One thing I have learned from you and really appreciate is how you’re not afraid to use color. Like in this video, you made different color studies of the same subject. You have inspired me to study what I am painting more closely and look for colors in the subject that aren’t immediately obvious. Thank you for the time it takes to create these beautiful videos and share your process. Happy New Year!
What a lovely start to the year, Sarah! I love seeing your explorations and the variety between the different paintings. You’re so free and unintimidated by colors or conditions, always seeking to understand more and visualize it with sensitivity. (It may not always feel like that to you, but from my POV, you’re a terrific inspiration 😉) Thanks for all the time you invest in sharing with us - please know it doesn’t go to waste 💙🎨✨
It's such a small thing (on top of your wonderful paintings!) but that blue "shadow frame" around your sketches really elevates the page as a whole and give it the mood of a vintage storybook...
its insane how what seems like a few messy strokes suddenly transforms into lively shadows or a serene background. i hope i reach that level at some point, conveying such a clear and colorful idea with such few strokes
Ok. I loved your Plein air version of the tree and thought “how will she improve on it?”… the studio version is so beautiful!! ❤❤❤ Happy New Year and good luck with your goals for the year! I can imagine how difficult it must be to work on growing as an artist yourself when you’re so busy with all you do to help newer artists grow via Patreon/RUclips (and now Craftamo!). I have a few goals for myself this year (art and non-art related) that I need to try to work around my full-time job and it feels very daunting to even think about it. I definitely need more hours in a day or fewer work hours in a week 😂.
Thank you ☺️ that is the trick isn’t it…there’s always going to be something pulling our attention elsewhere. Having the discipline to study is so important if we want to improve. Not just to improve but to create a lifestyle of creativity
Winter plein air is such a challenge, but it can be a real life saver for those of us who get the “blahs” this time of year. Even a cloudy overcast day is better than a day in a well-lit studio. We NEED to be out in nature! Bestest wishes for the new year from Colorado, L :)
So true! I feel like a useless blob when I don’t get a chance to be in nature. We have had a lot of storms lately that kept me inside and I felt gross 😅
@@SarahBurnsStudio We get 300+ days of sun, and I’m still dragging by February. Any artist dealing with Scotland’s brooding conditions is made of sterner stuff, for sure. My hat’s off to ya. 🤠
Yay! Saturday with Sarah! It is a good idea to set an intention. Mine is to learn to paint with gouache with your subscription! Has the first box shipped yet? When will the first lesson take place? I feel like a little kid jumping up and down! 😁😆😆 So helpful to know that even an avid plein air painter like you feels rusty after an hiatus. I love your little studies. 😘
Thank you so much for your inspiration. It is truly magical to watch your painting. I have a totally different approach so I really appreciate how you show us all the different ways you went about that lovely tree. It was also helpful to hear you voice what you were thinking as you did it. Lots of paint tutorials are without that thought process. I will definitely tune in for more I enjoyed it so very much thank you for sharing.
The first boxes are expected to ship towards the end of January. Inside will be a card and on the back there will be a link to the tutorial page :) Can't wait either!
I really appreciate your comments about the dark values and having to make them a little darker than you feel comfortable with. I think that is one of my challenges.
Yay missed your videos and love how you explain that it is not just serene and perfect but cold and uncomfortable too. Makes me feel less of a failure when i wimper when its cold or windy. A great tip with a short session and then back to the warm comfy studio. ❤
As a small business owner myself trying to find that balance between running the business and “being” the business can be a…balance. 😋 What you share is helpful and an inspiration. Thanks for being you. 🙂
I'm still trying to grasp some painting techniques, I find gouaches a very good compromise between watercolours (which I don't like since they could be chaotic for me) and acrylic, thanks for this videos, they're inspiring ❤
I love watching this. Have you ever thought of selling stickers of these smaller paintings and even the studies! I love the idea of stickers, but I'm not into the cartoony, graphic text and cute animals as much. Some little stickers of your work would be amazing. Cheers and happy new year!
Okay, so now I can see where I’m making mistakes, as in using a darker background on say, a tree trunk instead of a lighter one. Also, I noticed you used more paint and less water. Thanks for an amazing video!
Happy New Year Sarah! Thank you for all you do. Since finding your channel a few months ago, I've gone from someone who always worked from reference photos, to doing my own plein air paintings and really learning to "see" what I'm looking at. My art has grown because of you, and I can't thank you enough. ❤
What a beautiful little painting! Always an inspiration and pleasure to watch you create. I'll bet it felt good to do something (pretty much) just for you.
