personally believe that steinbeck uses slim being pragmatic to show that even the best of people in the 1930s had to make tough decisions due to the political and economic climate of the time being so harsh and unforgiving - he has to make tough decisions as he is aware of the other possibilities if he doesnt
Slim is a very influential figure to me, I consider him to be one of my heroes.. it’s chilling how this story of the past fits in with skilled trades. My foreman started calling me slim.. I’ve been called a lot of things and had many nicknames that don’t stick, I hope this one does.
Slim contrasts with Boss and Curley. He is a natural leader and a moral character, which emphasises the Boss’ and Curley’s artificial power and their cruel nature in comparison. Through Slim, who represents the idealised American cowboy, Steinbeck wants to stress how capitalism goes against the natural order of things where cruel men with no natural talent (Boss and Curley) are at the top of the hierarchy.
