Becca is out for a run one morning, but as she makes her way down one of the backstreets of her neighborhood, she sees a man and a woman having a fight. Then she sees something truly unsettling: the man shoves her hard enough to knock her out cold. Becca and the man make eye contact as he realizes what he's done, but before he can say or do anything to her, she runs away, scared for her own safety.
Time passes and she's lulled back into a sense of safety, trying to put the memory behind her. Until one evening, when she meets the man out one night at a bar -- and he insists on walking along the way with her at the end of the night.
Writer-director Clare Cooney -- who also plays the lead role of Becca -- has crafted a quiet, intelligent urban thriller that explores the issues of silence, intervention and why some cannot speak up even in the face of violence. With precise, intelligent performances and equally smart, complicated writing, the short is a study in power, threat and the subtle yet insidious ways these are asserted -- and how it chokes off a sense of agency from those subjected to it.
From the film's beautiful opening scene, the story captures how the simple experience of making one's way through the world, energetic and carefree on a beautiful day, can change with just a small, unsettling sense of threat. The camerawork and cinematography begin with a sense of optimism and radiance, capturing an independent, free modern woman in the fullness of her life.
But that sense of possibility begins to constrict once Becca stumbles upon the couple. While the argument between the man and woman is clearly volatile -- and their dynamic seemingly abusive -- the killing that results is accidental, and the man is upset, stunned and shocked. But when he spots Becca, the sense of threat he emanates is transferred to her, and alone and afraid for her safety, she runs away and later stays silent, traumatized by what she's seen and scared he might know where she lives. What works in these scenes is how quiet, powerful and yet ultimately underplayed they are, avoiding melodrama and haunting the rest of the film with a sense of fear and threat.
That sense of constant but latent potential violence informs Becca's actions and emotions throughout the film and play out in a subtle way. Trauma, guilt and fear gradually mold and constrict her world, and her own sense of efficacy within it, and the film itself gets darker in tone and visuals. The writing slowly lays out Becca's internal emotional journey, which proceeds in an unexpected way. There are beats of disconnection, and maybe even denial, and lulls where the anonymity of modern urban life seems to offer an illusion of safety.
But that illusion is shattered when the man pops up some weeks later at a local trivia night. Proximity means possible peril, and the film shifts into a highly effective thriller, skillfully building up to a tense and suspenseful climax and confrontation that is largely constructed through what remains unspoken but lurking constantly under the surface.
The man's final scene alone with Becca makes clear he is not afraid to wield power and assert control and dominance in the situation. In the end, he asks Becca, "Are we good?" It sounds like a question, but it feels like a threat. It's a quiet but explosive moment.
Many will likely see Becca's dilemma through a moral or ethical lens. Did she do the wrong thing in staying quiet? Why didn't she just speak up? But arguments of ethics often hinge on assumptions that everyone is an equally free and equal agent in their life. What works about RUNNER and its powerful ending is how it shows that this often isn't the case. Power and the threat of violence are often subtly wielded, but the silence and complicity it can coerce -- even in the interest of self-preservation -- are nevertheless deafening and deadening.

The poor woman who died. She will never have justice.

You are both very intelligent and had excellent points! I have much thinking to do now. Was it truly an accident? We all have our moments of rage. Ok, not me anymore. I am 47 and a woman. Life has beat me down. But, if I were a man, my take away would be to be careful. I couldn't injure or kill my husband like that, but he could very easily kill me. After 29 years I would hope not. We are all beat down in our own way. I was a foster child who became a military wife and mother of two beautiful daughters. I am blessed in every way. Two years ago, our youngest daughter, eighteen at the time, tried to take her life. I just thank God she didn't succeed. My point is, life is fragile, much more than we think. One realizes it when it's too late sometimes. Be good to yourself. Jesus loves you! God blesses you in ways you can't comprehend❣❣❣ Thanks for reading this, momma Grace

