  • 2+ months in you should be able to understand how much food & moisture your worms want. As your compost worms make natural organic fertilizer & soil amendments for your garden in the form of worm castings you will be rewarded for listening to your worms at this stage!
    In this video we dig through the last feeding, show the steps we took to control moisture & heat & demonstrate how the worms will tell you how much they need to be fed. Finally we give a massive feeding as these red wigglers blasted through our last feeding!
    Epigeic worms or composting worms are fascinating natural composters & fertilizers that are in most homesteaders bag of tricks to make free organic fertilizer & soil amendments as well as fishing bait. If you've ever thought about vermicomposting or composting with worms to make organic fertilizer & natural soil amendments with your plant based kitchen scraps or food waste, this is the channel for you. I have 3 worm composing bins which you can watch from start to finished worm castings on the 3 playlists following each worm bin. How cool does the tomato skin look!!?! What a nice healthy feeding for them, super nutritious! 🥬🥭🍌🥒 it’s definitely growing in size and getting more volume Patrick! Good wormies!! This really is a fun bin and so much bigger than my others! I hope you all are having a fantastic week!! Thanks so much for dropping by to watch & leave a wonderful comment Anita!!🪱🪱🪱

    I’m so glad you shared where you have this bin placed. Since I’m in SE Florida I am concerned about having outdoor bins - heat, critters, etc. I’ve been wishing to see how you deal with that. Now I have a better idea! I’m using my pool screened patio for cow poop sifting, table top composting, plantings, etc. Maybe I can sneak in a worm bin too???!
    Great video as always!

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  Год назад

      Thank you!! I saw your screened in lanai on your worm casting tea making video & thought I might see a worm bin out there!! As long as you have some shade for it, I think you could manage one out there. My fabric pot Outdoor Worm Bin sits flush on the ground in some shade outside of my pool enclosure...I think it stays cooler since it gets more morning sun and the ground helps to moderate the temperature. Thanks so much for stopping by to watch!!🪱🪱🪱

      @@Vermicompost That’s interesting that you think the outdoor bin on the ground is cooler than the outdoor one on the screened lanai. My other thought is to put an outdoor bin nestled into the bamboo I have about 20 feet or so on the east side of the lanai. Hmmm.
      You haven’t had any issue with raccoons or rats eating into the fabric pot bin? That and the heat scare me 😳.

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  Год назад

      As long as it is shaded the bin will be fine (and you don't put a pile of rice in during the summer like I did 2 years ago😂 ruclips.net/video/qVNkFzs0fV8/видео.html ) Ants may be a little bit of an issue nestled into the bamboo but if you open and close it occasionally throughout the week you should be fine. As for raccoons and rats...I did have something tear a small hole through both layers once. it didn't ravage the bin and it never came back. I just turned the inner bag 90 degrees so the holes don't line up and I haven't had a problem for the last two years...I kind of explain my thinking of why I don't get pests or varmints in this video ruclips.net/video/Cmeq-iN_Ih8/видео.html

    Hey there, glad you are enjoying the Vermibag! I started out with the Vermibag Lil’ Mammoth and so glad I did. Anyone that already enjoys their worm farms will love the Vermibag and if you have a family, then the lil mammoth is great! I built the frame to be high enough that there is room underneath for a tub of bedding. I’ve started to put on hooks to store scoops, hand cultivators and a hand broom and dustpan. I put the frame on heavy duty wheels, with two locking, so I can move it about the garage as needed. I have a piece of wood that can rest over the whole thing, while still having room for air circulation, so it gives me a big area to put a few bins of drying castings on.
    I’ve never had any trouble using the bedding under the bin. I think because the fluid that comes down goes into the bedding, it doesn’t really get anaerobic as it would in a fluid only situation, when bacteria can use up all the oxygen in the fluid. Anyways, it’s never been a problem and it’s been a lifesaver for sopping up really wet feedings. I like having bedding ready to go and you’ll notice that material cycles through quicker. You could put half that spent coffee in the bedding too and work it through which helps the bedding stay separated, as I don’t like finding clumps of matted paper that the worms can’t get to. I always do a mix to the bedding bin after feedings, to make sure there isn’t any pooling fluids and us it to help clean off my hands or tools.
    Great job.

      That is a great set up you've made there with your Vermibag Lil' Mammoth!! I probably needed to mix up the bedding I had in the container underneath every so often. As it turns out the shredded cardboard seemed dry on top and when I lifted the container up it had a semi foul odor and there was pooled liquid in the bottom...I'm not sure why it didn't totally soak into all the dry shreddings??!? I'll give it another go and this time mix up the shreddings below into the liquid. Thanks so much for all the tips!! And of course thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

    Top notch advice with "listen to your worm bin"! Pair that with an understanding of how worms and microbes work, and you almost can't go wrong (almost...)! Love your idea of having a bin of bedding at the bottom of the system to catch any runoff that occurs in the UWB. I always keep prepared bedding for my worms that is not only moistened, but also fed (typically coffee grounds, chow, and neem cake), but what you've done there is nearly the same thing with less fuss! Very cool!

