Just wanted to give everyone a heads up! - While this tutorial still works great for Blender 2.79, if you are using Blender 2.8 I have a new updated tutorial here: ruclips.net/video/5ZpGpfQjzJA/видео.html
I saw this video when I was little and THIS is actually what inspired me to be a VFX artists and I'm still doing it till this day hoping to get into a studio, I doubt anyone will see this but thanks for the inspiration man:)
I have done a decent amount of green screening in Blender. I did not know what or how to use the garbage or core setting on the keying node. Now because of you and this excellent tutorial I do. Thank you very much for this tutorial.
Dude really? you make all these videos that say "Blender tutorial" . Then you spend 1/2 the time talking about Adobe or something and how you have to change the keys around in blender to fit your style and be like "after affects." You make a video (20 minutes long) on the same subject that leaves viewers scratching there head and saying "wtf". Now 6 months later your like, "thanks Blender Steve for teaching me about green screening." Here's a free tip, to make Blender tutorial keep it about Blender (not other programs). Oh, and it helps to know what your talking about.
Great video, short yet detailed enough to give a good idea of how to work with masks and chromakeying. Question though --- is there a way of using the compositor nodes for keying in conjunction with the video sequence editor?
Posted this a few times already in the comments, Just connect an Alpha Over node to the end of your nodes, and connect your background image in the top slot. Voila!
Very useful. I had been struggling with green screen and had no idea that this quality was possible. (I had been running the raw footage directly into a green keying node and couldn't figure out why there was no 'garbage matte' node available.) I had no idea that you could create a tracking matte as a mask. So many hidden places in Blender.
Thankyou for responding so quickly!! I had my actor jump off of a bed that had a green-screen over it. We just need to key in our behind footage. With the nodes I'm already using, what would be the nodes I want to use to key out the green and bring in my background image?
YFTS ! If your shot was locked down on a tripod, you can just use an Alpha Over node and connect your character after green screened to the bottom socket, and your background to the top socket.
Oh girl this video got me shooketh because girl I tried to make this video, it didn't work, but girl I persisted, look at me now. I am Beyonce of all technology. I liked this video so I put a ring on it.
If the green screen you want to remove is an extra helping you in a morph suit (say you're doing a martial arts battle and want to look like you're jumping on air), then can you use the whole clip as a mask to do the same? (Using a still shot of your scene without the actors as the fill)
Are you using any Plugins? because your Keying-Node has WAY more options than mine, one of them is Matte inputs (I only have a Matte output) and Feathering.
Once your footage is masked and Chroma keyed, you can drop any background behind it with the alpha over node. Then just render it out as a quicktime animation.
I think I din't explained myself well. In Video editing mode I have full control of transitions, positioning and so on. I wonder how to use a "un-green" screen with others imagens, movies, audio as a part of the clip, like VSDC Editor, for example.
I found a workaround. I've created a file in blender to remove the green background and then I save the video with an alpha channel. Then I import the modified video in blender ina new project and it behaves as a regular video. I hope next versions of blender makes this process easier.
Hi CG GEEK, pls is it possible to light up a greenscreen to generate shadow or is it possible to get the shadow of a green screen object when u light it in blender? Thanks
Mono Background here is the video that I did with your footage and great tutorial if there is some mistake about publishing please tell me for anybody who cannot key the man please see your fps that set in render property select the one that match the video for this video I set at 29.97 (so I got this problem in the first time) so I will try more and practice on my own work later respected
hey brow, I need a help, I'm looking to creating a stop motion animation with toys, but I was thinking use green screen on stop motion then use another software to create the background scenery, so how could I take stop motion animation in green screen and import to blender the in blender create the background scenery to stop motion animation, so le't try simplify the question, take the stop motion animation done in green screen import to the blender then in the blender create the scenery, could help me how could I do it please, thanks. PS: I would like to know what tools on the blender I should use to create the scenery for the stop motion animation ( the stop motion would be made using toys, like spiderman, super man etc....
