You have made the best, most detailed Great Pyrenees grooming videos on RUclips! I feel more confident that I can keep my pup looking nice thanks to your instruction. I am going to try the shop vac for the 'blow out'. Hope it works! My only suggestions would be to hold the phone/camera sideways in order to fill the screen. Thank you so much for taking the time to make and post these. Thanks also to Hodor, who made the perfect model and to your assistant for assisting! :D
This video was a great help to me with my Pyr mix. The mat rake and the round wire brush are my go-to tools. A good brushing once a week, and he's good to go. My guy doesn't have a double coat though.
Best explanation i have seen of using the long bladed rake. As for combs my steel comb is my number one grooming tool. It cost 18.00 but i found a steel comb on chewy that had not only graduated tines but a molded ergonomic composite handle. Thos dramatically reduced my hand fatigue so it was worth the money. Because i have a great pyrenees i invested in a high velocity blower
Thank you so much for showing why they shouldn’t be shaved. I’ve always heard that you shouldn’t shave double coated dogs but I never knew exactly why. I’m trying to tackle grooming my Pyr during this social distancing and this video helps a lot!
I live in Texas and wonder if it’s ok to shave the back side with long guards and underbelly and paws , my pups back side fur has become quite long and he get poo on it more times than not
You said you would answer questions but I don't see how I can do that. I rescued a 2 yr old Gt. Pyrenees livestock guard dog last year and he had been only with sheep all his life, no grooming, lots of stickers, etc. I took him in for grooming (as my other livestock guardians are short haired & natural shedders) as this guy was matted a lot. They shaved him & scissored him to about 1 in. long. Well, as your video stated, now he is so compacted on his shoulders/chest and rear that it is just a mess and I don't know what to do at all. I really need to fix him up so was going to shave him completely down but I really do not want to do that, esp. after what you stated. I need some advise on what you do when you get a severely compacted coat in on a guardian dog. They live out in the bushes, weeds, etc. with the stock so their grooming needs are much different than the average house dog. HELP, please, I'm desperate!!!
I wish more Pyr owners would understand the difference between shaving and removing a blown undercoat. For every correctly groomed Pyr I see I also see 5 that have not had their blown coat raked out and are overheating due to lack of airflow against the skin. I usually tell people it is like you wearing a moisture wicking, SPF 50 shirt over a wool coat in summer.
This video, as well as some of your other ones, have been so helpful! Question, where are you located and do you take appointments? Lol seriously though?
I have a 10 year old Anatolian Shepard/ Great Pyrenees that due to his back hips...I can't take him anywhere for a bath. He sheds TERRIBLE year around. I do use a rake and a undercoat brush- type thing. Is there anything else I can do so he isn't too hot this summer?
This is my second year to have shaved my GP. I didn't want to do it. I tried grooming them myself, but apparently didn't do it correctly and it seemed that I just made it worse. I have all the grooming tools you mentioned, but user error took over! I called in the professionals and was told there was nothing to be done, but shave them...when I protested, they said every once in a while would be fine and the coat would be fine...just not to do it every year. Well, the second summer comes around and had to use a different groomer who also said she could only shave them. Ugh! So...what do I do now. Just start with your process of 4x/year and go from there? Is there anything additional needed to help their coat recover from a shave? No mean replies, please. I love my dogs and only want the best for them. I'm learning here. Thank you. :)
i know someone who has been to 2 groomers now with their GP and the groomer shaved him, took the easy way out i guess. is there anyway to make the coat great again so he wont suffer from the problems you mentioned with shaving, going forward? You would expect groomers know not to shave these dogs but apparently many don't. thanks in advance.

Yes please show how to clean compacted hair. Thank you… please
Thanks for making and sharing this video. It's very helpful for those of us that are new to the long haired double coated breeds.

Ditto, the buzzer I got to buzz my great pyraness dogs hair is clogged, I think I need sheep sheers!

How would you prep for winter? We have a 7 month old who needs a good bath and brush out. However it’s winter here so I want her to stay warm.

Help! A groomer shaved my Pyrenees/BORDER Collie mix. What is the plan to grow back out to normalcy?
Very helpful! Thank you!
What if a dog has been shaved previously? Can their coats be retrained to no longer grow together?
Do you have a preference on velocity blow dryer?
