Man, the way you describe how Gowther uses brainwashing to get himself a girlfriend, and mindfucks his allies for shits and giggles, it's like someone misplaced a memo that he's supposed to be a villain.
he IS a villain. just a half villain though because of the whole Demon Race things that end up destroying everyone's relationship with him around the climax of the story.
It's telling that 75% of this roast is just literally recapping the story and letting that roast itself. Which sounds like I'm saying Geoff didn't have to do much work for this episode, but that's not true, since he actually had to watch this entire show to do that and I know from personal experience that getting therapy after a deeply traumatic event is a lot of work.
"He was the true mastermind behind the the plan he was just instrumental in stopping" ah, the endless war with your own self-sabotage. Like how Geoff allowed himself to watch this show after nearly escaping it.
I laughed pretty hard when I realized he was repeating his script for Melodyass being stuck in hell for Melodyass’s little brother being stuck in hell.
I'm so happy he recapped it all. I stopped watching 7ds for the pacing issues he brought up but was originally hooked in the first like 3 episodes, quit a few times, but gave up keeping up some time pre-covid, in the great beyond. I've recently been thinking about getting back into it but holy fuck am I glad I didn't now. My heart can't take another hit after the Witcher, GoT, and Westworld
That's more a runtime thing. I feel like all he had worth saying was done in the first 15mins. But people love his video roast so the runtime isn't going to fill itself.
@@timothymclean Yeah, you can make levels work in a narrative. They just have to actually mean something to the audience. Random big numbers the increase forever don't mean anything.
The fact that the SDS fanbase still tries to defend that scene and actually see as "wholesome and romantic" never fails to astonish me. Even with context I remember watching it as a young highschooler and still being mad creeped out lmao
I agree it regularly would be weird for a character that looks like a kid to call a baby in his arms his woman to two knights after coming out of a creator without any context. I’m not defending it but I wonder why do you guys feel this way when you have the context of the scene to understand why he is saying that.

Jericho bulletpoints (mini rant): *Suffers an inferiority complex to her brother and has to work under the cruel Weird Fangs. *Gets humiliated by Ban in her first "battle" and loses her armour. *Drinks demon blood and risks dying to gain the power in order to take revenge on Ban. *Cuts up Ban and even wears his blood as lipstick (still a cool moment ngl) while hurting innocent folks. *Gets turned into a monster and is completely naked after being saved by Ban. *Decides to stalk Ban and ignores her friend Guila's unusual behaviour changes. *Honestly believes she's in love with a man old enough to be her father yet Ban is clearly not interested. *Has to accept Ban prefers fairy lolis over her while risking her life to save both Ban and Elaine (including taking a boulder to the face). *Is completely helpless in the 2nd tournament and eventually needs to be saved by teleport ex machina like several other characters. *Gets kidnapped by a demon and gets a demonic egg injected into her. *Her brother dies trying to save her from becoming a demon and in the end she's saved by Merlin being "infinite". *Finally gains innate magical power mourning her brother's death yet at this time Holy Knights have become completely irrelevant in terms of strength compared to the Ten Commandments and even mid-level demons. *Years later developed "feelings" for Ban's son and as a result of her shame joins the enemy just "because". Tl;dr: I've rarely seen an author blatantly hate their own character this much, I don't even like Jericho that much but sheesh it's almost like she's narratively cursed.
I'd make a joke about it still being a better love story than Twilight but I'm _pretty sure_ that falling in love with someone, chasing after them even though they're clearly in love with somebody else, finally giving up when they get together with that person and deciding to just bang their kid is exactly a love story from Twilight.
Jericho got done so dirty with how she essentially goes after the son after being rejected by the father lmao The big Age gap relationships just keep getting worse….
There was so much terrible writing and shit going on in NNT that I deadass blocked out all the creepy sexual shit. Was fun back in the day to read chapter for chapter (online for free, ain't paying for that garbage) and going to the forums and subreddit to mercilessly make fun of the story.
It's in the top three worst tropes in fictional works imo (as in tropes that are not only overdone but if they're not don't well it completely wrecks the narrative), the other two being time travel and love triangles/Vs. Dishonourable mention to "It was all a dream/illusion".
The only anime I can think of that did the amnesia concept well is Attack on Titan, when the king deleted all the memories of the nation's citizens so they wouldn't remember the days of the Eldian Empire.
@@goldendragon6570 If we're going to look at upcoming anime, ReZero's third season looks to be covering Arcs 5 and 6 of the LN. Arc 6 in particular has one of my favorite uses of the amnesia trope in all of fiction, which I won't spoil here. Perhaps saying that the trope is there could be considered a spoiler, but, memory has been a driving theme since season one, so, I don't really count it.
Amnesia where we don't know squat about the characters past is fine but overdone. Amnesia on characters we've already met is the worst because it doesn't have the intrigue of a hidden past. It's usually just an excuse for a character to suddenly act stupid by joining an evil organization or reset a relationship.

