Jack Houweling I also wasn't aware of this. Tried it measuring the blade width on my table saw. Wonder what else us woodworkers could use it for? Like that I can do a screen capture also.
Very helpful when reading small print on coupons, pharmacy labels, paint cans, etc. Didn't know I had this feature on my phone. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
There is a similar feature in Samsung phones too. It is quite hidden and only a widget called "Magnifier". The stabilizer definitely works better though.
marian voicu, don't know your phone/Andy version, and it isn't clear what you're tapping three times... on my Nexus 6P Andy 7.1.2, open camera, pinch the screen to open zoom, then either continue pinching or use slider that appears. And thanks for the tip!
Jere - Just want to say thank you! I am a new subscriber and have throughly enjoyed poking around the great content on your channel. This is a very cool tip and useful feature on the iPhone. I will be using this in the shop, while antiquing and tonight in the ER. Love your channel. Keep up the awesome work.
That is a very handy tip! To add even more accuracy to the measurement of the rings on the pen; measure over several rings and divide by the number of rings. This way minimize the measurement error.
I think Mark wasn't complaining about the fractions but about the "standard system" still being used in the USA. Funnily enough "standard" is not even a system. It is our European smug rant about how metric is so much better and easier to use. Just let us have it, will you?
It was written into US Federal Law in 1893; the customary units were defined in terms of the metric standard units, due to deterioration of the customary unit standards. I understand that the french refused to use metric units through most of the 1800s.
Fuck metric. Standard is easy, sounds better, and is not running with the pack. Standard/Imperial forever. People can use what they want. But acting snobish for metric is stupid.
I like using the three finger double tap to zoom in on anything. Whenever apps/videos won't allow to fill the screen and perfect for landscape recorded video that've been encoded as landscape.
thanks for the tip offs very clever uses of a smart phone app for macro measuring! i didnt know they had one that would do this! i will check my samsung galaxy s5 as this could be an apple only feature
Sad to see so many comments saying "you need to use metric." Clearly they missed the point of the video. While metric does make sense and would be better globally to all be on the same system, absolutely nobody is going to change their entire use of units based on a youtube comment. Most Americans do also know how to use metric, and having 2 tools is always better than one. Clearly Jeremy knows what he's doing and the people trying to tell him otherwise are pathetic.
Thank you! Really I’m quite helpless in the choice of units. I’m not sure if people outside of this country don’t grasp that or what. I prefer metric, but I can’t just switch to using metric when everything the stores sell is imperial. Oh well.
Very useful. I have an android phone. I use the camera to take photos of fine print on products. Then zoom them up to make sure that they are compatible with the application. Some paints and stains do not like certain surfaces or even other coatings
I use a desk mounted magnifying lamp combo. Has a much higher rate then that shitting little hand held thing you had. Its really stable, don't need a can in the way, don't need to worry if the can is going to damage anything, or if the phone is going to fall off the can, I can adjust the magnifying by moving it, the arm allows me to look at thing not laying flat on the desktop, its just way better. This is just a couple things I came up with in a minute. Started using them when I started making my own circuit boards an had to surface mount components.
Now that bifocals are a part of daily living, I find that I frequently do something like this on my Android when I need to read labels that are too small, or need to remember a serial number to type it into my computer. Usually I just snap a photo and enlarge. I'll have to see if my phone also has optical zoom.
You can save the Magnifier photo if you want. Just hold your finger on the photo a few seconds and you get "Save Image" & "Share" buttons. When you touch the "Save Image" button, the picture is saved to your photo stream. I can't figure out WTH happens when you touch the Share button. I just get a blank section of screen?? I use this feature to photo my prescription eye drop bottles which I keep in a separate album on my phone. I can pull up the photo and enlarge it whenever I need to read that tiny print for any reason.
This may be a function of iOS 10.x, this works on my 6S Plus. The past few months I have shared this with many others, always they are amazed; now I do not have to carry one of those wallet magnifiers. Using the iPhone is faster, clearer, and sharper.
I find the iPhone valuable for work. Most of our part serial number labels are printed very small. In some cases the printing is also sloppy which causes the loops to fill in, so it can be hard to tell by eye the difference between say a 6 or 8? By taking a picture I can zoom it up to decipher the number better. Also it prevents having to write it down, and I have ready access later when doing my paperwork.
WOW Great idea, never thought of using it works, but you need a good light source. Used my 4yr old Android, no image stabilization and not quite the magnification, but it works. Works better on my wife's older fancier phone.
I am legally blind and I never knew this existed before you made this. Now I use it everyday and it has totally changed my life. Thank you!!
Excellent tip Thanks. I love it when people use tools in unexpected but useful ways. This thing is right in my pocket every time I walk into the shop.
You never disappoint! Awesome tip! Thanks Jeremy👍
Very nice tip, I just tried it and it works great.
Jack Houweling I also wasn't aware of this. Tried it measuring the blade width on my table saw. Wonder what else us woodworkers could use it for? Like that I can do a screen capture also.
That is a great idea Jeremy. Thanks for sharing.
That's a great little feature. Thanks for taking a moment to share it.
Great feature. Thanks for the info!
Another great idea, Jeremy. Thanks.
Great idea I'll have to use that myself
Thanks for the info. I checked and found my iPad 4 can do the same by following your instructions. You learn something new every day.
Very good tip Jeremy thank you! 👍🏻
What simple but amazing idea.
Very helpful when reading small print on coupons, pharmacy labels, paint cans, etc. Didn't know I had this feature on my phone. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
Excellent tip. Thanks!
Excellent tip thank for sharing Jeremy...
Wow your amazing, thanks, I knew of the feature but never thought of how handy it can be in the shop
That is a great tip! Thanks!
Awesome, thank you for this tip.
There is a similar feature in Samsung phones too. It is quite hidden and only a widget called "Magnifier". The stabilizer definitely works better though.
Super clever! Thanks!
i had no idea that was a feature. Now i can clearly see the splinters to pick them out.
Your video always comes with a brilliant idea. Or more!
Good to see you back