You are such an inspiration! I recently have started painting as a healing exercise and I find your work so lovely. The videos are so educational and full of tips. Thanks so much. I think youll be very successful in the coming years, your work is excellent and I love your journey
My New Year wish is for those chunky brushes that are currently only available to subscription box holders to become available as another set for purchase. (You can make it happen, Sarah, we're counting on you 😄). I've been using our brush set with acrylic inks and they are just perfect. My goals are to make art more consistently across the seasons. It's summer here in Tasmania and living at elevation means that there are so many jobs crammed into this short season, that is even shorter up here. At the moment we are heavily working in the vege garden and fruit orchard, picking and processing produce. It's also the only time I have to do outside maintenance on the house. Just trying to make art the best I can around these jobs and trying to get a bit of summer relaxation and recreation. That's why I love winter, nothing to do except make art.
Wow that's a lot! Good luck with it all... That's an interesting way of seeing things. I may try to trick my brain into "embracing the nothingness of winter"
Can’t wait to get your gouache box this January! But was working with my Himi gouache today, was inspired after watching a video about Eyvind Earle who painted for Disney!
Watching you do this has been so relaxing. I’ve been wanting to learn how to use gouache and also paint landscapes after painting portraits for a while so I cant wait to start receive it your subscription boxes and learning from you ☺️
You have influenced my level and experience I think its neat my cat looks exactly like your one cat 😹 my nanny came from Dundee heehee when I happened upon your RUclips channel I kept coming back jee tried to follow others but you kept teaching me with Flare keep it up❤
What a great looking page of paintings. And what a lovely tree! I like your approach to the goal setting. Its like a mantra. I hope you find the balance you need to do all the things. 💛
Great video. I love the "softness" of watercolor so have not tried gouache, but watching you is giving me the itch to give it a try. As always, thanks for sharing your insights, process and expertise.
Great video. I was surprised at how much green there was. I finally painted my second Gouache painting - 1st with your brushes. I have to say they were wonderful. Soft enough to erase my fears about layering! And the points! Primarily I am a watercolorist so now to give your brushes a try for that. Although this is the year of my gouache journey. All your fault! Thank you! And Happy New year.
Happy New Year!! A very inspiring post. I was also inspired by your use of colour, it's very interesting. Looking forward to seeing more in the coming year. Take care.
Yay!! Happy New Year Sarah! I only recently became a fan of your videos and now love it when you post a new video ❤ I spent a summer working in Scotland when my University had a work abroad program way back many years ago and just fell in love with the country and the people...I only recently started doing watercolor in the last 6 months, so your videos and your storytelling are so captivating to watch , your channel capturing the beautiful scenery of Scotland make me nostalgic to go back someday soon... thanks for sharing your journey , you have so much talent to give and you are very good at capturing the light in your paintings and videography, it really is breathtaking ❤
Hi, it's so fascintating to follow the process, but everytime it feels like You're swinging a wand and there it is, with shadows and highlights. I got the feeling like there is an invisible break where You add the shadows so we can't see how You do. I do know it's not it's just that when You do the shadow leafs I try to see what Your painting and get it when the leaf itself are the on the paper and all of a sudden there is a leaf and it's shadow.... I feels I have to start over everytime I take a break and feels like I won't learn it again and getting closer with anxiety. Not a nice feeling. So, today I tried to paint some fantasy flowers to get the brush strokes. But I feel like a beginner...
Great video, you are a great encourager and artist. I notice your portable painter has the larger pans on both sides. Did I see this wrong? Mine has a side with large mixing area and the other side has smaller mixing areas. Thanks. Don
When you pour it in, close the lids and let it dry slowly for a few days. Then use it properly, for a painting. Then close and let dry again. You could also pour, then compress with your finger, let dry and repeat. But if left open for TOO long they will definitely crack. However even if they crack they don't fall out, and are still totally reusable. Just spray with water a few minutes before use.
Beautiful painting, and so helpful seeing the steps! I know you have a gouache video, but can i ask, what brand and color is that vibrant lavender in left upper corner? Ill go see if I can find your video! Thank you!!
When I am out painting for the first time in a while I am conscious of being in control of what I paint while I consider the rules. After a while I let go and go with the Force. My intuition takes over while my knowledge is silently working in the background. Then, I paint.
I pour the gouache in and let it dry. It's a portable painter and it comes with removable pans. So if I want to change a color I can just switch them out.