When Elaine got her wings for the first time, I was kinda hoping she would gain an adult form, you know like King did a season later. Author had an out but decided not to take it.
The evil Elaine reintroduction was a pretty good chance to change up her design. She could have aged herself up to match Bon and kept the form afterward.

This show really is the embodiment of "that was a good idea, so let's do it poorly" Best example is the chaos final fight. The idea of meliotis being stuck in an illusion where he thinks he has to fight chaos alone because everyone else grew old and died is super cool, but it is so poorly written and so awfully resolved that it hurts by how much of a waste of potential it is
I'm so glad he mentioned how r wordy this show is. Fucking nonsense. I argued with people for like 2 hours about it on Reddit. That it doesn't ducking matter if they were in love in a past life lmao.
I read the Manga as it was released and describing it as a slippery slope of falling down an escalator for 24 hours is much more accurate than I'd like to admit.
You'd think it could do something right by pure chance but the series somehow defies all logic. I kept reading in the hope that something would salvage it, and after Rock-kun it was just spite.
This was somewhat similar to my experience of watching the first half of Love Flops, albeit worse because of the time frame and because, frankly, you know *exactly* what you're watching happen when you watch Love Flops willingly.
I read 2/3 of the manga. Early on Meliodas and a holy Knight throw a spear at each other from different towns. Each character being a walking intercontinental ballistic missile was the coolest thing I'd I've seen. Then every Escanor scene was pure Chad energy. The series does some of the greatest power fantasy writing. But the actual plot being an ourborus of ass pulls ruined it for me.

The rock fallng to crush her was the cliffhanger for a weekly chapter when that "final" arc ended, when all the writing on the wall was that the series was over and going to end soon. It was so fucking funny the week that chapter came out.
One thing that you didn't mention is the armor of the background character holy knights. In the early seasons, only the big bad special holy knights had funky armor with weird colors and abilities and shit. The background knights had regular, semirealistic metallic armor. But in later seasons, everyone just has whacky, colorful armor like medieval power rangers. Always bugged me.
True. This was a huge loss from the power creep, and I'm glad Four Knights of the Apocalypse has brought it back. Nakaba always excelled at creating monster of the week and miniboss Holy Knights. It helps that this is where he can lean on the Matter of Britain the most.
You know, I criticize Netflix a lot for how they've handled their anime licenses, including when they originally held this show back for months on end before unceremoniously dropping it onto their servers. But then, them doing that means I never remembered to watch past season 1, so really they saved me on that one.
Season 1 had an amazing and consistent German dub Season 2 forward they literally changed more then half the voice actors and switched names/pronunciation of some character names, sometimes multiple times for the same person in the same sentence from the same person.
Kind of funny that Escanor, who is the most relatable and least disturbed character in the story, got yeeted out of the story in the most badass way so he wont witness the shit show that happens in the end
So basically, Escanor Bardock’d his way out of the story, where he saw the future and decided “And I now welcome the sweet embrace of death”, except what he saw was worse than anything Dragon Ball GT could throw at him. Kind of appropriate, considering his English VA is also Gohan.

