Planted these for the first time this year. I planted the tall purple ones. I didn’t expect much it being my first time planting them. They sprouted, grew long stems with big beautiful purple balls. Now I want to plant hundreds of them 😁❤️
What a lovely showcase Danielle! My alliums have been quite the show offs this year! FYI- I love every drop of your content. You are one of the very few people I watch from start to finish. Thanks for sharing all of your beautiful things with us 💜💕
I just planted alliums this winter and got my first flush of them this spring, I love them! I will be definitely adding more to my garden this fall. I posted many pics on IM and FB barraging about their majesty and benefits as I haven’t seen any moles this year digging through my yard! Love your channel and sweet Godly spirit. Hugs and love from Texas!
I love my alliums 💝 so beautiful. I added them to my garden three years ago. I have dug up and divided a couple and have many new additions. I have also potted some of them up into planters for my decks. But On this point., you had added acidanthera to your garden this year... I added them three years ago.., so last year I dug them up and I collected all the tiny corm babies. Brought them inside over the winter and replanted them thick this spring enmass in short trenches. And They are all popping up!., I now have thousands more of these wonderfully scented beauties to split up and divide, on top of the initial stand, which are all doing great. Anyways., alliums! 😜 I have to spread mine out... I tend to clump everything together. But I love how yours are spread out amongst the gardens. I Will have to rethink my madness. 😂 Keep growing🌱🙏🏻
Regarding the yellowing foliage, how long does it need to be left on to gather energy for next year? Also, what about dividing them? Best to wait until fall?
This was such a beautiful video your alliums are amazing and you have such a beautiful spirit I love watching all your videos. I spent so much money on Aliums this year but not one of them came up. I think I watered them too much and they all rotted. Oh well we live in learn right. Thanks again for your beautiful video and instruction. 💜💜💜
That was fabulous Danielle! I have alliuns of all variety in my garden and I will be adding more! Another favorite is Allium moly... the yellow spring bloomer.
Love, love, love allium! I added a little blue one last year and it’s so cute, and true blue. But my favorite is drumstick allium. They bloom late and the pollinators adore them. I ordered a Few Red Mohican to try for next year. And the short squat ones actually have really pretty, wide leaves that look good for a long time.
@@rphjacobs9197 When I googled “blue allium” the variety “caeruleum” came up and I’m pretty sure that’s it. It’s smaller than most, so I planted in clusters for more of an impact. They’d get lost otherwise, but I’m hoping they’ll bulk up over time.

Danielle, I love you and your beautiful gardens. I've learned so much from your videos. You have such a pleasant voice and a positive attitude. One question. Do you plant tulips as cut flowers or do you let them winter over. Your tulips are so beautiful. I like the way you group different varieties together. I planted alliums last year for the first time and only one bloomed our of 6. I purchased them at Lowes and the fault may be mine. I will plant the next ones deeper. The one that bloomed was blue. The variety is Persian Blue. The globe was about 2.5". I saved the seed and will sow them back around the original planting to see what happens. However, I plan to order bulbs from Longfield gardens for the coming year. Your videos inspire me. I am 82 and have a gardener to help me now as it is not as easy as it used to be but together we are having fun and making beautiful gardens..
Thanks for the video! Love your garden. I LOVE alliums! Have some planted 2 years ago and some just last Fall. I did notice my Globemaster alliums are noticeably smaller than last year say by about 1/3 and wonder if you’ve heard of this? Schubertii is also new this year and they are super interesting. My hair alliums planted last fall didn’t bloom at all. So I may need to plant more.
I have had Perennial alliums two years now they have come up very nice doubled in quantity and I had plenty of balls this year 2023. The blades are coming up there about 12 inches tall, but there are no stems with flowers on it. Can you tell me what is going on somebody help
Plant a low height perennial or bushy annual in front of the alliums so the yellowing leaves are hidden behind it while keeping the spent stalk of the alliums for interest, if you wish. The low growing plant you put in front will camouflage the yellowing leaves that you should leave on the allium in the ground so the energy from the yellowing leaves can be transferred to the bulb in readiness for the following year. Remove the allium leaves when they are brown and dried, at which time, they will separate from the ground easily.
Here in South Carolina, I tend to plant all my fall bulbs including allium in winter time around Christmas & New Year's. (The only thing that doesn't really work for me is tulips--not enough chill hours for the regular varieties so I have to grow species tulips.) Late winter planting means I have less trouble with rodents unearthing bulbs and I also can take advantage of the 50-70% off clearance sales.
It is June 8 now and I have some decorative allium that have grown into scapes (?) and they are not changing. They are just staying the same size. The leaves are starting to yellow and die back. Should I wait to see what happens to them or should I cut them back? I don't know what kind they are, unfortunately.
Danielle - I love to watch all of your videos - thank you for sharing your garden wisdom and inspiration! I have tried alliums of different types for the last two years. I finally got one to bloom this year - shubertii - and I love it but don’t understand my lack of success with alliums in general. They sprout but either send up a bit that wild and dies, or just turn yellow and die without sending up bloom stalks - what could I be doing wrong? I am an intermediate gardener and am usually successful with plants and all other bulbs - daffodils, tulips, crocus - bloom fine.
Hi Gail! I'm so sorry to hear that. Are you in a very warm zone? 9 or 10? Any chance the area where they are planted is holding water? Are the bulbs from a bulb supplier?
@@NorthlawnFlowerFarmandGardens I should have said - I am in coastal Massachusetts - 6B, yes all bulbs from popular catalogues, and I have tried them in several areas- do they like it very dry?
I planted Purple Sensation and Sicilian Honey Garlic last fall! Love them both! I'm having trouble with the stems on the honey garlic though. Most grew along the ground before growing vertical. I'm wondering if maybe I didn't plant them deep enough? Do you have any insight? They are so interesting and I love seeing the bees disappear inside them and pop back out. 😍
Hi Cheryl! Many of mine did that also, and I noticed other comments with the same sentiment. I will ask my friend at Longfield and let you know what I find out!

I cannot find any mention of where you are gardening. I am presuming you are American from your accent. Do your planting instructions apply worldwide? Thank you
I have several allium questions: Wondering how to transplant them if they were grown in a pot or somewhere you would like to change? Also Wondering the best way to find out which kind self seed?
Hi Cynthia! I moved some over from our old garden. It should be okay to move them anytime after blooming up until the ground freezes. Or you could let them die back in the pots and then plant the bulbs in their permanent location in the late fall. They are very forgiving. Purple sensation is the main one people mention seeds aggressively. I hope that helps!
Hi Deanna! I read an article by Monty Don on spreading purple sensation by seed. I believe he shook the brown seed heads where he wanted them to establish.
Hi Danielle, have you got any tips on how best to dry them? It’s my first year of growing alliums and the flowers are gone but the heads are still nice to look at. I was just going to leave them till they dry but now I’m wondering if I should cut them and dry them inside. Thanks!
Hi friend! Thank you for this great question! It depends on what you want them to look like dried. If you want them to be purple I would pick just as the color starts to fade. Still purple- but not fresh and full of moisture. You can hang dry or my mom will sometimes dry them by letting them sit in a shallow vase of water and as the water evaporates the heads gradually dry. I like to pick mine green and hang dry. You can pick brown also, but they sometimes shed alot of seed in that stage. I hope that helps!
Alliums are gorgeous but in my last property I had no success (apparently they need a cold spell) so I am currently growing Elephant Garlic as a perennial. A much cheaper option.
Where are people buying their allium bulbs? A fair number of mine seem to grow for a few years and then don't come back. I suspect the bulb rots in the clay soil. Always looking for new suppliers