That’s wonderful to hear. I love playing with color and there’s a sense of freedom when you just let go and try things
Couldn't have said this better.

What a wonderful phrase! I feel inspired to make one of my intentions for 2024 “Cultivate a lifestyle of creativity”.
I thought the sane thing! Both pieces are lovely!❤
I love the idea of havng words instead of resolutions. Learn would definitely be one of my words as well. :)
Very pretty trees too.

I think more often than not I’m uncomfortable or cold or something when I paint outside 😂 I still love it and learn so much so it’s worth it

Totally understand!

Gouache is a nice 'inbetween' watercolor and acrylics.

Happy New year. Love your process and here is to Learn Simplify and Grounded.
Happy new year!

I found your videos yesterday! I would love to do more paintings outdoors, and your channel looks so calm and inspiring 😍

That's wonderful to hear. And yes we still have a fair bit of green in my area, we are pretty close to the coast and it hasn't been too cold yet
Happy New Year!! A very inspiring post. I was also inspired by your use of colour, it's very interesting. Looking forward to seeing more in the coming year. Take care.
Happy new year!
Ive never tried gouache as plein air, might have to try it 😊😊
You should!
Wow! Beautiful job on the tree! I purchased and love your brushes by the way. Happy New Year from Illinois!

My sister gifted me with some canvases for Christmas. My question is do I need to gesso them first before painting on them with gouache? Thanks!

Again such an amzing outcome! it is always so inspiring ot wtch you paint :) Happy new years to you!
Thank you so much 😀
Great video, you are a great encourager and artist. I notice your portable painter has the larger pans on both sides. Did I see this wrong? Mine has a side with large mixing area and the other side has smaller mixing areas. Thanks. Don
I have a few of them, so I took one of the wings off another one and added it to this one
I would love to come to Scotland for a tutorial with you. Do you ever teach?
Love both studies :-)
Hi Sarah…. Lovely paintings ❤. Question…. How do you stop your gouache from cracking - in the pans? Thank you
When you pour it in, close the lids and let it dry slowly for a few days. Then use it properly, for a painting. Then close and let dry again. You could also pour, then compress with your finger, let dry and repeat.
But if left open for TOO long they will definitely crack. However even if they crack they don't fall out, and are still totally reusable. Just spray with water a few minutes before use.

I can find your video! Thank you!!
It's "lilac" from Shinhan
I was wondering if the toned paper in the sketchbook watercolor paper or multimedia paper?
It's the Stillman & Birn Nova (beige), suitable for wet media
Hi Sarah!!!
Beautiful video! What sketchbook did you use?
Stillman & Birn Nova (beige)
When I am out painting for the first time in a while I am conscious of being in control of what I paint while I consider the rules. After a while I let go and go with the Force. My intuition takes over while my knowledge is silently working in the background. Then, I paint.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Hi Sarah,
Do you make your own gouache pans or do you buy them like that?
I pour the gouache in and let it dry. It's a portable painter and it comes with removable pans. So if I want to change a color I can just switch them out.
Thanks
Usually how long does one set paint take to be empty for you
I usually refill every few months, some colors run out faster
In one of your videos you put something in the gouache to keep it runny (?)... was it gum arabic?
Was it watercolor blending medium?
No, you put it in your gouache.
@@piaroytty I put that in my gouache to make to dry slower
Hi, i still have not received the gouache box I ordered from you a couple months ago When will I receive it?
The box orders were all pre-orders. Craftamo told me the first boxes will ship towards the end of January. Very excited!!
First!