I actually liked the idea that Meliodas was a demon at first. I thought it was interesting for the main character to be a surviving member of a race sealed away 3000 years ago, especially when the broken sword handle he carries around is revealed to be the key to that seal. The happy go lucky MC knowingly preventing the return of his people and family in order to avoid a world destroying holy war seemed pretty cool for a character representing the sin of wrath. But then he's actually the demon prince and gets a depressingly badly animated magic set of clothes to show his edgy dark side. They really soured the rest of small things I liked about the series.
I think even as a demon prince it could've been interesting. Abandoning his brothers, father and clan but the sake of his friends and the one he loves, only to watch that person die time and time again before him, he hides his wrath and depression with a happy smile, but his anger still leaks out and causes harm to the people he loves. He returns willingly with his brothers to inherit the throne so as to protect his friends and free elizabeth, allowing for some interesting character interactions with estarossa and zeldris, only be further emotionally damaged by the revelation that estarossa is mael and that his father simply wanted to possess, he now fights for the people that truly care for him, completely overcoming his wrath and gaining control over his full power. This could also help develop zeldris's and estarossa's character's, as zeldris could feel resentment and jealousy towards meliodas betraying them, while estarossa can form an actual bond with meliodas that isn't just a memory of ludociel replaced with meliodas, making him all the more conflicted when he regains his memories since now he has actual memories of both ludociel and meliodas as his brother.
It became way too convoluted towards the ending of the show, it just felt like they had no plan so they just kept changing the script and not going back to make sure it actually fit correctly. *Common story-telling wisdom:* What makes a cliché a cliché is the fact that the audience considers them overused and predictable, but the audience also tend to forget that they are overused exactly because they _work._ The trick is often simply to give some sort of a new spin on them, so they seem fresh. *Seven Deadly Sins:* So, what you're saying is that we should do them at least twice as much?
I can't believe what they did to Merlin in the end. The complete destruction and decimation of her character at the end was so sudden and so completely out of nowhere, I actually find myself impressed at how bad that was
For me, the problem was only the loli suit part. Otherwise, I always thought she was too shifty and never particularly liked her character, even if I did enjoy her magicking solutions to various problems the Sins faced.
The moment when Dreyfus comes back and it's revealed that "OOOOH look he was the TRUE mastermind all along!!" was about when I realized how much of an ass pull every single plot turn in this show was.

I wouldn't say so, given we only ever hear it brought up a few more times to show how much of a power up from training different characters get or from a power up, the escanor vs melinda and to show how powerful Cusack and Chandler are, those are the last two times we ever hear it brought up again.
I pretty much bailed when that was introduced. (though I was watching the show becuase of the game and I was curious with what the content was in the anime) hell I even quit the mobile game the show was based on, but by then I quit when I got around....... uh. It was after we meet Merlin. I can't remember exactly. Though I will say the Demons are a bit... lackluster in design, though this is from someone who's more used to Doom 2016 where the enemies are actually threatening and would wipe everyone off the map.
They're not always terrible. But they need to be introduced near the beginning. It's a bad sign if power levels are just jammed into the setting after the first arc. I remember when Yu Yu Hakusho suddenly started evaluating every characters' combat traits in it's last arc. It was done so awkwardly, it didn't add anything to the fights. Plus by that point, the main characters had gotten so strong, it was unnecessary to hold them to a grading system. It's the same with SDS. I think characters stopped mentioning power levels halfway through the Commandment arc.
Considering the original theme was medieval tales and such, This would’ve bern an actually good storyline with these legends. “The great sorcerer Merlin left the gates of hell open!” would’ve been a great premise if the show wasn’t a shitshow.
Trust me, reading the manga as that last arc of fuckery going on was far more painful than the anime. At least with the anime you could binge it all in a day or two. Nah, Escanpr simping after Merlin of all people dampened the cool factor for me. Honest best character for me is Diane. That woman fought tooth and nail for her agency as it was repeatedly stolen. She's also hot, so...
For me, Escanor was the best reason to watch. the man defeated two villains without leaving where he stood, and was immune to most disability spells. such as the spell that stole all your stamina and rendered you too weak to stand up. this spell was activated if you showed any hatred for your enemy. but Escanor didn't feel a thing. he then walked right up to the villain's face. "How can I hate those weaker than me? All I feel is pity." This sent the villains into orbit with rage. I freakin' loved it. he was a true Chad.

