    Hi Brian. I live in New Zealand and have been making a few knives but was never happy with the finish I ended up with when using an angle grinder and sanding discs. Thanks so much for designing this machine and posting such an amazingly detailed video about it. I've been building my own version of your belt grinder and it's looking great! Nearly finished. I just need to build the tracking wheel tilt bracket and I'll be done. I was just trying to figure out an easy way to fabricate that then came across your tracking wheel bracket video! Awesome! Thanks so much for sharing. You made it possible for me to build a machine that I otherwise would have thought was a bit too complicated to make without big expensive equipment. Kind regards.

    Great job on the build. The only constructive criticism I have to give you as someone who also owns my own cnc mill, lathe, and plethora of fab tools please use sacrificial material under your parts on the mill and rotary table when you have to clamp larger pieces with through cuts. If you take any kind of heavy cuts you may have your mill bit pulling into the material with every rotation of the bit and you end up with a ramping slot in your table. I have seen so many machines with scars on the tables from this. Other than that top notch build.

    For the hinges @ 5:30, Drill the pilot hole first, then thread it and use that to keep them aligned.
    I'd just tack weld them in a few spots here and there then clean those up last after everything else is drilled and cut.

    I like to use template tape instead of magnets or clamps. You'd be amazed how well it sticks to metal considering its designed for wood. And the belt sander will just remove the overhang.

    Heck yeah man. I appreciate the attention to detail. Lots of work went into making this design just right! Lots of milling there too. I like that rotary milling on the slots. That whole saw is massive!

      @@HouseMadeUS So I put all the measurements in the video and I have some drawings in the description. The original concept came from some guys on bladeforums.com. I put the link to the thread there too. They have pages and pages of people building a design similar to the one I did. No plans to make any plans though. Some of the components could be made instead of bought (like the screw table and maybe the bearing slider). If you manage to figure out an economical way to make both of those... You could put together some pretty sweet DIY plans like your grinder!

    To hold the hinges together when gringing the profiles, masking tape and super glue works super well!

    Nice job it is a lot better looking than mine but I built mine at work when we were slow so I had to hurry things up to keep the piece but all my material was machined after welding to assure a perfect 90 degree fit it works perfect but I want to change the motor out for the 2hp 3phase set up with a vfd the absolute best setup I just used what I had and at the time didn't know better but its 20 years old and still work great but has ate a few motors you really need that variable speed when making blades also a foot pedal to start the motor when you have the blade on the belt for the fine grind great build I will change mine over soon thanks for the info new subscriber

      Hi Ken, yes J over at Red Beard OPS made an awesome surface grinder, i will most likely follow his direction on that. And as far as the rotary platen I am waiting on the CNC plasma to come in. (HOPE ITS SOON) So we can make some cool stuff including a rotary platen. :)

    Love the attention to detail! One thought about clamping the hinges together to get an identical grind: drill pilot holes in all, tap the last one, bolt them together and shape. Just a thought... killer build!

    Amazing build video but here in the UK the cost of making this is nearly 3x the cost of having a pre-built 2x72 from a reputable knife site. Having said that it was still enjoyable to watch your process.

    when you use such a large diameter drill you do it in low speed with a lot of cutting oil and it doesn't scrim or make a annoying sound or vibrations.

    I would have drilled / tapped the hinges and bolted them together to get a uniform grind ( if I didn't have a milling machine/ turn table access )

    @ 7:48, put an aluminum or brass spacer under the plate so that just before you break through and ruin your rotary table, you see different colored chips.

    Great tutorial. Unfortunately I don't have much of the tooling you used in the build. So, I'll just have to figure a work around like angle brackets and bolts where I don't have a welder [well, I have a cheap 110 wire feed, but not the electric service to allow the use of it where I live, it always trips the breakers] and such... (and don't know another welder). I'll figure it out, I could really use this sort of grinder around the shop.
    Heck, maybe I'll even make a video on a "no-weld grinder build" and if it is succesful, post the video. We'll see

    OK FIRST HUGE MISTAKE!
    @2:30 you never vacuum up metal chips!
    You use compressed air to blow them all over your equipment, cloths, floor (so they can embed in your shoe sole and then you take them home) and that one last micro-chip goes in your eye so that at your next MRI it pulls through your optic nerve blinding you just before it passes through the rest of your soft squishy gray matter and out the back of your skull!

