THE LAST SUPPER (Maundy Thrusday/Holy Thursday/Pesaha/Lord's Supper/last supper/passover) April 5th 2023 / April 6th 2023
The last supper took place on the first day of Passover, or the Festival of Unleavened Bread. Jesus sent his disciples ahead into the city to prepare a meal to celebrate Passover.
Jesus passed unleavened bread and wine around the table and explained to his Apostles that the bread represented his body and the wine his blood. At this supper, according to the Gospels, Jesus blessed bread and broke it, telling the disciples, “Take, eat; this is my body.” He then passed a cup of wine to them, saying, “This is my blood.” Jesus' words refer to the Crucifixion he was about to suffer in order to atone for humankind's sins.
The story of the Last Supper on the night before Christ's crucifixion is reported in four books of the New Testament (Matthew 26:17-29; Mark 14:12-25; Luke 22:7-38; and I Corinthians 11:23-25).
The Last Supper provides the scriptural basis for the Eucharist, also known as "Holy Communion" or "The Lord's Supper".