Just tried it, Awesome!
I liked your video and subscribed to your channel, great quality. I'm just starting and learning.
Awesome! Will be using :)
Great little tip. Cheers 🍻
Thanks Jeremy! Cool feature I didn't know of. It will find a lot of use in the near future!
Nice tip. You can do that with an Android phone, too. Same settings, only that you have to open camera in order to tap 3 times to magnify.
marian voicu Thank you for this tip!

I had used the function once before and completely forgotten about it. Thanks for the reminder.
those imperial units give me headaches

Ipones and inches... he pretty much painted himself into a corner from the very start.
In fact the USA have the metric system since 1975. But they are too yesterday in some kind...

Hi jerry. Really cool tip. I'm a luthier and I can't wait to use this
I love watching your videos... i can't say that i have ever watched one and didn't learn something, or find a new application of the information.
At 76 yrs I am today years old and just finding this out. THANK YOU ... AND ... HORAYY.....

I did not know that feature. Thanks
That is a fantastic feature.

Looks like I have yet another cool thing to show my dad!
genius - I love your videos and I will be using this technique from now on :)
Thank you for your approach to the lead out of the video. I'll figure it out in just go do that.
Wow.
Revolutionary
I like using the three finger double tap to zoom in on anything. Whenever apps/videos won't allow to fill the screen and perfect for landscape recorded video that've been encoded as landscape.
Great tip! I just added it to my iPhone.
Very clever!
I have trouble seeing splinters in my hands. This will work great. Thanks
great Idea !
Dude, that's fucking awesome!
thanks for the tip offs very clever uses of a smart phone app for macro measuring! i didnt know they had one that would do this!
i will check my samsung galaxy s5 as this could be an apple only feature
Turning in to one of my favorite channels. 😀👍
Thanks! I did not know about that feature; in some cases, I've used the camera to magnify small objects, but this is much better.
that's awesome.
cool idea
"… a machinist or a woodworker or a ... human" 🤣
Terrific idea, Jer!
You got a like just for your brilliant last words on this video. Refreshing!
Thanks!
Wasn't aware of this feature. Tried it and works great. Thanks! I Like that I can do a screen capture also.
Awesome tip! I use magnifier a lot so just another great purpose thank you
Can you jury-rig an optical comparator out of this? Maybe a paper template overlaid on the screen?
Nice idea.
Just checked your channel for a new vid, didnt see one. Refresh youtube and see you just uploaded. Amazing how that worked out.
Masen Gambell you should check more often!
I gave it a thumbs up because it forced me to look again at the accessibility features on my phone and I learned something.

Wow thanks, had no idea my Iphone could do that - Great stuff
"If you've ever seen a RUclips Video you'll know what to do so just do it" is about the best outro u can get

You would be blown away if you knew how close you can put a $3 usb camera.
< 2cm
Well that's an interesting feature. In low light, with the flash enabled, it is impressive how clear the object is.
Not facebook, twitter and Co.
We need more of these kind of things.
Pretty cool feature didn't know it existed. Slightly different for iPhone 11 but definitely worth enabling.
Now that bifocals are a part of daily living, I find that I frequently do something like this on my Android when I need to read labels that are too small, or need to remember a serial number to type it into my computer. smart use
Thanks for sharing this! I didn't even know that a magnifier exists in my iPhone. It also works with iPhone 5.
Will it give metric measurements also? Thank you for the video!
Cool feature. thanks. (now if I can only remember how to access it.)
+Rick S
Once it's turned on in settings, you just have to triple-click the home button whenever you need it. Fairly easy to remember :)
Great!!!!
Great pointer. Keep rambling!

Siri: Enable potato vision! :-) such a neat trick, thanks Jeremy.
Thanks just the job

Was that Jim Bob from the Waltons? Just kidding. Great video!

Very cool, it's like having an electronic microscope.