Me too! She should have called the police regardless of if she knew him or not. Since it was an accident, he could have plead guilty to involuntary manslaughter and gotten a parole deal. Instead of calling 911 himself, he chased the only witness and then presumably covered everything up since he was never caught and then intimidated the witness months later. Not cool.
@@quappo Justice is the BASE of all human structure, the guy must absolutely be confronted to the family, friends and cops for the very reason that he must face the fault. No vengeance here, for the simple reason that at the last second of our life, we have the right (not say the duty) to ask our self weather it worth-ed it or not. I don’t understand the ending :(
It wasn’t murder; it was manslaughter. He didn’t intend to kill her. He pushed her after she grabbed him. Still, I would be frightened if I were her. He may think he would be charged with murder and figure another murder would be easier. But I doubt it. He could have killed her alone in the dark alley but he didn’t even threaten....as viewers say, it makes you think....
Didn’t threaten?! So if her answer had been “NO dude we aren’t f**ing cool!“ Don’t you suspect that that dark alleyway heart-to-heart might have gone another way entirely?
Edward Mathenge as I said, I would be frightened because he might see himself endangered. However, deliberate violence requires a different kind of character than the accident of violence in an ordinary quarrel.
Because she is a selfish coward, he realized she wasn’t going to do anything, but wanted confirmation.
In reality the guy was guilty of involuntary manslaughter, and the woman was guilty of being an accessory to manslaughter after the fact.
Toto Ze... No, she tried to grab him & he pushed her really hard, resulting in her head slamming into the dumpster & inadvertently killing her.
Toto Ze seriously how did you miss that
As someone who has witnessed a murder I just want to say this:
Sometimes you don’t want to contact the police because you don’t want to get involved. If you were the first person who saw the body you would immediately become a suspect. So some people don’t call the police. I didn’t want to but in the end my ex convinced me to call the police.
In my opinion, you should call the police either way because if i got murdered, I wouldn’t want some witness to wait like a week to confess and then make everybody think i “went missing” a witness should just say something whenever they can because murdering someone out of anger might be accidental but wrong.
Ha ha. That is what happens to murderers. They get their computers seized and searched. And they post messages like this one to throw the police off their trail.

The way I understood this movie she did call the cops or whatever, that guy got locked up or something and he physically is in fact out of her life. The point of the movie is that she can't forget what happened, she can't forget the guy's face so she keeps bringing him with her wherever she goes. These short movies have some of the best acting I have ever seen. I wish the actors and actresses were better known, they know emotions so well.
This is kinda what I’m dealing with at work. Being silent because you’re too scared to do anything even though to others it may seem illogical. The person who is threatening to me, we’ll call her “Robin”, indirectly has the ear of the manager, “Windy Spenser”. We work in a disability home for children. Windy appointed a close friend of hers as a social trainer in the house I work, “Tam”. Tam is also work friends with Robin. Robin doesn’t do her job well, but she gets away with it. I tried correcting this without involving the team leader but it has backfired on me because she doesn’t like being told what to do. Instead she has been telling lies to Tam about me, not only has Tam repeated those stories to everyone else in the work place but she talked to her dear friend, Windy, who then called around to ask if other team members could confirm the stories which of course they have because of what they have heard. The team leader didn’t even ask me whether these stories were true or not but she gave me a serious tongue lashing. I was in shock and anything I said in response just sounded like a weak defence. Now the team leader has a really bad perception of me, and I have never had this issue with management before. I still have to work with Robin and she does these increments of micro aggressions that are too petty to complain about to the team leader but also very distressing to me that I have to deal with it. Things like her mopping over my feet instead of just asking me to move out the way or at the very least waiting until I’m finished with what I’m doing. Things like not following company procedure with checking medication together. Not giving handover to me about clients in the morning. She’ll make a concerted effort to ignore me and that’s fine, but just the atmosphere at work has become very toxic. Some are serious but I cannot prove them without getting in trouble. Like she will make fun of some of the children’s disabilities to their face but because they have intellectual developmental delays they can’t tell that this is offensive and inappropriate so they just laugh with her. It’s disturbing. She only does it when I’m around and not when other staff are there. Robin understands the dynamics of power at my workplace and is using it against me. I’ve been completely discredited at work, by her. Speaking up to management about this will just make me look more like I’m the trouble maker, as though I’m being vengeful. I feel like I can’t say anything. That’s why I need to leave my job.
Keita Foxy This really sucks...sorry this happened to you!
you should secretly record her with some of those hidden cameras they put on pens or something she shouldn’t be around those kids hopefully things work out for you

If she felt sorry for him, she could have told the cops what happened, so the family knows how it happened, but described the guy differently so he wouldn’t go to jail.
Reading the comments here helps one understand how little people know about most of the things they're more than willing to opine upon. This film succeeds very well on the level of conversation starting, despite its failure to provide genuine resolution to the protagonist's moral conflict.