I actually think there's potentially interesting storytelling to be found in the whole 3000 year old Loli thing, if someone besides Interview With a Vampire, would explore the frustration and problems that come with being trapped in a child's body. If the fairies weren't able to alter their age at will, but just stopped aging at that point, there is a lot you can do with that idea to make it something truly great. Claudia from Interview With a Vampire is probably my favorite part of that movie, because the situation she finds herself in would become a nightmare after your mind has matured well past your static body. Her rage over being stuck as a child, while yearning for someone that refuses to acknowledge her as an adult was a genuinely fascinating take on the "immortal" character that doesn't get explored nearly enough.
The only time I've ever seen this sort of concept executed pretty well is with Babette in Skyrim, she was turned into a vampire when I think she was like 12 or 13 and when the game takes place she's about 300 and is using her looking like a child to her advantage as an assassin of the dark brotherhood because no one in their right mind is going to even suspect a little girl of being a seasoned killer let alone be afraid of one

Then I saw the flashback of Diane and King's backstory and was just questioning why the hell I was watching it, thankfully I was watching with friends so we all collectively shat on it at the time while laughing. Then after S1 ended I found out Elaine comes back and noped the hell out forever. Years later I saw some of the creator's art as well as hearing about the whole "Elizabeth is Meliodas' forever child bride" and realized mans is peddling his barley disguised pedo fantasies, I've never felt so much shame for watching an anime in my life lmao.

What really sucks about the falloff from the first season is that there actually was a genuine attempt at setup and payoff. The downfall of the Fairy Kingdom and the actions of its few survivors are important to the backstory of 3 of the sins (admittedly, Diane’s is a bit of a stretch), and many elements of the finale connect back to this moment. One of the major antagonists for this part is King’s best friend, and the demon whose blood is used to power up all the Holy Knights was the one responsible for the forest burning down, and that Ban killed in revenge. It actually sucks that the writing kept doubling down on the worst parts, because I can see potential for interesting connections like that later in the series.

Remember when they mentioned Elizabeth used to fight? Remember when she came to back up Meliodas when he confronted the demon king???? No? Yeah i dont blame you, i could never get over how they tried to make Elizabeth seem like a badass yet she litterally did nothing but heal or be emotional support
she wasn't resigned to healing and emotional support because she was incapable or because the writer didn't care, but because she was clearly characterised as a pacifist. (her past as bloodie ellie was back before she even met meliodas, so recovering her memories wouldn't suddenly make her fight alot more)
Don't disrespect healers. If you ever play a tabletop RPG, that'll be the last mistake you ever make. They're the core and most important part of every party, and her healing was basically on the level of "so long as you're not dead Elizabeth can fix you".

I never got passed the unconscious booby touching scene. I knew EXACTLY what this series was by that point and I value my time enough to not waste it with terrible art.
That's fair. I actually managed to finish the first season years ago, and liked it, but something always felt off about it, and I never went back to watch more. It's only after thinking back to my time with the show that I realized why, and it's the same reason as why you stopped. As I said in another comment, this show is wannabe-anime.
The author of Seven Deadly Sins was actually a huge Bill Cosby fan. In one of his interviews he said that if it weren't for Cosby, he would never have gotten into drawing manga.
The shows romance story is essentially a woman gets raped again and again by a terrible protagonist then gets Stockholm syndrome and fall in love with him and has a child.
Every time I grow even a little desensitized and expecting of anime creepy inappropriate relationships, mangaka are hard at work to give me a brand new curve ball of "what the fuck don't date her that's horrible" I've never seen before
My personal "favorite" from one of the more recent chapters of the sequel: a loli that acts too mature because even though she is a little child for once, she has foretelling powers and has technically already lived through her entire life through her visions. Of course we first find this out when she tries to make moves on her future husband, much older teen boy who may or may not be the same one the holy knight Ban SAd wants to bang.
The funniest shit is knowing Meliodas and Elizabeth are cousins since their mom and dad are siblings made by the Chaos God. And also then there’s the other aunt/uncle the Big Fairy Tree.
They're two generations from Chaos. Zeus and Hera are siblings, three or four generations from Khaos, and nobody thinks that's weird. Rules are different for primordial beings, I guess.
@@timothymclean true, so many gods/goddesses marrying their siblings must’ve been common hence the royal families do the same thing to mimic the gods they worship at the time.
As someone who was in process of watching this I commend you sir. My brain broke down at the Loli girl moment and I stopped watching it. I was already annoyed by Meliodis constantly harassing Miss Mary Sue with no response from her. So hats off to you because even listening to it I got lost. The only loss I gained was knowing Escanore dies, he was the only one I genuinely enjoyed.
Escanor left because he knew that his teammates are a bunch of pedophiles and the woman he has a crush on is 3000 year old girl with the body of a 12 year old.
The saddest part is that this trainwreck got to stumble all the way to its conclusion, while The Promised Neverland got an extended anime original ending in place of a second season.
The Promised Neverland’s second season confuses me. I cannot think why they’d do that. It was one of their most successful shows. Why skip over almost all of it and then put no effort into the things that you actually do. They earn less money this way. Like make it 3-4 seasons
@@canasdad9115sure, but they still had a lot of solid material to work with before it went off the rails, and they could have improved the ending instead of dedicating 3 slides of a powerpoint to it.
One thing I think is really cool is Ban and Meliodas' friendship because it's 100% genuine. They're practically brothers, and the first thing they do after seeing each other for the first time in years is make a fuss and play arm wrestling.

