

Narrator: It was hard, but eventually, things ended up okay.
As soon as you said "I think we're all tired of the divisiveness" I DESTROYED that like button.
(You can make a setup for it at home for a couple hundred bucks, which would destroy the industry.)
And the process is carbon negative so long as you are producing and sequestering more than you burn.
Peace on earth and good will to all...we love you Joe....please keep on speaking from your heart....best wishes to all in the year 2020.

I’ve been off social media for years and that wasn’t good enough to put me in a good mental state. I realized I also had to stop reading the news which I stopped reading in September.
I agree, but probably good to read a news summary from two opposite media sources about once a month.
ScienceGuy me also but oddly o still knew what was going on I don't have a social group I don't work I'm almost housebound but I got a sort of RSS feed to my Brain of major news it finds you
@@corneliuscorcoran9900 Best to read news about a country you've never heard of
I agree, social media is poison.
Staying away from social media makes me happy.
I appreciate your practical way of looking at things, I follow some channels that get kinda "out there"..😅 but you always take an educated, grounded and humourous view of things and it's refreshing 😊
Congratulations on your happiness and thanks for sharing it with us. This was nice and needed thank you, again.
This is exactly the title I needed to see today.
The greatest 2 things the USA have contributed to the world is space exploration and jazz. Glad to hear space is back.

A year late watching ...but super happy to have found your channel!
35 years ago my friends mom asked me why I don't do any homework...
My answer was always, "for what, that non existent future?"...
Well... was I wrong... !!
Oh, oh. You're gonna make Greta mad.
My dog ate my home work...
You know...? You can actually read your sentence in two different meanings ^^ :)
I'm glad you're my internet neighbor!
“You might be able to set a carbon capture system out in your backyard”. So... a tree. You can sell wood as fuel, too. Plus it has the bonus that it adds aesthetic value, and can even make useful products like maple syrup, nuts, or fruit, at the same time.
That's terrific. You can spend 20 years growing your tree and collect fitty bucks at the end of it. Pure profit, baby!
This statement reminds me of all the clowns preaching about aquaponics. I think to myself you know thats how natural ecosystems work right. Maybe if we still lived with nature, instead of worshipping the almighty economy we wouldn't have to fix problems caused by our own way of life in the first place.
@@chrism8180 okay chris
@@chrism8180 the big advantage as far as I can see with aquaponics, etc. is that it's a closed ecosystem so you have very little decease and very low usage of fresh water.

I am really relieved to see this video today. My anxiety has been in overdrive recently and this made me feel better.
Awe Joe. Got me to mist a bit a the end. I only recently started supporting you because I honestly did not respect RUclips to have information on the type of subjects I was earnestly seeking helpful explanations of. l only found your channel at the beginning of the year. It was your double slit experiment video that hooked me. I had an understanding of what the answer might already be and your explanation cut through a lot of painful overthinking and helped me to confirm some truths that I was looking for. Thank you sir.
My favorite video after that is your perfect old fashion video. And that is why humans are AMAZING. Thanks for the hard work and don't forget the chair spinning thing. The audience needs that stuff to connect or disconnect from the hard subjects your continue to cover.
