One important thing to note about the timer is that it causes the iPhone to take a burst of 10 photos. Burst photos automatically disable HDR, or at least they used to up to and including iPhone 8 and X. One way to work around this was to disable Auto HDR in Settings, then force HDR enabled in the Camera app. This also disables Burst mode for Timer photos. It’s unclear Burst also disable Smart HDR starting with with iPhone XS and XR; however, on those models, as well as on iPhone 11 and 12, you can achieve the same by disabling Smart HDR in Settings, then forcing HDR enabled in the Camera app. On iPhone 13, you can no longer disable Smart HDR 4, so the only way to disable Burst with Timer photos is to enable ProRAW (only possible on Pro models).
Wait, so using the shutter timer takes burst photos? It seems to just take one photo on my 13 pro max, even when taking a jpeg? Am I missing something?
You may have Live Photo on Automatic, which is the default setting, and prevents the timer from taking a Burst. I didn’t think of that, because I have that setting disabled: it (slightly) reduces the quality of photos, notably in low light, in addition to adding a video file that takes up space and that I pretty much never want. Having any other setting enabled, such as RAW, Flash, or Night Mode (but not Styles), will also disable Burst.
@@zecanard gotcha, thanks. I have heard that Live Photos does slightly reduce quality, but I’ve never seen proof of that. I need to do some testing and look at it closely. I did have live on, though. Most of the time when I’m taking a photo I actually care about, I’ll take it in raw anyway. So I should be pretty much worry free about the burst mode. Do you ever forego using raw so you can have the HDR?
@@johnd9357 The loss in quality is the result of the iPhone being unable to maintain the shutter open as long as it otherwise would, since it has to record a video as well. In bright light, the difference in quality should be imperceptible. In low light however, the drop in quality was much more striking on iPhone 6s and 7. I haven’t done any testing since, though I imagine the larger main sensor in recent phones makes up for this. The telephoto and ultrawide would likely still be affected, however. I didn’t use RAW for a long time with the 12 Pro Max, but after seeing how much more control it gave me in post, I now use it exclusively. ProRAW *does* use Smart HDR in its pipeline, so you don’t have to choose as long as you have enough storage. The one downside I did find is that ProRAW does *not* appear to use Deep Fusion in its processing pipeline. This has been most evident for me with the telephoto lens, which uses Deep Fusion almost exclusively. I’ve taken telephoto captures with ProRAW both enabled and disabled; and while the ProRAW version gave me more control over colors (among others), I noticed a drastic loss of fine detail. This was most evident in the Grand Canyon, where the texture of distant rocks was quite sharp in the non-Deep Fusion capture, and completely smudged in the ProRAW version of the same shot. I’ve noticed similar loss of detail with the ultrawide lens, which leads me to believe that it too uses Deep Fusion almost exclusively. The problem with the ultrawide (on the 12 Pro Max) was that many of my photos featuring high dynamic range were unusable unless shot in RAW (highlight clipping, etc.). It was much better to use ProRAW and lose Deep Fusion in those situations. I haven’t done much testing on the 13 Pro Max yet. It is my understanding that the main sensor uses Smart HDR almost exclusively, and only switches to Deep Fusion in specific low-light scenarios where Night Mode is unnecessary. Long story short, I shoot ProRAW exclusively with the main sensor. I would put more thought into whether to enable it on the telephoto and ultrawide, if the loss of fine detail could prove to be a dealbreaker. Also, it is entirely possible that Apple improves the RAW pipeline in the future, so it’s worth checking again every once in a while.

great video will check out more of your channel....do have a queston...was taking a sun set pic over the ocean the other night. and a green dot appeared what is causing this and how to stop it from happening?

Thanks for posting this video. I recently bought this exact same shutter release and was disappointed to find you have to hold the shutter button for the duration of the timer setting, instead of pressing it once. After playing around with the volume button settings you mentioned, I found pressing the small button once activates the timer.
Great explanation, but quick question : Can you take “burst” photos using the Bluetooth shutter tool ? I want to capture multiple pictures while also being in the frame myself … is this possible ?
You can't activate burst mode with a bluetooth shutter unfortunately, but you can use the self timer - your iPhone will automatically take a burst of 10 photos whenever you're using the self timer. :)
Great video - thx for sharing. I’ve ordered the AB shutter 3! Could you perhaps talk about the head of the tripod that’s holding the iPhone? Or refer a link? Thx

I was hoping you might have as suggestion as to what to do when neither the screen button or volume buttons aren't anywhere near your trigger finger. You have a very controlled situation there, realistically people hand hold their phones most of the time and are trying to capture an active moment. Maybe just me, and I suspect as I shoot video often (in the correct landscape aspect) it some how end up around half the time unable to take the pic, often my finger nail keeps my finger just away from the screen trigger ... etc etc ... but anyway, I think the remote rigger seems to be a good solution. Thanks.

Hello. Greetings from California. I thank you for the valuable information that you share with us. Question: What is the model of the tripod that you use in this video or can you recommend a special one please. Thanks.!
Emil is using a Manfrotto tripod. You can check our tripod recommendations here: iphonephotographyschool.com/iphone-tripod
Wow, I hon idea you could do this it’s the shutter button. Fantastic video!
great video will check out more of your channel....do have a queston...was taking a sun set pic over the ocean the other night. and a green dot appeared what is causing this and how to stop it from happening?
That's a sun flare. They occur when the light hits the iPhone's lens at certain angles. Here's a guide that will help you remove them - iphonephotographyschool.com/touchretouch/
Much of these functions are also available with Android phones. Still, the explanations of what and why are definitely helpful.
Glad you found it useful! :)
Your level of teaching is fantastic 👏👏👏👏 God bless you
I have great difficulty dragging the shutter button to enable burst mode. Most of the time it goes into video instead. It was much easier when press and hold would start burst.
You can also set up your volume up button to take burst photos! :) Here's an article on how to set it up: support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/iphone/ipha42c55cd0/ios

The frame in the recording looks better than the pic itself taken
Thanks for posting this video. I recently bought this exact same shutter release and was disappointed to find you have to hold the shutter button for the duration of the timer setting, instead of pressing it once. After playing around with the volume button settings you mentioned, I found pressing the small button once activates the timer.
Great explanation, but quick question :
Can you take “burst” photos using the Bluetooth shutter tool ? I want to capture multiple pictures while also being in the frame myself … is this possible ?
You can't activate burst mode with a bluetooth shutter unfortunately, but you can use the self timer - your iPhone will automatically take a burst of 10 photos whenever you're using the self timer. :)
Great video - thx for sharing. I’ve ordered the AB shutter 3! Could you perhaps talk about the head of the tripod that’s holding the iPhone? Or refer a link? Thx
Glad you liked it. Here's the link to the tripod used by Emil: Manfrotto Compact Action Aluminum Tripod Kit with Hybrid Head (amzn.to/3S6Tneb)

There is a new feature on Apple Watch were you can program the shutter button to activate just by moving your finger. The watch detects that movement and snaps the photo. No touching your watch needed. Its under the accessibility section in the settings.

Thanks.
Very clear instructions and easy understand, I learn a lot from your videos. Thank a million ❤❤❤❤