    How much room does the grinder take up? What would be the ideal size for a workbench for the grinder? I want to be able to move the grinder around my shop so that I don’t get dust all over my other tools on the workbench. If you have any other ways around this I would love any suggestions. Thanks

      Its 24 inches deep with the work rest, 17 inches wide and 20 inches tall approximately. Many folks have built a rolling cart for the grinder with locking casters and it works great as a mobile unit.

    Question. Why such thick steel and why such big square tubing? Why not use 1 1/2" and 1 1/4" square stock with thinner walls? The steel plate you use could also be reduces thickness wise thereby making the entire build lighter in weight. Personally, I can't see steel stock with thinner walls being affected by tension? Just an observation among all the belt grinder builds on RUclips. Great video.

      Thats a good question. Most grinders don't have the mass required to slow the vibration down from the motor and the belt speed. With 3/8" steel it softens the vibration down to nothing while also giving you a nice industrial feel, heavy & solid. I have used thinner steel grinders and they have a tendency to move and vibrate during use. This solves that problem and gives you a tool that will last many lifetimes. One other thing is the balance of the motor on the frame, with the weight of the motor the machine wants to live in the vertical position but with very little force you can turn the entire head 90 degrees to the left and it (without a locking mechanism) will stay put. All as a result of the mass of the grinder. Hope that helps. - Brian

    Why do you use such a large diameter wheel on motor drive? Seems like that would put a large strain on motor. Just curious cause I’m in the process of building one and I’ve got a 4” diameter wheel made already , now I’m second guessing.

      I do like the design here - but not sure how it's really that much simpler... House design uses tubing and Jeremy's uses welded flat bar stock? I suppose the motor mount here is simpler. I like that in Jeremy's design the same table can be used with both vertical and horizontal orientation.

      When I was learning trade as a bricklayer / brickologist / masonary technician I had the old boys that tried to teach me in imperial and swore it was more accurate! It boggles my mind 7/32 ? What the hell? Fractions aren't my friend!! Yeah even the Aussie rock climbing difficulty grades start at 1 and go up where as the rest of the world have their unique country to country grades and they're all WELL over complicated!

      I use the cheap ones from Harbor Freight. They actually work as well as the expensive ones.

      Nope. I almost made a vid on this but didn’t want to piss off Klingspor. The harbor freight cutting wheels lasted the same amount of time. I will say the ceramic discs cut faster and are thinner but they just don’t last.

      you are better off just buying some decent namebrand normal onse vs the expensive ceramics. They mostly lean on the better performance ceramic belt have with grinders, but thats not 1 to 1 comparable.

      Hi Toby, max RPM is somewhere in the 7000 range right now and no you don't need a 7" wheel, It can be as small as a 4" wheel.

    I'm building the tracking are and pillar. Your diagram on step 7 shows a 3/8 inch hole in the arm 3 inches from edge and is says not tapped. Your instructions say on page 21 under Figure 15 that the fulcrum hole is a 3/8 hole so drill a 5/16 inch hole. Is this hole tapped? or just straight through 3/8. Secondly the other two holes 1.5 inches from the edge, only the side hole is all the way through and the top one is only through the top? Your image doesn't show where the spring hole is located.

      The fulcrum hole is 3/8 of an inch all the way through and not tapped.

      The 3/8 tapped holes the left to right holes are all the way through for the tracking knob adjusted and the top hole just goes through the top and stops.

      The spring hole can be anywhere on the bottom back plane. Centered is preferred.

    Will the VFD and motor you list work on [residental] single phase power? I have two 240v (30 amp breakers each) in the garage I could use. Just don't want to worry about phase issues or needing to get a phase converter to run this.

      Yes, the VFD converts single phase to three phase. So in order for any motor to be variable you need it to run off of three phase power. However, the VFD will take your household or commercial single phase and convert it to three phase. And it works best off of 220. 👊🏻

    Great work.
    However....... can someone please explain to me why Americans find the need to remove the guard from their angle grinders?
    It’s a massive bug bear of mine. There is no advantage to remove it. I normally switch off straight away from videos where this exists.
    I did watch all of yours though cause of the high quality of the design and the video.
    But please be careful

      If you'll look, you'll see that most of the 2 x 72 grinders you can buy, don't come with them. It's not just Americans either, I've seen plenty of EU contributors that have no guards.

      @@HouseMadeUS I was working on a big radial arm drill press drilling for 1/4" tap holes when my glove got caught by the drill and I had to break the drill off or get my hand and arm wrapped around the spindle. I had to break the drill while it was turning. It wasn't fun. I never wore gloves around any machinery unless it wasn't running after that.