Okay. This is a great reason to start taking up running again. I’m convinced. Because right now, I COULD NOT outrun that guy.

One reason she didn't call the police may be that she feared her own safety. She knew it was an accident, but she didn't know the guy. He could go to jail for murder and one day come out. And she would have to live with the fear that he may come after her. So, she chose to live with the guilt of not doing anything.
Now I understand the purpose of this film, each film I watched here at Omeleto's actually, it's not always the ending that everyone else was expecting(as what I've read in the comments.) nope its manslaughter... if an 18 year old shoved with their strength a 10 year old and they damagaed themself to death it is the fault of the 18 year old not taking into account their strength even if the 10 year old lunged at them. the shove from the woman is not enough justificationto excuse a man making a woman smash her head to the point of death
@@kingkylie9655 what you described isnt defence. If the 10 year old lunged at the 18 and the 18 pushed the 10 off them that would be self defense.
When Electric Love started playing I just maxed out my volume AAAAAAA
Oh no! I know I'm not the only one that wanted this to keep going further into what happens from here, right? I guess the point though, is this really could be it, where they try to continue their life denying or at least simply keeping it a secret. I can't imagine they could see each other again, socially, without her cracking, or maybe this is more of the truth now a days, that we go along to get along, we don't want to offend anyone, we are afraid of the truth, and can convince ourselves of what we should think or do, but actually are afraid, and live shallow lives, more than we want to, but maybe we don't value someone telling the truth and them being courageous, like maybe we once did. Great film! 👍🏽💗
*Technically the woman attacked him first so it isn't murder. Maybe manslaughter instead.*
I love how everyone here is like "Whut. She didn't call the cops!" but maybe she doesn't trust the cops. In the end, they both have some leverage over the other. She knows what he did, and he know where she lives. And, he's likely to be caught anyway, through forensic analysis, CCTV, etc. There are so many ways this could still go. I loved it. I like the unexpected.
How guilty is a witness who doesn't come forward?
I don't get why she never called to police, why he didn't call an ambulance, or why he chased her when it was an accident.
1. She could've stayed anonymous if she was that scared.
2. He didn't hurt her on purpose, so he probably wouldn't have been punished too harshly, plus he wouldn't have to go around with a guilty conscience knowing he abandoned her.
3. Who tf wouldn't run if you started chasing them? He made himself look like the bad guy and actually dangerous.
Omg I feel her pain in the restaurant
I know everyone is saying "she should have called the police." However an unfortunate reality is that people are often too afraid to do anything, especially in cases of domestic violence. There was no telling what that man was capable of doing to the witness. The witness was most likely freaked out by the fact she was seen, and by the fact that he could have possibly killed her too since she saw what happened. Also, we must consider the fact that perhaps the man who killed the woman, may have been the victim of the relationship. We don't know who is the true victim and who is the abuser. In real life, calling the police is much more complicated than you may think. For hell's sake he met her, then followed her home and found where she lives by stalking. That is a huge risk which points out the possibility that he could harm or threaten her. Stalking in itself is a crime. She told him "we are good" out of fear that if she were to actually say how she feels and call the police, he would only hurt her. There are far too many cases of women being harmed and threatened by strangers, for us to see this and say "sHe ShOuLd HaVe CaLlEd ThE pOlICe." I think this film shows that in reality, calling the police and becoming a witness is far scarier than running away.
Not everyone bc I don't like to type so I did not say anything in the comments but if u see this I said it for it to wright it on its own then posted it so don't say I'm typing rn bc tbh I'm not even touching my phone
she could've called the police when she got home, that's what people are saying. When she said she would.... but, didn't
This is where those Krav Maga classes come in handy
When the guy said, "Hi . ." , I was skipping heartbeats hoping he wouldn't punch her or something
He stalked her home and waited outside in the cold to then say "see you around" and this chick still don't want to call the cops.. smh
bro the editing in the beginning was just absolutely amazing!
The actress is also the editor, writer and director.
I would’ve said to call an ambulance, said she had fallen
It was an accident. Dude would have gotten involuntary manslaughter. If he had no record, he may have just gotten probation.
She made the choice of not speaking up,now she has to live with it
It's a special kind of intelligence that has you end up alone in an alley with the guy you just saw being violent and chased you...
i carry a revolver, pepper spray, and a knife every day. Dont be a statistic, protect yourself.
