Link losing his shadow only for it to manifest as his active and tangible alter ego in this has to be one of the coolest little twists I've come across in story-telling. That said, Shadow Link and Dark Link are two separate entities.

I never thought she would actually say such a thing, but I had been thinking something along the lines of a proper villain monologue at the end of a thrilling cat-and mouse adventure like: "Yes, it's true. The mysterious 'bad guy' who has been one step ahead of you this whole time is your clone. I'm glad that my henchmen were able to capture you alive and bring you to my chambers. You were able to survive this long because I didn't want you dead. Have you ever played the game -- thought experiment really -- where you decide what you would do if you met another version of yourself? But what am I saying? Of course you have! I'm you, and you're me! Now, give us a kiss!"

Is esseJ being "wilder" than Jesse a nod to Quantum Break? I'm pretty sure it's a nod to Quantum Break. Also, in the Xbox bonus content for Tomb Raider: Underworld, Lara actually frees her doppelgänger from Natla's control and grants her free will, meaning that there are possibly two kickass adventurers raiding tombs in that particular Tomb Raider universe. Speaking of saving your doppelgänger, it's too bad Shepard doesn't get to save their clone. Imagine Reapers being all: "There's two of them now? You know what? @@robertagu5533 I don't think bowser is a secret good guy. The reason the dark star copied bowser was mainly do to convenience and the fact that bowser is incredibly powerful.
Mario Land 2 where Mario fights the more evil and cruel version of himself, Wario, in a terrible fight to the death... before inviting him periodically to tennis or karts.
The moment I got my hands on the asynchronicity suit in Control, I knew - this will be the outfit for the new Director. Prince of Persia: The two thrones - you have to fight your sand clone with the whip in his arm - the version of you, that was better at fighting and platforming, because of said whip.
It might just be me, but I found the esseJ fight very tough. My 'strategy' ended up revolving around hiding in the upstairs room full of monitors, and peeking out to bombard her with explosives. Not exactly Jesse's most heroic victory, but I'll take it. Especially for that superb alternate costume.
@@timothyoswald8618 can't agree, killing Dagoth Ur in Morrowind and the implication of destroying The Heart of Lorkhan, which was what gave Vivec and the rest of the Tribunal their power, if far, far, more interesting then just completing a ritual that lets you become Sheogorath. I mean one lets you become a daedric prince, which could be argued are god-like, while the other lets you kill what are effectively three, you would believe four until you find you that one kill themselves already, other literal god tier beings, I mean you don't actually kill Dagoth Ur in the fight you only kill him by destroying The Heart of Lorkhan. Hell, you are literally turned back into Sheogorath by the time Skyrim happens, so you could really argue that he simply transferred his power yo long enough to actually free Jyggalag and then he just took over your body by invading your mind.
Infamous: The final mission is a battle against Kessler the main baddy for the whole game. During this battle you find out that he is you from the future and came back to make Cole stronger but he did kill your girlfriend which means he killed his girlfriend which is pretty messed up.
I think the real question about clone Shepard is “Was it really necessary to rip off the scene from The Mummy Returns?” You know the one. Rick and Imhotep dangling from a ledge. Rick’s loved ones come to pull him up while Ankh-su-namun walks away. Depressed at being unloved, Imhotep lets go and falls to his death. Did they think no one would notice?
Bioware has a thing with the Mummy it seems. Look at Inquisition, Solas is basically looks like Imhotep. I had to look up if he was played by Arnold Vasloo just in case.
@@razgriz821 - Aside from him being bald, I can’t say I see the resemblance. I definitely knew it wasn’t Arnold Vosloo doing the voice. I’ve seen The Mummy and the Darkman movies too many times.
Luke and Ellen had a discussion in which 'don't beat yourself up' was giggled over as an imagined literal scenario. Later, this video was born as a way to shoehorn in that (admittedly magnificent) pun.
What about your "clone" in Saints Row 4? Well, technically it's just a generic character with an added goatee, but Asha thinks it is a cooler version of you.
You end up fighting two versions of yourself. First is your clone from Saint's Row 1. Second is Saint's Row 2 and, for whatever reason, comes with its own clone Kinzie describes with: "Oh no! It's the player 2 character!"
@@azuredragoon2054 I forgot about those. I was thinking of Ashas mission. I think you end up fighting a default version of yourself from each game, with Asha's being the final "boss".
I'm so glad to see you folks back in the studio! Also, am I the only one who didn't notice the lack of reflection on link after he passes the island in the water temple until about maybe 2 years ago? When I think it was mentioned in another Oxtra video?
Not strictly fighting "yourself" but Skyrim has you fighting the first Dragonborn. Miraak, in the DLC, and also a very high level hero in the Ebony Warrior...