Thanks for taking the time to share this! I made sure to watch the ads so you'd get something back for your kindness. I learned a great deal - one wish-comment. There were several times when you didn't say which shortcut key you were using to make things happen on the screen. For example, moving and rotating the mask - I went out and searched the internet for some time without much success and finally thought, I'll just watch ahead and hope he tells us later. Sure enough - you did go on later to say "A" for select all and "G" for move. Then, still later, you explained "R" for rotate. I know those shortcuts are probably so second nature to you that you likely don't even think about doing it anymore, but it would be a HUGE help if you'd make sure to let us in on those shortcuts too. Again - thanks so very much for these tutorials!!!
Stupid question, but... I've been trying to render a greenscreened clip while still keeping other clips in the video editor timeline... is that possible? I feel like I'm overlooking something really obvious...
Hi small thought of camera tracking. I saw somebody using HTC Vive Tracker device to track the realworld camera to move virtual camera in Unreal Engine. I wonder if it is also possible in blender. Can you attach HTC Vive Tracker to your camera which you use on greenscreen and record its moves to use this for virtual camera position in blender?
Great lesson. But for some reason, my mask is covering the whole area although I've completely covered my character and connected mask. I'll study this more!
James' ESL The 3rd fact I've discovered is the mask is working however, the size of the mask wrong and doesn't match size from the motion tracking window.
Well I'm pretty sure it's 1920 by 1080...but let me see. Hmm...that might be right. I see windows folder info is calling it 1080 by 1440. I'll have to try with those settings. A good question, did you do a tutorial on the integration of your 3d world with this keyed footage? Thanks for the speedy reply too. I find keylight in after effects to be much easier to work with.
Hey! Your pc's fastness will depend heavily on your processor, your integrated/dedicated graphics cards, your installed ram, as well as your boot drive. Your render time will depend on your GPU.
Hey CG! I know it's a bit late to comment so I hope you see this but I don't know how to connect my background image to alpha over to add a backdrop. I put the green screen vid on the bottom and the backdrop pic on the top after doing everything in your tutorial. It won't work so please help. :)
My mask dosn't work. i came here for help with that.... UUGHHH. for some reason the color on my mask wont show up nomater what i do! It just says black!
Okay, from the other comments, it's clear that this tutorial gets a C. I'm a beginner and it took me several passes to find the first screen you went to. Then after I got my mask set and we switched to the "Compositing" window, things went off track. I have Blender 2.76b. Anyway, my previous work from the 'Motion tracking' window did not follow me. I have a 'movie clip' input and a viewer node but no sign of my clip. And we are barely started in the video. Beginner means baby-steps.
Hmm I dont know why but my mask its not the same scale then movie. I used your move to learn and when i try ,my mask its much smaller then move i try use fixed and scale it but its not look good. Have any idea what i do wrong? :)
Anyone know where I can find free HD clips of green screen tracking scenes with an actor for practicing? Would love some of a character just walking down a camera or with some stable camera moves around the person.
At 5:7; after selecting key color if I click on image nothing is happening. My footage is 960*540 @ 23 fps & I have filled the resolution and fps properly in the beginning, what is the problem?
Let's suppose I wouldn't put an image in the background and just leave it like this. Would I end up with something like a png, but instead of an image I'd have a video w/o background?
Hey Cg geek, im a little new to this stuff and i was wondering how to get the image on like yours......... also what program. im guessing final cut pro or adobe ae but im not sure
When you say get the Image on, do you mean the background replacement? after following this tutorial all you need to do is connect a background image with your green screen footage using the Alpha Over node.
CG Geek yes thats exactly what i mean! thanks you so much! ill try to do that. thanks for responding so quick as well! also could you put the image in the desc? and how do i connect an image to the green screen footage using alpha over node? like i said, im really new to this...
Timing is totally messed up on my clip in the "Movie Node". My 10 second clip is 40x as long (almost 7 minutes). Same clip in the video sequencer runs correctly at 10 seconds.
Problem is adding the background. I have a character walking through a room (which I made in Blender), and finding it hell to remove the green screen and make him walk realistically in the room.
How did you get the video to show up in the background of the compositioning window? it sounded like you said Ctrl + Shift, but that did not work for me. Thanks!