    I started an UWB in late Sep 2022 with 2k reds and blue mix from Meme's. I am about full and I have to start taking some castings out! I have about 3 inches left of the tan showing and I am swimming in worms of all sizes. I too am making some massive feedings on about a 6-9 day interval. This is an outdoor bag under the shade of a giant Valley Oak. I just pulled my seed heat mat off last week as our frost danger is pretty much done for the year (Zone 9b). I am also monitoring with that same ThermoPro remote sensor and temps are nice and comfy. Thanks for the great tips, tricks and ideas. Keep 'em coming.

I need to shorten my intervals and keep pumping it full of food scraps as long as it keeps up!! I'm in zone 9b as well, and I'm loving those temperature sensor!! Thanks for the kind words!! That is a great question!! I've only had this bin for a few months but I have some subscribers that have had earlier versions for several years. The one I have (I believe it is the newest version as of Jan 2023) only has one zipper on the top (two zipper heads or whatever the things you pull are called) made of tough thick plastic. I know some earlier versions had a zipper on the bottom that some people complained got jammed with castings and was difficult to zip. My version has velcro high up the bottom sides as well as 4 plastic buckles to hold up the bottom catcher. I actually have just taken this off and I leave a bowl underneath it to catch drippings if I get it too moist up there. The fabric seems extremely durable especially compared to my fabric pot worm bin. The thing I think most people have had trouble with in the past has been the poles that come with the complete model. It looks like you can buy just the bag itself and make your own stand too if you prefer. I purchased some optional stabilizing straps for the poles that seem to be doing well for it...I also have it on a completely level surface. So far I'm very happy with it and my expectation is for it to last a long time!! But I'm only a few months in!! I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for watching my videos & for all your support!!🪱🪱🪱

    Hi, I'm watching your channel for a while and there's a lot of knowledge, thanks so much!
    I started my worm bin with coco coir over a month ago (now it's upgraded to 2-bin-tower made of 11 gallons bins) and I realized that volume has increased significantly and I'm not sure if it's already processed or not. There's not so much feeding left and it looks dark and crumbly (but moist and warm, fermentation probably). I'm have under 1k of red wigglers and I'm feeding them once a week with scraps and a lot of carbon. How to reasonably judge if the castings are ready to harvest? Should I stop the feeding for like, idk, two to four weeks to let them process that? I'm running out of space at this rate.

      Thank you so much for watching!! Sometimes using coco coir bedding can make it hard to know when your worm castings are done, so it may be best to determine if they are done by using time. I would say it will probably take the worms at least 90 to 120 days to break down all the coco coir and food you have given them. If you plan on continuing to add levels to your 2 bin system then I would rotate the trays every 60 days. I think you could probably wait 2 weeks and let them continue to break down the bedding and reduce the volume for you like you said. It may be best to feed a little bit less as well to help keep them focused on the bedding and prevent any fermentation or over feeding situations. It sounds like your bin is doing well!! So keep up the good work but just skip a feeding or two, and add less food and bedding for a while until the worms catch up!! Thanks so much for watching my videos!! I really appreciate your support!!🪱🪱🪱

    Great video. Love the ice d bottle idea. How many worms did you start with?

      Thank you!! I started this Urban Worm Bag with about 2100 worms. My VermiHut worm tower I started with 200. My Tiny Worm Bin started with about 100-50 and my Outdoor Worm Bin starred with 90. I prefer starting with about 2000 but it can be done with much fewer…it just takes way longer!!! If I could have started with 4000 in this Urban Worm Bag I would have. It is an enormous bin! I hope this helps! Thanks so much for watching!🪱🪱🪱 Update/correction I started the VermiHut with 2000 worms not 200!

      @@Vermicompost thanks for the reply. Mine, I only have about 50 so it’s taking a wild but that’s OK.
      I live in southern New Mexico, and it’s sand for soil and no worms as it’s too dry. I am starting to develop this as a good way for my plants I want to grow. Thanks again.

    My worms like to hangout on the sides of the container and have castings everywhere. Is that normal thing for the worms to do? I have vent holes uncovered but they don’t come out of them just hangout on the sides.

      It is totally normal for them to be up against the sides and in the corners underneath the bedding. It is almost as if they like they having something hard to go up against or perhaps they like the moisture that accumulates down there. If you mean is it normal for them to be climbing up the sides and depositing castings along the sides, the answer is yes & no. They will use any moisture available to explore so if condensation gets on the sides they will wander. If they are not escaping then not too much to worry about. But if you want that to stop you can leave any lid you have off the bin and perhaps make some holes lower along the sides if it is a DIY bin. This will help increase airflow and prevent condensation from getting on the sides of the bin. I have a VermiHut worm tower and I don’t mind the worms climbing up the sides so I leave everything how it came with the lid on etc. My Tiny worm bin has larger vent holes that keep the condensation off the sides so I never see the worms climb up the sides even with the lid on. I hope this helps! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

    Great video! Are boiled eggs safe to feed to red wigglers?

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  Год назад

      They are safe to feed your worms but...BIG BUT...they will smell and possibly attract critters...unless you feed so little of the egg that the worms eat it almost right away...or you have so many worms that a whole egg will go fast and you bury the egg deep! Worms will eat just about anything that was once alive (or in this case came from something alive) but some things take a while for the worms to eat...or for it to break down by microbes and other worm bin critters before the worms will eat it. I don't feed my worms boiled eggs but I know folks who do! I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for stopping by to watch and ask a great question!!🪱🪱🪱