In Devil May Cry 3 you fought a shadow version of your Devil Trigger called the Doppleganger and after the fight you gained the ability to summon a Doppleganger which mirrored your actions, a rather neat easter egg also let a second controller control them while they're out.
I was always a fan of the Wellspring of Truth map from Fire Emblem Awakening. Using my high level, max stats team to breeze through most enemies and then getting kicked right in the teeth when my trusted companions' doppelgangers emerge like a bunch of immortal juggernauts.
Objection: The fight between me and clone Shepherd was canonically, Evil vs More Evil, with me being the More Evil one. And therefore I was the cooler one, as evidenced by my dance moves through all three games.
I'm surprised you didn't include Kessler from Infamous. Definitely cooler than your bike messenger character, stronger for most of the game, and has time travel abilities, and so very satisfying when you finally fry the bastard with lightning and then realize that he was an alternate version of you trying to get you ready to fight a worse villain.
Anyone know if any games with good and evil moral alignments ever had a boss where you fight the opposite version of your character, so an evil character would fight their good version? Not only would that be kinda neat as a concept but would finally allow us to be the clearly cooler evil version, and being the evil version of yourself just isn’t worth it unless you can rub it in the face of the good version
Well, you'll fight Sonic (alongside a G.U.N. mech) as a final boss for an evil ending in Shadow the Hedgehog, although there's no evil counterpart to a heroic Shadow.
You don't fight them, but in one of The Old Republic stories - the Sith Warrior one - an opposite alignment vision turns up to tell you how much you suck.
The Shepard clone part where they were both dangling odd the Normandy was cut from the Mummy Returns lol 😂. My first thought was - Imohtep going; “Anaksenamun, Semooii! Semooii! (Save Me! Save Me!”) and she ditches him only to die in a pit of scarabs. Lol
I might have something to contribute here: in the N64 game with which I certainly spent more time than did I with any other, 'Body Harvest'; unbeknownst to the player, the opening cinematic was in fact an augury to the coming story. Specifically, our hero is cloned, and this new evil plays counter to the player throughout the campaign. Culmination by game's end sees your clone finally reveal his true nature, before transforming into a great and beastly nemesis. Also, his black suit and bright red visor owned that of the player character. A cheat code permitted the player to have it too.
I'm sorry. Clone Shepard was an irredeemable prat. Even though I tried to save her at the end of the battle, it was in the full knowledge that she was irredeemably a prat. (Also, Samus and the SA-X for the follow-up list. That alien parasite was terrifying!)
Like you would handle waking up with no memories , the knowledge your existence is as nothing more than a back up plan at best and spare parts at most, and only having six months to come to terms with all of that.
@@clothar23 Those are extremely good points and I did have to stop and take a long look at myself after reading them. However, I'd like to imagine that at the very least I'd think something along the lines of, 'Six months of life is all I'm gonna get if someone doesn't sort out these reapers; probably not the best moment to try and murder the one person who seems capable of doing so.' And possibly, 'Do I really want to kill and replace the person who holds the record for Hardest Job In The Galaxy?' Actually it's a real shame that the designers didn't make more of an effort to show the side of things you're talking about in the character's personality. Some actual feeling might have helped to alleviate the bizarrely out of place Americentric slapstick sitcom in the middle of the game about 10 million humans dying every day.
What? No mention of fighting your Doppelganger in "Afro Samurai"? That duel was epic. And Samuel L. Jackson as your story guide was equally epic...and hilarious.
Don’t forget about Terranort at the end of Terra’s story is KH BBS? It wasn’t until the third death until I realized I was screwed as he was literally me and had all the commands I had equipped at the time, INCLUDING healing ones AND Shotlocks.
After watching the control section did anyone else get flashbacks to that SOTWE challenge where Luke played classic game dialogue backwards? Some say Ellen is still annoyed about not getting the Skyrim "Fus Ro Dah"😋
My favorite clone story arc was in City of Heroes. Both the heroes and villains side of the game got a clone arc around level 20, but the villain one was much more enjoyable to me (not that the heroes one wasn't). I wouldn't put it on this list, though, because the point is that you are the biggest and the baddest, and take over the clone lab to perfect the process and make an army of clones of yourself. During the trial and error stage, however, after dealing with a few defective clones, you get to have a massive clone battle, fighting up to 8 copies of yourself. So much fun!
The Kingdom Hearts series has a number of bosses that would fit this category such as Terra-Xehanort from Birth by Sleep, his design is more edgy and cooler than the Terra you play as.

