I've had my VCR for a year and it's been fantastic. The best way to think of it is: it's like a Princeton but you can hit the sweet spot (around 4-5) at home. I run mine with a Weber MiniMass attenuator, which allows me to crank it to 10 at a home volume and it sounds glorious (because at 5 watts you don't need to push the attenuator so hard it kills the tone). With the amp at 10 and my guitar volume dimed, my RW Tele will be on the edge of breakup and my LP with P90s gets that classic late 60s Stones-ish moderate overdrive. Because of the 10" speaker instead of an 8", it's less a Champ than it is a smaller Princeton, with all the tones you'd expect from it.
The Bright switch was actually designed to compensate for the darkening of these early amps when the power amp was cranked, similar to the way that treble boosts worked with old Voxes.
@@luthiervandros Thanks for that clarification. So, in Fenders the bright circuits don't work the same way as the early treble boosts from Dallas, VOX, and EHX.

Mainly i made the output section optionally switchable from the stock 6V6 to an EL84 so you get more mids, brake up and volume. And of course with the stock 6V6 you get the classic tweed tone. Theres a switch on the front panel that allows you to swap the output tube type on the fly for a volume boost if going from the 6V6 to the EL84. I also added a negative feedback loop bypass switch, a bright switch on the treble push pull pot, a mid boost on the bass push pull pot and a low/high input switch on the volume push pull pot (same as the high and low inputs on the original Champs but on a switch, its actually a really useful feature especially since swapping from high to low or low to high is as simple as hitting a switch rather than putting the amp on standby just so you can move the input jack). Its easily one of my favorite amps ive ever played and i have zero doubts ill be regularly using it for the rest of my life. My other main amp is a 100 watt Marshall DSL100HR that i modified also with a choke. So the Champ is a nice option to have when i don't need all that clean headroom. This actually made me order the custom 57 since it didn't look like we were going to get a 8 inch speaker version anytime soon. Thanks for the great review as usual guys!!

But in my opinion (I do have lots of amps including a vintage 1965 twin reverb) this version of a champ is a sleeper!
I have one of the original 1968 Vibrochamps, all original, original tubes and 8” speaker, 2 prong power.
You never changed the tubes? Don’t those wear out over time and use?
@@pjevans854 Yes they do of course wear out. However I never use the amp, as well the old RCA tubes were built to a much higher standard and withstand the tests of time.
These amps sound really sweet...not bad at all!!
When I buy small amps I want them to sound small, which is kinda the point, I guess. I have an Ibanez TSA5TVR, which is also a 5 watt deeley, and it sounds great at relatively low volume. I'm not a public performer, so a nice, quiet, quality tube amp is just what I need. I'll probably be getting a Vibro Champ, fo shizzle. Bedroom player pride! :)
I’m with you but then we wouldn’t get that reverb sound would we ?
@@benallmark9671 I’ve got so many emulator pedals for larger amps. It’s kinda tragic really, lol
@@justjames1138 so that’s all you need is a reverb pedal and your set right ?
@@benallmark9671 Depends on whether you like reverb. I have a mild sprinkling, but nothing Cathedral deep.
That was the best intro jam EVER.
that intro was amazing
Does anyone else just love seeing Pete perfectly in his element like this?
The original vibro champ circuit never changed, until the recent reissues. The black face, drip edge, silverface etc are all exactly the same under the hood.
Fender amps are loud. They seem louder than other amps of the same wattage? I’ve got a Pro Junior, Super Champ Xd and a Greta and they are all freakin loud. I attenuate the Greta through 2/8” 61 alnico speakers are it’s still loud. And I’ve been a drummer for 30+ years. That five watt Vibro Champ sounds tasty.
“Pete always brings the heat” 🔥 Put that on a tee shirt Anderson’s and thank me later! Like send me a free shirt or something once they’re ready. I’ll be waiting! 😂
