My parents moved us to Muskogee, Oklahoma in about 1959. My dad was a very musical chemical engineer and he always wanted me and my brother to play (piano lessons, me on violin or viola, alto or baritone horn, Steve on clarinet). So Mom got me in the high school's summer-band on the school's baritone horn. Leo was the lone trombone player, so he and I were reading off the same music stand for several weeks. Now I can way "I once was in a band with Leo Kottke." My parents were also in a bridge club with Leo's, or maybe it was just a women's group - I forget.
How could anyone possibly give a thumbs down to one of the most brilliant guitarists ever? At the tender age of 23, Leo was considered the greatest 12 string guitarists of the times!
I can understand it because his playing is too damned repetitive, if there was more light and shade in his solos he wouldn't bore some of us. I'm a musician so I can understand how some people fall asleep during his solos. Derek and the Dominoes live at the Fillmore East where Clapton plays 15 minute solos is a great example, Clapton plays all over the neck, he's playing the same notes but in every possible position,. Kottke doesn't do that he's playing the same stuff over and over and over. I'm sure he could use the whole neck but he doesn't
I just got done seeing him in a 280 seat auditorium tonight here in Broomfueld Colorado. Front row. Such a gift he has. My life is better today having soaked that in. Long live Leo.
On Halloween 1973, a friend introduced me the Leo by playing "Hear The Wind Howl" off "My Eyes Are Smiling." After I picked my jaw up off the floor, my first words were, "So, who's the guitarist accompanying him?" True story...
my absolute accousticguitar god. i dont know how he does it all. i played guitar many years but when i see him play, i recognize: i know nothing bout guitarplaying. im so happy, to have all his cds and listen to it again and again. thanks i saw him live in the 70s
A one of a kind talent and personality. I have had the to see Leo ♌️ many times in concert. My favorite place to see him was the Backstage in Seattle's Ballard neighborhood neighborhood. A strange funky venue in the basement of an office building. The vibe made it one of best places to enjoy 🎶 music.😊❤
I was privileged enough to get a ticket and drive out to Newark Ohio about five years ago to s see him live. He was pushing 80i Think but still played amazingly. One of the greatest shows I’ve ever seen by anyone!
This is so cool! My brother and I were there that night. He told a story about a chicken and a car fender that I'll never forget. An amazing guitar player and great entertainer!
Me too (had a New York City roommate who played guitar and introduced me to his music. We went to see him play in a club on Long Island in 1978-outstanding experience!)
What a wonderful guitarist and great guy. Great sense of humor and voice too. I've been a lifelong fan who has been playing guitar for more than 40 years and I still have no clue what he's doing. Hard to believe he's playing the same instrument I try to play. I'm in awe and always will be, but 5 people are from some other planet where they have no music and bad ears.
oh jeah, im a lifelong fan too. i have ca. 30 cds of his fantastic music, saw him live in germany in the 70s. NOONE, NOONE !!!! can ever reach his level of playing 12string acoustic. a total idol of mine, always. i have a very good stereo, tuned to sound "real", and its breathtaking, when you hear his music like this, like REAL
Werner: I share your enthusiasm! Have you ever heard Roy Rogers? Making unnecessary absolute comments..... I think 12 string is not understood. Hard to play and is not good strumming. The finger style cleans it up. Leo is terrific. Now, Joscho Stephan?
I was at this taping. Incredible to find it here on line! Told a story about an albino kid in his high school band class named Whitey LOL. I was at the sound check too that morning.
Wow! Thanks so much for the love and support, Helen ❤️ It really does appear you are a huge fan... Do so well to send me a mail on goggle chat to the email address on my RUclips channel description. Look forward to reading from you pretty soon!
Check out " My Feet Are Smiling " for June Bug . An early live recording and still my favorite Kottke album . The medley at the end gives me chills every time .
Oh, wow, the chicken clip is here, too! Whitey and the chicken. How surreal to have a memory come back like this. I'm in the audience but can't find myself in either clip. ACL is a small room
His thumb looks like the thumbs of another musical prodigy, the double-jointed Jaco Pastorius. Of course, they're both unique and unequaled. Sorry for the interruption....
Every time he breaks out of playing to tell a story, you think "Noooooo! You're enchanting me with your guitar!" Then he gets into the story, decides to go back to playing guitar, and you think, "Nooooo! You're enchanting me with your story!"
Was dating this hot fox when I was listening to his My Feet are Smiling album. Saw him in concert in 1976, also first concert I took my date to (same girl).
Sorry, download. I found it on Amazon on the Ice Water CD but nowhere to get it straight to my phone. Apparently, iTunes doesn't have any of the stuff from the Capitol years except the compilation album. I did order My Feet Are Smiling last night. Same story. It was the album that got me started on his music.
Really good freestyle riff on Pamela Brown. He calls the phaser "the nauseator" I'm trying to figure if I like the six string or twelve string rendition. Thanks for the post!
@MrNotsoscary Yes, but there seems to be something around his neck that makes it look thicker... BTW: His guitar in this set became one of the "misbehavours" as he calls them in Home and Away.
Whitey and The Chicken. It's in this group of clips. I witnessed that story when I saw him way back when.Hope you never have to suffer through his story about the guy that used to send him his fingernail clippings in the mail.lol
@gwingatetx Sorry, but I am hardly involved in the use of a mobile phone - and downloading. But good luck with it, being surrounded by Leo Kottke all the time!