Mario Land 2 where Mario fights the more evil and cruel version of himself, Wario, in a terrible fight to the death... before inviting him periodically to tennis or karts.
Wario isn't Mario's evil self. Dude's just a prick in general.

Lol definitely got to love the puns that are littered throughout these games.
this is an incredible home-recreation of that studio set up you normally have, ellen.
The moment I got my hands on the asynchronicity suit in Control, I knew - this will be the outfit for the new Director.
Prince of Persia: The two thrones - you have to fight your sand clone with the whip in his arm - the version of you, that was better at fighting and platforming, because of said whip.
Still waiting for that A.W.E. expansion.

@@timothyoswald8618 I haven't been to play two of the first 5 but out of the 3 I have I completely agree
As much as Skyrim is way more well known these days, we can all agree that Morrowind and Oblivion are still worth it these days.
Commenter Edition: The Shivering Isles, where The Champion fights a shadow clone and cheese for no one is just as good, if you don't like cheese.
And then forgetting to remove your chameleon enchanted items so lucky you, now you have to fight an invisible clone!

Great to see Kingdoms of Ellenmur back again, what a treat!
As someone who's never played a Rachet and Clank game before, I was genuinely caught off guard by that funeral joke
Infamous:
The final mission is a battle against Kessler the main baddy for the whole game. During this battle you find out that he is you from the future and came back to make Cole stronger but he did kill your girlfriend which means he killed his girlfriend which is pretty messed up.
It was a worthy sacrifice if it means the defeat of The Beast

First Kingdom Hearts had you pitted against a tricksy Shadow Sora in a claustrophobic room of a ship.
even in Godhand there's an evil counterpart "Devil hand". He's cool, have same powers and is badass.
This was just an excuse for Ellen to talk about Kingdoms of Amalur again wasnt it...
When at the end ellen called me cool i nearly cried 😭😭😭😭 thanks ellen

esseJ was such a fun find when you’re exploring Control. Had no idea she was “much wilder than you” though.

The goatee and eyepatch make them cooler no matter what
You end up fighting two versions of yourself. First is your clone from Saint's Row 1. Second is Saint's Row 2 and, for whatever reason, comes with its own clone Kinzie describes with: "Oh no! It's the player 2 character!"
Ahh. The Boss’s evil twin: Big Boss.
Ellen, we really didn't need to see a chair enough for you to go break the heart of our beloved throne, by using another.
I was always a fan of the Wellspring of Truth map from Fire Emblem Awakening. Using my high level, max stats team to breeze through most enemies and then getting kicked right in the teeth when my trusted companions' doppelgangers emerge like a bunch of immortal juggernauts.
Objection:
The fight between me and clone Shepherd was canonically, Evil vs More Evil, with me being the More Evil one. And therefore I was the cooler one, as evidenced by my dance moves through all three games.
I think that the Rival in 'Spartan: Total Warrior' Achilles' tomb was pretty cool
What about 7 towns that are in every game?
You know, like the snowy town or the village in the middle of a giant tree?
The desert town, treetoptown, Rocky village, ghosts town...
The lava kingdom, underwater lost city and dark castle of the main villain
Been done on Outside Xbox, albeit as a 'level in every game' video.
At thr others -- also ice/snow level.
Desert towns a traditional add-on in every town-specific game.
Did they ever make a game of the Shattered Glass Transformers stuff?
Well, you'll fight Sonic (alongside a G.U.N. mech) as a final boss for an evil ending in Shadow the Hedgehog, although there's no evil counterpart to a heroic Shadow.
You don't fight them, but in one of The Old Republic stories - the Sith Warrior one - an opposite alignment vision turns up to tell you how much you suck.
Fable 3's DLC. Final boss literally becomes you but is bad if you're good and vice versa
InFAMOUS
The Shepard clone part where they were both dangling odd the Normandy was cut from the Mummy Returns lol 😂.
My first thought was - Imohtep going; “Anaksenamun, Semooii! Semooii! (Save Me! Save Me!”) and she ditches him only to die in a pit of scarabs. Lol
No mention of SA-X? And I also have to agree with Sean D about the Shivering Isles.
I was hoping for SA-X. It’s better too, because Samus has an inherit weakness to your old weaponry, making those stealth segments much scarier.
You forgot "The legend of Spyro"'s iconic alter ego Dark Spyro!
Who'd have thought, the Normandy also gets stuck in traffic.
Clone Shep made me think of toy story and the buzz light-years going " im buzz light-years; no I'M Buzz light-year".
Or how about infamous, where Cole literally fights evil Cole (relatively speaking)
I went into detail on it, so now there is no mistake on what we're both talking about.
Every Marvel Villian be like: "It's not link. He's bad guy!"

If you make a second one Samus could be there for you again, this time with the parasite evil clone SA-X
Gonna have to mention Evoland, where in the Legend of Zelda-themed part of the game, you rescue a princess from a dark version of yourself. :P
However, I'd like to imagine that at the very least I'd think something along the lines of, 'Six months of life is all I'm gonna get if someone doesn't sort out these reapers; probably not the best moment to try and murder the one person who seems capable of doing so.' And possibly, 'Do I really want to kill and replace the person who holds the record for Hardest Job In The Galaxy?'
Actually it's a real shame that the designers didn't make more of an effort to show the side of things you're talking about in the character's personality. Some actual feeling might have helped to alleviate the bizarrely out of place Americentric slapstick sitcom in the middle of the game about 10 million humans dying every day.
@@samthompson1804 I can agree with that. The whole clone thing was a great concept that could have been better executed.

I'm surprised at the lack of a "Quit hitting yourself" joke. (Though the don't beat yourself up is a close second)
Oh the first game I think about is Custom Robo Arena. Also Dob vs Evil Dob.