The portrayal of women instantly shut me off. I just thought it was so stereotypical and garbage, so much potential down the drain. And the comparison to Mineta is spot on, how can we be expected to root for a literal predator???
I hate this anime but clearly you have no idea what's going on in the story. Being a predator and going after the literal reincarnation of your true love is completely different. Exactly. I haven't even watched season 3 because of the animation and memes. And I still defend the first season for having some good action scenes (for what it was) and for it's music, I think it's the second opening of the first season that I really liked
Honestly season 3 is just unwatchable. Like in the manga we could just do the whole fight chaos & freeze for later in 10s. In the anime it's just so boring. Everything in season 3 is boring. I was done with the series when Bon's wildly inappropriate and sketchy romance with Elaine came to light 🤮 I know technically she was thousands of yrs old, but c'mon, we all know what it looked like, and when Bon made a point to mention how much he liked her underdeveloped body, that's when I was done.
The difference is that both of them are (rightfully) hated instead of one getting off scott-free (except in-universe, but that's the result of two very different writers).
ages ago i started this show thinking it looked like a fun romp. i got to the part where protag-kun gropes elizabeth while she’s unconscious and immediately turned it off and this video is telling me that was the correct decision
I initially dropped it after first groping but then a buddy of mine said it gets good, keep going, so I did and while I have to say I don't hate the show as much as most people here and I think it's stupid that we try to analyze morals of fantasy world based on morals of our world, I also know I would have lost nothing of value if I never returned after those first 10 minutes.

I now realized that I rationalized the thing with Ban and Elaine by focusing on the fact that she was a fairy, who was supposed to look petite and young and all... But then I realized that no amount of narrative context could ever be enough to avoid the simple question: "Why? *Why* did she have to look like a pre-teen?!" Don't get me wrong, the idea of the thief falling in love with the queen of fairies and then her sacrificing herself by imbibing him with the fountain of youth's power during a demonic incursion is unironically a great setup for a character like Ban. It's telling that 75% of this roast is just literally recapping the story and letting that roast itself. But then, them doing that means I never remembered to watch past season 1, so really they saved me on that one.
Season 1 had an amazing and consistent German dub

I think it was still good. I don't understand why i don't see anyone talking about the Merlin/Arthur/Chaos part. That's where I lost it.

*Common story-telling wisdom:* What makes a cliché a cliché is the fact that the audience considers them overused and predictable, but the audience also tend to forget that they are overused exactly because they _work._ The trick is often simply to give some sort of a new spin on them, so they seem fresh.

This video helped me get the punchline of the joke I played on myself like 4 years ago by thinking this was one of the best shows
Power levels were the worst things to be introduced to this series
I wouldn't say so, given we only ever hear it brought up a few more times to show how much of a power up from training different characters get or from a power up, the escanor vs melinda and to show how powerful Cusack and Chandler are, those are the last two times we ever hear it brought up again.
Showing power levels with numbers is bad writing in general

I just wished that Elaine was an adult like king.
(her past as bloodie ellie was back before she even met meliodas, so recovering her memories wouldn't suddenly make her fight alot more)
It gets even worse once you notice how much she gives the middle finger to other goddesses and only gets off her ass for non goddesses.
Don't disrespect healers. If you ever play a tabletop RPG, that'll be the last mistake you ever make. They're the core and most important part of every party, and her healing was basically on the level of "so long as you're not dead Elizabeth can fix you".

Yeah I saw this coming when the mc acted like mineta. Yeah I noped this anime and I’m glad
Nah 7ds is trash but Elizabeth never was raped by Meliodas or hadn't nothing like syndrome stockholm.

My personal "favorite" from one of the more recent chapters of the sequel: a loli that acts too mature because even though she is a little child for once, she has foretelling powers and has technically already lived through her entire life through her visions.