I've been learning more and more about blender and I had no idea it could do this. This is awesome.

I don't have a computer
Edit, it’s been 3 years I have a computer now

Great video, short yet detailed enough to give a good idea of how to work with masks and chromakeying. Question though --- is there a way of using the compositor nodes for keying in conjunction with the video sequence editor?

Damn bro you replied one year later lmao

So many hidden places in Blender.
This is the best keying tutorial (thanks for saying hotkeys)!
Exactly what I was looking for
What software do you use? I'm new at this.
Sweet, lovely and beautiful. I can't wait to start using it.
Great work. Keep the videos coming.
thanks for the tutorial! will you be doing more vfx tutorials in the future?
Thankyou for responding so quickly!!

Hi sir according to you which animation software is best "MAYA" or "Blender" and why?
cool but Keylight in AE is still more handy
Very good, Thank you man !
How did you change the background?!?! How did you put the mask in a scene made in blender!?!?!? PLEASE make a tutorial on this!
Just connect an Alpha Over node to the end of your nodes, and connect your background image in the top slo
Cool video! Have you tut about how you made video at the and? I am wondering how to positioning 3d wall on place of real wall etc...
Hey how did you make the background move with the mask?
Motion tracking
Thank you for the footage !
i use it for a little compositing of my own on Nuke non-commercial.
Thank you teacher
Great work, and saved me on one of my green screen issues! Thanks!
Is there a tutorial how to compare the footage with the animated background (reflections, ambient occlusion etc.)?
Great video! I'm pretty new to Blender....so what comes next? Do I render this alone? Or do I do the green-screening in this same file?
YFTS ! You could do either! there's always more than one way to achieve something, its all going to depend how you need it.
Thanks man, saved my life!!
me trying to learn vfx.So here are some TIPS..
😅!!!

Very helpful, and I really like the short film
I followed your steps but when I click the "Animation" button, it just renders the movie clip.. how do you animate the result to a video?
You have to connect it to a compositing nod
You have to connect it to a compositing node
Are you using any Plugins? because your Keying-Node has WAY more options than mine, one of them is Matte inputs (I only have a Matte output) and Feathering.
Great tutorial. I wonder how to put the video back to "video editing" so I can enter the other elements of the finished movie. Can you give any tips?

Hey, great tutorial! Where can i find your camera data for motion tracking? Thanks for your answer in advance!
Hi CG GEEK, pls is it possible to light up a greenscreen to generate shadow or is it possible to get the shadow of a green screen object when u light it in blender? Thanks
Mono Background
here is the video that I did with your footage and great tutorial
if there is some mistake about publishing please tell me
for anybody who cannot key the man
please see your fps that set in render property
select the one that match the video
for this video I set at 29.97 (so I got this problem in the first time)
so I will try more and practice on my own work later

Any tips on using masking to change the eyes?

superb explaination
for anyone wanting to add a background image render your green screen part then use the video editor to overlay on a back ground image
Great lesson. But for some reason, my mask is covering the whole area although I've completely covered my character and connected mask. I'll study this more!
One thing I've noticed is the mask works fine on your mov video file, but not my m2t files. I'll experiment further.
James' ESL
The 3rd fact I've discovered is the mask is working however, the size of the mask wrong and doesn't match size from the motion tracking window.
James' ESL
This is probably because you didn't set the resolution in the Outliner to be the same as your footage.

Very nice tutorial, but I have one question left. How do I get Background images or vids in there?
Just connect an Alpha Over node to the end of your nodes, and connect your background image in the top slot. Voila!
and how do we add in the movie afterwards???
Just connect an Alpha Over node to the end of your nodes, and connect your background image in the top slot. Voila!

you are a genius
Amazing work there.

Did you try checking the 'Use Alpha' box on your viewer and/or composite?
Thank you
Hi! :) first of all, thank you!
than, how did you created the elements of star wars? did you modeled it?
Alessandro Abbruzzese Your welcome! Yup all modeled.

I love the x2 speed on RUclips
amazing
Well, I'm a beginner, and I can't understand how did you get the background to move the same way that the normal video moved?
You have to motion track it first. There are a lot of good tutorials on youtube about that ;)
Make a video about how you made this background in blender
What software you use
what camera you use?
Timing is totally messed up on my clip in the "Movie Node". My 10 second clip is 40x as long (almost 7 minutes). Same clip in the video sequencer runs correctly at 10 seconds.

Yup, Control + shift clicking the node you want, also make sure you have backdrop turned on.
which program so use please blender
He never said how to actually change the scene
he never said a lot of things because he was using keyboard shortcuts and never once told us what he was pressing......#FNANNOYING for a begginers video...
Yeah
will it work for other screens
Video isn't playing and I can't delete the render layer for some reason, Beginner so still learning things.
hey help me which software do you use

which is the easiest vfx software to learn ???? please reply
thanks sir
Dude which app!?
Wouldn't it be better to key the fingers separately from the rest of the shot?
Bro can you suggest a laptop bro
Cool!!!
For your next creation series you should consider a making a beginner one.