Saw him twice and he was great. Loved when he told stories while talking to the audience❤
Leo Kottke is my favorite acoustic guitarist. I'm going to see him in concert on October 22, 2022, in Waterville, Maine.
I'm so excited!
I just got done seeing him in a 280 seat auditorium tonight here in Broomfueld Colorado. Front row. Such a gift he has. My life is better today having soaked that in. Long live Leo.
Among these treasures, "Pamela Brown" By Tom T. Hall song sung by the great Leo Kottke!
There is no one like Leo! His stories are half the appeal and his musical ability is amazing. And I love it when he sings!
Other than ‘Pamela Brown’, I only prefer his instrumentals…like Leo said “my voice sounds like geese farts on a muggy day”
I like hearing him talk. But yeah the guitar playing is awesome singing is pretty slick, but the things he says are a trio ! lol
@@hertzair1186 Yeah and that's after he brushed his teeth!
Thanks so much for posting---Leo in his prime!!!
I saw him live at the Dallas Brooks Hall, in Melbourne Australia, in the 1970s.
Superb .. ☆☆☆☆☆
I was at that concert too , amazing performance !
How he makes one guitar sound like a duo is beyond belief

I saw Kotke at a pizza and beer place near the Pitt campus in about '74. His wife played a cello as I recall. Outstanding then, a

Allen Kennedy: Spot on! Roy Rogers is definitely a great one. He does things with a guitar I’ve never seen any other do.
una leggenda!!!!!!
I watched this when it first aired. Mind blown. Still pretty awesome.

7 people thumbs down because their guitar playing will never hold a candle to this!
Saw this guy performing live 20+ years ago - what a talent!
Master axeman, singer, and comic! :)
Loved this stuff as a little kid in the middle 80s.
Thank you, Pamela Brown =D
Good one!
I saw Leo in Stone City Iowa back in the 80's. Small venue with maybe 30 people in the room....what a trip it was.
Excellent. Thanks for sharing this in it's entirety. Much appreciated.
Brilliant player and quite a raconteur to boot! Thanks for posting this.
I saw him in South Milwaukee a few years ago. The greatest!
I love his between song patter almost as much as his playing
Awesome. Thank you!
Thank you !
Gracias a Leo Kottke mi técnica de FingerStyle y slide mejoro mucho...
Un guitarrista joven mexicano sigue sus pasos.

The king of slide guitar!

Yes!
There’s magic in that right hand. No picks quite like Leo.
I've just downloaded music from all his albums. A real audio fest.
He played a snippet of Taking A Sandwich To A Feast while fiddling with the phaser.
@gwingatetx having finally figured out, what a fender is, I am going to understand this story completely... Uwe, Tübingen, Germany

Just thought I'd point out this is a 12 string but there's only 9 string strung. Both E's and A. A Master at work.

The video is terrible, but it just goes to show how extraordinary Kottke is. The sound is fantastic.
Given it is also a 12-string instrument, it's a pity Kottke never played the illustrious Portuguese guitar.
Anyone familiar with this 6 string Leo plays here?
Taylor in later years I think, not sure what this one is.
@gwingatetx Great memories, I see.

Do you remember when we taught a rabbit to smile and your knees caught fire? It seemed like yesterday, but it was only the day before.
Leo said ,,,if your thinking about taking up the 12 string,,,, don,t.
